Hi Mike ...

This is the only instance of a Thomas HUTT marrying a Mary on the OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837):

22 JUL 1805 - Thomas HUTT to Mary JARVIS at Great Milton

The date looks very feasible, and Holton and Great Milton are adjacent parishes (although only with a minimal common boundary).

Definitely worth further investigation, I think.

Thomas and Ann were married at St Peters Broughton Poggs 1 Jan 1783.

Searching for information about John Tomlin and his forbears from Hinton Waldrist Oxfordshire England. I believe he was born in Sep 1779. His spouse was Mary, maiden name unknown, born about 1782. They had a son, John Tomlin, born in 1819 (I have a date 11 Jun but do not know if that was a date of birth or a baptism).

I know it is not much to go on but perhaps some kind soul can help me.

I can't locate his parents or any brothers and sisters. Can anyone help please?

Thomas HUTT was baptised at Kingsey, Bucks on 20/1/1782, parents Thomas and Elizabeth. I have lost track of him since then and so I am looking for any marriage and also his death and burial. Can anyone give me the parish details of any marriage, wife and children also any deaths and burials. He may have moved to Holton, Oxon and so I am posting on this message board as well. I think he might have been with his wife Mary at Holton in 1841 and a widower at Warren Farm aged 67 in 1851.

John HUTT and his wife Elizabeth were living at Minchery Farm, Sandford, Oxon in 1851 both aged 66 years. Elizabeth died before 1861 when John was still in Sandford and John has disappeared, presumed dead, by 1871. Can anyone give me the parish details of the deaths and burial of both Elizabeth and John, probably in Sandford.

the details you give are very helpful and tie in with my research. i am the g-g-g grandson of the Robert WELCH who married Jane Smith. The marriage certifcate records jane as Jane STANLEY, a widow, daughter of John Smith, a labourer. In the 1901 census she is living as a mother-in-law with James SCARSBRROK'S family.
You may be interested to know that the son of Robert WELCH and Jane, also Robert, moved to Manchester,sometime between and 1874 when he married an Irish wouman, Mary BIRMINGHAM. many of he family have lived in the north Manchester area since with a few scattered around various parts of the world. My grandfather remembered being taken to Kirtlington to visit relatives. If you would like to see the gedcom please drop me an email.

Paul a long time, but still interested in exchanging info for the Jennings, Wheatley /Cuddesdon area.
Harold David jennings was the son of David Jennns born Cuddeson 1854, who in urn was the son of david Jennings born 1817. I believe his parents were Robert Jennings 1779 - 1848 and Faith Hinton 1787 - 1826? .
If we are searching the same lineage then I have teh jennings family right up to the present day. More than willing to send you my notes via private email. Mine is dunmar@sympatico.ca. I am stuck with the Robert Jennings born 1779. Living in Canada i find it impossible to access the Oxfordshire PArish records.

Hello Sally, I hope this message gets to you as it is a long time since you posted it.

I am a descended from the jennings family in the Wheatly/Cuddesdon area. I have a David jennings born 1817 in my family tree but no Harold. My records show that there was a double relationship in the previous generation but David Jennings married Ann and had 5 girls & 2 boys.

I live in the Oxford area and have access to the parish records. I also have an extensive list of Jennnings from this area and would be interested in comparing notes.

The 1985 GRO death registration said Wycombe, Bucks/Oxford so I thought it best to try both Message Boards, just to be on the safe side. It turns out it is High Wycombe in Bucks where the death occurred. Thank you for your help.

The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 23 November 2009 at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall, exchange journals and the library.

The subject of the talk is "The resources of the British Library Newspaper Library" which will be presented by Stewart Gillies.

Our speaker tells me that his talk will be on the British Library Newspapers Collection and will provide a brief overview of the history and development of the British newspaper, a description of the newspaper collection and newspaper reading room services and some information on the future of the newspaper collection. As newspapers are a fantastic resource for family history, this should be a presentation not to be missed.

Our speaker Stewart Gillies is currently employed as "Information Services Manager", British Library Newspapers. He has been in the post since 2002. Stewart has worked with the British Library since 1993 including periods in the Humanities and Rare Books Reading rooms at the main British Library site at St Pancras. Prior to working for the BL, he worked in Local Studies and Archives departments of local authorities in both Scotland and London and began his professional library career as a Local History Librarian. Stewart is Scottish and was born and raised in Glasgow, but has lived in London for over twenty years.

A family tree on the Ancestry website would seem to indicate that he emigrated to New York in 1886 - which may be why you can find no further record of him in the UK!

The OFHS has a large collection of MIs (available on both CD-rom and fiche), but unfortunately I can't see a Wycombe in Oxfordshire!

There's a Wycombe near Melton Mowbray (Leics.) and, of course, High Wycombe in Bucks.

My grandfathers brother Levi Edwards was born 1865 or 6 in Ducklington. He appears on the 1871 census and the 1881 census working as a servant at Stanton Harcourt. Then I have no information. He doesnt not appear on any census therafter or any marriage or death indices. Is there anyone who can help me?
Levi was the son of William and Emma (nee Gould) EDWARDS. His siblings were Walter (1858), Edwin (1859) , Dorcas (1861) , Alice (1864) , Matthew (1869) , Frederick (1872) ,Elizabeth (1875) , Ernest (1878).

Susan Banbury was the sister of David Henry Banbury - my ggrandfather. Other siblings are James, William H. and Elizabeth. They all came to the US on the same ship in 1880 although they are listed in 2 separate places on the passenger list. Their parents are James Banbury and Eliza Banbury (same last name because they are cousins). I have some newspaper articles of some of the family after they moved to Illinois. I'd be glad to swap information.

Florence CHURCHILL and William LEWRY married in Steyning (Sussex) RD in 1903. You can look them up on the FreeBMD website (www.freebmd.org.uk) and this will give you the reference number (year, quarter, registration district, volume and page) which will enable you to purchase their marriage certificate from www.gro.gov.uk. The marriage certificate will show the name and occupation of Florence's father, which will help you to find her birth.

Interestingly, FreeBMD has another LEWRY/CHURCHILL marriage:

William Ernest LEWRY and Clara Eliza CHURCHILL were married in Fulham (London) RD in 1905. They are on the 1911 census, living in St. Pancras (London), with their children Ernest William (4) and Clara Winifred (2).

Just coincidence, or is there a connection to your family?

I've tried looking for Florence on various censuses before her marriage, but there are too many, so her father's name is definitely needed.

Hi Phil - I would appreciate you giving me any information on the Dumbleton family you can - I know of a branch that was in Burford, but the parents originated from Banbury then settled in Lew/Bampton, so Witney is the registration district. I know there are thousands of them in Piddington and Middleton Cheney, but these Dumbletons are a bit trickier to track!

Hi bill, I have just found a marriage for Edward West to Hannah Lockett in Fairford Gloucestershire which is only 2 miles from Quennington where the west family I told you about last night lived. They had 1 son in Fairford William bap 1 May 1800 then no other records. Nothing in Quennington prior to 1801 so a good call,I think, it is the same family.
Unfortunately I can’t find Edward’s or Hannah’s birth.

Unfortunately the Nuffield PR transcription published by OFHS stops at 1853. Looking at the 1881 census, his father is shown as John aged 57 born Swyncombe - mother Ann aged 60 b Goring. There are a number of other siblings listed.

You can view this census on a number of sites free of charge.

Hi Bill, I have been having a look around and think I may have found Jane’s parents.
Looking at the 1880 American census on http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp I found a Jane Bunce living in Baltimore aged 70 giving her birth in England in 1810.
I looked at the Shilton parish records again for the marriage of Edward & Jane to find any witnesses.Edward and Jane marked as both living in the parish of Shilton at the time of the marriage. Witneses were Charles Bunce and Martha West.I did a further search on Familysearch for a baptism of Jane West for that date and came up with a Jane West baptised 10 June 1810 in a village called Quenington in Gloucestershire. This village is only 8 miles from Shilton so looked very promising. A further search gave me a list of West baptisms in Quenington including a Martha West. There are a few more which are listed below.

My great grandfather George Morris states on the 1911 census that he was born in Nuffield, Oxon.

I am having a problem finding a birth for him.

Can anyone tell me which registration district Nuffield came under in 1858/63?

Oxfordshire FHS visits "foreign parts" on Saturday 31 October 2009, when the annual Open Day of the West Surrey FHS takes place at Woking Leisure Centre. Traditionally, this is one of the larger society Open Days that we attend, with a substantial number of stalls in attendance.

I'm delighted to report that the Oxfordshire FHS stall will be selling our CDs and some items from our bookstall. In addition, we will have our "Search Services" available on computer, featuring an array of Oxfordshire and North Berkshire indexes to censuses, baptism registers, marriage registers, burial registers and monumental inscriptions.

Phil,

This is really great! Edward Bunce and Jane West are my GGGreat Grandparents. Edward, his brothers Robert and Richard, and their wives emigrated as a group to Baltimore, Maryland, USA in in 1831. Many years after I was born in Baltimore. This is the conclusive proof I needed that I have the correct Bunce line. Many thanks!

By the way, Edward and Jane's grandson, my great-grandfather, was named David West Bunce. His middle name honored his grandmother's maiden name.

I have also looked for West in the records but only one mention in 1830. It is included above as it was a marriage to a Bunce.
