Their daughter, Florence Vella Reece nee Wolfe, was my maternal grandmother. I have some more info on Susan etal from Hinsdale, Illinois and environs, if you are interested.
Susan Banbury was the sister of David Henry Banbury - my ggrandfather. Other siblings are James, William H. and Elizabeth. They all came to the US on the same ship in 1880 although they are listed in 2 separate places on the passenger list. Their parents are James Banbury and Eliza Banbury (same last name because they are cousins). I have some newspaper articles of some of the family after they moved to Illinois. I'd be glad to swap information.

Welcome to the messageboard!

Florence CHURCHILL and William LEWRY married in Steyning (Sussex) RD in 1903. You can look them up on the FreeBMD website (www.freebmd.org.uk) and this will give you the reference number (year, quarter, registration district, volume and page) which will enable you to purchase their marriage certificate from www.gro.gov.uk. The marriage certificate will show the name and occupation of Florence's father, which will help you to find her birth.

Interestingly, FreeBMD has another LEWRY/CHURCHILL marriage:

William Ernest LEWRY and Clara Eliza CHURCHILL were married in Fulham (London) RD in 1905. They are on the 1911 census, living in St. Pancras (London), with their children Ernest William (4) and Clara Winifred (2).

Just coincidence, or is there a connection to your family?

I've tried looking for Florence on various censuses before her marriage, but there are too many, so her father's name is definitely needed.

Penny

Hi Phil - I would appreciate you giving me any information on the Dumbleton family you can - I know of a branch that was in Burford, but the parents originated from Banbury then settled in Lew/Bampton, so Witney is the registration district. I know there are thousands of them in Piddington and Middleton Cheney, but these Dumbletons are a bit trickier to track!

No hurry - anything would be appreciated!
Hi bill, I have just found a marriage for Edward West to Hannah Lockett in Fairford Gloucestershire which is only 2 miles from Quennington where the west family I told you about last night lived. They had 1 son in Fairford William bap 1 May 1800 then no other records. Nothing in Quennington prior to 1801 so a good call,I think, it is the same family.
Unfortunately I can’t find Edward’s or Hannah’s birth.

Regards

Phil.
Re: Belcher's in Combe

Hello. I have the PRs for St.Lawence's church,Combe which contain these entries for Belcher(Beecher). The only Belchers baptised there in the early to mid-1700s were the children of William Belcher and Martha. The only Belcher Marriage recorded there was on 19.2.1809 when Anne "Belcher or Beecher" married William Austen. The 'Beecher' seems to have arisen from poor handwriting!
BAPTISMS. 27.6.1731 William (buried there on 5.10.1731)
7.1.1732 John (the BTs for 1733 and 1734 are missing)
31.8.1735 William 29.1.1737 Mary 5.10.1740 Ann.
BURIALS. 9.8.1746 William - a day labourer.
13.9.1747 Catherine a widow. 6.12.1776 Martha. 11.12.1776 William. 11.12.1776 Sarah and 16.12.1776 Rose.
December 1776 was a bad month for Belchers. I wonder why.
William & Martha's marriage is not recorded in the Combe PRs. I shall look in Woodstock.
The LDS/IGI has a William Belcher marrying a Mary Baughan at Lower Heyford in 1767. However I don't have the Heyford PRs. If I can help further, please ask.

Oxfordshire FHS in Woking this Saturday 31 October 2009

Hi listers and colleagues

Oxfordshire FHS visits "foreign parts" on Saturday 31 October 2009, when the annual Open Day of the West Surrey FHS takes place at Woking Leisure Centre. Traditionally, this is one of the larger society Open Days that we attend, with a substantial number of stalls in attendance.

I'm delighted to report that the Oxfordshire FHS stall will be selling our CDs and some items from our bookstall. In addition, we will have our "Search Services" available on computer, featuring an array of Oxfordshire and North Berkshire indexes to censuses, baptism registers, marriage registers, burial registers and monumental inscriptions.

Those researchers wishing to plan their visit to our stall in advance can view our resources on the following webpages :-

CD sales ; http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html

bookstall ; http://www.ofhs.org.uk/books.html

Search Services ; http://searches.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/

The Open Day of the West Surrey FHS takes place on Saturday 31 October 2009 at Woking Leisure Centre. The doors open at 10.00am. Further details about the event itself, its location and other stallholders can be obtained from :-

http://www.wsfhs.org/Openday.htm

That URL even links to a plan of the hall, so why not organise your day now ?

Best wishes.

Paul Gaskell
Publicity Officer
Oxfordshire Family History Society
Web : www.ofhs.org.uk

Oxfordshire FHS meeting - "The Great Western Railway Shareholders' Index"

All

The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 26 October 2009 at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall, exchange journals and the library.

The subject of the talk is "Great Western Railway Shareholders' Index", which will be presented by Frank Hardy.

Our speaker tells me that his talk will look at how the Society of Genealogists (SoG) came to have possession of these volumes, and precisely what they are. He will then describe what the SoG has done with them - the indexing of 270 volumes of 150 folios each. Finally, Frank will describe how the index - which is huge - will be made available to the world at large.

Our speaker Frank Hardy has been researching his own family history for over thirty years, and has been a member of the SoG for some twenty-eight years. Frank has been a member of various SoG committees since 1990, and is one of the team of members who do advice work within the SoG's Library. Professionally, he is a retired railway civil engineer, with a career spanning almost fifty years.

All members, potential members and their guests are welcome.

For directions as to how to get to the Exeter Hall, please see :-

http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html

For a list of future OFHS meetings, please see :-

http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html

Any queries, please contact me off-list.

Paul Gaskell
Publicity Officer
Oxfordshire Family History Society
www.ofhs.org.uk

Helen,

The BELCHER line in Lower Heyford starts with John BELCHER in 1768. It is the earliest record in this parish.

So, no William BELCHER.

I had a little look around the Bicester area and there doesn't seem to be any William's baptised c1738.

One slight possibility is a William in COOMBE baptised to William/Martha in 1735 but I hesitate to say this is him.

Lyn.

I just read your post on Ancestry. It was posted in 2001 so I don't know if you are still active. I am seeking more information on Samuel Lockhart SUMNER who married Sarah TYLER. I believe their daughter was Sally "Sarah" Sumner (about 1783-1831) and their son was Benjamin SUMNER - dates unknown. I am trying to link Sally SUMNER with my 2nd G Grandfather, Henry HART (1795-1879) of New Hampshire, Canada and Michigan.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and I will happily share the information I have.
Thank you,
Diane Gould Hall

It is included above as it was a marriage to a Bunce.
I will look at Burford in the next few days and get back to you but a quick look I see about the same number as Shilton
Regards
Phil.

Hi Bill, I have been having a look around and think I may have found Jane’s parents.
Looking at the 1880 American census on http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp I found a Jane Bunce living in Baltimore aged 70 giving her birth in England in 1810.
I looked at the Shilton parish records again for the marriage of Edward & Jane to find any witnesses.Edward and Jane marked as both living in the parish of Shilton at the time of the marriage. Witneses were Charles Bunce and Martha West.I did a further search on Familysearch for a baptism of Jane West for that date and came up with a Jane West baptised 10 June 1810 in a village called Quenington in Gloucestershire. This village is only 8 miles from Shilton so looked very promising. A further search gave me a list of West baptisms in Quenington including a Martha West. There are a few more which are listed below.
Thomas bap 27 Dec 1801
Anne baptised 28 Feb 1803
David bap 1805
Martha bap 8 Feb 1807
Jane bap 10 June 1810
Elizabeth bap 12 Apr 1812
John bap 9 Apr 1815
Parents of above Edward & Hannah West.

With the names of Jane and Martha linked here and in Shilton I am pretty sure that this is the same family.
Tried to find Edward & Hannah’s marriage but no luck yet.

I hope this is of help to you.
Regards
Phil.
I lived at 29 Woodgreen from 1950 to 1968. No. 29 is to the left of The Three Pigeons pub, looking from Woodgreen itself. No. 27 is to the left of no. 29 in the direction of Narrow Hill and West End. When I lived there, if I remember correctly a Miss Bartlett lived in no. 27.

I don't live in the area anymore but the houses were still all there a couple of years ago and well looked after.

Phil,

Were there any details on the Shilton marriage record for Edward Bunce and Jane West?
Phil,

This is really great! Edward Bunce and Jane West are my GGGreat Grandparents. Edward, his brothers Robert and Richard, and their wives emigrated as a group to Baltimore, Maryland, USA in in 1831. Many years after I was born in Baltimore. This is the conclusive proof I needed that I have the correct Bunce line. Many thanks!

By the way, Edward and Jane's grandson, my great-grandfather, was named David West Bunce.
Joseph Horton was born at Kingsey, Bucks on 4/5/1828, parents William and Hannah. He joined the Army and appears again in 1871 as a museum porter living at Holywell, Oxford with a wife Mary Ann, born in Corfu. Can anyone give me the details of the marriage. Joseph died in the June quarter 1884 in Oxford District and Mary Ann died in the June quarter 1907 in the Thame District of Oxford. Can anyone give me the parish details of the deaths and burials.
Best wishes,
Mike Horton

Sarah,

Unfortunately the Nuffield PR transcription published by OFHS stops at 1853. Looking at the 1881 census, his father is shown as John aged 57 born Swyncombe - mother Ann aged 60 b Goring. There are a number of other siblings listed.

You can view this census on a number of sites free of charge.

Regards
Harry

Hi,

Thanks for that info, funny thing though, considering that the Magistrate wished to prevent them from influencing each others behaviour, is that they were both transported on the same ship and ended up together in Tasmania, (Port Arthur). They both received their Ticket of Leave in 1846.

Chris
