My mother was born at Bury-on-the-Hill on March 19, 1922. Her parents were Charles Faulks and Ada Neal.

Charles was born in Greetham on April 10, 1890. Charles had two brothers Harry and Walter and two sisters Fanny and Annie.

Ada was born in Manton on May 21, 1891. Ada had five sisters Susan, Edith, Patricia, Elsie and Lillian.

Charles' parents were Richard Faulks and Mary Brown.

Adas' parents were Horace Neal and Ann(a) Brown.

Anna died at age 50. Her father was a musician and was known as Fiddler Brown.

My grandfather Charles and my great-grandfather Richard were both carpenters at Burly-on-the-Hill and worked for the Squire Finch.

This all the information I have of my mothers' side of the family. Any information would be appreciated.

I was really thrilled to find your message about Fiddler Brown as I have been trying to trace his decendents for my own family history. I thought you might be interested in what I know about the family too.

I have a Brown connection with Burley on the Hill

William Brown married Mary Glenford in Burley 1776
They had 8 children that I am aware of
Henry was a son and so was Francis (my direct line)
Another son John married Susanna Royce and it was their son Willam Royce Brown born 1828 who was Fiddler Brown

I understand from another message from you that you have access to a photograph of fiddler brown If you could possibly let me have a scan of the picture you mention I would be thrilled I did know of its existance as my grandmother (born Greetham 1905) who died a few years back said there was a picture of him with his fiddle and she actually knew him as a little girl.

When I first started looking into the family hisory she gave me a cutting from the paper reporting the funeral of William (Fiddler Brown) There seems to have been 2,000 at the funeral.The paper cutting is very old but I could try and scan it for you.I have transcribed it so I could send a copy of that too.

He was apparently married twice so if you have any further information about your great grandmothers Brown
family I would love to know about it. From looking at the dates Ann may have been a daughter from his first marriage.

I am related to William Royce Brown. One of his sons was Arthur Brown, who had a daughter Mary Elizabeth Brown who had a son Martin (my dad). I have some other information on sons and daughters of W R Brown. Is Fiddler Brown definitely W R Brown, I haven't any proof, the newspaper cutting, is that in Stamford Mercury, are there any details, I believe he was in the Crimea, but haven't been able to find any records here. If you have any further information that would be great. If you need any info from me let me know.

I too have a Brown - Neal marriage, but little other information... Any idea whether this ties in with your information?

My maternal great grandmother was Elizabeth Ann Neal and her husband was William Brown, both listed as born in Rutland on the 1901 census. By then they were living in London. Their oldest child was born 1894, so marriage poss. 1892 or so. They had a bunch of daughters, all called after plants! ( Holly, Ivy, Violet etc.) Holly was my grandmother.

I believe your William Brown was the son of William Royce Brown born in Oakham, Rutland in 1828, also called Fiddler Brown (he was in the Crimean war and we have his 2 medals). My relative was Arthur brown, son of William Royce Brown and brother to your William. Arthur is my great grandad.

William Royce Brown parents were John and Susanna. John comes from Burley-on-the Hill, just outside Oakham and I believe his parents were William Brown and Mary Glenford.

I don't think that is the link, as I have this week located William as the son of Violet Brown living at John Street in Oakham in the 1881 and 1871 census. The dates and locations match, and the fact that his mother's name was Violet, which was later one of hiis daughter's names would seem to tally.

I'm not sure looking at the 1901 census on Ancestry the William Brown who has the mum Violet is living in Nottingham, whereas the other William Brown is living in Battersea, London in 1901 (your William Brown?), so I think your William cann't be the son of Violet.

On 1891 the William son of Violet is also in Nottingham.

On 1891 census in Oakham there is a William Brown married to Elizabeth A. (on the transcribe on ancestry they have the wrong age for him but if you look at image is 24 in 1891.

1901 - Wiiliam Brown and Elizabeth in Battersea - definitely my family

1891 - William and Elizabeth together in Oakham, no children yet - tallies dates and birthplaces, and his ocupation as railway platelayer tallies with family stories of him movign to London buildign the railway.

1881 William 17 yrs living with mum Violet and Grandfather Samuel Brown in John St Oakham ( My William named a daughter Violet and the address in Jihn St is in teh same census disrtict and the 1891 Oakham address

1871. William age 7 with Mum Violet, Grandfather Samuel and Grandmother Sarah at same address in Oakham.

Also, in 1841, Samuel was living with Sarah Piser ( Pizer) and married her later. It looks as if Violet was actually her child by a previous marriage but I am stuck a bit there at the moment.

All these Williams and Violet were born in Oakham
