BURGESS of Highley

I am trying to find descendants of George William Burgess (born 1876) and his wife Eliza (nee Vickerage) born 1878,
they married in 1898, they had a daughter Bertha in 1901, I have been unable to find any information after that. I have heard of a Mrs Burgess (maybe Hilda) returning to Highley with her children from Stourport and not being allowed back into the family home, she then drowned herself and the children in the river. I am not sure if there is any connection with the two families, but I would like to find out.
Thanks in advance
Steve

hi steve
My mother was Minnie Vickerage and she used to talk to me about the family. The name Burgess came up.
They had a daughter,Bertha Ellen born saturday 12 january 1901 at Greenhalls Highley and a son Jim Burgess. No details.
I do know that Jim moved to Rotherham with my Grandad Eli Vickerage's brother Jesse and Tommy Weaver in the late 1890's.
My mother said that Jim was the [Eldest] son of Lizzie and [JOE]Lizzie WAS 18 and Joe burgess. Where the Joe came from I do not know-he was .
Among some of of my scribbled notes I have Frances/HILDA Burgess 17 Spencer st sutton common kidderminster.Icannot say whether she was a relation but there is the address.
It is possible from this note of 20 years ago that she was connected to Jessie baptised 12 Aug 1894 son of Bertha ellen Vickerage but with the name Burgess attached.Confused?- well I am.

Hi Eunice,
Thanks for getting in touch. I have recently bought the MI micro fiche of Highly Church, so I am trying to trace the Burgess's that are buried there. I have a few people asking around for me, mainly the Holford side of the family. My Great Grandfather Samuel Winwood was 1st cousin to your Grandfather Eli Vickerage. I did not have any idea of siblings for Bertha Ellen. I have been in touch with Geraldine Wilkes and with Clare, I have not been in touch with Paul for many years. my e-mail address is sroberts@dircon.co.uk
I will try and sort out what info I have on the Burgess side and send you another message.
Best Wishes
Steve

I note your request was some time ago, George Burgess was my grandmother Edith's brother. I do not have a lot of info, but have found 10 children to George and Susan (Piper) Burgess. The last seven were born in Highley. There does not appear to be a Hilda in the immediate family, have you placed her yet?

My family is from Highley and many of my father's siblings are buried in Highley church. My fathers name was George, as was his fathers, and they lived in the miners cottages in New England before moving to Clee View.

It does sound like 'our' family. Was George (b. c1877) and Eliza your grand / parents?

Marg,
I mistakenly said my Grandfathers name was George. It was John Thomas Burgess. They lived in the New England miners Cottages until about 1917 at which time they moved to Clee View in Highley.
They were a large family. My father was born in 1905 and was the oldest son. Could your Grandfather have been a brother of my Grandfather?
John

This is a picture of my Grandfather and Grandmother taken I would guess about 1910. My father George is front left, and his brother William is next to him. You will note my grandmother is pregnant.
