Odd one: how many generations/people since 1650?

Hello there

Here's a strange question that a friend asked me, and to which I really couldn't guess at an answer!

I live in a house in rural west Suffolk that was built in the mid 1600s. It's an old farmhouse, and has 3 bedrooms upstairs. I think it's the original farmhouse for our hamlet, or certainly one of the first few around the green.

His question: How many people and/or generations do you reckon have lived in it since it was built? (He means how many have died here, and he was trying to scare me...)

I know it's impossible to say - but if we assume it has had 'average' families with 'average' numbers of offspring and extended family living with them - what sort of numbers would you stab at? What were living conditions like years ago? Lots of additional people around, or just close family like is the case these days?

Anyway, thanks for humouring me!
