Thank you, that does look like them.
You are most likely correct about the Exenham, I wondered why I could not find it on the map (or my trusty AA book)
I'm new to these counties and wasn't aware that the border had shifted. thanks
Glenda

This is probably your family in 1861. Address, 9 Chapel Street, Exning. I think you probably meant Exning as there is not an Exenham to my knowledge. You need also to be aware that Newmarket has moved between Suffolk & Cambridgeshire over the years, so always search both. Newmarket is the famous horse racing town.

James Clarey, 32, Ag.Lab. b. Exning
Sarah Clarey, 32, Wife, b. Freckenham, Suffolk
Harriet Clarey, 8, Daur.
Hi, hope this hasn't repeated itself, but I seem to have 'lost' the first request I just typed.
Just started my Cleary line and an entry in the Mt Morgan, Qld Aust, cem. notes born Exenham, Newmarket, England.
I was wondering if it might be the Newmarket in Suffolk?
George Cleary b abt 1853 to Names and Sarah (Fuller).
I wonder if someone may be able to check the '61 and '71 to try to locate the above family?
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give.
Glenda

I have on my tree Lucy Ann Johnson who was baptised 1820 Iken. On the same day her sisters Charlotte Johnson and Maria Johnson were also baptised there. They also had a brother George baptised Iken 1823. Their parents were William Johnson and Lucy. William was a bailiff. Does this ring any bells to anyone....can anyone help me find out about their parents William and Lucy? I cannot find their marriage. None of the children are with either parent on 1841 census so I have no other information on them, thank you

This jumps back a bit!!.. Thomas Purdy married Elizabeth Sharp in 1617 at Bury St. Edmunds. St. Mary parish register marriages. Her parents may be Roger Sharpe and Grace Wright who married in 1599. You may have a lot of ancestry there. The tricky bit is the parish registers during the Civil War in the early 1640's; the parish registers were not maintained well at all and become very difficult to read. They have been microfilmed and transcribed; I've viewed them in Bury, but haven't checked availability on this side of the pond.

Edward TAYLOR

I am hoping to expand my search for Edward Taylor and his significant other Maria (no surname0
They are parents of HENRY TAYLOR baptised Brandeston 26 May 1826.
Edward and Maria did not apparently attend this baptism as Henry was baptised with some other children possibly cousins.
Edward was born Brandeston in 1798 to James and Elizabeth TAYLOR.
Based on some parish records (Oct 1815) it is possible that Edward as a boy went to live with a John or Joseph JEFFERSON at Earl Soham Apart from this there is a single detail that Edward was a soldier. Both he and Maria disapear from here no marriage records in Suffolk and no apparent records of deaths.
Edward is my 3x Gt Grandfather.
I would appreciate any information or suggestions that people care to offer which would help my track this couple down
Regards
John Taylor

Dear Nancy, Thankyou so much for the help, oh what a clever lady you must be. I'm still mastering the computer! I may very well take you up on your offer of help after I get myself sorted out with all that you have sent me. A week or so ago whilst struggling with Elleanor Rivett I chanced on a Family Tree (not much on it ) from someone in Alberta Canada recognised the name she is part of my Mothers family, haven't had the chance to determine which part but have had an e-mail today she was looking for Henry Nattrass or at least more about him. I know that they have a lot of photos over there that I was promised copies of years ago so perhaps I will get them now. I found Mathias several times with Nattrass and couldn't quite make up my mind if it was a misspelling or a middle name. I have today got one of my son's to upgrade my membership to Worldwide for me whether it will help me who knows but may as well go the whole hog. I have found that a sister of my paternal Grandmother went to Manitoba early 1900's so perhaps it will help with that. Anyway, thankyou again, Maggie

Firstly, you, like me and almost all of other researchers, have an illegitimate ancestor. Joseph's mother was not married. He was born, or at least living in the workhouse when he was 2 years old, and his unmarried mother was with him then.

In 1881 he is an inmate at a reformatory school. Stdts, MAY mean students, but it could have another meaning. Inmt means, inmate.

If you are very lucky, his mother may have attempted to get some maintenance for this child, and there could be a 'bastardy record' held at the local magistrates court records, but this is extremely unlikely, if he was in the workhouse. You may have to content yourself that you will never know who his father was.

I could be that Jane Beaston got married. There is a marriage in 1876 of a Jane Beaston to a man named Walter Mayhew.

He did not live very long, because on the 1881 census, this Jane is living with her mother and father in laew, and is decscribed as a widow. BUT, it does say she was born in Capel, which is the place of birth listed on the 1871 census, for Jane Beaston. She appears to have had a child to Mr. Mayjew as this child is listed on the 1881 census. It all needs to be proved of course.

Marriages Dec 1876

BEESTON Jane Ipswich 4a	1353
Mayhew Walter Ipswich 4a	1353

Second message.

This appears to be the baptism for Caroline (Revett) The age fits, with the age on the census, and also with the marriage to Robert Revett.

CAROLINE CECILIA ASHKETTLE Female
Birth: St Mary Key Ipswich
Christening: 23 DEC 1821 , Suffolk, England :
Parents:
Father: ISAAC ASHKETTLE
Mother: LUCY

This probably is Robert.
Hi
Don't think I can be of much help to you.The source I have for parish registers for Aldeburgh only go up to 1817.
I think it would be best to get the Fisher/Thorpe marriage certificate to see if she is your lady and its looking like it.
I would have suggested getting the birth cert of Fred Thorpe but was unable to find one, so I think the next step is to look for a baptism in the Aldeburgh registers to see if that reveals anything, especially a father.
Its interesting that the Green family you found had a Margaret in the household and that Robert and Anna had a daughter Margaret.

Beeston, Beaston

Hello everyone, I'm having difficulty with my g-grandfather Joseph Edward Beeston and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Joseph's father is unknown. Joseph was born 9 October 1869, in Tattingstone, Suffolk, England. Joseph's mother was Jane Beeston born 24 April 1850 in Capel St. Mary, England. Show Jane's father as Charlie Beaston, born abt 1824.

Joseph married (have copy of marriage certificate)
Rosa Pyett 12 November 1894 in Ipswich, Joseph's father's name not listed.

Resided at 18 Commercial Road, Ipswich, at time of marriage. The 1881 census for Suffolk has the following entry:

Beeston Joseph age 11 Inmt (stdts) Suffolk Reformatory born Tattingstone Suffolk.

Does anyone know if records for Suffolk Reformatory exists, and if so, how I can access them. Also not sure the meaning of Inmt (stdts) as recorded in 1881 census.

I would like to find out Joseph's father's name. Also need dates of birth and death for Jane Beeston. I'd welcome suggestions on research resources that may aid my search.

Cheers,

Marc
