Firstly, you, like me and almost all of other researchers, have an illegitimate ancestor. Joseph's mother was not married. He was born, or at least living in the workhouse when he was 2 years old, and his unmarried mother was with him then.

In 1881 he is an inmate at a reformatory school. Stdts, MAY mean students, but it could have another meaning. Inmt means, inmate.

If you are very lucky, his mother may have attempted to get some maintenance for this child, and there could be a 'bastardy record' held at the local magistrates court records, but this is extremely unlikely, if he was in the workhouse. You may have to content yourself that you will never know who his father was.

I could be that Jane Beaston got married. There is a marriage in 1876 of a Jane Beaston to a man named Walter Mayhew.

He did not live very long, because on the 1881 census, this Jane is living with her mother and father in laew, and is decscribed as a widow. BUT, it does say she was born in Capel, which is the place of birth listed on the 1871 census, for Jane Beaston. She appears to have had a child to Mr. Mayjew as this child is listed on the 1881 census. It all needs to be proved of course.

Marriages Dec 1876

BEESTON Jane Ipswich 4a	1353
Mayhew Walter Ipswich 4a	1353

Second message.

This appears to be the baptism for Caroline (Revett) The age fits, with the age on the census, and also with the marriage to Robert Revett.

CAROLINE CECILIA ASHKETTLE Female
Birth: St Mary Key Ipswich
Christening: 23 DEC 1821 , Suffolk, England :
Parents:
Father: ISAAC ASHKETTLE
Mother: LUCY

This probably is Robert.
Hi
Don't think I can be of much help to you.The source I have for parish registers for Aldeburgh only go up to 1817.
I think it would be best to get the Fisher/Thorpe marriage certificate to see if she is your lady and its looking like it.
I would have suggested getting the birth cert of Fred Thorpe but was unable to find one, so I think the next step is to look for a baptism in the Aldeburgh registers to see if that reveals anything, especially a father.
Its interesting that the Green family you found had a Margaret in the household and that Robert and Anna had a daughter Margaret.

Hello everyone, I'm having difficulty with my g-grandfather Joseph Edward Beeston and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Joseph's father is unknown. Joseph was born 9 October 1869, in Tattingstone, Suffolk, England. Joseph's mother was Jane Beeston born 24 April 1850 in Capel St. Mary, England. Show Jane's father as Charlie Beaston, born abt 1824.

Joseph married (have copy of marriage certificate)
Rosa Pyett 12 November 1894 in Ipswich, Joseph's father's name not listed.

Resided at 18 Commercial Road, Ipswich, at time of marriage. The 1881 census for Suffolk has the following entry:

Beeston Joseph age 11 Inmt (stdts) Suffolk Reformatory born Tattingstone Suffolk.

Does anyone know if records for Suffolk Reformatory exists, and if so, how I can access them. Also not sure the meaning of Inmt (stdts) as recorded in 1881 census.

I would like to find out Joseph's father's name. Also need dates of birth and death for Jane Beeston. I'd welcome suggestions on research resources that may aid my search.

Cheers,

Marc

The Domesday Book shows that, 1000 years ago, sea-going ships tied up here - now three miles of farmland separate the village from the sea. There were also two churches here, and a thriving community.

Hi Emily
I was just browsing through the web when I came across this, and wondered if your family is the other half of our family tree. My gt gt grandfather Francis Stebbing married twice - his son by the first marriage becoming an acrobat and circus owner in Australia. His son by the second marriage also married twice, the second time to Florence Cooke, with a son(francis) born 1925, and marrying Lillian Scott. A long shot, but any of this familiar?
Mark Harandon
Cornwall
GB

Hi Winifred, I live in Melbourne, Australia. I was born in 1951 and my Dad, Walter Garner Weavers was born in 1920 in Australia to the recently emigrated Frank Weavers and Deborah Garner from Ipswich. His brothers went on to establish a sand and gravel and road building business in Ipswich. A distant forebear, James Weavers, sailed on the second fleet to Australia, where displaying great courage he " singe handedly saved the ship" and was accorded a pardon on the condition that he never return to England. He proceeded to great wealth and a member of the NSW parliament. If I may help further, plese let me know.

Re: ROW: Suffolk Wills - 1700 to 1900

As mentioned in an earlier post of 19 Feb 2006, Samuel ROW (1756-1841) had two families. I can now confirm the name of his first partner as Lydia GREEN. Lydia bore Samuel a son out of wedlock, Samuel ROW GREEN (1768-1869). The Suffolk Record Office, Ipswich Branch hold a record of a Bastardy Bond [FC189/G5/15; 23 APR 178; Wenhaston Parish, Suffolk]: "To indemnify the Guardians of Blything Hundred, from the maintenance, upbringing and education of male bastard child, born to LYDIA GREEN, of BLYFORD." The Bond was paid by "SAMUEL ROW, Yoeman, of the Hamlet of MELLS, in WENHASTON, and WILLIAM ROW, farmer, of BENACRE, in the sum of £50." William was one of Samuel's brothers. Lydia and Samuel seemingly married. Lydia ROW (1747-1814) is buried in the churchyard of St. Peter's Bruisyard near Samuel.

The Suffolk Record Office, Ipswich Branch holds another record of a Bastardy Bond specific to Samuel ROW (1756-1841). That is Bastardy bond [FC 118/G3/9 1817; 24 Jun 1817] which binds "Samuel Row of Bruisyard" to the "Churchwardens and overseers of Bruisyard for £100 to indemnify the parish from the maintenance of a female child born to Elizabeth Howe, singlewoman." This child would have been Ann ROW HOWE, Samuel ROW and Elizabeth HOWE's firstborn. As stated in the post of 19 Feb 2006, Samuel and Elizabeth subsequently married.
