I can't confirm this is her but a Martha BRIMBLE was baptised in Timsbury 25 July 1765 to George and Gertrude BRIMBLE.

Working backwards...

George BRIMBLE married Gertrude HOLBROOK 16 October 1759, St Mary's, Timsbury

A Gertrude HOLBROOK was baptised in Timsbury 14 October 1736 to Samuel and Mary HOLBROOK

Hello gurney99.

My grandmother was Annie Maria Rogers. She married Oliver James Waite at Farmborough in 1901. My great great grandmother was Mary Purnell. She married Ezekiel Waite at Farmborough in 1818. I have yet to investigate the female lines - have been concentrating on the Wait/Waite family so far. So would like to know more about the Purnells and Rogers to get a jump start in the right direction,

Thanks,

Elain

Hi Elain,

I have the following:

1851 Census for 3 Bell Hill, Clutton
Ezekiel WAIT, Head, age 46, Ag. Lab. born Causon, Somerset
Mary WAIT, Wife, age 50, born Farmborough, Som
Fanny WAIT, Daug, age 27, born Farmborough, Som
George WAIT, Son, age 18, born Farmborough, Som

The closest match I could find for 1841 has several discepancies, including Ezekiel's name and all the ages, but many of the names tie in and the oldest occupant looks like a Purnell, so possibly Mary's father:-

Leorys Turnell, 90, Pauper (but looks more like 'Purnell'
Zachariah WAIT, 42, Ag. Lab.
Mary WAIT, 48
Fanny. 16
Ann, 14
George, 11
Thomas, 8

I'll post more later.
Regards

No problem.

The best source is www.freereg.co.uk which has many Somerset registry records.

Hello. I had seen the name Leorys Turnell on the census but it had not occured to me it could be Leorys Purnell not "Turnell". Thanks. I had never come across the name Leorys, so looked it up and it is apparently a Hebrew name. Everybody used to baptise their children with very conventional names like Anne, George, James etc in those days. I wonder if it is indicative of a non-conformist religious background? Another Waite researcher has told me that the parents of Mary Purnell were George and Jane Purnell. About Ezekiel Waite/Zachariah Wait - I have discussed this with other researchers and one theory is that Ezekiel got shortened to Zeke but the census enumerators made a mistake and thought it was Zach and wrote down Zachariah
