Surnames: Radford , Morse
Trying to find the ancestors of George Radford from the village of Winscombe. On 1/09/1839 he married Emma Morse in the parish church of St. George in the county of Gloucester. On the certificate he names his father as John Radford Labourer. O n the 1861 he names his mother as Christiana (pauper) aged 80. I can find no records to confirm. Can anybody help please?

Dave: I've tried without success to attach some files to this post (6 attempts!). Perhaps you could let me have an email address so that I can zip them and attach them to that?

I have HQ images of the following;

1. The baptism of GEORGE RADFORD 15th Nov 1818. Parents John and Sarah.
2. The baptism of JOHN RADFORD 23rd June 1782. Parents James and Rebeckah (sic) (*note that the name is recorded as "Radverd")
3. The marriage of JAMES RADFORD and Rebecca Ogborn 1777 (2nd marriage)
4. The marriage of JAMES RADFORD and Edith Nebbet 1775
5. The burial of EDITH RADFORD 1776
6. The baptism of CHRISTIANA RADFORD 1780. Parents William and Grace RADFORD
7. The baptism of PRISCILLA RADFORD (base born)(mother CHRISTIANA) 1813
8. The marriage of WILLIAM RADFORD and Grace Hancock 1779

From the above, it must be assumed that CHRISTIANA was not George Radford's mother despite the 1861 census saying that she was. The chances are that she was an Aunt of George? There is always the chance, of course, that she was the mother, but not recorded as such. We will never know for sure. A very close friend of mine found out a few years ago that the person he thought was his mother was actually his Aunt and that his real mother was the person he always knew as his grandmother. He was well into his 50's when he discovered the truth (after his 'mother' died).

The Radfords were quite well established in Winscombe at this time, judging by all the register entries. The chances are that I could trace this family back another generation or more, but it will take some time. The further back we go, the harder it becomes to actually read the registers!

How very good of you to try to assist me. my email address is davecheeseman@talktalk.net

I did wonder if Christiana had indulged in an incestuous relationship with her brother but didn't want to dwell on that.

Many thanks once again

Dave
