The 1901 census (when Douglas, his brother
Noel and mother Elizabeth were boarders at a house in Lordship
Lane, Dulwich Common) also gives his birthplace as Gorakhpur, India. His father
Godfrey was presumably still out in India then, as a directory lists G B
Partridge as a resident of Gorakhpur and "persnl. asst. to agent and chf. engr., T. S. ry." in 1895.
The 1881 census has
Godfrey as a student at the Crystal Place School of Engineering and living with his family in Penge. His father (Douglas's grandfather) was Samuel
Bowen Partridge, retired
Dep Surgeon General Bengal
Army.
