Hello Frances
The Vigar brothers you have listed are sons of Henry Richard VIGAR (ca 1854 - 1937)and Emma Charlotte PRINCE (ca 1857 - 1932) who married in 1877.There was another son, Reginald Tom who also went to Canada (I think Reginald Tom married Lilian Ethel SPARLING in 1913)
Henry & Emma also had daughters (Gertrude, Lottie, Sylvia, Daisy, Stella & Sybil)
Desley Hardy, Adelaide, South Australia
Hi there. Shadrach is in Wales in 1851 as well, aged 36, unmarried and lodging with Sarah GOFF, whom he appears to have married in 1855 Pontypool (Sarah's name spelt GOUGH.) The marriage certificate may give the name of Shadrach's father.

An online index says he died in 1856 in Abersychan, Monmouthshire, which is where he is living in 1851. On FreeBMD this is listed as Shadgar FLOWER. Meshach's birth is registered in 1851 Pontypool, if you don't have the certificate you might get more information from that.

You can check the birth and marriage references at:
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

In 1861 Meshach (spelt Meshick) is living with Sarah GOUGH who is widowed. She is listed as 50 yrs of age and born in Thornbury, Gloucestershire.

Curiously on FreeReg there is a baptism in Farmborough in 1817 of a Shadrach with father Paul WOOD and mother Anne FLOWER, might be worth considering?

Hope some of this is useful and apologies if you have this already.
Regards, Patsy - New Zealand

Hi there,
I have found an Anne Cook in my line from Somerset. Taunton specifically I think, though I have come accross mention of West Monkton. Anne changes her name throughout the years as well from Anne, to Ann to Annie. She was born in approz. 1824 and passed away sometime between 1892 and 1901. Her husband was John Milton who later moved back to Taunton (formerly Tawton) after his wife's death and I think lived with Anne's sister Jane Cook.
Let me know if any of this makes sense!
John and Anne had the following children:
Sidney Milton

At least that is all i can find!

Thanks!
Lindsay
ariadic@aol.com

I too am a descendent of James and Sarah Martin, whose son James married Elizabeth Hodges. One of their children was Eliza Martin who married Charles Hopkins and my grandmother was their daughter Maria Hopkins who married Charley Bishoprick from Beverly,Yorkshire and immigrated to New Zealand in 1896 where they eventually ended up at the town of Te Puke in the Bay of Plenty where my mother Clara was born in 1902 and lived all her life.I have been interested in tracing back and have most of the children of each couple except Eliza's family i.e. James and Elizabeth (nee Hodges) children
I would be interested to know the names and important dates of the above family and what occupations each of the families had.
Whilst doing some redearch into our ANSTICE branch I came across your references to links between HUNT and ANSTICE in South Petherton. Soon after I found the following entries in the 1901 Wales census for John Hunt, Station Master from Bridgewater, Somerset staying at the household of Agnes Annie Anstice ( who I believe had just been widowed - which might also explain why so many relatives were staying with her).

Just thought you might be interested if you have not already found them

Regards, Brian

10 Cant?
HUNT family (with a possible ANSTICE link

Hi all.
I have managed to take my Hunt line to the 1851 census, with John and Mary HUNT, parents of my gggrandfather, John, born 1851.
John married a Florence Louisa, in the 1870's.
John was born in Huntspill, Somerset, Florence, I know from the 1881 census, was born in South Petherton.
They were both buried in S. Peth, as were 4 (poss. 5) sons who died from measles as young children.

I visited their grave this week, and expected to find the boys' grave, too, but had no luck with that.
The graves surrounding John and Florence were all ANSTICE's, and it looked as though they were in a family plot, so I wonder whether Florence was an ANSTICE.
This is enforced more by the fact that the grave in front was a Louisa ANSTICE, wife of Joseph ANSTICE. The dedication on the stone also mentioned a Reginald HUNT, grandson who had died 1882, aged 4. If these are indeed the parents of my Florence, I do not know if this is one of the children who died, or not.

I have searched freeBMD for a Florence Louisa ANSTICE, and have found one born in 1852. My Florence Louisa was born 1849, according to her age at death from her grave and memorium card. (died 1926, aged 77)
I have been told it is not impossible that her stone would be wrong, so I am trying to prove a link to the ANSTICE family.
Does anyone have any ideas to link these people, or is the fact they were buried as they were proof enough?

(incedently, in the 1881 census, Reginald HUNT is listed at the home of Joseph and Louisa ANSTICE, at a bakery in South Peth- from the 1851 census, it seems bakery is very much a family business)

Thanks,
Tonia

Hunt/Anstice Update!

I have verified that my Florence was F L ANSTICE.
Following many replies to my previous message, I decided to ignore the age-at-death on her stone, as it seems it was often wrong!
Her age at the census didn't add up, either!!

There is some confusion about her parents, though.
In her birth record, her parents are given as Joseph and Louisa, as I suspected.
In the marriage records, though, her father is given as George ANSTICE.

John HUNT's parents are not the people I thought they were!
In the 1881 census, John's birthplace was given as Huntspill. As there was only one family in the village at the time of his birth, I assumed they were his!
I now have John's birth certificate, and his parents are Thomas of Bridgwater and Mary from Pawlett. They lived in Pawlett in 1851.

Hi, Not sure if you'll get this message as it's been a few years since the last post.
I'm from Merthyr Tydfil and have a locally produced history book called 'Valley Views' which contains a picture of a Miss Agnes A. Anstice who was the postmistress of Abercanaid Post Office, Merthyr Tydfil in 1910. I can send you a copy if you are interested? Also, the surname Hunt is popular in this area today and you may find more leads here.
Regards, Sara Rees
Hi There are a lot of Westcombe's in Somerset. you will find that infact the name of WESTCOMBE has changed to WESCOMBE, and in some instances Wiscombe and other variations. The name Deborah Wescombe, father William mentioned in an earlier reply is in my tree along with many others. I think most of the name difference is through miss transcription etc.
Regards Malcolm

In the parish registers, he is named John Manchester Gill.

“Manchester Jack of Wombwell’s Menagerie was the first lion tamer. In about 1835 he appeared before the public, sitting on the back of Nero, the lion, and opening Nero’s mouth.” (JL Middlemiss: Zoo on Wheels, 1987.) Poor old Nero was, by some accounts, rather elderly.

I have yet to find Gill or any of ‘my’ Bromsgroves in the 1841 census. I guess they were on the road. None of the inns associated with them later were in family hands at that time. In 1841 both of James’ brothers, John & William, were butchers in Taunton but none of James’ family were with them.

Mike
Hi, You may be able to get some information from the church where Mr Sewell was burued. Your Mr Bromsgrove may be interred there as well.

Found in a Google search:
In July 1829 Joseph Neal Sewell a blind giant from Lincolnshire was buried in St Mary Magdalen churchyard. During his life Sewell had made a living by being exhibited in public, at exhibitions and touring shows, but lately had made friends with a Taunton man called Mr Bromsgrove. He was reputedly staying with another friend, Mr Luxton, when he died and in accordance with his wishes he was buried in the local churchyard. Many people visited the huge and hence unusual grave on the North side of the tower.

Good luck in your search.
Dorothy Nagy

Hi Ron,

I see that you are interested in Knott Farm, Dinnington,Somerset,England. I am descended from the Knott family that owned the farm at Dinnington and would be interested to know if you are descended from this family as I have a great deal of information about them.

Regards,

Christopher )England)

Hi Celia,
Thank you very much for going the extra mile for me. I sometimes do the same thing when a person or family captures my attention. Since discovering this family about a week ago, I've made contact with a descendant on Genes Reunited who is my 3rd cousin once removed. His mother has done an extensive research on the family. Another Partridge and GR member who is descended from a branch which wasn't in India asked me if I knew anything about them. Now, thanks to you, I can tell him a bit and steer him towards the obit link you provided. Thanks again for finding the time to help. You're a dear! Kind regards, Dave

Do you know about all the Indian links? In case not, as it is such an interesting family, I couldn't resist delving a bit further ...

The 1901 census (when Douglas, his brother Noel and mother Elizabeth were boarders at a house in Lordship Lane, Dulwich Common) also gives his birthplace as Gorakhpur, India. His father Godfrey was presumably still out in India then, as a directory lists G B Partridge as a resident of Gorakhpur and "persnl. asst. to agent and chf. engr., T. S. ry." in 1895.

The 1881 census has Godfrey as a student at the Crystal Place School of Engineering and living with his family in Penge. His father (Douglas's grandfather) was Samuel Bowen Partridge, retired Dep Surgeon General Bengal Army.

There is an obituary of Samuel Bowen PARTRIDGE here:
http://www.bmj.com/cgi/pdf_extract/1/1950/1296
and there must be a lot more information about the family elsewhere.

Your Francis wasn't a Frederick by any chance? It's just a brother of my ancestor Mary Ann is called Frederick b.1859 in Montacute.

Also the name Lowe doesn't crop up anywhere in your research does it, as it appears my Montacute's changed their name to Lowe at some point.
