I am looking for information on the Hopkins family from the Petworth area. The oldest Hopkins I have confirmed is James Hopkins 1780 and his wife Sarah Ayling. They were married 20 May 1802 in Fittleworth. If this sounds familiar please reply as I,m stuck at this point in my history of the family.

I am looking for information on Mary Weller who was born abt 1864 in Lewes, East Sussex. She married Albert Banks, son of William Banks and Grace Pett. William was born in Seaford, moved to London and then to Lewes where he became a newsagent/emigration agent. Albert was born in Lewes. Albert's sister Grace married George Douglas Weller. I assume this was Mary's brother. These individuals are all mentioned by name in William's will.

I also know that we are related as your great grandmother Ada was the younger sister of my great grandfather David.
Have you managed to get any further than Solomon and Mary? If so, could you let me know as my father, Tony Fuller, and myself are trying to delve further. We are both from Lewes so it would be interesting to know if you are as well as my grandmother was a Baker who married a Fuller.
Many thanks, Sam Fuller (Samantha really)

you are welcome Glenda

I did a bit more searching-- as I like to find "juicy bits" as well--
Henry and Augusta were married in 1879 Dec. q.
Was searching through my info and found the following from the local studies library of Hastings:

We have very little information about the school or home where Isabel was at the time of the 1881 Census.
It was generally known as the "Girls Training Home", though in the 1891 Census it is listed as "Girls Orphan Home". The Home's address was 45 Tackleway, Hastings, in the parish of All Saints. The Home
was founded in 1873 and was an undenominational institution for "orphaned and friendless girls", aged from about six to sixteen.
Matron there for nearly twenty-five years was Miss Hannah Dunning, who died in February 1910.
The Home continued up to the time of the Second World War.
I regret we have no archives from the home and do not know of any records held elsewhere.
We are newly searching our FREEMAN line and found an Isabel Freeman in the Hastings - All Saints Girls Home in the 1881 Census.

Is there someone out there who has any information about this home - i.e. is it an orphanage or a residential school?

Isabel Kate Freeman was born in Hastings, Sussex in 1868 - father Thomas Freeman, baker.

Also the Selsey Arms.

If anyone can help me with the above surnames. Or if you have any of them in your tree I would be grateful if you would share what information you have.

Kind Regards

Kerry x

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, Kerry. Give me a few days to sort out my Humphreys notes and I should have something for you. I have found a Frederick Humphreys 1836 who was the son of William, one of George's younger brothers. I knew about the Selsey Arms too so it's all coming together - I had it on my list of places to go when I manage to get down to Sussex.
George Humphrey 1803 - 1850 was the brother of my second great grandmother Caroline Humphrey. Their father was James Humphrey a shoemaker originally from West Dean but moved to Slindon. George married Elizabeth Eure and they ran the Selsey Arms in West Dean. Elizabeth was widowed in 1850. They had at least 5 children - James, George, Emma, Charles and Ann. I would be interested to know how that fits in with your family tree/connection to the Humphrey family - I am not related to the Eures directly as far as I know.

Hi

Many Thanks for getting in touch. This is a strange set up on my family tree if Im being honest. If I lose u then Im sorry. I am related thru the Eure's, Elizabeth Eure was the sister of my gggg grandmother Ann Eure. The link between my side of the family and yours doesnt stop there. Ann Eure had a daughter my ggg grandmother Ann Hewson and she married into the Humphrey family too she married Frederick Humphrey(s)and had a number of children many died and 3 survived, when she was widowed. She then went on to marry John Dunn and had another lot of children, I am related thru this side. So Im not related to the Humphrey's by blood. It seems many of my family ran public houses Ann Eure was a publican too but yet to find out which public house she ran. The Eure's also ran the crown and anchor in Dell Quay for over 40 years and were also ship builders and Quay master. I took a trip there last year and actually stayed at the crown and anchor, and did a search in the West Sussex area. even visiting the selsey arms. I would love to hear from u again as I didnt know about Caroline. If you would like to contact me via email then the address is kerry.powell2@btinternet.com

Hope I havent confused you too much.

Kerry xx

Frank Farncombe was my grandfather. He died around 1929-30 and was a freelance journalist. His best known work was a novel called "Ruled by Radio" of which I have an original edition. I know very little of his early years and all his children- my mother and aunts- are now dead. He married my grandmother after 1918.
My aunt told me he died of kidney disease and it seemes to have been unexpected,or sudden.

Hi Pam,
I hope you can forgive me?
I have only just seen your reply to me on the message Board for my search for SHIRLEY's in Sussex.

The only reason that I checked was that an email came through from someone else via the same board just a few moments ago, 5pm on 25th Oct. I am most dreadfully sorry not to have thanked you, but, I did not get the reply from you to my inbox as we usually do.

I am very grateful, and will certainly look into the info that you have sent me.
Kindest Regards,
Carol
Darryl
My dates were incorrect. Alfred Raglus was born in Worthing in 1852. Worthing is about 1.5km south of Broadwater in Sussex.

I SUSPECT that Alfred and Daniel were brothers. They both lived in Eaglehawk and both got married there. I understand that Daniel moved to the Colbinabin area and Alfred certainly moved to the Rushworth area.

I would appreciate any information.

There is also a booklet held by the Shepparton Family History Group has a booklet on the Raglus family, but I don't know yet which line of the family.

Best regards
Terry Waters

The Daniel RAGLUS b.1840, who was my 2GGrandfather, is the brother of John RAGLUS b.1819 and therefore uncle of your Alfred b.1852.

Daniel and Eliza nee SHERWOOD had a son Daniel Walter b. 1861 in Berkshire and it is this second Daniel that I gather married at Colbinabbin. He and your Alfred were cousins. Incidentally, he was baptised as plain Dan but was, according to my grandmother, always know as Walter in the family.

Daniel Snr & family emmigrated in 1865 and moved to Colbinnabin by 1870 where the sixth child, Ellen Elizabeth, was born 20 Nov 1870. In 1875 he was a Farmer at Colbinabbin and in 1876 was farming at Waranga, Rushworth with his nephew Alfred. The family moved from Rushworth to Elmore, Lonwood and finally to NSW where he was the publican at the Medway Hotel near Dubbo from 1891 to 1898.

There's a bit more if you are interested but this is not really your line so I'll stop there. I've seen the online reference to the Shepparton pamphlet and gather that it mostly refers to your Alfred and his father. No chance of me getting to Shepparton but it would be interesting to find out what's in it as obviously the families were close.

I've fairly reliably traced the RAGLUS lineage back to Henry RAGLASS b abt 1685 so if you'd like some more info feel free to message me with your private e-mail & Ill get in touch.

Cheers, Darryl

RAGLUS is a rare name Terry, but I can't yet identify your Alfred b. abt 1842. I have Alfred bapt. 17 April 1853 at Broadwater, Sussex father John and mother Jane nee PASCOE. He was 1 y/o when his family emmigrated to Melbourne in 1854.

There is also his uncle Alfred, bapt. 21 Sep 1828 at Shipley, Sussex father John, mother Hannah, nee RHODES/RHOADES.

There is another Alfred RAGLUS but he died at only 6 months old in Nov 1865. He was the son of Daniel and Eliza nee SHERWOOD. Daniel (my 2GGrandfather) was the brother of John who married Jane PASCOE as above.

Could you give some more info on your John bapt. 1842 please?

Regards Darryl

Darryl
I am intested in your line. I don't have any blood line connection but I married into the Slee family with my grandmother in-law being Edith Raglus, daughter of Alfred Raglus who was born in Sussex in 1853 and married Mary Jane Hosking. I have been doing genealogy for alomost 40 years now on and off. I use Family Tree Maker and can read Gedcom files. We are trying to resolve a religious issue so any background information would be useful.

My address is terry_waters@westnet.com.au. I now live in Perth but was raised in Bendigo.

Appreciate your help.

Best regards
