SALT of Staffordshire

Hello

After some discussion with members of my family I decided to look into the origins of my surname SALT. My name is Nusi Salt (Tongan/English descent). My great grandfather Bertram John Salt emigrated from Staffordshire, England to Tonga (locn. South Pacific) and married my great grandmother.
His parents were Charles Salt & Cecile (nee Hawthorne). If anyone knows has useful info. then I'll be glad to hear from you.

ps - Keith your tips seem to be a good place to start my quest.

Unfortunately, the name Salt is all over Staffordshire like a rash and it seems to have a number of unrelated lines but, as I said before, with two forenames you should be able to trace your ancestor's birth fairly easily in the GRO records and be sure it's him. It wouldn't hurt to join the Birmingham & Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry (which isn't half as stuffy as its title suggests!), which covers Staffordshire. You'll be able to get a lot of help and guidance that way. Plus, there's a Rootsweb Staffordshire list that's peopled by a pretty friendly bunch.

Regards,
Keith
