ELIZA RAVINE b.1839 married Samuel KITCHEN, Country of Stafford

I have my gggrandmother ELIZA RAVINE information stated
below any leads would help, thank you.
Eliza Ravine, born 1839 in France.married Samuel Alfred Kitchen 1863 at Trinity Church, Parish of Amblecote in Country of Stafford, England.. Registrated in Stourbridge, England. (Have copy of marriage certificate). Eliza Ravine's father was Frederick Ravine. It is said that Ravine was sent to England from France, where apparently she had been a maid fo French royalty. She met and married Samuel, our gg grandfather in England. It is also rumored that she is related some way to "Singer" family of sewing machine fame. She came to Canada with the last of her family and left Samuel behind in England. Lived in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Clipping from old Moose Jaw paper, May 13, 1910.
"Eliza (Ravine) KITCHEN - The death occurred suddenly yesterday afternoon, on Main Street, South Hill, of Mrs Kitchen, aged 68 years. Mrs Kitchen lived with her daughter Mrs. Shelton (Sarah Anne Kitchen /Aunt Terry). Her health was apparently of the best in the morning and she attended to household duties as usual. In the afternoon about 2:30 she went upstairs to lie down, and was found a short time later, dead. Heart failure was the cause."

"by" or "bg poolside", Staffs, Newcastle under Lyme, CARLON birth cert.

Dear listmembers,

I got a birthcert for my GrndMthr from GRO.
She was born in 1901 in Staffs Newcastle (under Lyme).
But On the certificate, the place of birth is as
noted above in addition it states -- either "bg poolside" or "by poolside" ---
it is hard to make out but it is either of the two.

I have been trying to research this and I am unable to find what it means exactly. A town close by -- Madeley -- seems to be a road in that town/village called poolside, but I doubt that this is the reference as I do not think they noted streets on birthcerts.

Is it more likely someplace else....can anyone tell me is a place was called by poolside?

The surname BTW is CARLON, parents Michael and Catherine, and the birth cert is for Annie, born 1901. She was my GrndMthr as noted. Other CARLONS were born there too I think.

If anyone can assist me with my search back to my Great Grand Parents and beyond it would be greately appreciated.

My Grandfather was Leonard Thomas Smith who lived in Quarry Bank which was then South Staffordshire for what I believe was all his life with a short trip to North Africa in WW2. He was born 20th March 1920 to Leonard Smith and I think his wifes name was Helen (though I cannot confirm this) I know my Great Grandfather was 9438 Pte Leonard Smith of the South Staffordshire Regiment in 1915 and was discharged from the Army 7/10/15. Other than that the trail has become a little hard to follow. I believe Leonard was from a well to do family originating from somewhere on the South Coast but again I am not completely sure of this info and on top of that I am not sure if he was born on the South Coast or in the Staffordshire area.

Can anyone put me back on a trail?

JOHNSON familes of Staffordshire or point me in the right area.

I would love informatino on the following

Thanks Tony L. Johnson TonyempireOre@msn.com
This is part of several reports on Edward Johnson's of Virginia to try and separate where each of them Ended up. This is the first recorded Edward Johnson who arrived in 1621 on the Abigail and it shows where he and his neighbors ended up.

The First lands identified with Edward Johnson of Strawberry Banckes in Elizabeth City Corporation beyond Hampton Lands. Edward Johnson’s lands of Strawberry Banckes are on the Border of Elizabeth City and James City County in 1627. These lands will change County Lines and Parishs many times through the years but the neighbors will show us where and what time era to look for information on Edward Johnson of Strawberry Banckes or of Strawberrie Banckes.

1645 Aug 2 in Elizabeth City we find one Thomas Watts as the Neighbor of Edward Johnson and his lands border Broad Creek

Edward Johnson's lands would be beside Lyonel Roulstons and Christopher Wormely, it should be noted that Marke Johnson was also a Neighbor of Christopher Wormeley with his lands being on Back Water.

From following Information recorded below we now know that Edward Johnson of Strawberry Banckes died in York County abt 1657. He left Land to his son Edward Johnson, his wife's Name was Mary, he had connections to a John Johnson and a Luke Johnson.

The Lands of Edward Johnson of Strawberry Banckes leaves to his son Edward Johnson to inherit when he turned of Age after 1657 Would then be in York County, Colonial Virginia.

In 1657 LTC William Barber and Mr. John Hanford made the Division of the Lands of the Late Edward Johnson of Strawberry Banckes in which 2/3rd of these lands went to Edward Johnson son and Hier of the Late Edward Johnson "Of Strawberry Banckes" and 1/3 then would go to his Widow Mary (Johnson).

The lands that Edward Johnson gave in 1632 to Luke Johnson and John Johnson should also be in York County, Colonial Virginia in 1657 as these were lands original were owned by Lyonel Roulston- Rowlston (possible Royston) lands.

Luke Johnson was from England per his will. In his will he mentions John Banister who owns lands Beside Joseph Johnson off Merchants Hope.

We now know that Joseph Johnson is also a Merchant From London of England. Luke Johnson In his will dated June 1659 he also mentioned his Uncle, John Turton, of West Bromwich Co., Stafford, gent. Luke Johson left his estates in England to his wife Mary Johnson.

This gives us clues that Luke Johnson’s Uncle was called a Gentleman, so he must of owned lands in West Bromwich Co. Stafford England. It also gives us the clues that LUKE JOHNSON owned other lands in England per his will.

The Last thing I can find on a Strawberrie Bancks deeds is in 1648 deed to Maj. Richard Morrison whose land is by Mr. Neale. IN this time era John Neale who died about December, 1644, and his widow subsequently married David Dale and removed to York County. John Neale left no will of record in Accomac. He sold his plantation prior to his death and transferred his personality to Anne Littleton, wife and attorney of Col. Nathaniel Littleton, on the 17th of November, 1644. On the following day the same property was conveyed to Margaret Neale, his daughter. But Mr. Neale is still mentioned in the 1648 Deed on Richard Morrison whose lands are also by the Fort Field in Elizabeth City Co.

We also have learned that the Wormelys are related to the Armisteads, the Thornton families and they are related to the Bassett families, and the Churchill families of Early Colonial Virginia. These families all have ties to later research with the Washington and Ball Families (who have an Earlier Connections to the Bennet Families). It should be noted these families also own lands by Marke Johnson and by Nicholas Hill families who are married to the Bennett families of England

Thanks Tony

I'm hoping someone can help me with my research on the FAULKNER surname.

I've been trying for years to research my 3rd-great-grandmother, Jane Ann "Ann"(FAULKNER) SIRES/SYRES/SAYERS, who came from England sometime before 4 July 1842 when her first child was born in Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana. I've been unable to find any trace of Ann or her husband Joseph SIRES/SYRES/SAYERS on immigration records, or a marriage record for them in England or Indiana. Here's what I have on my 3rd-great-grandparents...

Husband: Joseph SIRES/SYRES/SAYERS
Birth: 1820 in England
Marriage: Unknown
Emigration: Bef. 4 July 1842
Death: 13 February 1852 in Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana
Father: Unknown
Mother: Unknown

Wife: Jane Ann FAULKNER
Birth: 07 September 1821 in England (Staffordshire?)
Emigration: Bef. 4 July 1842
Death: 08 October 1875 in Union City Township, Allamakee County, Iowa
Father: Joseph FAULKNER
Mother: Unknown

Her father's name was Joseph FAULKNER, and he emigrated to the USA as well. I have no idea what her mother's name was, and whether she came to the USA or died in England.

Name: Joseph FAULKNER
Birth: 19 April 1799 in England
Marriage: Unknown
Emigration: Bef. 1848
Death: 12 January 1884 in Allamakee County, Iowa
Father: Unknown
Mother: Unknown

Ann's sister, Sarah (FAULKNER) BEARDMORE has been much easier to research, giving me a few clues on the family, but not much. Here's what I've dug up thus far...

Husband: William BEARDMORE Sr.
Birth: 26 October 1823 in Tean near Cheadle, Staffordshire, England
Marriage: 31 October 1847 in St. Martin's Church, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England
Census: 30 March 1851 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England
Emigration: 1853 Sailed from Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Death: 28 January 1917 in Union City Township, Allamakee County, Iowa
Father: John BEARDMORE
Mother: Elizabeth MILNER

Wife: Sarah FAULKNER
Birth: 29 October 1825 in Staffordshire, England
Census: 30 March 1851 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England
Emigration: 12 September 1853 Sailed from Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Death: 24 May 1896 in Union City Township, Allamakee County, Iowa
Father: Joseph FAULKNER (Listed as Thomas FAULKNER on her marriage certificate...hmmm)
Mother: Unknown

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction on where to find more information on my Faulkner line.
Seeking information about my great great grandfather, Joseph Tomlinson, born in England, 7 Jan 1830. None of the records in the USA show from where in England he emigrated, however, there is a possibility that he was the son of Thomas Tomlinson and Maria Hale, both from Sedgley, Staffordshire County England. Does anyone have further information about this family?

Trying to find my GGG grandfather Richard Dodd. Came across one on 1841 census for Parish of Sedgeley, in a district called Briesby/Briesly does anyone know where this district would be on a modern map, I looked but couldn't find it. Did think it might be Brierley, but the spelling was so very different.

Just wanted to see if the area fitted with what I know about him so far.

marriage of Thomas MAYER, born in Stoke On Trent, to Frances HUDSON about 1818

Can anyone help please? I am trying to find records of Thomas Mayer’s marriage to Frances Hudson about 1818. Through this I hope to find Thomas Mayer’s Father’s name. I know that Frances Hudson’s father was Joseph Hudson born about 1774 and her mother was name Fanny Preston.

My main interest at this time is to learn as much as I can about the Mayer side of my family tree, I do know that he was a master potter, but I have made the mistake of following the wrong Thomas Mayer at least I think so as there were 2 Thomas Mayer’s born about the same time and both were born in Stoke On Trent the Thomas Mayer that I thought was a part of my tree had a father called Samuel and Mother called Margaret Peggy Pepper. This Thomas however was not married to Frances Hudson, so it seems that I have got the wrong Thomas as I say, so if anyone can enlighten me I would be most grateful. Indecently if anyone would like to learn more about the other Thomas and his family including the Pepper side I do have a fair amount of information so please feel free to contact me.
Regards Jim.
He was the son of John and Julianne (Dowling) Prendergast.

He was a medical doctor in Hanley and spent much of his life researching the effects of lead on the life span of people working in the pottery industry including a 1898 book, "The Potter and Lead Poisoning".

He was married to Marie V. ARNOUX and they had 2 sons, John and Maurice. Marie died in 1923 and then he married Sarah E. BROWN in 1927. He emigrated to the USA by 1859, when he married Martha Burnett in Cannelton, Perry County, Indiana. They eventually settled in Scranton, Osage County, Kansas. Thomas and Maria of Lower Gonal, Sedgley, Staffordshire County, England, had at least 2 other children (Richard and Selena) who emigrated to the USA. Richard (spouse Tamar Bradley) settled in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, while Selena (spouse James Cooper), lived in Pittsburgh for awhile and then relocated to Ohio. Does anyone have any information about this family?

I have tried the IGI but drawn a blank.

I have his marriage certificate (he married Mary Elliott in Manchester in 1856) and from this I know that his father's name was John Brown, a Confectioner by profession!

If anyone has access to Tamworth parish records and can find Henry's baptism, I would love to know his mother's name and if he had any siblings. Also, if anyone can find his census info pre-1861, I would be very grateful.

Many thanks!

Robert was born in Wednesbury in 1866, i'm not sure if Wednesbury is in Staffordshire or Warwickshire.
He married my GG grandmother Mary Ann Fitzpatrick in 1888 in Aston Warwickshire. On his marriage certificate his mothers name Mary Jane Ireland has been entered in the space where fathers name and occupation should be.
I have checked the 1871 and 1881 census' for Robert and found no trace of him or his mother. My great aunt says this is because they were travellers and of Spanish origin.
Also one of the witnesses to Robert Irelands marriage was Robert Ireland.
Any information that anyone may have would be greatly recieved.

Avril.

I do not know anything of your Taylors but was interested in the Crockett Lane - I am researching a Joseph Crockett of Staffordshire who was sent as a convict to Tasmania in 1838 - he left behind a wife Mary and two children. The IGI records point to Smethwick and show Mary and Joseph with sons Samuel and Joseph. On his convict records it states he was a tailor by trade.
I apologise that this has absolutely nothing to do with your Taylors - it was just the closest thing I have found - do you know anything about Crockett's Lane?

Moses TUDOR who was born in West Bromwich

Hi there,

I'm looking for Moses Tudor who was born in West Bromwich, on the 1901 census he is showing as 24 years old (D.O.B approx 1877)residing at Claypitt Lane West Bromwich UK however we can not find any birth or death cert the only other entry we can find is his marriage to Sarah Jane Whitehouse. My grandad Thomas Tudor did tell me that his dad (Moses Tudor) died when he was 2 years old in 1921. There is however another Moses Tudor who died in 1921 but his D.O.B was 1875 not 77 and he was from Wales.

There is apparantly some "mystery" surrounding the family name and we would ideally like to get some help to get to the bottom of it. I hope all the info makes sense.

Many Thanks

Does anyone know of two Staffordshire sisters/half sisters Elizabeth Cheadle & Emma Snape? Elizabeth was the second wife of my ancestor John Vernon. They married in 1904 in Trent Vale,Staffordshire. Emma was a witness at the wedding. Elizabeth is listed as a spinster on the marriage certificate. Her father is listed as Charles Cheadle, Carter by profession. I cannot find any record of a Charles Cheadle of the right age with a daughter Elizabeth.
I have found an Elizabeth Cheadle born to Sarah Cheadle 1859/60. Sarah Cheadle later married Charles Snape in 1865 and had several other children amongst them Emma born 1867.
Any further information gratefully received.

Who is Emma WALTHO b. 1845 - 1854, married on 1875 Acton Trussell ?

I need help. I have lucked out at all the usual sources with this lady, she is a mystery, she seems to have appeared in the records in the late 1870's when she got married...

This is what I know:

EMMA WALTHO was born sometime between 1845- 1854.
She married Joseph Rayson by banns at the parish church of Acton Trussell on 25th May 1875. The witnesses were Richard Davis and Lucy Ann Cotton - of the 4 only Joseph made his mark the rest signed.

The father's name was left blank on the wedding certificate so she may well have been illigitimate.

She doesn't show up in the census until 1881 Quarry Heath, Penkridge, Cannock age 33, place of birth is Wednesbury.
In 1891 she is in Hatherton, Cannock, Gailey Cum Hatherton age 43 born wednesbury. In 1901 she is in Fishponds Shenstone, Upper Stonall, Shenstone age 53, wednesbury.

None of the Waltho's in earlier census or in the IGI seem to fit her

If anyone fancies a challenge I could do with the help - alternatively can anyone suggest any other sources I could try I would welcome the input

Death by Drowning in Canal 1929

Whilst researching a death in Cannock I came across a newspaper report(The Times)of an coroners inquiry in Tettenhall. The inquiry was adjourned and I can't find the outcome.

In Nov/Dec 1929 a 3 year old girl was found in the canal near Dillingsdale by a boatman Charles Stokes. The girl had a firebrick tied round her waist. She seemed quite well dressed with a strawberry coloured dress, fur round coak collar and yellow slippers.

Just wondering if anyone else has come across this one and knows what happens - The Times database doesn't have a follow up and it will be awhile before I get a chance to check the local papers

I am looking for information regarding my Great Grandfather Robert (known as Bob) Pountney. This may be a red herring as there appears to be a family trait of using a second forename. His entry on the Marriage index does show him as Robert.
He married Rosena Barratt (or Barrett) in 1909, and lived in Coseley/Bradley area.
He died around 1953 in Motherwell Scotland whilst visting his sister "Annie Gordan". I understand that there may have been other relatives in Scotland, but have no evidence or names at the moment.
He was brought back to the Midlands to be buried.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I am looking for any info on the Smith family, particulary Thomas Smith born in 1796/7 in the Cheddleton/Mayfield area he married Mary, born in Ashbourne in 1796 she could have possibly been Mary Heathcote (sister to William). On the 1861 census for Ashbourne they have their neice living with them Sarah Heathcote (mispelt Heaghcote born in Ashbourne 1841), she is the daughter of WIlliam Heathcote and Eliza Wigley. Ten years later Thomas appears onthe 1871 census living in Mellor Derbyshire with his nephew George Smith born in 1835 in Sutton Cheshire. I am looking for any info about George or his uncle Thomas, I have a mysterious letter dated 1860, Ashbourne from a James and Sarah smith which was in my grandads belonging in Mellor so I am trying to make a connection as the letter mentions Sarah Heathcote.
Many thanks to anyone who can help, I am particulary trying to discover whether James Smith who wrote the letter could be brother to Thomas and Georges father,

Hello. I am looking for volunteers to take some photographs of tombstones / markers at Bloxwich Cemetery in West Midlands, Staffordshire, England.

In particular, I am looking for the following:
Edward Clews, unk- 11 May 1876, Division A, Section 2, grave space 44. I would also like photos of surrounding tombstones. If you come across any other CLEWS or BUTTERY names I would appreciate those as well!

Although this particular name is of interest to me for my own family research, I am also interested in engaging the interest of others who might be willing to take photographs and submit them to findagrave.com. Normally, within the US, that is, volunteers living near particular cemeteries would accept requests to visit the cemetery and snap photos of requested gravesites, tombstones, etc. I, myself, visit cemeteries when I travel to assist with this effort. However, for the sites listed outside the US there is no such system.

If you are interested, please visit findagrave.com for more information. If there is a similary preservatory site for England's cemeteries, i would greatly appreciate knowing.

http://www.findagrave.com

Many thanks!

Is anyone researching this name in Walsall/Willenhall/Darleston ?

I have lost the family of James Chappelle, a builder (b Bristol c1825) and his wife Caroline.

(children James Brookes, Laura, Alfred (or Halford) Henry, Walter Horace, Ada Louise)

I have them in the census and the births, deaths and marriages until about 1871 and then they disappear completly. He is mentioned in some of the trade directories up to about the same time. Admittedly I haven't checked any trade directory after 1871 as I haven't found them on line yet and its going to be a long time before I can visit local archives.

Am begining to think they may have emigrated, but on line passenger lists don't seem to start until the 1890's.

Love to hear from anyone who might suggest where he is...

Can anyone please help me? I am researching my Great Grandfather and cannot trace birth record despite knowing so much about his Army records. He enlisted Feb 1891 at Hamilton - Scottish Rifles No 3855. Records state that he was 20 years and 9 months born Stafford. Next of kin is listed Mother Mary Jones Stafford. I know from Edward's marriage record to Annie White (in Carisbrooke I.O.W.) that Edwards father's name was Thomas, a farmer. Yet still unable to trace Edwards birth record or any census info for 1871 or 1881 Edward served 12 years Scottish Rifles. I have been stuck for over a year now and would really appreciate any help or advice. Please help

BAGOT,BAGGOT, BAGGOTT - tour of Blithfield Hall & St leonards Admaston, Rugeley,Staffordshire 7th Sept. 2008

VISIT & TOUR OF BLITHFIELD HALL & ST LEONARD’S CHURCH
Admaston, Rugeley
Staffordshire
WS15 3NL
England
One of the homes of the BAGOT’s and their derivative families.
By arrangement with Cost Bagot Jewitt, Charlie Bagot Jewitt and Nancy Lady Bagot
Sunday 7th September 2008
St Leonard’s Church Service – optional. 9.00 am for 9.15 am
Tour of Blithfield Hall 10.30 am for 10.45 am
Optional – meet at St Leonard’s Church at 9.00 am (via church car park – turn left down Lea Lane, 200 yards before the Hall drive, if coming from Rugeley. Follow for about 1½ miles then turn right down church drive). Charlie Bagot Jewitt will be playing the organ and it gives a lovely introduction to the Blithfield Tour & the Bagot’s.
Tour of Blithfield Hall and Gardens 10.45 am – It would be best if those people not attending Church at 9.15 am come to the Church car park anyway (and not the Hall car park) at 10.30 am ish as Charlie will cover the church part of the tour after the Church Service. We can then walk through the lynch gate all together and have a cup of coffee before having a look around the house and gardens. Your own arrangements for Lunch after the Tour.
There is also the option of visiting Tutbury Castle not far away, following on in the footsteps of Richard Bagot (1552 -1597). There is a music concert being played on that afternoon at 2.00 pm. Circlus bring their unique brand of medieval music to Tutbury Castle with special guests handpicked by Circulus themselves which will enhance your viewing and listening pleasure.
The Abbots Bromley Horn Dance occurs the next day. Starts at 7 or 7.30 am on Monday 8th September, with a Church blessing in Abbots Bromley. They then dance/walk a route with several stops on the way to arrive at Admaston about 11-12 and onto the Hall from 12 noon. Timings are a bit hit & miss and it seems to depend on the level of hospitality en route! They dance in front of Blithfield Hall then stop for lunch. Do bring a picnic (fingers crossed it doesn’t rain!). They move on and end up back in the village about 3 to 4pm. Do a loop from the village, returning at about 6pm. Then the party starts with all the pubs open, other folk dancers (Morris, Clog etc) often turn up for a dance too etc – great fun – if its sunny.
Contact: Jim North jim.north@wanadoo.fr to reserve tickets for the visit to the Hall or for more information. Places are limited so a prompt response is advised.

I am trying to find out the history of The Seven Stars Inn, in Wall, including confirming where it is... it is not the Volunteer (the current pub) as in I think it was the 1891 census, both pubs are shown.

I think it has been converted into a house at some point, there is a Seven Stars cottage not far from the Roman museum.

(From about 1841(possibly from about 1821) it was run by the HOLMES family. James HOLMES (m Mary JOBBERNS) d c1842... he had at least 4 children Maria (married ? HARVEY and then POYNER, Edward/Edwin, James (m Ellen WHITEHEAD) and Charlotte.

* the HARVEY's and POYNERS went into the grocery trade in Walsall)

If anyone knows anything about the history of the Inn then I would be very interested to hear as local history books tend to concentrate on Wall's roman past (and I'm not THAT far back...!)

LIMER Families from Uttoxeter

My GG Grandfather GEORGE LIMER was born 1826 in Uttoxeter Staffordshire to parents James Limer and Ellen Kent.
George married MARY ANN COWLISHAW in London 1851. At the time of their marriage George stated his father James as being deceased. In the 1851 Directory for Staffordshire a John Limer of Carter street Uttoxeter is listed as a joiner , cabinet maker , upholster . A James Limer of Parks was listed as Farmer and grazier. I beleive these to be brothers of George. Mary Ann Cowlishaw was born 1831 at Uttoxeter to parents John Cowlishaw and Elizabeth SMITH, who married in 1829. John was a shoemaker. Elizabeth died aged 33 years in 1837. Can anybody throw any light on this family please! I am most interested in when and where James Limer and his wife Ellen nee Kent died. Any clues as to how I might find out.

Mystery Staffordshire Parish

In 1854 Mary Ann SHAW married Charles EAST in Melbourne Victoria, having emmigrated on the Star of the East in 1853. In the parish register she gives her father as William SHAW and mother Martha Nudge and age as 21 (a fib I'm sure).

I'm unable to decipher the good vicar's hand to tell the parish within which she was born. Hopefully a good copy is attached.

To me it starts with 'O' and ends with 'bury' None of this fits the parish names for Staffordshire on GENUKI, Bushbury, Hanbury, Norbury,Tutbury, Wednesbury or even Ogley Hay.

Can anyone decipher it for me? Help, I'm stumped.

Darryl, Sydney Australia

Alice Matilda SMITH b. Staffordshire?

In the 1881 census, Alice Matilda Bailey (of Coulsdon, Surrey) gives her birthplace as Cradley and her age as 24. Someone has suggested that staffordshire rather than worcestershire might be her birth county. I think her maiden name was alice matilda smith. Please could someone help?

I think she had a child at an early age - and in Wales (possibly Cardiff - though in the census the district given is Glyncordwy which corresponds to no identifiable registration district and I think might be a mistranscription for a street in Cardiff). Alice Matilda Smith and William Bailey appear to have been married in 1879 in Woolwich.

Thanks to anyone who is able to fill in any details.

I am looking for information about Elizabeth Law Wilcox Gould. She was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England about 1870-74. She was married to Thomas Wilcox in the 1891 census. They had 2 children, George and Ethel. Thomas passed away and she, eventually, married an Arthur Gould, who is also from West Bromwich. They came to the USA in 1902 or so. They lived in Wilkes Barre PA. Arthur died in 1920. He did have 2 brothers and 1 sister still living in England. He is buried in the Wilkes Barre City Cemetery.
If anyone can help me, it would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Connie

BETTERIDGE Manslaughter in Tamworth in 1860

Hello - I hope someone can help me

It looks as if my GG Grandad may have been the skeleton in my family cupboard. He was John Betteridge b 1813 at Measham who lived at Tamworth with his wife Elizabeth nee Lakin - he was a coal miner.

I have recently received my GG Grandmother's death certificate - she died on 12/5/1860 - the Cause of Death is stated as being 'Manslaughter by husband' - info from the Coroner of Warks following inquest on 18/5/1860.

That was a bit of a shock, I can tell you. I wonder what happened.

What I don't quite understand is that he was obviously not imprisoned for the crime as I have found him living with his 4 youngest daughters on the 1861 census - maybe they treated him leniently so the children would not become a burden on the parish. Perhaps he was tried but not convicted - I'd dearly like to know.

I understand that the coroners records have not survived. I would be very interested if anyone would have any other ideas about finding any info about this. Do you know what the local newspaper for Tamworth would have been at the time? I live in Kent so I will not be able to visit the local archives myself.

Many thanks and best wishes

Alison

My gggg grandfather was Samuel Newman. He was born 11 Apr 1763 in Willenhall, Staffordshire, England. His son Joseph, born 20 May 1809 (my ggg grandfather) married Elizabeth Hughes in 1834. Joseph and his family emigrated to the US in the 1850s and I have quite a bit of information about them after that, but I don't have anything at all about the people who come before Samuel or any of Samuel's other children if he had any.
Is anyone out there working on this line?
Thanks
