I am trying to find anyone who may know anything about these people.

Philip J Hipkiss (Born 1952, Died 1994?)

Patricia Ann(e) Hipkiss (Nee, Kirkland)

Maureen A Hipkiss (Nee, Poulton)

In particular I am trying to trace my paternal father (PJ Hipkiss) or any of his family. According to searches he may have died in 1994.

He lived in and around Bilston and Wolverhampton for most of his life. His second marriage looks to have been registered in Wrekin, so he may have moved over that way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Andy

Hi Chris,

Not sure if you are looking for further information. This is a follow up to the message that Christine put on.

Jane Large married James Brockhurst but he was born at Keele not Brewood. He was one of 3 sons, Charles and John being the other two.

Jane and James had five children all born in Brewood - Elizabeth (born 1868), James (1870), Jane (1872), George (1875) and Annie (1878).

James's father was William Brockhurst and his mother was Jane Smith.

Charles married and had three children (as far as I have been able to find out) - James (Brewood 1851), Ann (1852 Wolverhampton) and Jonah (1867 Bloxwich).

John married Sarah Wright and had three children - Ruth Elizabeth (1858 - Brewood), Edward (1859) and Ann Eliza (1861 - married James Bethell).

Edward married Selina Mullard and had seven children: William (Brinsford 1885), Edward (Coven 1888), John (Coven 1890), Lily Selina (Coven 1891), Samuel George (Bushbury 1893), Albert Edward (Bushbury 1894) and Frederick J (born Bushbury 1896 - killed in action Ypres July 1917 - memorial on Menin Gate). Selina remarried after Edward's death (John Shotton).

Hope this information helps.

Wendy

Ann is the daughter of Samuel Clempson and Sarah Simmons, m. abt 1851.
I can go back another generation or so.
Can anyone shed any more light on this family.
All that I can find so far is in the Warwickshire, Staffordshire etc area.
Thank you
KARON

Thank you Chris,

You have put a lot of hard work into this, I have copied this to word and I will see what I can work out.

If Joseph was the son baptised in 1815 he was about 9 which is not unheard of. I am still trying to find a likely candidate for his father which I think is Joseph born in about 1760 not in Staffordshire. I have a few candidates, shame either Miner don't have wills or Joseph who died in 1847 could have a least lasted until 1851 age 91 when I might have worked out where he was born.

Again thank you very much for all your help

Kind regards

Debs

Up Gornal
14/7/1819 John s of John and Lydia Clarke, Lower Gornal
14/7/1819 Mary d of John and Lydia Clarke, Lower Gornal
11/1/1818 Charity d of William and Charity Clarke. L Gornal
8/2/1818 Esther d of Joseph and Sarah Clarke, Coseley
10/5/1818 Benjamin s of Issac and Mary Clarke, Coseley
18/7/1818 Mary Hickman d of Joseph and Rebecca Clarke, UG
18/7/1818 Edwin Samuel s of Joseph and Rececca Clarke, UG
27/9/1818 Elizabeth d of William and Elizabeth Clarke, Ettingshall.
11/10/1818 Hannah d of Jonah and Mary Clarke, Ettingshall
21/3/1819 Mary Ann d of John and Lydia Clarke, Lower Gornal.

I check the All Saints marriage register between 1830 and 1835 and found 4 Clarkes, not of whom was Joseph.
Emmanuel Clarke and Sarah Holly Marr. 14/4/1833
Francis Clark and Sarah Rupert Marr 24/8/1833
John Clarke and Sarah Haynes Marr 1/6/1834
Henry Clarke and Sarah Parker Marr 18/8/1835

I did not see any Down Downs or Downes.

I checked through the Upper Gornal and Lower Gornal church records, but did not find anything.

I also checked the Sedgley Roman Catholic registers, but to no avail.

Next best bet was Dudley Churches.
So I tried St. Thomas, Dudley, Worcestershire 1830 - 1835 and found:
Marriage: Joseph Clark of this Parish, Bachelor and Sarah Downs of this Parish, Spinster were married by Banns on 28th April 1834.
Both put an X mark (Indicating they could not write).
The Witnesses were Thomas Allen (he was on all records, so presumably a church clerk etc. ) and the other witness was Joseph Downes.

I then checked St. Thomas Baptisms from 1806 to December 1812 and did not find any Downes at all. There wer a few Clarkes, but no Joseph Clarke.
There were also no Downes in the Index to Baptisms 1813 to 1816 - so they would appear not to be attending this church then.

Eventually found:
Joseph s of Joseph and Hannah Clarke Baptised 11th June 1815. Dudley. Miner.

No Downs found in St. Thomas Baptisms 1813 - 1816.
The only Downs I found was Ann d of Jonas and Elizabeth Downs, Miner, Dudley. Bap 18/7/1819.

So it looks like we have Josephs Marriage to Sarah, and Josephs Baptism. But the Downes are proving very difficult to find. It is not a very common name in this area, so unless you have any more clues for them, I am not sure where to go next.

Hope this lot helps you, but would be please to try again if you need more help for the Sedgley/Dudley areas.

Regards
Chris

Hello,

I'm trying to determine if the Ethel Anne Baker who married Douglas MacKillop is the same as my cousin, Ethel Annie Baker.

My cousin Ethel Annie Baker was born c.1896, Cannock, Staffordshire (Source: 1901 Census), daughter of James Philip Baker and Isabel Sheldon.

I have now found that StaffordshireBMD.org.uk have a record for an Ethel A. Baker marrying a Douglas MacKillop in 1918 in St. Luke's Church, Cannock (REF: C1CL/9/184).

Further, the 1961 "Who was who: a companion to Who's who" (Google Book Search, http://tinyurl.com/yda8uou) mentions Douglas MacKillop, (born 12 May 1891, son of James MacKillop of Greenlaw, Berwickshire), as marrying an Ethel Anne Baker in 1919. She is also stated to have died in 1931.

An Ethel A. Mackillop, aged 35, died in Reigate in 1932, according to FreeBMD.org.uk; the date of death corresponds with the known date of birth for my cousin Ethel Annie Baker.

Can anyone confirm if these Ethels are in fact the same person?

Thank you for any assistance you might be able to provide,
Craig Sheldon

His father was Benjamin Barrett and her father was Thomas summerfield. My grandmother was Lillian Barrett whom married a man and became Lillian Masters. She had a sister, Eida, who lived in Cannock for most of her life. All the named males were miners. Can anyone help me trace this back further? I would like to know of/hear from any descendants of the above.

A.Miller

Hi There

Can anyone help me, I am looking for a couple of birth records and a marriage from Sedgley. Although quite well represented on the IGI there appears to be some gaps as I have noticed there are some member contributions for the years when they should be IGI entries, the people I am looking for seem to fall through the gaps. If anyone has access or knows of the following families please could you help me, these are my Uncle Joe Yeardleys many grandparents:

1. Marriage of Joseph Clark(e) to a Sarah possible Downes around 1830-1835 time (son Isaac born in 1834 Sedgley)

2. Birth of Joseph Clark (e) about 1814 (according to census - very stable age throughout years)

3. Birth of a Joseph Downes, John Downes and Sarah Downes about 1800 - 1816 ish. Joseph Downes and John Downes c) 1806 ish mark and Sarah possibly towards the 1814 mark.

Any help appreciated or even where I could purchase records.

There is a marriage for a James F Whiting and an Emily Peers in 1913 in Stoke on Trent so these may be his parents. I believe James and Annie were married in 1944 in Greater London.

Hi,

I have just started researching my fathers side of my family and already I am drawing a blank. I don't know anything about the family other than my grandfather is James Frederick Whiting (born 1923) and he married Annie Pearce. That is it. I have been struggling to find any records for their marriage deaths, or his military records.

Any suggestions?

My mother and father lived on Shearer Street in Shelton in the early 1970's. There was a Toft family who's back gate was opposite ours. I was born there in 1974 and my younger brother in 1976. My mum can't remember the names of the parents but the children were: John, Alan, Sandra, Irene and the youngest was Nigel. My mother actually named my youngest brother Nigel after him. Nigel Toft used to come over to play with me as a baby. One of the son's went into the Armed Forces (Navy?) and one of the sons also made my mum a bookcase that we took to Norfolk with us when we moved down there.

My mum bumped into Mrs Toft years later in Hanley market, at the time she had had an accident with her knee and she was walking with a stick, unfortunately we haven't seen her since.

I don't know if any of this is relevant to you but if it is I hope it helps.

Thank you so much for that. I don't have nay contact with my birth father and so don't know anything about his side of the family, and this has given me another place to look from. Again, thank you.

That would be so very kind of you, I have had no other offers to-date.

I have just received in the post the marriage certificates just confirming that the Downes and Clarkes I asked about are the right lines (been working off the census and index before), shame they didn't bring the GRO registrations in until 1837 would have made life easier!

I live in the Outer Hebrides so not sure I can return the favour, though I have got a lot of information on Jewish research and if that fails there is always some Stornoway Chocolate or Smoked Salmon.

Again thank you for the kind offer

Regards

Debs

The registration district 6b is for Staffordshire not Greater London so the record I read had a mistake. The marriage may have been in Stoke on Trent. Sorry for the confusion.

I know that you posted this query a long time ago but Joseph Edward Peakman and Alice were my great grandparents. They had several sons the first John (known) as Jack and then Joseph Edward (my grandfather) then Hector who died aged 2. There was another brother known as William but I have no information on him. I have more information which may be relevant.

Rose
