Hi, have stumbled accross the message board for Henry Backhouse Smith. I am Leo Backhouse Smith's son. Henry was my fathers grandfather. We own the property 'BENAU' and look after the graves and family plot at Savusavu. Would love any further information of soft copies of family trees etc that you have managed to gather. Leo has a hard copy that was done by Uncle Richard and his wife and passed onto us before his passing.

Any information that you have that could suppliment the hard copy I have would be appreciated.

Hi there, thanks for your response. I have uncle Richards hard copy and have also managed to dig a bit deeper into Henry B Smith's family in UK before he left. I have created a list of Henry's brothers and sisters as well as parents from information gathered so far from UK census and parish records. I will dig it out and forward to you. I basically answers the question of where the Backhouse name comes from....his father was William Henry Smith and his mother Mary Catharine Backhouse. They had 4 children: Ellen Fanny Haselwood Smith, Richard Corsair Backhouse Smith, Henry backhouse Smith and Sidney Smith.

William Henry Smith married Mary Catherine Backhouse in 1837 in Morville, Shropshire. She was the daughter of Richard and Mary Backhouse and she was christened in 1811. She and her siblings were all christened in Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire. Her siblings were:
Richard Onians Backhouse 1815
Henry Onians Backhouse 1816
Fanny Backhouse 1819
Possibly Ann Backhouse in 1808 but not confirmed.

Mary and William had 4 children including Henry Backhouse but also Richard Backhouse CORSER Smith who married Louisa Valentine ?. Both are buried in Old Ealing Cemetary. He died aged 60 in 1902 and she died in 1915 but unable to confirm age from headstone. The CORSER name comes from a couple Backhouse marriages in Morville where an Ann Backhouse marries Thomas CORSER in 1797 and Mary Backhouse marries William CORSER in 1801. Assume these are Mary's relations but don't know which kind.
Have not found anything further on William Henry Smith as yet or Mary's grandparents.

The Haselwood family were also from Morville hence the Haselwood name for Ellen Fanny Haselwood Smith
