Henry was born in 1841 in Birmingham, England and buried on a hilltop in Fiji. Large progeny.
Ring any bells?
Regards,
Rob

Hi Rob, I married into the Backhouse-Smith family in 1993. My father-in-law is the grandson of the Henry Backhouse-Smith that you are querying. I don't personally have alot of info but can find it out if required.

Cheers, Michelle.

Glad to hear from you Michelle.
I couldn't find any records from Birminham for Henry or his kith and kin.
My daughter-in-law's parents have gone back to the family homestead (10 miles along the coast from Savu Savu) to live.We flew our two grand daughters over last month to visit and found a small cemetery on the property. The Smith men all bore the second name of Backhouse pronounced 'Backus'.
Her mother Helen has Englisn and Fijian blood, and whilst living in Melbourne kept the Fijian 'cousins' together with feast days.
Any details of Henry and his family that you can find will be gratefully received.
I'm interested to find out where you fit in.
Reagrds, Rob..

Hi Rob,

thankyou for your reply. I have this copy of this is it is one in the same compilation in book form completed by Richard Backhouse Smith Jnr and divided into the four families - Miller, Backhouse, Bathe and Ratu Tevita Salabuca.

I obtained this from Great Aunty Helen's Brother in Suva - Leo BH Smith (Consort Shippings) I think Great Aunty Helen is married to Uncle Alec Jones and they are based in Melbourne for half the year and the other half up in Benau.

If this is an amended version or updated - I would be interested if you did forward this through. I have been updating this for awhile and fixing mistakes up. So if you like we could swap.

I do have pictures of the grave too as I went up last year and attended Uncle Richards funeral in July.

Anyway if you could please forward it through both email addresses - I would appreciate it.

Kind Regards
Tania

Hi Rob,

from my previous reply, may I correct your email - Great Aunty Helen (your daughter in laws mother) is in fact a grand-daughter of old man Henry BH Smith Snr. Great Aunty Helen's father was in fact Richard Backhouse Smith Snr (who was the son of Henry Backhouse Smith)
It is my great grandfather Harry (Henry) BH Smith who is a brother to Richard BH Smith Snr.

Look forward to hearing from you

Regards
Tania

Hello Tania,
I know, I know. I'm embarrassed to have made an oldtimer's mistake.
I have all the info you have, but I received a PAF disc from Helen's Sydney sister. Name escapes me.
It took a while to dawn on me that we have met. I'm Evan's father. I was sitting beside Adara when you entered the room and said, 'I can see the family resemblance.' looking from Evan to Adara to me. Flattering for an aging, heavier, balder Pa.
Keep in touch.

Hi Rob,

That's okay, I would absolutely love a copy of the PAF disc format of the family tree that you have. I have this only in the hard copy. A copy of the soft copy would be brillant.

I will email you at the bottom email address now.

Many Thanks for the acknowledgement.

Kind Regards
Tania
