Wilkinson/Stanborough in Whitehaven, UK

I'm looking for anyone who knows anything about my Grandmother or her parents. My Grandmother was called Nora Wilkinson and lived from 01.06.28. - 1962. Her parents were Jane (nee Stanborough) and William Wilkinson who I think died in an explosion at the Haig Pit in Whitehaven in 1931, aged 24. Jane went on to remarry and have more children. This is virtually all I know, so any information would be great.
Many thanks.

I just found a book, printed 1885, that states: Thomas Gilpin, of Mill Hill, (son of Bernard and Dorothy Ayrey), of the parish of Eaton, near the town of Lancaster, or of a parish of that name in Westmoreland, near Lancashire.

Bernard Gilpin, eldest son and heir of Martin, married Dorothy Ayrey, and is said to have had eleven children; of them we have the names of the following: 1. William, eldest son and heir. 2. Martin. 3. Francis. 4. Samuel. 5. Arthur. 6. Randolph. 7. Allen. 8. Thomas.

As you can see there is no date or place information for birth or death, except for a place called Mill Hill.

Thomas is my 9th Great-grandfather and Bernard my 10th. Can someone help me find where Mill Hill is or was and add any date or marrriage information?

Thanks, Dan

William Braithwaite from Kendal

My 5xgt grandfather,William Braitwaite was apparently born in Kendal circa 1773-1776 but in 1807 he wed a Sarah Bate in Middlewich,Cheshire. Sarah was from Worcestershire

I have found him in the various census 1841 onwards but wonder if there are any Kendal parish registers on line or CD where I might get some further clues as to his parents or background.

Two of his children were given the name Barnet as a second name so possibly this is another clue?

He was also quite a wealthy man as he is down as a Proprietor of houses in the 1841 census. I wonder did he make his money in Kendal or Middlewich. Does anyone of any connection between Kendal and Middlewich?

In Kendal parish marriage records I have John Barrow "BTP" and Mary Noble "B", married 30 Mar 1815. At first I thought the initials referred to their home parish, but can't find a parish name to match. The FHL microfilm #973139 does not provide a key. Would anyone know what the initials stand for? Maybe it's not a village, but "Baptized this parish"? Thank you for any help.

> Just wondering if there is anyone out there who could help me trace either
> of these two. They are my great great grandparents - in 1841 in Haverbrack
> Westmorland. In 1851 Isabella (nee Jackson) is still there, still down as
> married, but no sign of Thomas. I can find no trace of a marriage between
> them, so assume they didn't marry, but did have several children between
> them. The only thing I definitely know about Thomas is that he WASN'T born
> in Westmorland. Although he did live there at one time. I can find no trace of a death for him. There is a Thomas
> Mark who went to Australia in the 1850s gold rush, he seems to have married
> in Liverpool in 1858, and then named his children the same names as "my"
> Thomas named his. But I have no way of proving if they are one and the same
> man, or not. Anyone out there able to help??
> Thanks very much!
Could anyone possibly look up the 1841 and 1851 census for Westmorland England please.
I am looking for a John Brownrigg aged 2yrs on 1841 and his Mother Margaret Brownrigg.John was born 1839 in Morland West morland England,he has no father listed on his birth certificate, but the birth was registered by a Thomas Brownrigg
and where the adress should be listed it just had Thomas Brownrigg as YEOMAN Occupier, does anyone know what a Yeoman occupier would have been.I am also looking for a Thomas Dent Fothergill in either the Westmorland or Cumbria area, around the same time, the reason being is Thomas Dent Fothergill shows up on John Brownriggs Marriage certificate as Johns father,so whether John found out that Fothergill was his father later on or whether Fothergill may have been his step father I don`t know, but any help with these look ups would be much apreciated,I am in Liverpool so don`t have any access to Westmorland or cumbria census.I do know that by 1881 John Brownrigg was in Liverpool. If anyone needs help from the 1881 census I will gladly look it up for you.please email me.
kerry@kspelman.freeserve.co.uk

Need look-up in Ravenstonedale records

Thanks in advance for any help.

Rachel Stubbs died after 1780 (I have records through that year). I'm wondering if it was 1819, but that might be a wild goose chase. Wife of William. Probably Ravenstonedale, but possibly Kendal. I'm VERY interested in her birth date and parentage, too, so am hoping that death cert might have that info.

Also, William Stubbs (son of William & above-mentioned Rachel Armstrong Stubbs) was married between 1780 and 1798. Probably in Ravenstonedale. I'd love to know his wife's name and their marriage date (and anything else in the register, of course).

Again, thanks for your time, if you're going to look through the Ravenstonedale records anyway. I have a CD with all parish records from 1571-1780. If I can help you in return, I'd be more than glad to look something up.

Janis
Ohio, USA

Need Help reading a Westmorland town name (1851 census) Labrow family name
I am trying to find out any info on Thomas Labrow born around 1790 in Westmorland. He and his wife Ann are listed in the 1851 census. His wifes name might be Ann Scott. I believe they might be the parents of Thomas Scott Labrow born in 1814 in Susgill, Westmorland.

I can't make out the town that he was born in on the census. Is it Londonthorpe, Westmorland??? I would like to see the parish records for that town to find out who his parents were. Below is the census record.

Any help would be great!!!!

Mike

Lund/Hunter - Sedgwick/Heversham/Barrow/Ulverston/Tebay/Orton/Utah,USA

Looking for any information on the descendants of Robert Lund (b.1777 Lodge Park, Clapham) who married Mary Wilson (b.1779 Heversham) 1804 at Helsington. They appear to have lived at Helsington and had 11 Lund children (Mary, Elizabeth aka Betsy/Betty, Richard, James, Agnes, John, Wilson, Fannie, Ann, Ellen & Robert). I am particularly interested in those that stayed in the Heversham, Sedgewick and Beathwaite Green areas, also Barrow, Ulverston, Tebay & Orton areas. Also am interested in finding out about Wilson Lund (b.1815 Bethnel Green), and his sister Ann Lund (b.1817 Heversham) who married Isaac Hunter in the parish of Heversham in 1840. Both emigrated to Utah, USA and converted to the Mormon faith. Their considerable numbers of children were born c.1840 onwards. Also, I have reason to believe that Fannie and probably Ellen went out to America too but have no proof of this as yet. Any info. on the Lund families or Ann Hunter (nee Lund) & Isaac Hunter would be welcome. I would also be happy to share what info. I have on these families. I can be contacted directly on my email address: joanne@penton.net.

Hello

I have a few possible links for this gentleman but as yet have not found him!!

Originally I thought he was Scottish as he was reputed to have been in the Gordon Highlanders. I was given info of a soldier of this name at the thepvel memorial but this link has not been confirmed as he apparently was from Lerwick on the shetland Isles. Cannot find him..... This link was strong as both father & son were John. Gordon Highlanders... BUT wrong profession for father!!! Could have changed i suppose, but cannot find anything to confirm this link.

Anyway there were Anderson's living in Kendal in 1901. So I am going to try this route....hopefully I find a link closer to home!!

Thomas Anderson - plasterer or banker ( 2 entries for same address!! ) West View.

There was also a John Anderson I think but he was married and had a son aged 3 in 1901. SO NOT HIM....

There also a mention of a John anderson in Barrow/Ulverston area - but cannot find that info....

There is a possibility of a link in Cumberland = Wigton, Carlisle or Cleator Moor.

Somewhere there must be info on this gentleman BUT as yet - he is eluding discovery.

All I know for definite is...

He was born 1883 ( give or take dependant on month ) as he as 23 in December 1905.

He came to Kendal to work on the Library as a Stone Mason - at this time his father was also a Stone mason.

He married Margaret Bainbridge Halliwell in Kendal 24/12/1905.

He had 2 Children Thomas Leslie & Stella.

Anything to help find this illusive gentleman would be great as I have been trying everything for over 2 years....

Thanks in Anticipation.

Trying to solve a mystery re Richard CHAPMAN born Nov.1852 Meal Bank, Kendal to single mother, Alice. I think his mum may have married Richard THOMPSON and brought him up as a THOMPSON, but can't prove it. He married under the name of Richard CHAPMAN. Richard snr was born ca.1832 in Kendal, Alice ca.1820 in ?Swaledale. Any details of CHAPMANs or THOMPSONs in Kendal in 1851 might help, or of course a marriage entry.

I really have very little information. I am looking for kin of John Wharton of Sunbiggen - parish of Orten, County of Westmorland. There was a James Wharton as well. I have his name on an indenture from 1844-45. It is a very interesting document and I thought I would try to tie family to it. It seems John and James are quite popular names though.

If it says someone is of a place does that mean it is where they lived or does it refer to a birthplace?

Kara Smarz

The furthest back I've got is Daniel Ellwood, born in Kendal in 1730, married to Hannah Crewdson in 1758.

If anyone looking at Ellwoods has any knowledge of the family name "Hassall" I would be electrically interested: my family is riddled with that name.
Nathan Dickinson (Dickenson) Hodgson Stavely

In Australia Nathan Dickinson or Dickenson Hodgson name stands out like a sore thumb. The person can be easily spotted however trying to trace the family backwards has proven quite difficult and I would be grateful for any information that anyone has. I have included his descendant list and details of his 1st marriage as I would love to gain more information on Emma as she is the one that my line comes through. Thank you

PS It would be terrific if anyone can solve the riddle of the Dickinson middle name for me. Researching Westmorland there were so many people of both sexes who had it as a middle name it became quite confusing.

1. Nathan Dickenson Hodgson was born in 1862 in Stavely Westmorland and died in Jul. 1954 in Townsville, Qld. He married 1st Emma in 1880 in Skilsinugh Westmorland. He married 2nd Isabella Jackson in 1885 in Qld.
Other events in the relationship of Nathan Dickenson Hodgson and Emma
Separation

Children of Nathan Dickenson Hodgson and Emma
i. 2. Nathan Walter Hodgson was born on Jul. 8, 1883 in Skilsinugh, Westmorland, England and died on
Jul. 24, 1954 in Townsville, Qld.
Children of Nathan Dickenson Hodgson and Isabella Jackson
ii. 3. Florence Hodgson was born on Sep. 12, 1888 in Mount Morgan and died on Nov. 18, 1946 in
Townsville, Qld.
iii. 4. Nathan Hodgson was born in 1893 and died on an unknown date.
iv. 5. Isabella Hodgson Hodgson was born in 1896 and died in 1896 in Qld.

Dobson from Kirby Lonsdale

I have in my house (Punta Arenas Chile) a silver cup, the first prize for some cattle fair in Kendal. It is very old (for my standards) with this inscription:

"The Kendall agricultural society to Mr. John Dobson of Bigging Hall in the township of Kirkby Lonsdale for the best horned bull of two years old and upwards. May 8, 1813".

I searched the web and I found John Dobson, farmer of Bigging Hall in this web site:

http://edenlinks.rootsweb.com/1gp/LONSDALEWARD/KLONS/KLONS_D...

However I could not finf any more information about him.

David and Agnes Ann Dobson emigrated from England to Chile in 1895 (details in http://ona.fi.umag.cl/~rcd/dobson). The grandfather of David, Richard, married in Kirby lonsdale. However I have not find any connection between him and John Dobson from bigging hall.

Anybody can help me with John Dobson from bigging hall?. I am looking for the name of his wife, children etc, anything.

Roberto.

I am trying to find the parish record for Robert Armitstead and Ellin Housman/Houseman. They were both living in Arkholme, Lancashire in 1749 when they married. I had another reference (not official) that said they were married in Clapham, but the only official info I can find is this:

Lancashire, Westmoreland: - Marriage Bonds, Deaneries of Lonsdale Kendal Furness and Copeland and Amounderness (Archdeaconry of Richmond), 1746-1755
Lancaster Marriage Bonds
Lancaster Marriage Bonds
L
County: Lancashire
Country: England
Armitstead, Robert, 23, schoolmaster & Ellen Housman, 21, both Arkholme 17 May 1749

I would like to find the actual parish record to see if more information is listed, i.e. actual marriage place, witnesses, parent's names etc.

Any help that would point me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Lisa

I am looking for any information about Margaret Robinson, mother of Elizabeth Robinson. She gave birth to Elizabeth in the Milnthorpe workhouse on 1 Feb 1869 and gave her up for adoption. I do not know the father of Elizabeth (it is not on the birth cert) and I do not know any more info about Margaret. She was probably born in Westmorland in about the late 1840's or early 50's. There are 2 Margaret Robinson's listed on the census for the workhouse in 1881 but I don't know if either of these women are her as she was not on the 1871 census there.
Any info would be appreciated.

Sarah had a child out of wedlock when she was about 17 and called her son Isaac and he was chrostened in Cartmel Fell in 1800. I have no idea what happened to Sarah - did she keep her son (have a feeling she did) and did she marry and start anoher family. Isaac is on he 1841 census living in Low Wood Upper Holker and is a gunpowder maker - he lives with his wife and family - what happened to his mother - any ideas how I can find her please? Many thanks - Pat

William Sleddall of Kendal

I am tracing my Sleddall family of Kendal. Particularly, I am looking for the families of the children of William Sleddall and Elizabeth Holme who married abt. 1798 in New Hutton. They had five children: Elizabeth b. abt. 1799, Mary b. abt. 1802, John b. abt. 1803, William b. abt. 1805, and then my gr-gr-gr grandfather, Thomas b. abt. 1813. Thomas married Mary Sewell and died a young man in Carlisle, Co. Cumberland on 6 Oct. 1843. Thomas had two daughters, Mary Theresa and Elizabeth. His brothers John and William did not produce any heirs so the Sleddall name ended with this generation for me. I have been trying to find what happened to the sisters Mary and Elizabeth, but both ladies married men with common surnames so a meaningful search is difficult. Elizabeth married George Lockwood on 1 June 1825 in Kendal, but I have no other information. Mary married George Wright on 8 Oct. 1831 in New Hutton, and they had three sons, George Sleddall Wright, John Hall Wright, and William Sterling Wright. I know the names of these children because they were mentioned in the obituary of John Sleddall who was the last of the five Sleddall children to pass away on 18 April 1887 in Ulverston. I was hoping someone has more information on the two Sleddall sisters, Elizabeth and Mary, or if anyone would kindly find them on the 1841 Census. I have tried searching the 1861 Census with no luck at all using the 1837Online web site. When I visited Kendal several years ago, I had the opportunity to locate the obituary of John Sleddall, benefactor the the Sleddall Alms Houses in Kendal. If anyone is local, I would certainly love to know whether or not an obituary exists for the brother William Sleddall who died 24 Oct .1870 (and buried in the St. Stephen's Church cemetery). Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Lisa Hopp
Seattle, WA

I have his name on an indenture from 1844-45. It is a very interesting document and I thought I would try to tie family to it. It seems John and James are quite popular names though.

If it says someone is of a place does that mean it is where they lived or does it refer to a birthplace?

Kara Smarz

Trying to find any details of Daniel Pearson or his parents. Daniel was baptised 6 Oct 1833, mother was Ellen or Eleanor Pearson. Father may have been George (a smith). In 1841 Daniel is in Kendal Workouse with several other Pearsons but by 1861 he is married and living in Preston with his brother Thomas Dixon - maybe his mother remarried ? Daniel may have also had a sister Mary baptised 10 April 1831 also in workhouse in 1841.
Any help greatly appreciated.
regards
David Pearson

Hi Westsmith
Thanks for writing. James and Hannah certainly did have a son Daniel everything you have said fits apart from Daniels wife: maiden name 'Layland' not 100% about that but she was called Ann and one of their sons Joseph 'was' born Kendal 1826 I am pretty sure he imigrated to USA? To my knowledge he had 6 siblings all born Skipton so I would be keen to hear from you again
Very Best Wishes
Joan
Looking for any connection with relatives of John Davis or Edith Martin. Married in Kirkdale in 1930. We think John (Father) was a farm labourer. Three sons - John Henry and Brian born 1935 (possibly twins) and Michael in 1938. All three went to orphanage around 1941 - possibly Staveley and then all seperated. Have a death record for an Edith Davis/Martin for 1941 so possibly why they had to go to orphanage. Any info on orphanage or family appreciated.

Hi, I am researching my family tree through my paternal grandmother Ada Clifford. I have got as far back as Richard Proctor Clifford born c 1789 in Appleby, Westmorland. I know very little about him other than he married Jane Elliot and the banns for their wedding were published on the 12th, 19th and 26th April 1812 in Brampton Church. I can't find any record of the marriage taking place there. Richard and Jane only had one son, Joseph. I would love to find out more about him and any members of the family going back beyond richard.

HUTCHINSON ... Kendal or Windomore/Windermere? Westmorland

Hello, My husband has an ancestor James HUTCHINSON (born c. 1790) who appears to hail from either Kendal Westmorland (1851 Glamorgan Census) or Windomore/Windermere Westmorland (1861) Glamorgan census. By 1829 he is in Glamorgan and his first wife, Martha, has died. He does have a daughter Jane born c. 1837 (we only know not in Glamorgan). At the same time, we find a George Hutchinson (born c. 1797) and a Robert Hutchinson (born c. 1795) also in Glamorgan coming from Stavely Westmorland ... don't know if they are related or not ... haven't got the geography of Westmorland down yet.

So, if you have come across the HUTCHINSON family or are doing research in these locales and have any suggestions, I'd love to communicate. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

GIBSON BLACKSMITHS: MELLING/ARKHOLME/BURTON-IN-KENDAL

Hi all,
I am trying to trace the father of Allen GIBSON of Melling (1802-1878). His father may have been Leonard GIBSON b. 1759 d. 1840. His mother may have been Elizabeth b. 1770 d 1815. Allen may also have had a brother called Robert b. 1801 d. 1840.
Perhaps someone can confirm/disconfirm this? All the men were, i think Blacksmiths in Melling
Any suggestions as to how to find out would be appreciated. My home e-mail is: radio112@hotmail.com
Thank you, Christopher J.F. GIBSON (Glasgow)

Thomas Wharton and Family from Warcop

Hi

Further to a posting I did a few years ago I am still looking to trace the family of Thomas Wharton b.C1806 Warcop. His birth date and place of birth is consistent throughout 4 census, although he does add the place of birth as Buttergill, Warcop. Does this meen anything to anyone?

I have Thomas as being chris: 31 Aug 1806 Warcop the son of William Wharton and Elizabeth Hunter who were married 3 Jul 1806!!!! Warcop.

Can anyone out there help me track down Thomas's parents and any siblings. I believe he had at least 1 brother John who was born 1810 Great Musgrave and possibly a sister Elizabeth b. C1819 (but not sure about her at the moment).

Is anyone tracing this family or could anyone help me with any information at all. Has anyone access to the Warcop parish records, etc....

The next generation, Thomas's family mentioned in the previous posting, are proven through census and the fortunate point that another member of the family had a bible with birth dates, weddings, etc.... from Thomas's children and his son James' family on (If only all branches could be proven as easy).

Any help however small would be greatfully recieved.

Kindest Regards
Brian

William Hewitt Hird b. c1830

Hi all,
Am seeking any info about my ancestor, William Hewitt Hird. He was married on 20.2.1856 to Ann Cockin (b 1832?) at Luddington, Lincolnshire (taken from front page of family bible). He died in Victoria, Australia in 1912. His parents were Thomas and Mary (nee Hewitt). Ann died 1911, Victoria, Australia and her parents were Jitian and Jane Cockin (nee Popplewell). In June 1872, Ann age 40 and 5 children (Thomas b11.1.1857,William Jonathan b13.5.1858, John Popplewell b20.3.1860, Mary b10.4.1861, Annie b24.1.1863) arrived on 'Queen of Nations' in Victoria. I think William came out earlier but still hunting.
Do these names mean anything to you?
Any info of the family prior to 1872 would be appreciated.
Regards Michelle Hird

I have family that live in the Lunesdale area at Botton Mill apart from a a tor known as Botton Head there is no village of this name. Yet many census entries have people putting there birth place as Botton.
When I was at the record office I looked it up in the 1841 census books and found it was called Bolton. Can anyone confirm that there was a name change or indeed what Bolton it could refer too as my latest ancestor (abt 1790) put this as his birthplace yet I can't see it as refering to the industril town.

The origin of a Thompson family in Sockbridge?

Hello All

I'd like to hear from Thompson families from around Penrith and Ullswater in Westmorland (England).

I have been reading a 1910 article by Reverend F. W. Ragg called De Lancaster, which was originally published in the Transactions of the CUMBERLAND & WESTMORLAND ANTIQUARIAN & ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY. I have found a fascinating passage which gives us a hypothesis we can test.

In 1430 a Lancaster charter mentions William Lancaster of Sockbridge, son of Thomas Gibonson.

In 1449 a Lowther charter mentions, in a similar role, William Lancaster, otherwise called William Thompson of Sokbrede.

The man involved seems to have been trustworthy. He is used as an interim grantee along with two different clerics.

This was a period were people were apparently playing around with patronymic (father-based) family names in order to identify themselves, and this clearly seems to be such a case, perhaps because there was another "mainline" William Lancaster of Sockbridge.

The patriarchs of the Lancasters of Sockbridge were often named Gilbert, and presumably a son of a Gilbert might choose to call himself Gibson or Gibonson etc. So we have a family tree:

1. Gilbert Lancaster (probably the one who lived about 1357-1371)
2. Thomas who perhaps used the name Gibonson
3. William who used the name Thompson

PLEASE NOTE. I realize that Thompson is a common name which probably has hundreds of independent origins. What I am wondering is if we can prove we have found one.

You don't often get a chance to find a medieval paper trail, but in this particular parish the Lancasters were reasonably important and so some medieval documents survive. Also DNA can help...

The Lancaster DNA project has a fairly good idea what the male-line DNA signature of the Sockbridge Lancasters looks like. So we can test Reverend Ragg's hypothesis!

There is a Thompson surname DNA project here: http://www.thompsonfamilies.org/

Best Regards
Andrew Lancaster
coordinator of Lancaster surname DNA project
