Surnames: ANDREWS, HEWITT
I am looking for information on Stephen ANDREWS and Elizabeth HEWITT from Bishopstone, Wiltshire England in early 1800s.

LDS Familisearch has 2 IGI records for christening of Stephen ANDREWS in Bishopstone
1. Christened 1798 Paters Peter ANDREWS and Susannah.
2. Christened 1802 Mother Eliza ANDREWS

IGI listing for BETTY HEWETT 1808 (Parents Edwd HEWETT and Betty).

Stephen were married in Bishopstone in 1829. They migrated to Australia in 1841, when Stephen was 38. His parents were listed on imigration records as Thos (possibly Thomas??) and Elizabeth DAWKINS. Elizabeth ANDREWS parents were listed as Edward HE... and Elizabeth FOLKES.

From this limited info it looks like the Stephen christened in 1802 might be the one I am looking for.

I have just finished transcribing the Bishopstone Parish Records so have the details you need.

The surname was spelt in many different ways but in later years they seem to have settled on HEWET or HEWETT
Stephen Andrews was baptised 3rd April 1798 son of Peter and Susanna
The other Stephen Andrews was baptised 17.10.1802 son of Eliza

Betty HEWET was baptised 8th May 1808 daughter of Edward & Betty

Stephen and Betty were married 15.11.1829
Witnesses at the wedding were: James Dawkins and Mary Ann Chinn
--------------
On 8th January 1807 Elizabeth Andrews married Thomas Dawkins at Bishopstone
Witness: Robert Noyes.
( from 1803 - 1810 Robert Noyes witnessed all the marriages in the village, so was presumably one of the Church Wardens- this was frequently the case in the village)

Therefore Stephen was the son of Eliza Andrews.Thomas was his step father.

Edward Hewitt married Betty PHILIPS on 7th May 1796
Witnesses: John Young & Jemima Cox

Betty (Elizabeth) PHILIPS was baptised 1st December 1776 Illegitimate daughter of Jane

There are other PHILIPS families in the Parish Records at that time, but no Folkes. It’s possible that Stephen and Betty were illiterate. Maybe the person recording their details mis- heard them. If they couldn’t read they wouldn’t have known what had been written down. I've checked the records up 'til 1850 and there is no re-marriage for Edward to a Folkes. Of course he may have re-married in another village.
If you would like me to look for other family members contact me direct. so that we don't clog up the mailing list

Hello Dot,

I'd love to get a copy of the transcribed registers for Bishopstone as my family is from there and the name is often spelled incorrectly -- INDGE. Will one of the family history societies be selling it?

Thank you.

Marilyn

Hello Marylin

The data will be available free on the Wilts OPC website eventually, but in the meantime, if you let me know what you need I can send you the information.

I have to say that without going through all the files, their name doesn't ring any bells. Are you sure you want Bishopstone near Salisbury and not the one in north Wilts?

Dot

HI Dot,

You're right -- it's the Bishopstone near Swindon. I keep forgetting that there's 2! Didn't realize that Wilts had an OPC site so will check that out.

Thanks for getting back to me.
