SMITH and MOLD in Fisherton Anger - HELP!!

Can anyone solve this riddle for me please???

In 1838, Henry William SMITH was born in Fisherton Street, Fisherton-Anger, Wiltshire to William Dutton SMITH - a Currier, and Betsy Mold. The birth was registered by Betsy.

I was a little confused with Betsy's different last name, so I headed to the census.... I could not find William Dutton Smith on the 1841, but I did find a Betsy Mold living in Fisherton Anger with her husband THomas - a Lawyer, and their family, including one William aged 3!!!!!

I cannot find either Betsy or William Dutton Smith in 1851, but have now found William Dutton Smith - a Currier, living with his wife - Elizabeth of Salisbury, Wiltshire, and their daughters Louisa and Fanny in Surry in 1861. If this is the correct Henry William Smith, he had emigrated to Australia in 1859- his shipping info states he was born in Salisbury but was from Middlesex....

SO!! Why does Betsy have a different name and family in 1841, and how does she end up with William in Surrey in 1861?? If this child Henry William was illigitimate, surely she would have registered it under her husbands name, not the real father?? How do I get to the bottom of this complicated riddle please??
HELP!!

FINCH family from Warminster?

I am trying to find more information on a family from Warminster with the surname Finch - John A. married Bessie Maria Randall in 1919, and their children married between 1944 and 1951: oldest daughter married a Baggs and oldest son married an Ingram in 1944, two daughters had a double wedding in 1947, marrying a Taylor and a Rose, and the youngest son married a Creed in 1951. I have a few photos from the double wedding which have quite a lot of unidentified relatives in them.

Is there anyone in Wiltshire that could help me find information on the Gingell surname? Our ancestor left England in the early 1800's as a convict and was sent to Australia where he served his sentence and then came to the United States. I would like to know what he was guilty of as well as what ship he sailed on to Australia. His name was William Gingell and his date of birth was 25 Nov 1812. I would also appreciate any information available on his progenitors. Thank you very much. Lynn Gingell

Also any other information that would help me further my research of my ancestors.

Thank You
Tom
HARPER of Ramsbury, Wiltshire - early records

I have researched the Harper family of Ramsbury, Wiltshire and I have managed to get back to 1760 for John Harper who was my gggg grandfather. One of his sons, James, born 1797, was my ggg grandfather who married a Charlotte in 1822. If there anyone else out there who are researching the same family I would be glad to exchange information.

Regards
Janet Carroll (nee Harper)

Hartmoor Potterne Devizes Wiltshire

Does “Hartmoor” cottage still exist? I have a few postcards posted to and from the cottage in the 1920’s by different members of my family and an old photograph of it. My Grandparents Robert & Susan HEARD nee COOMBER named their cottage in Essex with the same name in the 1930’s. Robert’s mother & father Walter & Jemima HEARD nee WATTS were living in Poplar, London in 1881 but she was born in Potterne Wiltshire abt. 1846 (source 1881 census) which leads me to think that maybe the connection is WATTS. Of course it doesn’t necessarily mean that the family actually lived there, maybe different members of the family were just spending their holidays there. If anybody can help with me this mystery I would be very grateful and if anyone can confirm that the cottage still exists I would love to visit it.
Hi, I was looking for information on a Maria/Marie Haynes/Haines & family. Marie was born around about 1849, I think Bishopstone (although listed sometimes as Bishopstrow). Her parents were Thomas Haynes/Haines and Belinda Cockhead. I know of only two other siblings for her - Martha baptised 1846 and Elizabeth Ann 1851.
I found an entry on the GRO Index for a Thomas Haines and Belinda Cockhead married 1845 Highworth district. I am awaiting the certificate though.
on the 1851 census Belinda is listed as being born Bishopstone around about 1826, and Thomas being born in Stratton around about 1823.
Does anyone know anything about this family? I would be most grateful as I dont have access to the parish records for Wiltshire and am struggling with finding any information on them.
marriage of Thomas TYRER (Liverpool) with Elizabeth (Ilminster) - Wiltshire census 1881

In the course of researching my father's family, I have stumbled on interesting but conflicting information and I'm hoping someone can help.

Alfred Tyrer (listed as Thomas Alfred Tyrer in the 1901 census) but Alfred Tyrer on his 1880 marriage certificate. Was born in Liverpool in 1856. His father, Thomas Tyrer, is listed as a chemist on the marriage certificate. (Alfred's trade as boot maker seems less prestigious than his father's which would tie in with the family's later poverty and a family story that Alfred temporarily abandoned his wife and family to run away to the circus.)

A Thomas Tyer (also a Liverpool born chemist) and family (inc Alfred) certainly turn up on the 1861 census in Bristol, 95 Old Market Street, but Alfred's date isn't quite right. The Bristol connection feels right though. (Alfred and his wife Rosina were living there as boarders in 1881 before moving to the east end of London). I have found a separate Thomas Tyrer (also a Liverpool born chemist) on the 1881 census in Westbury Wiltshire and am wondering if there might be a connection. This time his wife's name is given as Elizabeth (5 years his junior and born in Ilminster) which conflicts with the 1861 Bristol census, but I wondered whether there might have been a remarriage after the (posible) death of the original spouse sometime in the late sixties, early seventies.

Just a hunch. Can someone help please?
George Alford, born 1829 in Upper Lovell, son of James Coalman Alford and Elizabeth Barrett/Burnett married Sophia Unknown and they had at least 7 children: Thomas, Virtue,Clara Ellen, Frank B.,Fannie,Fred G., Rosella. All of the children were born in England, Wiltshire Co., Upton Lovell and Sherrington except the last 2 children were born in Michigan and died soon after. The family emigrated to the U.S. about 1865. They settled in Allen Twp., Hillsdale Co., Michigan. Sophia died in 1872, and George remarried to Louisa Robbie and had 3 sons: Albert Edward, William J. and Harry. Does anyone out there have info to share on these families? I have a little info on the family of James C. and Elizabeth(Barrett/Burnett) Alford but looking for ealier info if possible.
Francis COOKMAN, Bradford on Avon

Hi Angela, I cannot access any records from Bradford on Avon too, or those that I found have no records for Cookmans, by looking at the 1841 & 1851 Censuses there is no other Cookmans from that area. But I did find this

NAME MARIA /TOWNSEND
NAME FRANCIS /COOKMAN
MARRIAGE DATE 06 FEB 1831
PLACE Saint Edmunds, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England

and there are a few Cookmans around Salisbury & Britford area, and Bradford could be a misspelling of Britford, just a thought,
hope this helps
Rob Kenchington

Seeking parents of Samuel H DARKNELL born in Mere, Wiltshire (c. 1812-1890)

Hi all,

I'm a beginner at genealogy, so I'm sorry if this is a lame question.
I'm trying to track down the birth records for my great-great-grandfather, Samuel Henry Darknell, born in Mere, Wiltshire sometime between 1812 and 1824 (I've found very many different dates in census records for his birthdate).

I'm mainly trying to track down his parents, who I think may be Samuel Darknell and Rachel Case. I have excellent records for my family from Samuel H. and his children, etc. downward. But I have not a shred of evidence of who is parents in England were.

Are these records available? I'm in the United States and I cannot afford just now to travel to Wiltshire to research this. Is there somewhere I can write?

Thanks,
Sharon (Darknell) Kidder

I have an ancestor in my tree, Levi Coster Humphries - he was the son on a Levi Humphries and Urena Coster and his birth registered in Cricklade, Wiltshire in March 1860 (5a 26), his actual birthplace was Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire. I have located him on the 1861, and 1871 census and then he just vanishes. I am unable to locate any further information, ie census or marriage or death. Can anyone help?

FRY family of Chippenham, Wiltshire

Hi Board,

Back in 2005 I started my family history research after the death of my father. The initial research into my Fry ancestors aimed me in the direction of Chippenham where they were born.

I posted on this board back in 2005 and with the help of Dorothy, Robin and a few others I managed to piece together an important part of my family's past.

Two years later and I have a far greater understanding of my Wiltshire roots so I'm posting again in the hope that I can expand this further.

Back in c.1842 Edwin Albert Fry was born in Chippenham, Wiltshire. Three years later in c.1845 James Augustus Fry was also born in Chippenham. I believe, but without hard evidence, that these were brothers.

The 1881 census shows both Edwin and James in Kingston upon Hull as army pensioners. Both are married and James appears to be living with Edwin and is shown as Edwin's relative on the census.

Also showing as a relative of Edwin on the 1881 census is a Kate Fry, aged 4, born Chippenham, Wiltshire. She does not appear on any future records I have seen. Without evidence, my thinking is that Kate is James's daughter and that she possibly died before the 1891 census was taken.

James married Mary Ann Weare in Chippenham in 1873. Mary appears to have remained in Chippenham when James moved to Hull but is shown with James in Hull on the 1891 census.

I am one of many Fry's born and bred in Kingston upon Hull who are descended from James. I'm sure there's quite a few I'm yet to discover who are related to Edwin.

It would be great to hear from any other researchers who have links or information on James Augustus Fry, Edwin Albert Fry, Kate Fry or Mary Ann Weare from the Chippenham, Wiltshire area.

Thanks,

Jon Fry

Hoping this might look familiar to someone. I have two Snooks that died in Nova Scotia and were born in Wiltshire. Suspect that they may be brothers and immigrated to Canada together.

Henry SNOOKS born c1795 Wiltshire died 1877 Halifax County, Nova Scotia. Occupation was farmer and he may have immigrated between 1837 and 1845. His first child (that I am aware of) was born in Nova Scotia during 1846. His wife is 'of Irish descent' and suspect he married after immigrating.

Hugh SNOOKS born c1805 Wiltshire died 1875 Colchester County, Nova Scotia. He possibly married twice, firstly to Elizabeth ? and after her death to Amelia Parker.

Oddly, on both death registrations the names of their mother and father were not completed. Both men are listed as born in Wiltshire, England.

I can find neither in the 1841 England census. To date I cannot find either on any passenger lists.

If these two gentlemen look even remotely familiar I would appreciate hearing from you.

Best regards,

hlv

Hi all,

We recently discovered in my great-grandfather's military records that he may have fathered a child in Salisbury, UK, during the first world war whilst posted there from Australia - there was a letter in there from the mother.

I think the child may have been Ralph Edward Hart of Salisbury, born 1917 - the birthday and place of birth lines up with that in the letter from the mother - he died in 2002. The mother's name was Mary, but that is all I know.

Does anyone know any more about the Harts in wiltshire during this period as we would love to know if our family is bigger than we thought!

cheers,
marc
Hi all,

Looking for new leads or more information regarding my Wiltshire ancestors.

PAUL BROWN (b.1762 in unknown - d.1828 in Slaughterford), married DEBORAH BROOKS (b.1761 in Acton Turville - d.1817 in unknown) on October 23, 1786 in Tomarton.

I know very little about both of them, although records indicate Deborah was christened on October 18, 1761 in Acton Turville.

Paul's parents are unknown - Deborah's were PHILLIP BROOKS and JANE. They had at least one son, PAUL BROWN (b.August 12, 1799 in Slaughterford), he went on to marry MARY HULBERT on December 31, 1828 in North Wraxall.

I'm looking for any information anyone has that can help me expand what I already have. Please message/email me if you can help!

Best wishes,

Phil

Can anyone help me find descendants of William YORK and Emily Rose (nee HARRINGTON)who were born in Bradford on Avon and married there in 1860? Their children were George born 1860, Sarah Ann b 1862- both in Bradford on Avon, Emma born 1863, Anna Maria born 1865, Rose born 1866 (my great grandmother), James born 1868, William born 1874, Eliza born 1879, Kate born 1881 all of these children were born in Trowbridge.

The family seemed to have stayed in Wiltshire and I am trying to find out if there are any living relatives still around that area and what happened to the others.

Thanks for any help

Kay

Ephraim DICKS b. ab.t 1781 Wiltshire , died in South Africa in 1820

Ephraim Dicks was one of the Ford party that sailed to South Africa on the Weymouth in 1820. He came from Wiltshire, possibly from Deverill Longbridge near Warminster. He was a widower with two sons, Ephraim born 1804, and Joseph Benjamin born 1815. There were two other Dicks families: James aged 23 (wife Dinah and their son, John) and James born in 1782; died 1863; married Jane born 1781 died 1820. They had Uriah; James (Edward Ford); Joseph; Eliza; Robert Harris;(all born in England) It is probable that this James Dicks "adopted" the orphaned Joseph Benjamin. Joseph married Maria Ford. I am trying to trace my English ancestry and appreciate any help

As I am a trifle foggy on my English geography, maybe someone can sort me out. I found a Bradford, Wiltshire and also a Bradford, North Petherton, Somerset. The thing that has me puzzled is the fact that there is a William Goodman in Somerset from 1841 to 1861 and a William Goodman in Wiltshire from 1871 to 1901. Both of them are about the same age. I cannot find the Somerset fellow after 1861 and the Wiltshire fellow before 1871. I have searched up, down and sideways. Please help. Mardell

I am looking for information concerning James Dallimore born about 1800 of Trowridge, Wiltshire. He married Lydia Bailey abt. 1821 in Wiltshire. They remained in Trowbridge until death. All census records show his occupation to be Woolspinner. I have been able to obtain death information on both James and Lydia, but have been unable to obtain any information of their births or marriage. They had a daughter named Sarah born about 1822, I am also looking for birth information on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know if there are pre-1837 Wiltshire marriages which aren't on the IGI?

I have a James GOUGH who must have married his second wife Jane between 1823 and 1841, probably in the West Lavington area - but the marriage isn't on the IGI.

Any advice appreciated.

Best wishes

Mark
