Eleanor Steward CLAPHAM 1807-??

Eleanor Steward CLAPHAM was born at Kirkgate, Leeds, 23 Sep 1807, and baptised at Leeds Saint Peter on 18 May 1810.

Only her father's name is recorded in the baptism register, George CLAPHAM of Kirkgate.

Has anyone come across Eleanor in any other records, marriage, burial, census, ??

Trying to find her mother's name. Suspect it might be Ellen or Eleanor STEWART/STUART as Eleanor Steward CLAPHAM had an elder brother John Stuart CLAPHAM, born 1791. Nothing on the IGI, but there are Eleanor STEWART/STUARTS in Yorkshire, although I suspect George and ?? did not marry in Yorkshire. There is a John STUART marrying at Leeds Saint Peter in 1764 which is a possibility.

Ian Clapham

Family legend says that my great grandfather was deported to Canada after being convicted of Crimes Against the Realm and being stripped of his citizenship. It was also said that he changed his name and there is no one now alive that knows the true family name. He went by the name of James Jackson born abt 1844 in England and married Sarah Ann born abt 1856. I have a possible lead in a marriage certificate I found. A James Jackson married Sarah Ann Reeves in Toronto in 1886. Their ages and his occupation match. He lists his birthplace as Peel/Hull Yorkshire and his parents as James and Ann. I haven't been able to confirm or rule out this possibilty.....What sort of crime would be considered Crime Against the Realm???? Is it a political crime?(I'm from the US). Another part of family lore is that he offer my grandfather $10,000 to join British forces at the start of WWI. Any thoughts or information will be appreciated.

I would appreciate some help in finding out more about Nicholas Osgodby. He was a vicar in the 1600s at St Mary's church Beverley, and I believe he is one of my ancestors. I would particularly like help finding out about his children I'm assuming he has, but I don't have access to parish registers. I think the name changed to Osgerby somewhere along the line as I know I'm directly related to George Osgerby, the coachbuilder of Highgate, Beverley. Also, has anyone got the Osgerby family tree their willing to let me see, as I'm rather stuck!

Thanks,

Tom Hopkins
Herbert Steel - born 21st June 1869, 100 Ravenhurst Street, Aston, Birmingham

Herbert Steel (born 1869) was born to Hannah Steel (1844-1903)at 100 Ravenhurst Street, Aston, Birmingham. Hannah actually resided in Whitwell, Yorkshire. I am looking to find out who the father of Herbert Steel was. Herbert Steel was my great-grandfather. On 1871 census he is marked down as a 'nursing child' with a family in a 'well-to-do' area in York, Yorkshire. On 1881 census, he is actually living with his mother, Hannah Steel in Yorkshire, but she has him marked down as her nephew, not her son. I think that there would of been some monetary provision made for Herbert Steel, but I don't know how to find this out. I think that there maybe a Bastardy record for him. I don't live in the area, and am limited to viewing records online only. I would appreciate any help towards finding who the father of Herbert Steel is. Many thanks.
READER or REEDER family

I have traced my READER (or REEDER) family back to the 1600's in Stainforth (parish of Hatfield),WRY beginning with a Robert REEDER and his wife Sarah (Saray). Their children included sons Robert, William, and Joseph, and daughters Susan(ne), Mary, Grace, Elizabeth and Sarah. Robert(I) died in 1708 or before. (Info from the Manor Court Rolls of Hatfield)

Robert READER(II) must have moved to Whitgift (WRY) as there is a READER marriage there to Mary HOOTON in 1724 and the following baptisms from the IGI:

Dorety dau Robert Reader bap 11 Apr 1725
Ann dau Robert Reader bap 18 Dec 1726
Robert son of Robert Reader bap 28 Jun 1730
Mary dau of Robert Reader bap 16 Apr 1732
Sarah dau of Robert Reader bapt 5 Sep 1734
Eleanor dau of Robert Reader bapt 14 mar 1739
Joseph son of Robert Reader bapt 18 Apr 1742
Thomas son of Robert Reader bapt ?? Jan 1745

Then the family moved to Blacktoft (ERY) across the River Ouse as these entries are found:

Eleanor Reader married Stephen Clark 30 May 1764
Ann Reader married George Cross 11 Dec 1764
Joseph Reader married Ryall Bayliff 20 March 1765
Mary daughter of Joseph Reader bapt 30 March 1765
Robert Reader married Grace Brigham 1 Oct 1767
Robert son of Robert Reader bapt 3 Jul 1768

All of these (except the two Marys) are mentioned in a "diary" of the daughter-in-law of Eleanor (READER) CLARK written about 1840 in Ohio,USA. Robert(III) and Grace emmigrated to Virginia by 1773, as did Eleanor and Stephen CLARK(E).

By the way, Stephen CLARK(E)'s parents are said to be John CLARK and Mary READER (daughter of Robert,I and Sarah above) which would mean that Stephen married his first cousin. I am looking for confirmation of this link

Any information on the BRIGHAM family could be helpful too.

Thanks and Cheers!

Hi

Any help would be appreciated

I have traced William North from Norwich, Norfolk to Leeds arriving between 1860 and 1870 with his family. It is his son James Isaac North that is of interest to me.

James Isaac North
b. Dec 1849 Norwich
m. 1874 Martha F. Chatten. Leeds
d. 1890 Leeds

His son William E. would be the only male member of the family serving by the 1901 Census,

William E. North b.1877 Leeds was living at home in 1901 with his mother and sisters Lucy and Annie. They are in the Civil Parish Armley.

I am at a loss as to how to continue and learn more about William. I tried writing letters and sent 20 to North's in the Leeds area and have 100 more names and addresses.

Many thanks
Steve North (Australia)

He was born in June 29 1895 in Yorkshire Leeds England. His wife's name was Mary Pawson who had a brother who's name was John William Pawson who
was married to Ellen Pawson. Ellen Pawson died on July 5 1918 and is interned at Harehills Cemetary Leeds July 8 1918. Oliver's dad I believe was named Matthew Dunn who I believed belonged to the clergy. If you have any information regarding any of these people, it would help me tremendoulsy in my search for my ancestors. Thank you so much!

My great grandfather Alfred Yates (b.1848) was a stone mason in Gomersall, Yorks. He was married three times(!) to Emma ?, Lizzie Wright and Jane Kibble, who was my great grandmother. His father was a Thomas Yates of Birstal, Yorkshire, but I have no more information about him, nor the name of his wife. I have traced several men who I suspect were Alfred's brothers: Thomas (b.1840); Henry (b.1844)and John (b.1847). Any further information or confirmation please?

If so any details of names etc would be appreciated

Thanks - Craig

Hi - I have a marriage certificate for my gt grandmother - her name was Sarah Pickles Sunderland and she married Fred Dobson on 14 Aug 1897 at Haworth Parish Church in W.R. Yorkshire. Where her father's name should be there's a line drawn through. Where it should have father's profession - the word 'deceased'. I have another marriage certificate where a parent was deceased but it still gave the name of that parent. I wonder why they didn't give the name of her father - I would have thought it might have been illegal not to put down her father's name even though he had died.
any ideas anyone?
Thanks very much,
Kate

George's wife was Ann Isles, they were married abt 1866. Their children were Sarah E., Ada, Lucy, Martha, John T., Edith and Emma Jane (my great-grandmother). Emma Jane was born abt 1878. From what I understand, is Emma Jane was adopted by a family in Canada named Chelles. Emma married Albert Robison in Canada.
Any information on this family would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Amy

I am searching for the death certificate reference for Thomas Watson (born 1811 in Hunslet,Leeds) who, according to oral family history died aged 68 by hanging himself (again according to oral history: from London Bridge). His wife was Elizabeth Roberts whome he married in 1834 in Otley. Elizabeth appeared in the 1881 census as widowed, which squares with Thomas' death year of 1879.

Looking for information on the 14 children of John James Storr 1848 & Hannah Dryden 1852 m: Jan 29 1876. The third child and first son was John Robert (Dandy) 1867-1967 = Elizabeth Ann Ledley 1880. They had 20 ? children and I am led to believe that all in Whitby who bear the Storr name are descendants.
