Thanks for your reply. You are correct about the aggregate dates; my four grandparents were born 1833, 1862, 1858 and 1867 making the average 1855.
However, just for fun, I've dreamed up another challenge! - the difference in years between a person's birth and that of his or her grandparent. In my case it is 112 (one of my cousins is 2 years younger than me) If we do the same arithmetic as before, i.e. the average for 4 g/parents, mine works out at 90.
