Hi - I wonder if an expert can help me please? I have a feeling that an older relative had his name changed after birth by deed poll as there is absolutely no record of his birth. He was illegitimate and years ago as you know the shame was awful and think this was done later by his mother ple
How can I go about finding this info out please? Any info and I would be so grateful as it's driving me nuts!
Thanks for your time :-)
I am new to this and I apologise in advance if this is breaching any protocols. My family have links to Liverpool where my great great grandfather was born. I have searched the Free BMD database and found a possible link. My question is, do I need to order the cert at £20 only to find its a dead end, or is there another way to check this info.

Thanks
Andrew

Hi,

Would someone please explain how best, when based in Australia, to obtain a Death Certificate (or other) when the page number is either not available or only partially available.

The only options on the Government web site appear to be to ring them or write to them. If I were certain that I had the correct ancestor, writing to them would be OK, and presumably a money order would be sent with the letter. But if I am not certain it's the correct person, then I've paid the full fee, where as online they pay a part refund if your additional details don't match.

Unfortunately I have this with both my great great grandmother (Louisa Huntley nee Soden) and her husband (John Huntley), in what is already my brick wall family.

Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Karen
Hi there, I've been managing to trace my ancestors fairly well using the BMD indexes and census records, up to a point.

I really need confirmation that these people are all linked, and as such I could do with actual BMD certificates.

I see that on the indexs you get here, it references a book volume and page. Is this where the actual certificate is stored, and how can I view a copy, or get a copy, if they are available?

This sort of information would be incredibly useful.

If it involves me travelling to Somerset House then so be it!

Replies most welcome!

Phil

Trouble Navigating British Census and BDM Records
I live in Australia and I have generally found that the most effective method of family history research has been birth, death and marriage records, going back to the UK I have found that Census records are good for late nineteenth century research but going back earlier I have not found them to be very helpful.

I have found that the birth and death records only seem to mention the person concerned and not other details such as their parents. Also the marriage records only mention either the bride and groom without also mentioning the other party. This has made it very difficult to find records when names are very common and/or dates are a bit uncertain.

I was just wondering is there a more effective way of searching records to find more information about my ancestors or are there some other records I should be looking at?

The ancestors I have had trouble finding include John Downey who married Mary Hills (or Hill) around 1838 in England. John was born in County Kerry, Ireland around 1816. Mary was born in England around 1815. They seem to have migrated to New Zealand or Australia around the 1840s or 1850s.

They seem to have had children John, Henry, Mary, Edward and Frances in England, and Michael Joseph, Bridget Ann, Catherine Jane in New Zealand and/or Australia, but I can’t find any UK records for them.

I also have a James Booth born in Lancashire, England around 1828 but can’t find any UK records for them, Mary Gill born around 1809 in England and daughter of James Gill as well as Elizabeth Spratt born around 23 March 1776 in Holborn, London but I’m having trouble finding records. Is there a better way of searching?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Geoffrey
I have a death certificate from 1952. In the section giving detail of the informant it reads 'W. Goodwin, causing the body to be buried ...' then gives an address.

As the lady died in hospital and was unmarried, is it safe to assume that the informant was either a friend, and the address is hers, or a nurse or official from the hospital? And the phrase 'causing the body to be buried', I know she was buried in an unmarked grave, so does that me she had no family or friends to bury her?

All very sad sounding!

Many thanks

Andrea

I have only a few bits of information on my 2nd greaat grandmother,Elizabeth Douglass who is suppose to be from GARTOCHARILL, believed to be in the UK. She married Bnjamin H. Woodard who was born @1820 in Springfield,Me. I have a date that is in her family of 1794 and the name FULTAN, which I don't know who it refers to. Perhaps the name of a town or ship or family member. I also have the names of children plus the words "Relic". Children are Mary Ann,William, John, James and a Robert with a ? I believe the child, James M., is my gr. grandfather born 16 Dec. 1849, Springfield,Me., died 2 Oct.1921 in Colville,Wa.
Married Sophia J. Parshall, born 4 June 1861 in Mich. and died 15 Sept. 1925 in Walla Walla, Wa.

Hi!
Not a very nice subject, I know, but we are trying to find out about my husbands brother who was "still born" in 1972. We can't find out any info from family, as his parents have died and other members don't know very much. We know his name, and date of birth/death and the hospital, but that's all. The final outcome of finding this info would be visit his grave and pay our respects.

Unfortunatley, we are completely stuck, we can't find him on any of the free death registers on line.

can anyone offer any advise on finding info?

Thanks

kath

Handwritten notes on Birth Registers - Help

Hi

I am researching my brother's partner's family tree for her and have come across something I haven't seen in my own tree research. On her father's entry in the Birth Register, there is a handwritten '1' next to the typed entry and, going to the bottom of the page, there is a corresponding note, giving the same different info (mother's maiden name as Ball instead of Bull) and different Vol number, instead of a page number it says See (some character I'm not sure of) '63.
I assumed this was either a different person (which is odd as the middle initial is the same and so is the district) or a correction.

When I looked up his sister, I also found a note attached, which had all the SAME info, but had See S,63 instead of a page number. Could anyone shed any light as to what these notes mean?

His birth was 1941 Bristol, hers was 1943 Weymouth.

What is the best way to continue my research.

The last person I've traced in my family tree was born in Devonport, Devon, England as per the 1851 census data.

Thanks,

-- Neil

How to research family before 1841 Census's???

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone else is encountering the same problems. You can get great details off the records so you can skip back through the census's, but when you get the last and eldest person, where do you go from there? You may have say a name and approx date of birth etc, but the births dont have parents names or details, only a name and date of child born. There could be 20 other children born that month with the same name and location, how can you work out which is your ancestor from that? I also use IGI which can give you sometimes parents names etc but is there something im missing or is it a common prob?
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks Chrissy

Is this correct?
There are very vague stories in the family about something 'not nice' happening, i.e. criminal.
UK Counties and Postcodes

For people researching from outside the UK, I thought this might be helpful.
UK postcodes are allotted according to the nearest Postal sorting office, not strictly according to county.
For instance, Oundle, Northants, is nearer to Peterborough sorting office than Northampton, therefore it has a PE postcode. Some places in North Northants have an LE code because their nearest office is Market Harborough, whilst others in the south have an Oxfordshire code because they are near Banbury.
I hope you can all understand this. What I'm trying to say is, don't assume a place is in a certain county by looking at the postcode (this applies to other counties as well)

Do I need to have the exact date to get a marriage or babtisim certificate.? I do have the names, places and year of my ancestors but not the exact dates..

Where can I get an-1857 marriage certificate from, or is that impossible? As I wrote to the Parish where my g-parents got married giving the full date of the marriage and asked the Priest if he had this record and would he let me know if he had, but I never even got a reply, not much to ask for as I wasn't asking him to do a research for me.....
And is there any hope of getting a death certificate without a date or year, even though I have the names and exact places.
What are the fees for these certs? If anyone can help I would be more than gratful.

Birth and Marriage Certificate Help Needed

Firstly, I recently ordered copies of mypaternal grandparents birth certificates from the GRO and when they arrived, on both certificates, the father was not listed. I presume this means they were illegitimate, as both took the surname of their mother. And I also presume, short of finding a living relative who knows, that I can never find out who the fathers were.

Am I right on all this?

Secondly, I have a copy of their marriage certificate from 1936. This was not ordered from the GRO - it is an original, or a copy of the original. Next to my grandfathers entry under 'father's name and occupation' is a person listed as 'Jack Swaine' (deceased). His mother's surname is Swaine, and that is her unmarried name.

Would I be right in thinking this person may be made up? I know he took his mother's surname and not his fathers. I can find no uncle called Jack whom he could have regarded as a 'father'. His grandfather was called Thomas. I have also noticed his age is put at 21, when in reality it was 23.

Should I have doubts about the validity of this certificate? How can the anomalies be accounted for?

Help understanding an England/Wales marriage certificate

I have a marriage certificate from 1838. The marriage took place in the Register Office in Canterbury and was recorded by the registrar as being according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the "Parties".

I'd be really grateful for anyone who can help me understand what "Parties" might have meant in this context. Does it mean the happy couple just turned up and said they wanted to get married, so the Registrar put whatever came into his head so as not to leave the field blank? Or might it act as code for indicating some religious affiliation?

Many thanks in advance for any help that anyone might be able to provide.

Searching for the three names in a family group, perhaps with others about 1890. ABRAHAM SAVAGE his name is written on the wedding certificate of his Son JOHN SAVAGE in Lancashire in 1899 together with a witness MARY LIZZIE SAVAGE (unknown relationship but assumed family). Since full records are available for JOHN after this date in England but not before in the UK, and since no records exist before or after this wedding for JOHN or MARY in the UK, I feel they must have travelled fron Ireland for the wedding and returned afterwards. Does this family group show on anyones information. All help would be much appreciated. Best Regards to All. Jeff Savage.

Tibbals family information

I am looking for any information I can get on my family tree. I have just begun my search, as I live in Campbell River- located on Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada), it is proving rather difficult to gather information about my English family here. My mum dad came to Canada in the late 1950's, with my 2 elder sisters, another sister and myself were born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, in the 1960's. The first person I'm trying to track information on is the following; an Aunt, her name is Betty Irene Glover (nee:Tibbals), she was married but was widowed in 1955 (his name was Jim (James) Glover who was a boxer), I do not know where she lives, or anything about her. The rest of the information I have to go on is the following; my Grandfather was named Charles Joseph Tibbals - born 1890-1900,(apparently worked the dog tracks) died 1978 in London, England, my Grandmother was named Ethel Maude Tibbals (nee: Berkin) born 1899-1900, died 1961 London, England. My dad also had a brother who was killed in action at Dunkirt (he served on the H.M.S.Ivanhoe, his name was John Charles Tibbals - is there anyone out there that served with him? I would love to hear from you. I would appreciate anything anyone out there may have, please email information to me. Thank you.

Anybody have an Andrew LAWLER/LAWLOR? I do not know when he was born or where, but he did marry in County Carlow, Ireland Feb 11 1839 to Honoria BYRNE, who was my distant aunt. They had a daughter, Margaret, Dec 1840. The marriage and the baptism took place in Ballyloughan, RC Parish of Bagenalstown, County Carlow, Ireland. The family emigrated but we don't know where or when. I haven't found them in the USA, so perhaps they lived in another country.
