JOHNSTON/E - Y-DNA Connections

Six Johnstons in various parts of North America have had our Y-DNA tested and are evidently from the same Johnston/e family line. Co. Antrim has been confirmed for at least one of the 6 Y-DNA cousins. We may be lucky and be able to find all of our ancestors in Co. Antrim. The details are as follows:

1. Francis "Frank" Johnston/e, b. 1805

2. Robert "Red Robin" Johnston/e, b. 1808

3. Archibald "Archie" Johnston/e, b. 1815

4. Robert Johnston, b. 1797

5. George Johnston, b. 1799

6. James Johnston, b. 1798

Johnston/es 1, 2 & 3 wrote their surname early in Upper Canada as Johnstone, and the Assessment Roll records show Johnstone and other variations. The census enumerators wrote it as Johnson, Johnston and Johnstone, and eventually the Johnston spelling prevailed in all 3 family lines.

Interestingly, all of these Johnstons moved to Upper Canada and farmed in the Ottawa Valley area. This begs the question, "Did they know each other in Ireland?" The Johnston/es 1, 2 & 3 above did know each other as they farmed within shouting distance of one another and were probably brothers. Johnstons 4, 5 & 6 farmed in different counties and townships.

My father recalled listening as a child to the old people and hearing them talk about Ballymena. This is the only "hint" that I have linking my family to Co. Antrim.

There are some other interesting clues. My Johnston family in Canada was close to an Anderson family with my grandmother being an Anderson. Her brother Clark Anderson is buried in Westminster Cemetery, Prescott Co., Ontario, Canada, as is my great, great grandfather, Robert "Red Robin" Johnston. In the same cemetery is Matthew ELDER, b. ca. 1783 in Ireland, a minister and a relative of Clark ANDERSON. There is also another minister buried in the same cemetery: Thomas SCOTT, d. 1881. He was born in Ballylessan in the parish of Ballymena, Ireland, and ordained June 1844 by the Presbytery of Hamilton. Perhaps all of these people were from the Ballymena parish.

My Anderson connection is Benjamin Anderson, b.1785 in Ireland. He married Mary Wylie, b. 1798 in Ireland. We don't know where in Ireland, but our Anderson and Johnston families apparently knew each other in Ireland and settled in Upper Canada owning farms near to each other.

Any assistance will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Cliff. Johnston
Pearland, Texas

Tracing the origins of a photo taken by Allison

Hi all,
I have a photograph taken by Allison and Allison, Belfast in the 1880s/90s or thereabouts..which I believe is of "Minnie" a sister or neice of my gggrandmother HARVEY.
The photo has a number on the back which I am told can be traced through Allison's records at PRONI and could lead to the identification of the subject.
Allison and Allison were photographers, first in Belfast, then in other towns. They inscribed a number on the backs of their photos, which corresponded to entries in their day-books. These numbers would identify the photos.

Allison Collection at the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) PRONI has those day-books. The Allison Collection's call number is D/2886.
...we think the number could be 2353 or 12353...see this thread:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,351032.0.html

Is there anyone who could be going to the PRONI to try to idenitify this photo for me please..
Thank you for any help or advice

McNeils of Ballycastle

I am searching for for the parents of Charles McNeil and his brother, Archibald McNeil. They were in the shipping business in the early 1700's. Charles' son, Archibald, and Archibald's sons John, Charles and Adam had already come to America, about 1730. In 1737, Charles and Archibald packed up their household goods and, together with their wives, and Archibald's son, also named Archibald, and the younger Archibald's wife Sarah Johnson McNeil, and 2 year old son, William McNeil, sailed out of Workington, England on a ship named Cathrine. On July 17, 1737, the ship wrecked off the coast of Nova Scotia, at Sable Island (also known as the Isle of Sable). Charles and his wife, the elder Archibald and his wife, and young Archibald's son William were among over 100 people who drowned.

I would like to hear from any McNeils from Ballycastle who might have heard this tale handed down in their family. There has been some speculation that the father of Charles and Archibald was also named Archibald, and that there was also a man named Clem McNeil in the family, perhaps in the early 1600's.

I have traced most of the descendants of Charles and Archibald McNeil after they came to the US. Charles' son Archibald, who lived mostly in Branford and New Haven, CT, had five sons. Two were named Charles, and they died in infancy. The other three were named Archibald, John and Samuel (my direct ancestor). I have traced Archibald and Samuel, but nothing much is know of John. He was born in CT in 1745 and moved to Amenia, in Dutchess County NY.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Kathy McNeil Beaudry

Breckagh: Two Identical Townland Names in Antrim

So I found a hit on old Archie in the IGI over at familysearch:

http://tinyurl.com/8lcmej

Now the townland, "Breckagh" appears in BOTH Balleymoney and Skerry parish.

1. Since Breckagh Skerry is larger than Breckagh Balleymoney, the odds dictate where to start first. Does anyone see it otherwise?

2. Is there other data I can extract from the record to help break the tie?

3. Why two townlands with the same same in the same county? What were they thinking?
Antrim, had a son Thomas LESLIE who was b. c1834 in/of that same area.
John also had a daughter Mary Ann LESLIE b. 1835 who married John MOODY. They had 7 children -
John, Mary Jane, James, Margaret Annie, Martha, Ellen and Thomas MOODY all born between 1857 and 1874.
John Moody the son married Mary HOGG
Mary Jane MOODY his sister married William HOGG who I suspect is probably a brother to the Mary HOGG that married John MOODY.
William HOGG was said be (via Birth Records) a son of Andrew HOGG and Elizabeth CONNOR.
If anyone has further details about any of these families, especially the Moody's, I would be Most greatful.
Thank You.

John MOODY b.1835 poss. Balnamore/Ballymoney area of Co. Antrim, Nor. Ire. m. Mary Ann LESLIE

I am searching for more info regarding John MOODY's Parents or family.
This John MOODY was born in 1835 and prob. in the Balnamore/Ballymoney area of Co. Antrim, Nor. Ireland.
He married in 1856 at the St. James Church in Ballymoney to Mary Ann LESLIE daug. of John LESLIE. On their marriage record John MOODY was said to be "of Balnamore".
Based on John's birth year, I guess his Father's birth year to be around c1807. The Names given to John MOODY and Mary Ann LESLIE's 7 children were as follows:
John, Mary Jane, James, Margaret Annie, Martha, Ellen and Thomas MOODY.

Mary Ann Leslie also had a brother named Thomas Leslie who was a flax dresser in Balnamore.
There is some relation via marriage to the CLEMENTS/Clemmons? family as well as the HOGG family.
John and Mary Ann Leslie MOODY had 2 children who married into the HOGG family of Andrew HOGG and Elizabeth/Eliza CONNOR. I also noticed that in Ballymena, Co. Antrim there was a Presbyterian church called the Connor Presbyterian Church, I have no way of knowing if this is in any way related to Eliza's family line or not.
If anyone can help with information regarding any of these families, I would be most greatful as they are part of my Ydna Moody gene pool and I am trying to determine if this John MOODY has a lineage line to our earliest known Ydna ancestor Thomas MOODY b.c1710 in/of the Aghadowey area of Co. L'derry who married Jean McQUISTON, and to a Samuel MOODY a linen weaver of Nor. Ireland who married "Martha" and to another John MOODY who was a boot maker who was also of Nor. Ireland. All of these MOODY's came from Nor. Ireland to America, and all but the last one came to PA. John the bootmaker went to New York City, his sons and descendants were haberdashers (hat makers etc.) and they removed to CT a bit later on. All of these Moody's are part of our Ydna family and I am trying to see if there might be a lineage line between them.
Any help at all would be most greatly appreciated.
Thank You.

Are the names Ferguson and Watson in your tree?

I am trying to help someone locate family members and would really be grateful for anyone's assistance please. The reason I have posted on the Antrim board is the fact of James' return to Aghagallon. Were these Creaneys related if so,how?

The story so far:

Mary Ruby Watson b1900--father William Watson
James Joseph Ferguson died 1934 aged 32, Aghagallon Co Antrim.

Mary and James were living in England (we think were from Northern Ireland) but James came in 1932, along with his baby daughter,to live in Aghagallon village, with a couple called Hugh and Mary Creaney. Hugh and Mary were siblings and lived opposite St Patrick's RC Church.

Mary Ruby stayed on in England and married again.

James died in 1934 and was buried in Old Aghagallon graveyard.Hugh and Mary continued to look after the baby until their deaths--the child was 8 by this stage. This child was then reared by neighbours.

Thank you for any help you can give.
Hi,
I need help to find out where my GG grandmother, Margaret Dale, is buried. Margaret died in Ballycloughan, Ballymena, in 1892 but was not buried in any of the graveyards in the Ballymena region. Someone has already searched for me and no sign of her anywhere. I am assuming that she had asked to be buried with or near her husband Samuel Dale who had died around 40 years earlier. Her unmarried son and daughter were buried together at the First Broughshane Presbyterian Church.

I wouldn't have a clue where Samuel was buried, so I would not know where to start. Does anyone have any suggestions? Would the Death Certificate in this instance state where Margaret was buried.

Shirlee
Wellington
New Zealand
CALHOUN, James from Antrim 1764

Seeking information on parents/family of James Calhoun, born around 1764. Was a linen merchant in Antrim, emigrated to U.S. in 1780's, travelling with Andrew Woods, also of Antrim. Following are excerpts about him from historical biographies of New Hampshire. Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

Excerpt from Book of Biographies, Grafton County

James Calhoun, Sr., was of Scotch-Irish descent, and carried on a business as a linen merchant before his emigration to this country. Upon his arrival in the United States he settled in Lyman, N.H., bought a farm, and devoted the remainder of his life to agricultural labors, becoming prosperous and well-to-do, and very much respected by his fellow-townsmen. His death occurred when about fifty years of age; his wife was called home to her well-earned rest at the age of seventy-four. Their children were as follows: Solomon, Rebecca, James, Isaac, Sally, Mary and David.

Excerpt from Historical Sketches of Lyman New Hampshire

James Calhoun was born in the north of Ireland, and became a citizen of Lyman as early as 1790. He married Miss Sally Streeter, a sister of Zachariah Cowen's wife, and located on the farm since owned by Jehial Knapp, west of Parker Hill, where he reared a family of five children, namely: Solomon, Isaac, James Jr., Mary and David.

Excerpt from the History of Littleton

......James who was the first of the family in this country, coming hither from the North of Ireland with Andrew Woods, who settled in Bath, while Mr. Calhoun located in the adjoining town of Lyman. It was a virile stock, with a tendency to ideas and a gathering of knowledge.

Hi,
I'm looking for information on my gg grandfather John Purse who married Nancy McConnell at Portglenone 2nd Parish Presbyterian Church, Ballymena in 1861. At the time of the marriage John was living in Garvagh and Nancy in Lisrodden. John's father's name is Jonathan and I think his mother was Margaret Ann (don't know her surname). Soon after the marriage they moved to Scotland and I have quite a lot of information from there, but don't know where to start on the Irish part of it.
If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

His wife was Sarah Hazelton also born in Antrim about 1823.

There is an Archibald Gardner, born about 1790, in Dervock, married 5 June 1815, to Margaret McKinlay, b about 1794, also in Dervock. The listings I have seen show they had no children. However, the similarity of the name and birthplace and ages suggest the possibility they could be my ggggrandparents. Maybe they had children later? Can anyone supply additional information or suggestions?

Thanks for any help...

Harry Gardiner
Kingsmill family near Roscrea, Ireland

I am following on from your posts regarding the Kingsmill family that I found on Rootsweb.

I am trying to find out more about my Irish Kingsmills.

My GGGG grandfather, Henry Kingsmill (b. ca. 1745), was a retired soldier, having served in Gibraltar in the 59th Reg. Foot, following on, living in Borris in Ossory (living there in 1824), I presume where he held land. He was a sub-sheriff.

It would appear to me that most of Henry's family of his generation and that preceding were military men. It also appears to me that many of the family may well have been members of the Royal Irish Constabulary and I know two of his sons came to Australia where they worked as sheriff's bailiffs in NSW.

Several other cousins also came to NSW and worked in the early prison system, policing or as bailiffs. I suspect that this was a government initiative of the time using former RIC men, as I do know that the Victorian Police force developed from the RIC and used former RIC men.

Looking at the scattering of Kingsmill's it would appear that they were closely related, with Kingsmills located at Donaghmore, Borris in Ossory and Templemore, all being in close vicinity to Roscrea, the nearest market town.

Incidentally, a foundation Connemara stallion by the name of Mervyn Kingsmill was bred by the Countess de Vesci in nearby Abbey Leix during the mid 1960-70's, and I am looking into the connection given the proximity to our Kingsmill clan.
http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/mervyn+kingsmill

I am wondering if anyone had any further insight into navigation of our Kingsmill family in Ireland? I would be most pleased to make contact with you! I am having some trouble in tracing Henry's generation's preceding. I have included some excerpts following that you may wish to comment on also. In a couple of months I will be visiting Ireland and hope to learn more about the family whilst there.

Cheers

Maree Worthington

Exerpt
Irish Migrants in the Canadas, a new approach

By Bruce S. Elliott

Published 2004 McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP

ISBN:0773513213

p. 159

No early cluster of Tipperary Protestants formed in Toronto in the 1820’s and 1830’s as had in Montreal, but Toronto was then a much smaller centre. Nonetheless, a few gentlemen and prosperous merchants established themselves in the city at various times. The first of these was George Kingsmill of Templemore, a former soldier who came to Toronto in 1829 and ran a provisional store in Market Street. He later became high bailiff and an aide to Sir Francis Bond Head during the Mackenzie Rebellion. Kingsmill was an uncle of Thomas Frazer Kingsmill who came to London in 1865 via Georgia and Toronto and established the well-known London department store, Kingsmill’s.

KINGSMILL’s Website

http://www.kingsmills.com/aboutus/index.html

Our Heritage

In 1865 Thomas Frazer Kingsmill, an Irish immigrant, opened a dry goods store on the main street of London, Ontario, Canada. Over the years, the Kingsmill family has continued to offer fine products and services from this location. The family history represents a proud tradition of retail service to residents of Southwestern Ontario and beyond.
Annie Porter Belfast c1897
Trying to find info on Annie Porter living around the Belfast area of N Ireland between 1897 (could've been before) and 1917 when she supposedly married a Richard Harrison (Dec 1917).

There are no marriages on the UK records for this couple in Dec 1917 but can anyone say if there are on the Irish marriages and if possible let me know the ref no. so I can apply for the cert.

The story goes that they married after Richard was given leave to get married while serving in France, Annie was living I think in the Belfast area at the time but there was also mention of the marriage being in England. This fact has since been ruled out - unless of course they did Wales or Scotland aswell.

Richards pay was paid to Annie from the forces but who knows if they did actually marry or not.

Any other info ie, Annies birth would also be gratefully received as this could help determine where the marriage took place.

Thanks.

searching for John MOODY b.c1831 Poss. in Balnamore area

I am searching for more info on a John MOODY b.c1831 POSSIBLY in the Balnamore, Co. Antrim, Nor. Ireland area. His wife's name is unknown to me at this time. He had a son named James MOODY however that was born in 1863. He married on Dec. 24, 1883 to MaryAnn LYNCH daughter of Wm. Lynch and Margaret STEWART/Stuart.
In their marriage record from PRONI it states that Mary Ann was 7 years older than James. They were both Presbyterian's. John MOODY was a farmer and his son James was a millworker. This was a first marriage for both James and Mary Ann.
Mary Ann stated that she lived in Coldagh. The church in which they were married in was located in Ballymoney, Co. Antrim.

Any info at all on John MOODY the father of this James would be greatly appreciated as they are part of our Ydna family tree. My apologies for not having more info on the father John MOODY of whom I seek further info, but the marriage record only gave the Father's name and occupation, not the Mothers name.
Thank You.

Antrim - Connor - Ballymena - Castlegore Ancestors

I'm looking for any information about my ancestors from Antrim.

My Great Grandmother Elizabeth Bell (1888) was born in Ayrshire to parents George Bell (1857) and Agnes Armour (1856). George and Agnes were married at Ballymena in 1879. George Bell's father David Bell was a farmer at Castlegore.

Agnes has an elder sister Helen Armour (1855) who married Samuel Wilson (1853) in 1879. Again the marriage takes place in Ballymena, and the Wilson family also come from this area.

The Armours were born in Lanarkshire, but going back a generation their parents were also from the same area of Antrim: Samuel Armour (1830) son of William Armour and Helen McAloney, and Elizabeth (Eliza) Houston (1831) daughter of Joseph Houston.

Is there anyone out there that has an interest in this area?

TIA.

Stewart
