My great-grandfather father Arthur Laidlaw 1871-1947 came over to Glasgow from Loughgall, Co Armagh in the early 1870s with his parents William and Margaret, along with brothers William and John. Three more children Mary, Elizabeth and Joseph were born in Scotland.

William from Loughgall was married to Anne (nee Cranston). He predeceased her and she remarried becoming Anne Neil.

Her father, I think was William Cranston from Loughgall - on a tithe list from 1828 which probably puts his birth into the 18th Century. The Irish ancestry is a bit sketchy - anyone have any knowledge of the Laidlaws and Cranstons from Loughgall?

Parish Records 18th Century

I sent a message a while ago with an inquiry about the Hamilton family of Vicar's Cairn. I've decided to make a side trip to Belfast and Armagh while on a visit to England. My subject, Robert HAMILTON, left from Derry for Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1771 leaving behind parents, in-laws (FERGUSON of Tyrone) and several siblings. In order to trace people that far back I would need to access parish records.

The HAMILTON family who settled in Canada were C of E, so I would assume they were Church of Ireland in Armagh. Are there parish records for the 18th century? Where are they kept? Are they open to the public?

Anything you can tell me would be welcome.
Malloys/Molloys from Lurgan or Silverwood County Armagh

In October 1916, my grandmother, Mary Ann Malloy, emigrated to New York with her sister, Sarah Malloy, aboard the Philadelphia. According to the ship's manifest they were met at Ellis Island by their brother, Charles Malloy . They were from Silverwood and Lurgan, County Armagh.

Charles Malloy came to New York a few years earlier and started a window cleaning business in New York City. He later married a woman name Margaret. (I've discovered that Charles and Margaret lived in Flushing, Queens...Jackson Heights, New York and passed in 1975 an 1974 respectively). There was another brother, Henry Malloy, and he too...came to New York before the sisters. I know of one brother who stayed in Ireland and his name was Thomas Malloy. I've been told he was in the Military.

I am looking for Malloy/Molloy family members. My father's mom, Mary Ann Malloy, died when he was two or three. His father remarried and as a result....my dad lost touch with his Malloy/Molloy family.

My dad, R.Thomas Eikhof...(named for his Uncle Thomas Malloy who lived in Ireland), turned 85 this week, and has always wondered about his Irish Family and Heritage. Years ago we began searching records in hopes of at least finding the cemetery in which his mom is buried. We end up with nothing. It has been very disappointing.

I know there are Malloys out there.....perhaps, in the Queens New York area as well as County Armagh and would love it if afer all these years my dad had the opportunity to meet his long lost family.

My grandfather was William Hart. His birth record indicates he was born in the District of Meigh, Newry, County Armagh on 18 May 1873 (Anahay). Williams's parents were Ferdinand and Alice (Durnan) Hart. Present at the birth was a Judith L. Hart (I understand she was born 26 December 1859) according to the Certified Copy of An Entry of Birth. I understand William's siblings to be: Patrick (married Mary Ann Mallon, and named a son "Ferdinand"), Margaret (married John Loughran), ALICE (married Steven RICE), Lawrence, Mary, Thomas, and John. My Grandfather married Loretta/Laura Brennan in New York City, NY in 1911. He had been a fireman on an English ship out of Liverpool, England, and claimed asylum in the USA during War World I. Loretta had 4 children who survived to adulthood: Alice (my mother), William, Patrick Joseph, and John Lawrence. There are cousins through marriage with Loretta Brennan with the surname Daly, one of which was a nun. Her name was Mother Finbar, and I believe she ran an orphanage in Pennsylvania, somewhere near Pittsburgh.

Please be advised that Alice Hart/Mrs. Stephen Rice lived at 88 St Anne Street, Birkenhead, England, according to a letter postmarked February 16, 1931. This letter was from Brigid Kelly (the return address on the envelope is: Anahaia, Killeavey Post Office, Nr.Newry, County Armagh).

Are any of these relatives of yours? I hope to hear from you. Lawrence Hart Huebner
Alice and Stephen Rice, were my great grandparents and lived at 88 St. Anne Street, Birkenhead, England, and then moved to Eaton Road, Birkenhead. Please can you tell me more about the letter that was sent by Brigid Kelly (sister in law of Thomas Hart - Alice's brother)to Alice Hart on 16 February 1931 from Newry, as mentioned in your message. Alice and Steven had 9 children, all boys - Ferdinand, Raymond, Peter (married Gertrude), Steven (married Dorothy), Joseph (married Dora - my grandparents), Tommy (married Mildred), and there were 3 more sons.
Any more information would be much appreciated as I have just started doing the family tree - Fiona WILLIAMS-PRICE-RICE-HART

Hi
My ancestor was William Cline, married to Ellen possibly around 1838. I have evidence of births of children 1839 in Ballincollig, and 1840 in Charlemont. William Cline was in the British army possibly based in/near Ballincollig. There doesn't seem to be evidence of their marriage in army records although their children's baptism certificates were recorded in army returns. Can any one help please? I've no idea where to go from here with this. I would love to find out whether Ellen, my gt. gt. grandmother was Irish!

Zed

A search up my family tree has led me to Israel (Izrael) Moore (Moor), born 1713 in Ireland - and possibly in County Armagh. His daughter was Agnes Moor(e), born ca 1747, according to unsourced listings.
He was married to a Nancy Lewis, also of Ireland.
They emigrated to Charleston, South Carolina ca 1768 and remained there. Agnes married Josias (Joshua) Barth (Baird) in So.Car.
Might there be anyone else who has Israel Moore in their tree who could verify the Co. Armagh origins?
(I have a copy of Israel Moore's Will (1780), so have his children's names if that would be of use to anyone.)
Thank you for any assistance.
Nancy Wilson

Does anyone have any info on the McConnell's that lived in Co. Armagh, Ireland? The McConnells that I desend from moved to Peel County, Ontario, Canada sometime between 1820-1840. The specific family members that moved to Canda were John McConnell and his wife Mary Clark (they later moved to Grey County), his son Nevin, John's brother Thomas, John and Thomas's cousin William McConnell and his wife Agnes aka Ann Smith. John McConnell and Mary Clark may have brought other children with them to Canada but I have no record of them.

I know that there are several other McConnell families in Canada and in the US that come from Co. Armagh. I was courious if someone has done some research in that area. I believe that the McConnell population in Co. Armagh was small. I didn't know if anyone had any idea if all of these families that come from Co. Armagh are related or if there were several families of McConnell's in that area.

I am reserarch the John Cardwell family. The following is an exerpt from the family history:

John and Rachel (Payne) Cardwell came from Armagh County, Ireland, which is on the borderline between the North and South division. Generally speaking the North of Ireland is Protestant and Southern Ireland is Catholic. Much fighting and feuding spilled bloodshed in this area.

The Cardwells settled in the Media, PA area in early 1800, where six children were born; three boys and three girls. Hannah, Sara, Rachel, John, George, and Alex. The Cardwells later moved west to Lake City, Minnesota.

BURIALS - NEWRY - HARMAN CHILDREN

Help Please.

I have 2 ancestors who died in Newry around 1895. I have both death certificates. They were children of a soldier with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.

Places of death as shown on the death certificates are - 2 Barrack St Co Armagh and 8 Edward St, Co Armagh.

As both parents were Protestant I searched for the graves at St Patrick's Church of Ireland, Newry. However there is no record of their burial there. The local person responsible for the graveyard records also made another check on those graves registered, as apparently the records show not only the relevant plot details but also the names of the plots on either side.

No records of my relatives were found.

Does anyone know of any Irish records which show the Place of burial, or otherwise can anyone tell me of an alternative place to search for these graves?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Michael

John Lester, book agent, Newry, 1819

I am seeking information regarding John Lester, "book agent", who can be found in the 1819 Newry Directory of Merchants, etc. John is my 3rd g-grandfather and was the father of John William Lester, b.1825-26, d. 1886, and Charlotte Ruth Lester, b. 1817, d. 1903. Son John William was a teacher and emigrated to London, Ontario, Canada, in 1853. In 1846-48 he signed as a member of the Mullaglass Orange Lodge #107. John William Lester was also a witness to his sister Charlotte Ruth Lester's 1851 marriage in the Church of Meigh, Meigh, County Armagh, to Andrew Pollock, b. 1819, d. 1871. John Lester, "book agent", was also listed in Charlotte's marriage record as her father. Charlotte and her husband Andrew emigrated to Huron County, Ontario, Canada.

John William Lester, teacher, married Margaret Best, b. 1836, d. 1922, in 1855 in London, Ontario. Margaret was the daughter of Soloman Best and Isabelle Henning of Cloughenney, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Cloughenney was just a few miles north, northwest of Newry.

I am interested in any death record, cemetery record, or anything related to the John Lester, "book agent" family.
Alexander A. and Jane Mitchell of Clady Beg (Manor of Charlemont), Kilclooney Parish

Seeking information on the family of Alexander and Jane Mitchell of Clady Beg in Kilclooney Parish, County Armagh. Alexander A. Mitchell was born about 1800, in or near Clady Beg. His father was George Mitchell, b. about 1761. George's father may have been Alexander Mitchell of Ballylane townland, b. about 1730.

Alexander Mitchell died in 1852, according to the Account Book (1850-1864) of Francis William Caulfield, 2nd Earl of Charlemont. Mitchell's widow, Jane, is referenced in the accounts during the years 1852-1857.

Alexander and Jane had the following children:

Rachael, b. about 1836 (married Hugh Coulter);
Elizabeth, b. about 1838 (married Joseph Marshall);
Mary, b. about 1840;
Robert, b. about 1842 (wife unknown);
Alexander A., born 20 July 1842 or 1843 (married Margaret Kilpatrick, daughter of James Kilpatrick of Ballylane).

Alexander and Jane may also have had a son named George, born in the later 1820s. (It is not clear, however, whether Jane is the mother of all of the children, since I don't have a marriage date for the couple.)

I'm especially interested in any information on Jane and who her family might have been. The Mitchells, who were flax growers, were closely associated with their neighbors, the Martins (especially the family of James Martin and his son, Robert); Jane may have been a Martin. She appears to have lived through the 1860's and possibly as late as 1887. She's named in Griffith's Valuation as holding land in Clady Beg, Kilmachugh, and Clady More.

I'm also interested in any information regarding the Mitchells' relatives, their earlier ancestry and Scottish background. Any information regarding where in Scotland these Mitchells may have originated is especially welcome.

Note: George Mitchell, b. about 1761, appears to have had at least two other sons, William and [David].

Robert Mitchell of Kilmachugh and Ballylane, and his brother, Samuel Mitchell of Ballylane (who died about 1824), were probably close relatives of George Mitchell.
Apparently married Anne Rennie in 1810 and had four sons Robert, John, George and William who then migrated to Australia.

I am related to John Bennett who married Mary Jane MacGuire on my paternal grandmother's side and George Bennett who married Ann Gould on my maternal Grandmother's side.

Can anyone help?

Trying to search for a Isaac HART and Mary CARRUTHERS. From what little I have found it appears they emigrated to the U.S. around 1818. Census records indicate that Isaac was born in County Armagh, Ireland in 1780. He died in Franklin County, Indiana in 1842. Mary was born in Ireland and died in Franklin County, Indiana on July 19, 1854. That is really all the information I have on these two, other than they supposedly have seven children but I can only find records on three (John, Joseph and George).Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Bob

I am trying to find information about the family of George Woods, born c1895 in Kilmore, Co Armagh. His father was Charles Woods, a publican. George later went to live in Old Trafford, near Manchester, England and was a policeman at the time of his marriage to my aunt, Gertrude Mary Hollins in 1926. They were eventually divorced and George went to live in America, although he returned to England several times and may have settled there. I would like to trace the record of his birth or baptism and to find out if he had any siblings.

After a long search, I have found my Whitten line hits Armagh County and I am very interested in learning and sharing information.

John Whitten died in 1782, I presume in Armagh. His wife was Jane Jamison who was born in 1755. Thier children were Elizabeth, Esther, John, and another daughter. My line follows John, who married Margaret Baggs and was the one coming to the US applying for naturalization in Pittsburgh, PA in 1818. I'd love to hear from anyone with this family connection.

Tynan, Armagh, Ireland LDS 1901 census question

I am hoping that someone might know the answer to this question. I am interested in ordering LDS films of the 1901 census from Tynan, Armagh, Ireland. However, the LDS has four films listed. Since I have been told that Tynan is such a small village, I am confused as to why there would be multiple films. I also am curious about what some of the description might mean. This is what I found in the LDS catalog for films of Tynan:

1901 D.E.D. 8/30-38 - FHL BRITISH Film (808504 Item 1)
1901 D.E.D. 11/18-19 - FHL BRITISH Film (808505 Item 1)
1901 D.E.D. 28/1-30, 31c (file 1-2); 27/15-16 - FHL BRITISH Film (808513)
1901 D.E.D. 29/2-9, 10c, 11-29, 30c - FHL BRITISH Film (8012807 Item 1)

As a side note, the family that I am looking for is the family of Mary Emily GORDON. She was born 10 June 1884 or 1878 in Tynan. I have been told that her father, mother and sister, Jeannie, all died within 6 months of each other when Mary Emily was about 16 years old. Mary Emily had a brother, William, who wanted to continue to work the Cooey or Gordon farm in Tynan. Mary Emily wanted to take her inheritance and move to Australia to live with an aunt and uncle. I was told that she was about 16 at the time, which would have made it sometime between 1894 and 1900.

I was also told that "all of the Gordon's picked up and moved to Australia."

I would sincerely appreciate any help that someone might be able to give me regarding these multiple 1901 Tynan census films.

Betty

Looking for information on a Mary HAMILTON who I believe may have married a WILSON.

Her gf, John HAMILTON, b 1940 in Milford, Kennedies, Lisnadill or Tynan, County Armagh and married Eliza Mary LIVINGSTON / LIVINGSTONE in 1862.

Her father, William HAMILTON, was schoolmaster in Penang, Straits Settlements and her mother's maiden name was McINTYRE. She was likely born in Penang about 1907. She had brothers Fred?, Samuel, William Samuel, Pat and Michael and a son, Michael, and possibly a Richard.

Found a reference of William HAMILTON's grandson, Richard WILSON and wife visiting Penang Free School ~2001 and would like to find them.

Jill from Canada

Ronaghan's in Armagh

Hello, I am currently researching my Ronaghan Clan from Ireland. What I do know was found by a distant cousin who searched records in Ireland, in person, many years ago.

My James Ronaghan had a father by the name of Francis Ronaghan who married a Mary Stuart before 1828 in Ireland. They lived in the County Armagh which borders with Monaghan. They had four children; Patrick, Thomas, James b. 1829, and Martha.

James left home at the age of 16 during the winter when the family discovered that the potatoes they had stored were rotten, abt. 1845. Nothing is known about what has happened to his two older brothers or his sister. We have not been able to find any info beyond this about James life in Ireland...

Does anyone have any info related to Francis and Mary Ronaghan or with their sons Patrick or Thomas or perhaps they have a Martha Ronaghan and who she married but no further info... maybe we could link up and exchange info...

Any clue is worth a dig...

Thanks,

Patti Peters
McShane Connections in Crossmaglen

James McShane (my maternal gggrandfather) b.? and died in 1880 in Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh, N. Ireland. He married Mary/Margaret Bodin on 14 Jul 1799 in Upper Creggan Parish, Crossmaglen. They had the following children: Catherine; Mary; Margaret; Felix (d. 1846 in Cincinnati, OH); James (d. 1869); Frans (1802-1885); Patrick (1810-1895 -- my maternal ggrandfather); and Eleoner (b. 1821).

Patrick McShane (my ggrandfather) married Anne Callaghan on 27 Dec 1855 in Crossmaglen. They had the following children: Mary (b. 1857); James (1859-1930); Margaret (1861-1923); Catherine (1864-1941 -- my grandmother); Ann (1867-1885); Alice (1869-1935); Ellen (1871-1941); Rose (b. 1874); and Bridget (1877-1962).

Catherine McShane (my grandmother) married William Joseph Maher (1863-1945) on 2 Sep 1891 in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. They had the following children: Mary (1892-1952); Ann (1894-1968); Thomas (1896-1968); Michael Joseph (1898-1973 -- my father); Margaret (1901-89); Catherine (1903-64); and
Patrick (1908-1986).

As you can see, there are a number of gaps in the info I have. I have nothing on either the Bodin side or the Callaghan side. I do have the names of a number of the spouses of the above (for example, Callaghan, McArdle, McGinn, Creighton, Hanratty in the 1st group; Grimley, Callaghan, McCreesh, McArdle, Foley, Cunningham, Denegan in the 2nd group; and too many to name here in the 3rd group).

If any of this info registers, please share with me. I have the capability of forwarding gedcom files via email if anyone would prefer.

Thanks, Mike

I began my family tree last year and have traced my great great grandfather - David Sturgeon - to Armagh county. He moved to Canada in the 1890's and ended up in Kincardine, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. Here the Sturgeons were fairly well established having been there since 1825. I have a photograph from the 1930's which shows my great grandfather and what is reported as being about fifty other family members.

I would love to make contact with any Sturgeons still living or previosuly from the Armagh region. Hope to make some connections.

Thanks,

Todd Sturgeon - Ottawa, Canada

I am searching for information on two brothers (maybe more) Allen (b. 1804) and Christopher (b. 1814) both buried at Warkworth, Ontario. Allen's obit says he is from Armagh County, Ireland. His son indicates on the 1901 Canadian census that they migrated in 1832. Allen married a Elizabeth Armstrong from Fermanagh before they came across.
My brick wall starts with Christopher and finding out who their parents were and also finding the ship/port they came over on. Been through a lot of ship lists web site and its hard finding lists for that far back. Sooooo... any info on these two while in Armagh would be greatly appreciated and who knows we may mak a connection between families. Thanx for your time.

In Griffith's Valuation in Portadown, Hugh Slowey is found on Williams Street, Tavanagh, and Elizabeth Davidson is found in the neighboring townland of Corcrain on Marley St. I would like to know the children of Hugh and also those of Elizabeth.
More specifically, did Hugh have a son John or James, possibly my ggf, and did Elizabeth have a daughter, also named Elizabeth, possibly my ggm.

I've looked through public records myself and even hired a researcher in Portadown, all to no use. Can anyone help me?

I am searching for any information on the Irwins of Loughgall, County Armagh. My. ggg-grandfather was Edward Irwin. Edward was born on Sept. 29, 1795 in County Armagh. His parents were supposedly Edward and Ann and he may have had a brother named James. I have located an Edward Irwin on the Flax Growers lists in Loughgall in the township of Cloveneden. The time fram is correct for Edward's father. My ggg-grandfather Edward came to America in 1813-1815 and settled in Pennsylvania and the on to Ohio and Missouri. Does anyone have any information on the Irwins of Loughgall? Other surnames that may be connected are Alexander, Ashton, and Knox.

Hi Joy,
I have very little information on my John McNeely. They seem to be born about the same time, 1798. He had married Ellenor Mathison who died in 1846. According to the 1851 Census he was a Presbyterian, a farmer, living in a log house in Div. 2, Conc,. 7, Lot 1 in Battersea, Storrington Twp, Ontario. He may have had more children but I know of only two - Ellenor McNeely who married William Shannon and John McNeely who married Sarah Stinson.

So far, it sounds as though they are two different people, but who knows ...... ?

Esther
