You could try BT telephone listings for Roper (Kelly) being a more common name or www.eirecomphonebook.ie. Then if there aren't too many you could write to the addresses shown. You could try other counties than Fermanagh as that came up with 0.

In the 1911 Census only 3 Roper households in Fermanagh.
Catherine, Corngrade, Enniskillen Rural, domestic servant, widow age 38 (large household, hotel/ Matron and Porters, perhaps a hospital)

www.familysearch.org's - PILOT, under search records with give you births/deaths of Roper's and counties.

a record in 1950 of a birth of a James G. Roper to parents McCaffery (mother's maiden name?) Ballyshannon Registration District, this person would probably still be living.

Sarah and Nellie on Strand St. Enniskillen North.Sarah 45 widow, born India and housekeeper, Nellie 16 Nurse/domestic servant, born Fermanagh. Nellie probably married and name changed.

www.nationalarchives.ie a check of just Roper, no names or counties gave up a list of many Roper's in Ireland.

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'

No relation but the Code family moved from s.w. Wicklow to Lanark Co. Upper Canada 1818-1832, some settling in Perth/Charleton. They moved for a variety of reasons land grants of 100 acres, unrest from 1798 still prevailed, relatives, neighbours and friends moved with them or shortly after. Large Estates were downsizing the number of tenants due to taxes and some actively encouraged immigration. Some landlords helping pay for expenses, some landlords just evicting. The earkt effects of the 1846 Famine were felt long before the famine really took hold. I have some letters/documents from an Estate Manager in the late 1820's commenting on crop failures and large groups of people walking and looking for food and work.

Have you tried the website www.granniesgenealogygarden.com for early census 1820's.

www.theshipslist.come also has some very early records, the ships came to Quebec then steamships then took passengers from Quebec to Montreal and then to Upper Canada. There was a Margaret and William Main 1815 to New Brunswick, Robert Mains July 25, 1825, Daniel Mains Sept. 1833 and probably more but these lists are still being transcribed.

I was only able to find one 1824 tithe for James Mains, Drumkeeran Parish, Corrocrophery Townland but Tithe records are sparce on the internet. There are some parish records
www.censusfinder.com and www.igp-web.com has other information. If you are trying to establish relationship cemetary inscriptions can be valuable.

By Aug. 1862 the Griffiths Valuation for Fermanagh had only two Maine's (sp) left in Fermanagh Catherine Parish Clones, Clonatty Towland and Thomas, Parish Clones, Lisrace.

1851 Westminster Township, Middlesex Co. Census David age 58, Farmer, Con 1, Lot 21 (early census usually only had head of family)

1851 Warwick Township Agricultural Census, lambton, Ontario
John Main Con 4, Lot 6

1851, Upper Canada, James born Ireland abt 1820, age 32 wife Jan age 25, Margrett 7, Anne Jane 1;
1881 James Mains 70, wife Jane 55, Noable 24, Margarett 23, William 19, Barbara 16, Amanda 12.

1871 James Mains age 65 born abt 1805/6 Simcoe North, Vespra

Death James Mains 28 Nov. 1880, Simcoe age 75, est.born 1806, Church of England, died of old age, illness 1 yr. in duration, registered by Mary Jane Mains, Widow, #014463

Death James Mains 27 Sept 1882 age 70 yr. born est 1812,
Yeoman, Co. Father Joseph Mains, Clogher, Ireland.

You probably have most of that already. There is only one for sure way the find Irish baptism/birth records is to visit the Church of Ireland, Representative Library which has Protestant records prior to 1899 in Dublin or National Library. Have you tried www.familysearch.org and its new PILOT program under 'search records'?

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'

Did the family stay in Ireland? The birth of Matthew James is probably Jan-March 1902, Lisnaskea Registration District, Fermanagh. However, unlikely he would be alive today. This was on the PILOT program of the Latter Day Saints www.familysearch.org - see top left corner, click on 'search records' and scross down to PILOT. After that it is pretty self explanatory. The records go as far as 1950's and if Matthew married it would of been around
1922-25 and children following fairly soon there after.
The US has census too 1930 whereas Canada and the UK - 100 year 1911 is the most recent and you have that already.

Unless someone looking for the same family it is hard to find people today. The most important thing to do while waiting for this is to make sure your address stays up to date on the message board. There are no Thompson's in the Fermanagh phone book at this time.

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'

Three spellings are used by the Latter Day Saints Civil Registrations: Sherry, McSherry, McSharry

Patt, Miles,Patrick, Edward, Hugh and Peter are the father's in the 1864-75 records and the children would be at least 35-40 years from the Tithe's and those people would of been adults leasing land. Est. of birth 1800 you can probably find records of death on the Latter Day Saints website below.

The children's names were Patrick, Thomas, Eliza, Francis, Catherine, Margaret Anne, Margaret Jane, Mary Jane, James Thomas.

The Latter Day Saints website www.familysearch.org has records from some counties covering many years, plus a new PILOT found under 'search records' for the years to 1950's.
Estimate from age at death give an approximate year of birth. These microfilm can be seen at your closest Heritage Center, see main page, phone first and reserve if necessary.

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'

No relation. You might try www.censusfinder.com + United Kingdom+Ireland+Fermanagh, there are some parish records there. Generally unless someone else has researched the family there isn't a lot online, most Parish records need to be searched in person whether at the National Library, National Archives or in the parish. Most C of I records prior to 1899 are kept in one place in Dublin, the Representative Church Library, after 1899 in local custody.
If you can find gravestone inscriptions you maybe able to make family connections try www.igp-web.com + Fermanagh.
In Griffiths Valuations much later 1850-60's sometimes they will have a Sr.and a Jr. which helps somewhat. Also if say there are two persons with the same nameeg: George and George, both could be one person with two properties as often the size of one wasn't big enough to farm effectively.

The Civil Registration of bmd's commenced in 1864 and records for Fermanagh online start at that date, so the 1834 names won't necessarily be obvious as there would be two generations between the dates.

There were 9 James Sherry's born after 1864, John McSherr 1865, 1866, 1914 and John Patrick Sherry 1882. William 1876, 1885, 1909, In total 77 Sherry's 41 baptisms, 41 marriages commencing 1852 - this would be Church of Ireland records before the 1864 - all/any denominations.

www.familysearch.org maybe of help, and their new PILOT can be helpful. Pilot is found under 'search records' top left main page - pull down menu to PILOT, enter information, the only problem with this site is parents name are not always given. So you need to see the microfilm, phone your nearest LDS Heritage Center to order film before visiting. Locations on main page.

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'

Thanks for posting Mike. I didn't have William Waugh (d.1822) in my tree, it's nice to add another generation! Another researcher told me he believed the Waughs came to Ireland from around Langholm in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, although I've no way of verifying this.

Do you have any further leads on Ann Armstrong? There are a lot of Armstrongs in the area around Ann's time, but I can't connect any of them.

The same goes for John Lindsay and Mary Gardner (Jane Lindsay's parents). I haven't been able to connect them with anyone else, although they probably also had roots somewhere in Scotland.

That's all I have for now - keep in touch!

Phil

Phil
Came upon your query by shear chance while wasting time on internet
The William Waugh you mention is also my great great grandfather
According to my family records he was born in 1810 in Ratoran, Enniskillen, Fermanagh and died in Long gully in 1897(nov 21).
His father also William Waugh was born about 1790 and died in 1873 in Ireland. His father also William Waugh died in 1822. The Waughs were Presbyterians aqnd these names are from the church registers at Armagh.
The children of William and Jane Lindsay were John Waugh b 1832, Anne Waugh b 1834, William Waugh b 1838 (my ancestor)Mary Lindsay waugh b 1840, and Isabella b 1843. All were born in Ratoran, Enniskillen fermanagh Northern Ireland.
Research by family members indicate no Waughs in the derryCo register of the 1600s pointing to their arrival in Ireland in the 1700s
Jane Lindsay was born in Ireland according to family records.
Would also love to know more about the Ireland connections and hope you will pass on any new details you find.
A useful book is "Bendigo and its Environs The way it Was by Ken Arnold which has many details of the Waughs in this area.
regards
Mike Waugh

Norma, I will try again and hope this note does not disappeear into the ether. I think you are onto something. Your timeslines are right but I did not know of a Kennedy or Rutherford connection. Your description of the property acquisitions also fits with my information. I have stood at the very grave you referred to in MacGuire's Bridge. IT may be that Mary was a Kennedy. I checked through notes from a discussion with my grandfather but there is nothing there to indicate Mary's maiden name. Charlie Somers and his brother Francis (Frank) came to Toronto before 1850 and were not famine refugees. In the first generation they established businesses and owned property in Toronto. They were politically "connected" and active in the Orange Lodge. You might want to look for patterns in the use of first names. The common ones that have remained in use into my generation are Frank, Charles, James and Joseph. My great grandfather (Joseph) lived until I was in university and I remember his older sister Maude who remained single and took care of the emigre Charles until he died. He had another brother James who came from Macguire's a bit later and served as City Clerk of Toronto for about 50 years and was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire). Charles married a Canadian named Anne Livingston`and they had 6 children, Maude, Walter (neither had children, Frank (one son Murray), Joseph (my great grandfather - three children), CHarlie (unmarried)and Jim (one son, Donald). Please feel free to reply directly to me university email Richard.Sullivan@ubc.ca

Dear Richard,
I was so pleased to see your message last week, and apologise for not getting back to you immediately. I am in the last throes before publication of a memoir on my husband and hope to get to the printers early next week - after which I can turn my attention to all the other things that have been side-lined for months!!
While a research contact in Ireland is encouraging me to follow up the Fermanagh connection I am not completely convinced it relates to my grandfather's family - but in the absence of other possibilities I am willing to go along with it until it becomes obvious one way or another!
My GF's name was Frederick Rutherford SOMERS,possibly born 1st April 1845. He gave varying ages at different mileposts in his life but his age at death would indicate 1845. I know nothing of the family (he died in India 1925) and I wasn't born until 1932, but recall my father saying that his father had brothers and sisters, so would be interesting to know from you what their names might have been. Perhaps chasing them might turn up the lead I need to decide one way or another. FKS is said to have come from Dumfries, and I believe there was a large number of Rutherfords (or was it Kennedys?) there, so if I could just get one certificate with a name, I'd be on to something! I'd be happy to collaborate if I find anything of mutual interest. Do you have details of others of that generation?
Thank you for making contact, Regards, Norma Curnow.(I used Pamela initially - my middle name.)

I am a Somers on my mothers side and a direct descendant of the James and Mary Somers of MaGuires Bridge. I have been there and have seen the gravestone erected to Mary by her emigre sons Charles and Francis. Charles was my great great grandfather. The two sons settled in Toronto and descendants include the composer Harry Somers who died a few years ago. The family did well in Toronto and a decendant, James Somers, received the OBE for service to the Empire, having served as City Clerk of Toronto for 60 years (this in the 1930's I believe). The family was, like many Ulster protestant families, culturally as much Scots as Irish. In Canada they were members of the Orange Lodge. Subsequent generations produced few sons and the last Charles Somer (my grandfather died about 25 years agao. His only son, Paul, did last year. THe latters two sons were adopted. Pamela, I can check some family notes for more info on the brothers in Canada, but I am afraid I have no information going back further than James and Mary.
Richard

My dad Algie (Joseph Jnr's grandson)was a lot older than my mum and served in WW2 although he didn't have to (over 35), but volunteered and was injured twice seriously. He died when I was 7. Have you ever heard of 'Records of the Slacke Family in Ireland'? I could email it if you don't have. Would be good to hear back.
Hannah Jane Slack

Hi Suzanne,

Here is some information on Humphreys in Fermanagh. First, the 1862 Griffiths evaluation lists one Christopher in Cullaghmore and another in Drumhoney. Note that there is also a Royal in Cullaghmore, indicating close relation to my Keys ancestor. In a letter from about 1831, Royal Keys mentions uncles Christopher and William Humphreys of Crevenish.

Humpheries	Christopher	Derryvullan	Cullaghmore
Humpheries	Johnston	Magheraculmoney	Drumbane
Humpheries	Johnston	Magheraculmoney	Drumreane
Humpheries	Royal	Derryvullan	Cullaghmore
Humphrey	Charles	Aghalurcher	Cornakessagh
Humphrey	Denis	Devenish	Levally Lower
Humphreys	Francis	Kinawley	Kinawley
Humphreys	John	Kinawley	Kinawley
Humphreys	John	Magheraculmoney	Kesh
Humphreys	John, Jr.	Drumkeeran	Rossgole
Humphreys	John, Sr.	Drumkeeran	Rossgole
Humphreys	Patrick	Derryvullan	Drogan
Humphreys	Patrick	Derryvullan	Druminshinardagh
Humphreys	Robert	Kinawley	Kinawley
Humphreys	Thomas	Magheraculmoney	Kesh
Humphries	Anne	Derryvullan	Carranboy
Humphries	Bernard	Magheraculmoney	Ardvarny West
Humphries	Charles	Derryvullan	Drumshane (Lisnarick)
Humphries	Charlotte	Derryvullan	Coolisk
Humphries	Christopher	Magheraculmoney	Drumhoney
Humphries	Christr.
My ancestor Royal Keys from County Fermanagh (Coolaness, Derryvullan North) emigrated to Canada and settled in Marmora, Ontario in 1831. There was already at least one Keys family in Ontario at the time. Royal was the son of Hugh Keys and Dorothy Humphreys of Drumard, which had been in the Humphreys family for several generations. There is a great deal of information on the Humphreys family in Fermanagh.

Roy

I just read your post and you have been in touch with my daughter Cathy Grain. I have found my grandmother's birth certificate and her parents were Edward Humphries, born in Pettigo and Elizabeth Tumath. My grandmother was Elizabeth Cataherine born 1885. They came to Canada in 1901 and lived in Portage la Prairie. Grandma's mother died when she was about 2 years old. Her father remarried. They ran a boarding house in Portage and her step-mother was a seamstress. I would appreciate hearing from you as to how we are related.
Diane

I believe that my great, great great grandfather George Graham was born in Fermanagh but moved with his parents James and Jane (nee Thomson)and his siblings to Stonehouse, Lanarkshire. Sometime before 1874. In 1874 George and his wife Sydney Thomson marries in Stonehouse. I believe however, that Sydney was also from Ireland (don't know where, though). James Graham parents were George Graham and Nancy Spiers, James were Alexander Thomson and Catherine Bruce and Sydney's parent were John Thomson and Dorothea (I think) Johnstone.

Does anyone know of the Graham and Thomson families?

PS I'm also posting this in the Surnames list.

Hi,
God only knows why they came here! They weren't farmers, so they didn't come for the great farm steading opportunities! Again, I'll see if my Mom knows anything when she gets home. My Grandma spoke highly of her grandfather. I believe he was a business man in Portage la Prairie. I would guess that one hearty soul travelled over and the rest followed. I know that my Grandma had her Uncle Ed's journal of his voyage over from the Old Country. I'm not sure where that went, but I thought it was rather interesting.

We know some Humphreys in our town that are no direct relation to us that we know of anyway. The next time we see them, I will have to ask them where their family came from exactly. Maybe they are related to you.

I have read your previous entries, and you mention that Irvinestown is not a large community, and that they were all descended from one man. In that case, if we go back far enough, we would have common ancestry. This is very cool, as we have traced the Squair family roots back a long way, but did not have as much success with Grandma's (Irvina, named after Irinestown) family history. Thank you!

Either my Mother, Diane Granger or myself will post more next week.
Cathy

Hello,
I was happy to receive your post. I phoned my Mom to ask her what my gg grandfather's name was, and she replied "Grandpa Humphreys". :)

She will be back in town next week though and she has a copy of g grandma's birth certificate. I will be able to get back to you re: his name. My g grandmother came with her family, except for one sister that remained in Ireland. My Mom has that info too.

My g grandmother, Elizabeth Catherine Humphreys, married Thompson Isaiah (sp?) Ethelbert Rutledge. How's that for a handle? His family was also originally from Ireland and had immigrated to Portage la Prairie Canada.

I'll post more next week.
Cathy

Owen Patrick Doonan/Helen Gallagher

Looking for information about Owen Patrick Doonan who lived from about 1755 to ? and Helene Gallagher who was born about 1860. He is reported to have been born in Ballyshannon, Donegal, and she in Fermanagh. He is also reported to have married Mary Rogers. He had the following children: Margaret; Susan, Mary, Nellie (Eleanor), Owen Jr. Catherine, John (Jack) and Mary Ellen. All of the children immigrated to the St. Sylvestre area of Quebec in the mid 1800s. We are trying to identify where in either Donegal or Fermanagh these Doonans lived. The children were all reported born in Fermanagh. Can anymore shed iight or point us in the right direction?
