Hello,

I am trying to locate any information on Michael Leahy, b. 1876, and John Leahy, b. 1879, in Killorglin Parish. Their parents (Michael Leahy and Catherine Moriarty) emigrated in the early 1880's, and I believe these two brothers stayed behind. I do not know where they might have gone. If anyone has any information that could help me, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,

Joe

Where the Wade family came from?

Hi

I'm trying to know where my family name came from?
and where the Wade settle in ireland. My first ancestor who left the country was Michael Wade. He supoosed to came aboard a timber ship going back to Canada (New Brunswick in the miramichi area) in 1834-37. Michael Was married to Margaret Walsh. Margaret had a sister named Bridget and on her death notice its says that she came from Kilkenny.

I was told by the Genealogical center of Kilkenny (Rothe House) that there was plenty of Walsh there but no Wade. The eldest people in NB told me that we were called the Kilarneys...

So if someone can help me to get some hints on where the Wade are from or get in touch with some Wade family in Ireland will be helpful

Thank you very much
I am looking for any family info or info on when he arrived in the U.S. I remember a few stories about his father, Gerald (I think). He married my grandmother, Kathleen (Kate Rose) Leddy in 1934. Any help on where I can locate birth records, baptism records for either family would be appreciated!

I am joining this group as my mother-in-law was Sarah Langford, daughter of Michael Langford's second wife Mary Knightly. We are interested in any information of this family and especially any photographs. We visited the area in the 1990s with my mother in law and met many people but none had photographs of the Knightlys or Langfords, so my husband has never seen photographs of his grandfather or his mother's step siblings. Any photographs of Langfords or Knightleys would be of interest.

Please get in touch if you have anything which may be of interest.

Hello,

We have in our possession a school photograph showing a group of school boys with their two male teachers standing at each side. One of the boys holds a plaque which says 'Drumclough 1910'. The teachers are Mr Cussen and Mr Beasley. Mr Cussen (John or Edward (Ned)?) is supposed to have set up the first school in Finuge near Listowel. It is possible that he married Jane Buckley who might have had a sister Hannah Buckley. His father was possibly from Tipperary. Mr Cussen's daughter Bridie married William Joy.

I would be grateful to hear from anyone who knows about the school. I am keen to trace the family history of the Cussen's, Joy's, Buckley's, Woulfe's. Part of the family is supposed to have emigrated to USA. A John Cussen of Tipperary who was the 1st cousin of Bridie.

Rachel Joy

my forbears

My name is John Francis Joseph Fitzgerald and I live in Melbourne Australia. My Father was Gerald Bede Fitzgerald and also born in Australia. My Grandfather was Thomas Fitzgerald and was born in Co. Kerry in 1858 he came to Australia in 1878 at the age of 20 years.

Thomas Fitzgerald, my grandfather, was the son of Robert Fitzgerald and Johanna Fitzgerald (nee Herlihy) from Co.Kerry Ireland.

My Grandfather’s house in Australia was called “Brandon” and the story around the family was that is was so named because that is where he was born.

Other information we have been able to obtain includes all of the information from public records in Australia, marriage and death certificates etc. these records all confirm that Thomas was indeed born in Co. Kerry but not the area or townland etc. Amongst the antidotal information was some family information such that it was thought that Grandfather was born near where the film “Ryan’s Daughter” was made.

A little further digging and I found a reference to a Robert Fitzgerald in the Griffiths Valuation of 1851-52 and a Religious Census of 1834. That reference puts this Robert Fitzgerald as the head of a household in the Parish of Kilmalkedar in the Townland of Lateevemanagh. This is not far from where there is a plaque to the makers of the film.

If there is any one out there that knows anything of the Fitzgerald or Herlihys from around Dingle or elsewhere in Kerry I would be greatfull to hear from you.

John Fitzgerald

email john.fitzgerald@mbox.com.au

OR

fitzgerald_j@hotmail.com
KERR .. 4 Siblings, born 1795 to 1803, who are parents?

Hello, For unknown reasons, information on my KERR ancestors "fell into my lap" this spring. Living in New England, we only had the very basic information on our line of Kerr men. Patrick Kerr had come from Ireland to Canada around 1825 with 3 siblings. Three of them were married with children. They were Mary Kerr, b1795, Patrick Kerr, b1797, Elizabeth Kerr, b1801, and John Kerr, b.1803. Once they arrived in Quebec Province, the second sister married, and they all had many children. Both Mary Kerr and John Kerr had married into the Henderson family. .... As it turns out, there were ..hundreds.. of both Kerr's and Henderson's in Eastern Canada in the 1800's, and, as a result, many inter-marriages. Of all the people researching these Kerr families, no one has yet found out the names of the parents of Mary, Patrick, Elizabeth, and John. ... We have found a page in a booklet which tells that the family originally came from .... County Kenny. Obviously this is a typo. But, we don't know if it was supposed to be .. County Kerry, or County Kilkenny. ... We would appreciate any information at all .. about this Kerr family.

I have just received a letter from the parish clerk,
Thomas Dowling, at Ballymacelligott Catholic Parish.
There are no church records for my family there. My Thomas
and Ellen Griffin immigrated in 1845 to Syracuse, New York. Records in Ballymacelligot don’t begin until 1868. Thomas and Ellen married and
lived in Tursillagh during the first year of their marriage,
and I have assumed that one or both of them
were probably born in Tursillage.

I will check in Tralee Parish next. I understand that
part of Tursillage lies within that parish.

Thomas Dowling, has suggested that there may be
some records at St. Columbanus Hospital in Killarney.
Has anybody else tried that?

Connie Griffin Bennett
TrickieW@aol.com
She came to the U.S. in 1908 aboard the Adriatic and was traveling with brother Thomas J. Murphy. They settled in Butte Montana where she married John McCoy. I know she died July 25th 1931 from her death record but it fails to list her exact birth date and place of orgin in Ireland hence I am at a dead end.
KERR families in late 1700's

Hello. I'm interested in finding out if there were KERR families in County Kerry in the late 1700's. In particular I'm trying to find out if my ancestors, Patrick KERR and Elizabeth (KERR?), were born in County Kerry, instead of County Sligo, ~1790-1800.

They were part of a family-group of related KERR's and HENDERSON's who left Sligo-Town in 1820's to migrate to Canada. The group settled in the Province of Quebec.

Many researchers have searched for many years for the parents of the KERR's in the family-group, and no one has been successful. But, they concentrated on County Sligo. Someone has reminded me recently that one descendant of Patrick said they came from County Kerry.

I'm just typing up a few short queries today, and will follow up on this thought in January.

(Lots of information on Co. Sligo List.)

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

Hi – I am looking for information on Michael and Mary (nee Connell) Galvin [or Galivan] from Co. Kerry. They had a son Michael and possibly a daughter Honora. Michael Jr was born in Ireland in the vicinity of 1855, lived in Cincinnati Ohio where he married Mary Burns and ultimately settled in Chicago [West Town, on Sholto St]. They had many children, and surviving were James, Bessie, John, William, Helen, Lauretta and Nora/Norine. Michael Jr may have immigrated with his parents, possibly to Washington D.C.

Nora Galvin/Galivan, who I think is Michael Jr’s sister but could be his aunt or a cousin, was born in Kerry around 1845. She married Jeremiah O’Brien around 1868 probably in Washington D.C. and ultimately settled in Chicago on Blue Island Ave where they raised 6 kids -- John (born in Wash DC), James, Margaret, Elizabeth, Anna and Robert.

Thanks for any information, especially townland for Michael and Mary and relation between Michael Jr and Honora.
I am looking for baptisim record for my great-grandfather born c 1831 County Kerry.
Is there any hope of getting Roman Catholic Birth, Marriage, or Death records for the early to late 1800s. Does any Catholic parish Church or Civil parish in Ireland hold such early records or would they be held in Archives anywhere? Or does such early records exist?

I am looking for information on my GGGrandparents Michael John Scannell and Catherine Murphy Scannell O'Neil. Family information indicates that this Scannell Family came from the area of 30 miles West of Cork and about 30 miles east of Killarney - located between the Blackwater River and the River Lee. Does anyone know what location this would be? Another Family Source indicates that one of their Children was born in Tralee. Michael John Scannell was born abt 1803. Catherine was born abt 1807. Family stories indicates that there were two Scannell Brothers that married Murphy Girls. One of Michael's Brothers was Joseph Scannell. Catherine had twin brothers by the name of Martin & Maurice. Michael John's and Catherine's children were: Timothy, John, Catherine, Maurice, Maurice, Margaret, Michael and Bridget. All born in Ireland. This family immigrated to the US and settled in NY>IL>WI>NB. Family info indicates that the Scannell's had friends and relatives by the surnames of O'Neill, Sullivan and Bara. Catherine Murphy Scannell was related to the O'Brien's of County Limerick.

Glenflesk RC Parish, Barony of Magunihy - The pre-formation parish of Glenflesk, called the Parish of Killaha, lists Glounlea as one of its townlands. I can find no trace of the townland of Glounlea in this area now. There is a Glounlea, near Currow, but this is not in Killaha and is in a different Barony also. Is this one and the same place?

This may be a pretty big leap; however, my great-grandfather Michael Brosnan (Brosnahan) was born between 1861-1863 in Banoge, County Kerry. According to his New Hampshire, (US marriage and death records, his father was Timothy Brosnan and his mother Mary ??. Sadly Michael died in November 1886 in Newmarket,NH when he was 25 and his only child, Mary (my grandmother) was 8 months old. Your Timothy is of an age to be Michael's brother.
I know that Michael had at least one sibling (name unknown) because my grandmother (Michael's daughter) was sent back to Brosnan grandparents in Kerry when her mother, Katherine Galvin (b. Aglish, Minard, 1861)died in Dec 1898 in Lawrence, MA. There she met her cousin, Kate Brosnan. From pictures of my grandmother's US wedding in 1909, Kate and my grandmother look very similar in age.
My Brosnan line is what inspired my passion for genealogy and is also my greatest brick wall. Any information would be wonderful.

Posting of family tree for some Leahy's from Killorglin Parish, includind emigrants to the U.S.

I have assembled a family tree for a branch of the Leahy's from Killorglin Parish, some of whom emigrated to the U.S. in the 1850's to 1880's. The tree is posted at this website:

http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/articles/art...

Please contact me for additions, corrections, or communications. I have not had much luck with the early records, and would appreciate any assistance that anyone could give. I'd especially like to hear from anyone who ties into this tree.

Note that the tree includes individuals from the Curran, Flynn, Griffin, Hayes, Herlihy, Hurley, Mahoney, Moriarty, and Sullivan families, most of whom appear to be from Killorglin Parish as well.

Thanks,

Joe

Dennis/Owen Ryle

Hi listers -

When my ggg-grandfather, John Ryle, died in the US in 1/1884 at the age of 100 years, and his wife, Ellen Connors Ryle, died in the US in 1/1892, they left behind 9 children: 2 daughters and 7 sons. According to family oral history, one of the sons (Dennis/Owen) stayed in Ireland, but he seems to have vanished into thin air. According to his sister, Mary's, obit, he was still alive as late as 3/1914. The only info I have to go on is: John Ryle was born in the Parish of Ballyduff in 1783, and a neighbor who lived on an adjoining farm was named Martin Flaherty. Martin Flaherty's daughter, Elizabeth, married John Ryle's son, John, in Calif in the 1860's. I'm not having any luck tracing the name of Ryle in County Kerry in the 19th century (I think it might have originally been Riley and changed to Ryle when they got to the States.) I'm really hoping there is a descendent of Dennis Ryle out there looking for the rest of his/her family.

Any research advice/help will be greatly appreciated.

Nellie

Brosnan for Diane

If your Brosnan was baptised in Saint John's Tralee
RC, then he would have to been living in that parish.
(mainly the town of Tralee)

If for example he came from Castleisland, it is in that parish that his baptism would have taken place.
So if you know for sure he was baptised in Tralee,

why not write to the parish of
Saint John's Church
Castle Street
Tralee,

and see if they have his baptism record. His address would be on it.
Maureen Miller is the very helpful lady there in charge of the parish record look ups. Enclosing a donation might help to further your search.

There are no census prior to 1901.
Brosnan is quite a common surname in Kerry. there were 264 Brosnan families living there in 1901.
There were approx 25 families living in the town of Tralee itself., in 1901. The rest spread all over Kerry.

You need more information, It would be like looking for a needle in a haystack without more clues as to where in Kerry he actually came from.

Looking for information on my gg grandparents Patrick Brosnan and Bridget Shea Brosnan, married in 1839 at the Currow Roman Catholic Church in County Kerry Ireland. Children were:Denis Brosnahan born c 1844, Patrick Brosnan born 1850, Mary Brosnahan Connor (Mrs.Tim Connor) born 1847, and Matthew Brosnahan born 1852. All children emigrated to Pennsylvania between 1866-1882. Denis was born in Ranaleen; the other children were baptised at the Currow Roman Catholic church. And does anyone know why these siblings used the various spellings of their surname Brosnan vs Brosnahan? Thank you.

We just returned from DERRYNANE (CAHERDANIEL) and wanted to share with others all that we found about Bill's mother's family. Please contact us if you are researching this area and/or families. We had done a lot of research and brought every name, townland and date we had found. Bridget in FL had found the first Irish baptism which got us started a little over a year ago.

We stayed at the Derrynane Hotel which was worth the trip in itself. Splendid view, lovely accomodations and terrific meals. The people there guided us to the townlands we were looking for and one woman turned out to be Bill's cousin.

The first we found was the family of Bill's g-grandmother, JULIA FITZGERALD who married THOMAS BRENNAN, JAN. 26, 1864 at DERRYNANE ABBEY (which is the chapel attached to Daniel O-Connell's home--he ruins of the ABBEY are nearby). Across the road from 3,000 year old STAIGUE FORT we found NED NEDDY who said, "Yes, JULIA was my grandfather's, also EDMUND)sister." He then took us up through the sheep pastures to the ruins of the house where JULIA was born... a moving experience.

With the help of others in the area we found the ruins of the house of MARTIN BRENNAN (GOWLANES) (Bill's g-g-grandfather) and the homestead of his wife, ELLEN SULLIVAN (GOWLANES).

All the families recognized who Bill was and welcomed us with open arms and showered us with family momentos. It was just incredible and we returned to Mexico with our notebook full of names and stories.

By the way, last year Bill reclaimed his Irish citizenship after Patty started doing some genealogical work on his family in Waterbury, CT.

Searching Sneem for Shea

My great-great-grandfather, Timothy SHEA/O'SHEA, became a naturalized US citizen in Indiana in 1852, age 33. His naturalization applications notes that he emigrated from Sneem, County Kerry (possibly via Cork to Boston in 1850, according to other clues not yet confirmed). His siblings may or may not include: James, John, Michael and Bridget, based on fact Bridget SHEA died 12 March 1895, Putnam Co., Indiana, age 78. His daughter, Mary E(lizabeth?) SHEA, born June 1857 in Bainbridge, Putnam Co., Indiana, m. Eugene S. WALKER. He was superintendent of railroads in late 1800s near Chicago. She died in 1934 in California, USA.

When I visited Sneem two years ago, I didn't know where my Irish roots led. Can anyone help me find my ancestors?

My Murphy's are all from Knocknagoshel (ALL the Murphy's in Knocknagoshel are related), but originally the family came from Castleisland (Tim Murphy). The Lane's (Leane) are from Brosna. Keane, Hickey, Downey, O'Connor, and Ahern's are from Knocknagoshel. I believe the Curtin line came from Rockchapel in Cork. Anyone out there with Knocknagoshel, Brosna, or Mt. Collins roots that wants to exchange info?
Reardon family, Tralee, and the O'Connells

Hello: I am trying to trace the connection between my GGgrandfather Michael Henry Reardon, born Cork 1804, and the Sugrue and O'Connell families. There was a prominent doctor John O'Reardon who was a first cousin and physician of Daniel O'Connell, but I have so far been unable to get any further. Michael moved to Tralee and there married Sarah Dyer. Family stories have him as a founding member of the Young Ireland Party; he later came to America, supposedly with a bounty on his head from the English government. I know there was a Thomas O'Reardon of Killareny who married Mary (Sugrue? Walsh?) and had 2 sons, one of whom was Dr. O'Reardon and the other of whom was Stephen O'Reardon. In Mary's obituary of 15 April, 1842, it is stated that she was sister of the late Bishop of Kerry and cousin-german of the Mayor of Dublin (Daniel O'Connell). Michael Reardon's father was said to be another Michael Reardon and his mother was said to have been a Catherine O'Callaghan. Any and all help much appreciated! Michael Haines
.

Denis Nolan Kerry/Cork 1940's

Im trying to find more information on my grandfather and relevant family - unfortunately he died when my dad was approximately 4 years of age between 1943 and 1948. It stated on my dads (Michael Nolan) birth certificate he was from Knockawaddera which only reference was in SW Cork but only place now that still exists is spelt Knockawaddra. He was a labourer and is known that he hung himself. It is said he was only young when he killed himself probably between the ages of 20 and 30.

He married my Nan Margaret O'Connor who was originally from Gneevguilla - marriage date unknown. My Dad was born in Meenganaire, Knocknagoshel (closest big town was CastleIsland) along with my uncle John. It states however that the births and deaths registry that is on the Certificate is Killarney number 453 With WM Prendiville being the registrar.

It is known he had a brother Andy or Andrew Nolan who had a daughter Jane who is now living in the USA - am currently trying to get a copy of her birth certificate to trace her parents and possibly work back from that.

My Nan - Margaret Nolan then went on to marry a Jeremiah Cremins after that - anywhere after the death of my grandfather and had approximately another 6 children. They lived in Meenganaire with his death in approximately 1992, she died now only 2 years ago at the age of 93.

Unfortunately that is all the information I have as my nan did not like to recall any stories of my grandfather and didnt really remember much information. If anyone could help me retrace I would be very grateful.

Thanks,
Mike Nolan.

Looking for Killarney, Kerry County Cournane or Courtney family ancestors

Jeremiah Cournane and Hannah Spillane remained in Killarney with one daughter, Johanna. Two of their sons immigrated to Worcester MA before 1900. I would like to make contact with other Courtney/ Cournane researchers to see what else we can pull together about this family and see if someone can help me find a cemetery there that this Courtney family is buried in. Thanks,
Shannon (McQuaid) COURTNEY

Downing, Julia

Looking for any information on Julia Downing born in Knockbrack, County Kerry Ireland. We are guessing August of either 1831 or 1821. We think that she went to New York as a very young girl and then went to Iowa to marry a French man in 1868. His name was Frances Kimm, actually from Germany. Julia was about 15 years younger then "Frank", they had three children. They moved to Blue Earth County, Minnesota where they each owned pieces of land. From the stories she came alone worked as a maid, we are guessing that there was some correspondence between her and Frank (possible with the help of the local parish priest). There was some family rift so much has been lost. Any information would be appreciated. Mary
