Butler Ancestors from Kilkenny

I am searching for any kind of information I can receive on the BUTLER ancestry from Kilkenny. The earliest record I have is from Thomas Butle b. 1674, married Elizabeth Abbot of Dover New Hampshire, moved to Kittery, later to South Berwick, Maine. It is said that he was part of the House of Ormonde. The next record I have is from James Butler, Kilkenny Castle b. 1703 3rd Earl of Ormonde, who bought the castle from William le Mareschal's descendants. Any help would be gladly appreciated.

I am looking for any information I can find on the origin of the Williams Family of Kilkenny Ireland. According to microfilm records for the Roman Catholic Parish of Clara, James Patrick WILLIAMS (my gggreat-grandfather) was married to a Ellen Brennan on February 6, 1826. I think James' parents names were John and Ellen (NASH) WILLIAMS but I am not sure. I believe James had two sisters and two brothers Margaret (married a Michael or James PHELAN), Mary (married James MURPHY), Christopher, and Joseph. I have no info on the brothers.
Any information on this Williams family would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. A. Williams
seeking any additional information/confirmation regarding the following:

William M. Shea (another source lists him as William W. O'Shae), born around August 1837 in Callan (whether this is the parish or the town, I don't know). Other sources range his birth year from 1833-1837. Parents unknown. Emigrated to USA prior to 1860, when he is found as a farmer in St. Louis, Missouri. Died 1907 Iowa.

William was married about 1856 in St. Louis to Mary McCormick (sometimes listed as Cormack). Mary also supposedly born in Callan around January 1839. Other sources range her birth year 1836-1837.

Mary's father's name is supposedly Thomas McCormick/Cormack. It is not clear if Thomas immigrated as well.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi there,
Does anyone have any info about John Bradley b.12/8/1806 died 24/10/1849 in Ceylon? All I know was that he was born in Kilkenny. He was ensigned in to the 16th Regt of Foot (Infantry?) and in 1842 was transferred to the Court of St James in the 5th Regt of Her Majesty. He was later in the Ceylon Rifles.

It has been suggested that his father may have been called Willy and his mother's surname was Bayley.

I would be most grateful for any leads. Thank you.

Silvana

I have put the photographs taken at a number of Kilkenny graveyards other than Ballyfoyle.

They are now on line at the following URL's and there will be some more next week....

The Ballyhale photographs have been on my Graveyard blog site as well as some others, this new set has had some names of photographs changed and includes an index to the names of all the people with years of death when I could read them from the original photographs. I'm hoping that the index to names which has only been created for some of the sets will help. The photographs have to be reduced in order to put them on the web site.

There is a list of graveyards on the home page for this site and if someone is particularly interested in any set then please let me know and I will see about working on the naming and indexing of those photographs in order to put them on line as soon as possible.

You can check the list at
http://www.kilkennygenealogy.com

Jane Lyons

Ballyhale :
http://www.kilkennygenealogy.com/graves/ballyhale/index.htm

Bennetsbridge :
http://www.kilkennygenealogy.com/graves/bennetsbridge/index....

Clomantagh :
http://www.kilkennygenealogy.com/graves/clomantagh/index.htm

Clontubbrid :
http://www.kilkennygenealogy.com/graves/clontubrid/index.htm
The following indices to parish records covering county Kilkenny are on line (with more to come). The Johnstown records have been on line for a while with the exception of the marriage index for the years 1856-57. A list of townland names found in those marriage records is included here so that people can see that there are townlands from county Laois included in this parish. People with ancestors from the Galmoy area of Laois should take the Johnstown records into consideration.

Listed below are the names of the parishes and the years covered in my indices. No guarantee can be given that everything is correct, in some instances these records are verydificult to read, or the registers are damaged

Jane

Ballyragget Baptismal Index 1856-57,complete
http://www.kilkennygenealogy.com/rc/braggetb56.htm

Johnstown, Baptisms 1815-1817 - partial - child's name, fathers name, year & townland
http://www.kilkennygenealogy.com/rc/johnsb1815.htm

Johnstown June - Dec 1818, complete , no dates and as above
http://www.kilkennygenealogy.com/rc/johnsb1818.htm

Johnstown 1819-1821, partial as above -
http://www.kilkennygenealogy.com/rc/johnsb1819.htm

Johnstown Marriage index complete, 1856-1857 -
Townlands listed (including all variations of spelling & questionables as I read them!): 7 Sisters - B.Spellan - Ballycuddihy - Ballyellis - Ballyphillip - Bawn - Bawn Aughra - Bawnaghra - Bawnmore -Bayswell - Beggar - Beggars - Beggars...?town - Beggars?town - Boglane - Bricana - Bycuddy - ByDonnell - ByPhillip - Castletown - Coo?lpatrick - Coolaclanin?tta - Coolaclaunish - Coolaultha - Coolnacrutta - Donaghmore - Galmoy - Garrybawn - Garrylawn - Glashare - Glishare - Graigue ?more - Graigue Lower - Graigue town - Graigue Upper - Graiguegannon - Graiguegarron - Grange Johnstown - Kyle - Lavally - Lough - Ralogue - Rapoleen - Rath...
Carroll/Barrett families of Kilkenny

Looking for info on John J. Carroll b. abt. 1849-50 in Ireland. His parents were John Carroll and Mary Kirby. He emigrated to NYC in 1872. He married Eliza F. Barrett of Kilkenny. She was born 1851 and Baptized at St. John's. Her parents were Michael Barrett and Judith Roonan (Ronan). Her parents were also married at St. John's. Judith was Baptized at St. Canice's RC. Eliza emigrated to NYC in 1870 and married John J. Carroll abt. 1874-78. They were naturalized in 1879. They had 7 sons but only 4 survived: Michael Joseph (later named changed to Joseph Michael), Pierre, Charles and Arthur. John and Eliza are buried in St. Raymonds Cemetery in the Bronx. She passed away in 1920 and John in 1924. If this family sounds familiar to anyone, I would love to hear from you. I am trying to locate exactly where in Ireland John J. is from. All of his papers only state Ireland. Also trying to find the Church where they were married...somewhere in Manhattan? They are my g-grandparents...Arthur is my grandfather.

Thanks,

Sue Ness

St.Bridget's Church was part of the Killermogh Union and the church and graveyard are in the townland which was called Glebe, but is now Attanagh village.
Place name in Ireland. Kilmainham?? Cill Mhaighneann, NEVILLE

Is there a place in Ireland called, or once called Kilmonoughan ? It's supposed to be the birth place of Thomas Neville 1807. All family trees I've come accross have this place as birthplace for Thomas.
I think it is an English mis spelling of a Gaelic name.

I have come up with this:
Kilmonoughan = Kilmainham = Cill Mhaighneann
(the suburb in Dublin, West of the city centre and south of River Liffey.)

I think gggg grandfather Thomas Neville was not born here.
But he was, I'm sure enlisted in the Army here in 1827..Royals Scots/North British Fusiliers 1/21st regiment of Foot. After a time, this regiment had to escort convicts to Van Diemen's land and Swan River Settlement.

ggggGF Thomas paid his freedom from service and left the Army while in Tasmania, where he married Mary Austin and settled.

I really want to establish if this Kilmonoughan IS actually Kilmainham/Cill Maighneann. Does ANYONE know please?

BRENNAN James b 1825 from Paulstown Kilkenny - can anyone help?

I wonder if anyone is able to help me find out anymore infomation about my Irish ancesters from Paulstown. Kilkenny. I have a record of him on the Uk census as being born in Paulstown but seem to be unable to go any further back than this. My Mum and I visited Paulstown and Kilkenny this year and went to the church whilst we were there - but sadly didn't turn up any clues.
I have a certificate of his marriage to Julia Wall in the UK in 1848 where Charles Brennan is named as the father, I assume he may have also been from Paulstown. So I assume he must have travelled over to the UK sometime between 1825 - 1848. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

His parents were James TAYLOR, a farmer, who died in 1825 (maybe 1829), and Anne JACKSON, b. abt. 1758 and died in 1846 at the age of 88 years. James TAYLOR's father (Samuel's Grandfather)was also named Samuel TAYLOR. Samuel TAYLOR (b. 1809) and his parents were Episcopalians and were married in the Episcopal Church at Castlecomer.
Anne JACKSON TAYLOR's parents were Adam JACKSON and Betty WILSON.
Does anyone know anything about these people/families or how I can find birth and death and estate records for any of them?? THANKS!

She was married in Ballarat Australia in 1859 to William Thomas Hassell, therefore i assume the following:
That Julia Lawler was born 1830 - 1840's residing in Kilkenney prior to emigrating, perhaps as a child.
Any information would be appreciated.

Kilkenny Castle in Kilkenny, Ireland where the "Butler" family lived for centuries.

I have been on a neverending search for almost two years. I am a Butler by blood and I am of Irish heritage. A good friend of mine got to go to Ireland in August of '04 and she went on a tour in Kilkenny Castle in Kilkenny, Ireland. She wasn't taking any notes and she was not allowed to take any photographs either. She saw a painting/portrait of a young woman that she said, "Looked so much like me that it was too strange for words". She was a "Lady" of court and she lived during the time of Lord Of Ormonde James Butler who saved Charles the 2nd. and brought him back to England to be King. I have e-mailed what few sources I have come across and even sent pictures of myself through e-mail attachment. In hopes that perhaps someone out there might know who she is by going by the resemblance. But no such luck, I have always felt a very strong connecton and wonder with England and Ireland. I hope to travel to those two countries someday.

I want so much to know who she was, what she looked like and what she was all about. My friend that made this discovery thinks that perhaps she was the 1st. Duchess of Ormonde Elizabeth Preston or a relation to Anne Boleyn. This part of my family history is very, very important to me and I am driven to know who this woman was. Unfortunately, I cannot travel to Ireland to go to Kilkenny Castle myself. I can only do so much online. I cannot send a picture of myself as an attachment right now. If anyone out there that reads my message has any kind of information or maybe holds the key to unlock this mystery. Please respond to my message on this message board asap! I hope to hear from someone out there, thank you. Sincerely, L.A. Butler

RE: Maggie Letters

I am searching for a family "Letters" from Ireland. Daniel Letters married Mary Anne Boyle. Several children to this couple Margaret b April 1877, Daniel born March 1879, Ellen and Mary born Nov 1888 (twins I believe) , Maggie born 1893. Good possibility there were more children than I have listed. Ellen and Mary and Maggie and another daughter left Ireland and came to North America. I am unaware of when Mary and Ellen came to Noth America.Ellen married in Canada in 1911. Mary was in Canada visiting in 1915 as she was the sponsor for my great aunts baptism. I have found a passenger record for Maggie Letters that places her last residence as Kilcarry Ireland. She Came on the Ship Cameronia leaving from Glasgow. As my geography is poor I thought that maybe Kilcarry may have been a typo and they meant Kilkenny. Would appreciate any info or direction anyone can give me. Thank You

John Clear married Mary Cahill Laharty and left for Puslinch Twp in Wellington Co in S. Ontario Canada arriving and purchasing land in 1829. I am looking for family records in Kilkenny for John. Mary Cahill had a daughter Catherine from her first marriage to a Laharty previous to m John Clear. The name is spelt Clair today. I do have records for their life in Puslinch. I am hoping to get some other family information in Kilkenny. Can anyone tell me where Paulstown might be in Kilkenny?

She married WALTER EALES, born c.1855 in Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire, England, but as I can't find their marriage record I assume they must have married in Ireland, and their first child, MARY ANN EALES, was born there c.1879 before they moved back to Northamptonshire. Walter was in the Royal Artillery; this could be why he was in Ireland.

Can anyone suggest how I can find their marriage record or their child's birth record or perhaps any military records? I need them to trace Margaret's family - I don't even know her surname!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Happy hunting,
Julia

Looking for Martin Scully and Ann Clark from the County of Kilkenny, and possible death/burial records prior to 1861.

We experiencing great difficulty in locating members of the Scully line of the family. In my Great-Great-Grandparents 1861 marriage record it states, “daughter of the deceased Martin Scully and the late Ann Clark of the County of Kilkenny”.

Our Great-Great Grandparents, Mary Ann (Bridget) Scully and William A. Tate married in St. Patrick’s Church in Quebec, Canada. Later, in 1864, at the baptism of son William Charles Tate, a relative named Catherine Scully is noted as a sponsor on the baptism record. We presume this person to be a relative of Mary Ann.

Apparently Martin Scully and Ann Clark Scully died before their Daughter's 1861 marriage while in Kilkenny. Any help in locating the Kilkenny Scully's of our family certainly would be most appreciated.

Thanks so much.
pamela tate
I have found my great, great, great grandfather Murtha Hobin was from Kilkenny, Ireland. He was married to Ann Hanlon. He was born about 1775 and she was born about 1779 and they were married about 1800. They had a son, Richard born about 1803 who sailed to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1829 and married Margaret Kilfoil(Gilfoy) in Sept. 13, 1829. When I found their marriage record, I found his parents names. I am in the process of trying to find the names of his children, so far, I have Sarah(June 11,1844), Margaret(Oct. 6, 1842) and maybe a Michael(Oct. 13, 1835). I would like to find out more about Murtha and Ann, but don't know where to start. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

Hi,
Sir William Ryves de Montmorency Morres born 1763 and died 1829. His illegitimate son, William de Montmorency of Uppercourt, Kilkenny was taken to court by Devereux who contested the Will of Sir William.
This is about 1838.
In the court case a wife of William de Montmorency is mentioned . Who was she?
As Sir William had no legal heirs his knighthood could not be used by an heir and came to an end.

What happened to William De Montmorency, the illegitimate son?
Kilkenny Co.

Looking for a Samuel Delaney/Dulaney/Dalany, the census
takers have mutilated this name in America.

Samuel was probably first seen in Greenbrier Co. near or
in Virginia around 1750, he died in Montgomery Co. in
1812. Our researchers have not been able to find this man
for over 30 yrs. If anyone can help.
There is a little story, true or not true that he father
gave him $21 dollars to go a start a shoe shop and he took
the money and came to America. Who really knows. Thanks
for any help. Sandy Dulaney

Families of Hackett and Owen

My great grandfather William Hackett was born in Kilkenny around 1841. I know he married a woman called Anne I am not sure of her maiden name it could have been Owen. She was born around 1851 I know they had one daughter born in Kilkenny around 1870-71 called Julia. I Know they came over to England when i dont know. They appear on the 1881 Census Index I know they had two more children sons Thomas who was born 16th October 1886 in what was called Durham but is now Sunderland Tyne and Wear and my grandfather James who I know was born 16 th September but I am not sure of the year 1877-78. Any information on either of these families would be a great help.

Thanks Yasmin Christie

GRAHAM family in Kilbeacon parish

I have been trying to research the origins of a Graham family. I have come across research conducted by another researcher who has the head of this family, George Graham b.abt 1798, as having been born in Baley Brae, County Down, Ireland. I have been unable to locate any such location in County Down. I do, however, see evidence of a "Ballybrae" in Kilbeacon Parish, County Kilkenny.

I would appreciate any assistance in solving this mystery. The George Graham I am interested in migrated with his family to Ontario, Canada in the early 1800s. I am trying to determine George's parentage. He married a woman named Charlotte Magee; records indicate she was from County Cavan.

Sincerely,
Jeannie Graham
