Rosse Family of Rosses Bay

The Ordnance Survey Memoirs, Vol. 36, page 119 says that Rosses Bay is in Clondermot parish. THE BISHOPRIC OF DERRY AND THE IRISH SOCIETY OF LONDON volumes call this area "Crooke of Ember" and details royal salmon fishing there which is being contested. Giving testimony circa 1685 are Stephen Rosse, 72 years old, of Shantonagh, parish of Templemore; Simon Rosse, 56, of Crooke of Ember (now Rosses Bay); Robert Rosse, 58, of the Crook of Ember--all of whom are brothers. Stephen Rosse testified that both his father and his grandfather had been fishermen here. Who were these Rosse's who held fishing rights on this stretch of the Foyle north of Londonderry (town) and west of Limavady?

I'm trying to locate where in Ulster my ancestor James Ross, born circa 1780, married Rosanna Long, lived. I know there were Long's at Ballykelley and Limavady; the above Rosse's were at Rosses Bay, and I'm aware of the large Ross family who lived in the river Roe valley between Limavady and Dungiven. Jame's and Rosanna's son James Ross, Jr., married Sarah Dickey (daughter of James Dickey and Rachel Farley) who was born at Dungannon, co. Tyrone about 1825. However, my grandmother did not think the Ross family and the Dickey family were from the same area--SO--Im looking elsewhere for the Ross's and the Long's. I haven't located any of the four families in Ulster, so would appreciate suggestions on any of the four.

Hi Ron
In 1849/50 gg-grandfather John Ewing and brother James left Londonderry Co. to Canada. They were Presbyterians and about age 20. James never had children but John's were Alexander, Mary Ann, John, James & Williams (twins), Jane, Robert, Archibald, Eleanor and Samuel. Reportedly my John had two more brothers who went to New York. The 1831 Census has two Alexander Ewings at Castledawson and Magherafelt. Would you know if John & James were sons of either Alexander?
Thanks in advance.
Les Wilson, Calgary, AB

Thanks for your reply. As for John Knox, I have all his information after he arrived in the United States. All we have is that he was born in Londonderry, Ireland in 1810. Nothing of record as to his parents location there. I am still searching immigration records at his point of immigration in Philidephia to locate other info but I was hoping to locate someone that knew something of the Knoxs in Londonderry in 1810. Thanks again for your reply and suggestions. I will check it out.

family of John MCNAMEE & Rose KELLY:
1) John MCNAMEE, b. 1873, d. 1960, married in 1920 to Sarah Corr from Carrickmore; 5 children (3 daughters, 2 sons)
2) Francis MCNAMEE, b. 1875, d. ????
3) Michael (Bro Columba) MCNAMEE, b. 1877 d. 1962, Mount Argos
4) Patrick MCNAMEE, b. 1880, d. ????
5) Fr. Bernard MCNAMEE, b. 1884, d. 1945
6) Fr. Edward MCNAMEE, b. 1885, d. 1967, parish priest of Banagher/Ballniscreen parish???
7) Mary Ann MCNAMEE, b. ???? d. 1962, unm
8) Ellen MCNAMEE, b. ???? d. 1967, unm
9) James MCNAMEE, b. ????

Sorry but the info on this family is a little vague:

They lived on a farm outside Draperstown up the side of a steep mountain. There may have been more of this family; another son went to America where he married and had a family of daughters. He may have married late in life, too. At least only two sons married; neither of the daughters married, they worked as housekeepers in parochial houses.

The Irish News was founded by I think a John Kelly, who was related to this family by their mother Rose (nee Kelly); if not through the Kellys, it's through the McNamees. There were (and possibly still are) Kelly relations of this family living in Strabane up til the 1960s.

LEE or LEES, Magherafelt, Dunamoney, Co. Derry

Have ascertained that our Lee (or Lees) ancestors have come from the townland of Dunamoney near Magherafelt. John Lees, Thomas Lees (brothers) and Robert Lees (son of John) all emigrated to Ontario, Canada approx. 1832 with their families. Robert Lees (our direct ancestor) was baptised 19 Mar 1815 in 1st Presbyterian Magherafelt Church. Robert was shown in the baptismal entry as a "Lee", but a Canadian census indicates "Lees". 2005 Electoral roll for Magherafelt area indicates 44 Lees families and 22 Lee families still there. Most happy to share further info on our Lee(s) should you feel there's a possible link. The name "William" seems prominent in their children so there is the possibility that John and Thomas' father's name was William (only conjecture).
Kind regards
Margaret Lee
Canada

I am trying to find family of John Anderson born 1828. He joined the Royal Irish Constabulary May 18, 1848 at age 19. He gave his native county as Londonderry. He was recommended by Inspector David Patten who was based in Derry City at that time so John must have lived in or near the city when he applied. The only other information I have is that at the time of the marriageElizabeth (Eliza( Connolly in 1852 (in Thurles, Tipperary - where he was based)he named his father also as John Anderson and that his father was a pensioner.

Does anyone have any connection with this John or any clues as to how to find where he actually came from and his father and family;

Esdale, Kilpatrick, McClintock around Kildolllah in1850's

I am looking for information about the family of David Esdale, married to Esther Kilpatrick. They had six children - John (from Kildollah) married to Jane McClintock in Ballyportry in Ballymeany in County Antrim (1856); George, William, Matthew; two daughters, probably Margaret and Jean.

The father, David, supposedly died in a parade; the widow and all but daughter Jean emigrated to and settled in Ontario Canada sometime during the 1860's.

I have found a lot about this family in Canada; I would like to find more information about this family in Ireland.

Can anyone tell me the best way to pursue information on this Presbyterian family in County Derry? I think their residence was in the Bann Valley not far from Colerain as far as I have been able to puzzle it out.

MOODY's of Magilligan, Coleraine, Limavady, Agadowey, Macosquin and Co. L'derry in general

I have been searching for years for any info that might help clarify which Moody's belong to which clan in Co. L'derry, Nor. Ireland. We have several Ydna matches to Moody's from Co. L'derry and one that came to America (Pennsylvania) that was from Co. Antrim (Ballymoney area).
Our other Ydna Moody cousins families came from Macosquin, Aghadowey and Limavady that we know of so far.
However, the Moody family of Magilligan and Coleraine also have a great deal in common with our other Ydna Moody cousins in that they seemed to have the same names, married into the same families etc. not to mention these Moody's all lived within a relatively close area to each other.
I am searching for Anything that might help me tie up some of the loose ends on these branches of Moody's.
Our earliest known Moody ancestor was a Thomas MOODY b.c1710 in/of Aghadowey, Co. L'derry. We also had Moody ancestors in Limavady dating back to around this time as well or just after.
What is ironic about these Moody's is that most all of them seemed to have come to Pennsylvania. Some went to New York City and were hatters and boot makers.
Some landed in Maryland but removed to PA and they were linen weavers.
One branch went to Nova Scotia from the New Jersey area in the mid 1700's not as Loyalists but probably as planters, taking over the lands made available after the Acadian exile in c1755.

Nearly all of our Moody's married into other known families who came to Nor. Ireland from Scotland. Most of our Ydna is more closely matched or shares partial matches to many other Scottish surnames indicating to me that our Moody's/Moodie's/Mudie's spent a great deal of time in Scotland at some point early on in our Ydna chain.

Some of the Surnames that our ydna Moody's married into or have close family ties to were McQuiston, McGranahan, Martin, Williams, Williamson, Chisolm, Glendinning/Clendennen, McNeill, Denny, Cherry, Jackson, Crawford, Witty/McQuitty/McWhitty, Watson, Sloan, Gordon, Fleming, Shannon, Wilson, Lynch, McCaghen, Cochran, Armstrong, Eakin/Ekin, Allison, Toler/Tolar, Carre/Carr/Kerr, Wingate, Armstrong, Phinney/Finney, McBride, Sterrett/Starratt and many others.

I have noticed that many of these same families also lived in these areas that the Moody's did in Co. L'derry that I mentioned above (Magilligan, Coleraine, Macosquin, Aghadowey, Limavady etc.) and I would be most greatful for any help on brief genealogies of MOODY families who may link to any of these names in these areas.

I am also interested in learning if any of your Moody family history states that our Moody's came to Nor. Ireland from Scotland.
Thank you for any help.

He had one known son Robert (born 1789 in NI), assumably a William Jr. and possibly a third son. VERY interested in finding family in Ireland - and ultimately Scotland!

Hello, I am looking for information on the descendants of Half-Hanged John McNaughten and his accomplice John (or Thomas?) Dunlop, who were both executed in 1761 for the murder of Marianne Knox. I know John McNaughten had children but I don't have names. I can't find any information on Dunlop.
The reason I discovered Prehen is because of a family legend that has been passed down: twin brothers fled from Ireland on a ship, one of them died on the way and his body was hidden in a trunk for the rest of the trip. That trunk was passed down through the family for many generations before my grandmother threw it out. Now all we have is a garbled story my mother heard as child. The boys' father was said to have been beheaded by a mob at "castle peahen." The only similar name I have come across is Prehen. We are having trouble tracing that family branch back beyond 1820 so I was hoping if i could find descendants i could try tracing either Mcnaughten or Dunlop the other way.

I have a John DUNACHIE son of Owen Dunachie (police inspector - deceased) and Margaret McDonald (or McDaniel - poor image - deceased) who was b, ca 1843 based on the 1871 census (states he was born in Derry) and his 1868 marriage registration in Glasgow to Mary Hamilton Muirhead. They had two boys, James 1869 and William Muirhead 1871. Mary died in 1877 and they vanished from Scotland by the 1881 census. For now I'm assuming he returned to Ireland.

This is my first venture into Ireland so if someone can point me in the right direction to secure appropriate records it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!!!

Don Muirhead
Port Dover, ON CA
John MOODY of Co. L'derry who had sons William and Robert - Limavady links etc.

I am searching for the family of a John MOODY who was married at least twice, first wife's name is unknown to me at this time, but with this first wife he had a son named William MOODY who was said to attend school in or near Limavady where his Grandmother lived. (not sure if that was his Grandmother MOODY or his mother's mother?).
His father John MOODY was said to have owned a bleach-green in Co. L'derry. However, I believe this branch of the MOODY family has ties to the MOODY's in the Roe Valley/Limavady area and also to those of Magilligan and Coleraine areas as well.
I also firmly believe there is a tie to the John MOODY b.c1813 whose son James MOODY married Mary Ann LYNCH (daug. of William Lynch and Margaret Jane McCAGHEN...various spellings on her last name) who in turn came to Pennsylvania in the latter 1800's sailing out of Scotland.
We have a Ydna link to this branch of the Moody's (James who married Mary Ann).
The Magilligan MOODY's are linked back to a John MOODY and Mary HOPKINS whose family were said to have come to Nor. Ireland from Fifeshire, Scotland. I Highly suspect we are or Would Be Ydna related to this branch of the Moody's as well as the first names and other links are so much in common with our Known Moody's from Nor. Ireland who came to Nor. America (from Nova Scotia to the Southern states of the USA).
One of my matching Ydna families is in Nova Scotia and at least one known member of the Magilligan branch of MOODY's also came to Nova Scotia, living in the Exact same place as my own Ydna Moody cousins did as well. That was Israel MOODY who married Elizabeth CASKEY (prob. orig. MaCaskie or McCaskey or some variant spelling...see Black's book of Scottish Surnames under the spelling of MaCASKIE).
Within my own MOODY family tree the middle name of "ROSS" is used several times in the children of my 5th grt. grandparents James MOODY and his wife Elizabeth DONALD (descendant of family of Clan Donald/MacDonald). I suspect there may have been some family link with the ROSS's back in Nor. Ireland or from Scotland to my own Moody family but so far have not been able to prove this other than from the fact that the surname appears as middle names in my own Moody family tree and for what reason I have no idea as none of these descendants married Ross's and none of their wives families from my own research has revealed any Ross link as yet, so I am guessing this link MAY be from my James MOODY's parents side as it is not on his wife Elizabeth DONALD's side. (One of their grt. grandson's was named "James Ross NEWCOMB"...was this my 5th grt. grandfather's middle name as well?....James Ross MOODY??)

The surname of LEWIS also appears as a middle name among their grandchildren too but there were Lewis' in this area who may have come over from Nor. Ireland too for all I know.
My James MOODY appeared out of no where in York Co., Maine (not all that far Geographically) from Nova Scotia where our Ydna Moody's lived), when he married my 5th grt. grandmother Elizabeth Donald (also seen spelled as Donnell/Dunnell etc.) in Jan. of 1774. Then they disappear off the map again.
I suspect James came to York Co., Maine for work as it was a flourishing port during that time.
Elizabeth's father was Capt. Benjamin Donald/Donnell a very prominent man in York Co. and Lincoln Co., Maine as was his father Capt. Nathaniel DONALD/Donnell who came to York Co., ME from Rowley, Essex Co., MA. Capt. Nathaniel DONALD's wife was Elizabeth TODD. The Donald's/Donnell's owned their own ships and a great deal of lands in York and Lincoln Co.'s in Maine and perhaps in other areas too.

They donated land to build a bridge in York Co., Maine and other lands they owned in Lincoln Co., ME (Bath/Georgetown area) for cemeteries. They also owned lands in and along the Sheepscot River (at that time called Jeremy Squam) in the area now known as Wiscasset, Maine.
I have deed info and details on this, as well as Capt. Nathaniel's will where he mentions the lands given to his son Benjamin etc. One of my 5th grt. grandmother's Nephew's (son of her brother Moses Donald/Donnell) was Rev. Moses DONALD/Donnell who lived in Wiscasset, ME for a while and he was a Methodist/Episcopal preacher in the church in Wiscasset that has the big Clock Tower. (it did the last time I was there anyway...several years ago now).

At any rate, my James Moody has been my Brick Wall for years and the only thing to help chisel away at that wall so far has been the proof of relationships via our Ydna testing results. I was always told that our Moody's were from the English lines that came to New England in the 1600's. The Ydna results have now Proven that NOT to be the case. There were 3 major lines of Moody's in New England all around the same time, all naming their children the same names, who were all born around the same times and then on top of that all lived in the same states, towns etc. even marrying into some of the same families.
This has caused a considerable amount of confusion and grief among those of us Moody's trying to find our proper family tree connections. Not to mention the countless numbers of Old Genealogies which have reported links that are now being found out via Ydna results are Not Correct.
The Clement Moody line of Exeter, NH has NO links whatsoever via bloodlines to the William or John MOODY lines of Newbury, MA and Hartford, CT respectively. Also William and John MOODY were NOT blood cousins at least as is being shown to us right now, again from Ydna testing results. Perhaps one day more male born MOODY's will be tested that will prove that otherwise, but as it stands right now, there is No link between any of these 3 early MOODY families who came to New England in the early 1600's.

My rogue Moody family has No links to any of the 3 major Moody lines of early New England. My Moody family didn't show up in Nor. America until around c1750. Ditto for my Ydna Moody family in Nova Scotia. Our earliest known Ydna MOODY was a Thomas MOODY b.c1710 in/of Aghadowey, Co. L'derry, Ireland who married Jean McQUISTON supposed daughter of a Benjamin McQuiston and they and many others came to New Castle, DE in c1735 and removed to PA for a while but then headed South to Guilford Co., NC. From there, their descendants removed to TN, OH, KY, MS, AL, TX, KS, ARK etc. we have ydna Moody cousins all over the place now.

Back to the Moody's of Nor. Ireland. Here are some of the other Surnames I believe to be part of our family tree as well...those in Nor. Ireland or Scotland who have married into our Moody/Moodie/Mudie family or who have known Ydna links to our lines...
Ledlie, Eakin, Stewart/Stuart, I've also recently noted a possible HEMPHILL link from something I read online, Hutton, Leslie, Shannon, Herron, Crawford, CARRE/Carr/Kerr,
Chisolm/Chisholm, McNeill, Glendinning/Clendennen, Hamilton, very possible Morrison, Ross as I mentioned earlier, Green, Smith and several others.
There may be No link between these other Moody branches in Nor. Ireland even though they sure do seem to have a lot in common with our family, and perhaps one day we will find out the truth.
I think it is a real shame however that certain branches of these Moody families appear to be unwilling to share the genealogy of their branches with others (Not all of them, but I have encountered some who do not) when they might be able to help those of us who have been struggling for so long to find ours. You could be the very ones who hold the key to tear down that brick wall. Since the Nor. Ireland records are so scarce, I feel that genealogy is for everyone, and if you've discovered some old record somewhere in your travels that might help someone link to those folks, I believe its a kindness that should be shared.
If I can help anyone further with any of the info I might have regarding these folks I've mentioned here, please leave a message reply and I'll do my best to help you out.
If you can help me with any of these names or family branches I have mentioned, I would be Most greatful as well.
Thank You.

William Maughlin, born 1738?

Our family has been traced back to William Maughlin of York County, PA, but we've been stuck for years as to his father's name. His father fought in the Battle of Culloden per Joseph, William's grandson (my great-great grandfather). Recently, we've found a letter from Ezemiah Maughlin to Mrs. AJ Maughlin (Joseph's son) that shows William lived for a time in County Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland and his church certificate was signed by the Session of Castle Dawson. Any further information would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to exchange information on the Hasson and Rodgers/Rogers families of County Londonderry, Ireland. Jacob Caldwell Hasson married Isabella Rodgers, daughter of Andrew and Jane (Gordon) Rodgers, in Second Limavady Presbyterian Church in 1847 and immigrated shortly afterwards. His brother, William, married Ann Morrison, daughter of John and Katie Morrison, and immigrated several years earlier. A Thomas Hasson was a witness to the marriage. Jacob's father was listed as "dead" but did not give his name. William's obituary states that he was born in Bovevagh. These families lived in Drumachose, Bovevagh, Dungiven, and Tamlaught Finlagen parishes. Likely there was a Caldwell family involved somewhere.

They all immigrated to the US, lived in NYC, Bureau Co. Illinois, and in 1870 homesteaded in Dodge County Nebraska and died there

Leon and Mary Lou Hasson
lhhmlh@door.net
c/o Barbara Lewis (who sent this message)
lewisroots@attbi.com
His will was definitely witnessed in Staunton, VA. Anybody have any clues? - Bill Campbell

I have reason to believe that my Anderson family came from around Londonderry. I am looking for information on three marriages: Samuel Walker (b. abt 1800) and Martha Anderson (b. abt 1799) in Ireland before 1824; James Anderson (b. abt 1804) and Elizabeth ------ (b. abt 1805) in Ireland prior to 1836, when they emigrated to New Brunswick, Canada; and Samuel Thompson Anderson (b. abt 1810) and Mary Mills (b. abt 1804) prior to 1838 when their son Samuel was born in Ireland.

Any help with any of these marriages would be appreciated as I have not been able to find documentation on any of these.

The father of my immigrant ancestors was William McElwee, who is supposedly buried in the Old Presbyterian Churchyard in Londonderry. He would have probably died somewhere between 1745 and 1780. His sons arrived in America around 1760 as near as I can tell. Searching for documentation on William, his wife's name, any other children, etc. Also, would anyone know what clan this name would indicate. I have one article which says the family originated in County Ross, Scotland and is Clan Ross. Other research seems to point to it as a derivative of McAvoy and be Clan McClaine.???????

Newton Camavady (Newtown Limavady) records.

I am looking to track down information on the parents and siblings of a woman named Sarah Thompson who was born September 10, 1810 in "Newton Camavaddy, Derry, Ireland." This comes from an 1848 Mormon marriage record, so the spelling is probably off. I have no idea exactly where this is, but it has been suggested that this is maybe supposed to be Newtown Limavady (which doesn't seem unlikely in transcribing hand-written records). Can anyone help me track Sarah down? She is part of a big puzzle I am desperately trying to figure out. Absolutely anyhting would help. Thanks.
This was an article published recently in the Mid-Ulster Mail
By Staff reporter
CASTLEDAWSON and District Branch of the Royal British Legion are hoping to mark the 90th anniversary of the ending of World War One by publishing a booklet.
This would include details of those from the local area, that is Castledawson, Bellaghy, Knockloughrim and surrounding districts, who lost their lives in the World Wars and indeed, in subsequent conflicts.

The Legion would like to hear from anyone having details, photographs, letters etc. of any family members who died in the conflicts.

Needless to say, any material lent will be returned to the owner safe and sound. Names are often read on war memorials, but little or nothing is known of the people.

Indeed, the War Memorial Hall at Main Street has within a number of marble tablets and plaques that bear the names of many who died during the 1914-1918 conflict.

While their names “ever liveth”, time has long forgotten the personal details of those who gave their lives. Also, a War Memorial was erected on the old “Bell Park” in 1994, this too in memory of members of HM Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in two World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

Anyone who feels that they have information that could be of use in this booklet , should contact Mr Sam Hudson, telephone 79632058 after 7pm , Mr Ronnie Curry 79468408, or any member of the Castledawson Branch of the Royal British Legion.

Waterside in Londonderry?

I notice how knowledgeable you all are on this thread about Derry and this general area so I wondered if I could glean any information from anyone. Having just had the first piece of luck in tracing my G grandparents in Derry by reading a chance remark about the 'Declaration' of 1912 (only found my G grandmother so far on this) I have the address of 4 Clifton Street, Waterside, Londonderry. I am sure this is correct as it also is on my grandmother's marriage certificate of the same year. My grandmother was married in Ebrington Rd Presbyterian church to a british soldier stationed at the time in Ebrington barracks in Derry.
I have tried marriage records of churches and other helpful people have tried to identify John b 1863 (+-1yr) and Matilda b1858(+-1yr) Adair, in public records but with no success. Matilda, I understand came from Scotland. I have worked out their birth years from burial records I hold. Any help, information about waterside or information on the area that might help would be so appreciated. I think my grandmother Annie b 1885, believed the eldest of about nine children, grew up on a farm but her parents were very poor so her father was probably an agricultural labourer then. One brother John, died as a private in WW1 in the RIF.
Thanks for any help.

Is it "Newton-Limavady" or "NewtoWn"?

I have noticed that several folks searching for relatives have referred to this town or parish as "Newton"-Limavady (as in the cookie Fig Newton for example)
Is this the correct spelling? If it is, then I have been spelling it wrong as "NewTOWN" all this time.
If the spelling is indeed "Newton" then this carries a possible greater significance in regards to my own family name of MOODY (prob. orig. spelled as MOODIE/Mudie/Mudy from Scotland) and the area of Co. Londonderry where they might have come from or possibly showing where their other family of MOODY's were from, since the name of "NEWTON" is used several times in our Ydna MOODY family trees.

This could be showing some sort of loyalty to their hometown area back in Co. Londonderry when they came to America (Pennsylvania) originally but then later moved to the Guilford Co., NC area and other places as well.
I can't seem to find the name of "Newton" elsewhere in the Moody family or the families in which they married into, doesn't mean it isn't there, just that I am not familiar with it if it is.
Therefore a Possible clue; even though its a broad stretch; may be that they were naming children (mostly used as a Middle name) for their beloved Nor. Ireland township of Newton-Limavady.
For quite some time I have been trying to make a family connection between our Ydna families who all seemed to have come over to America (mostly to PA too) from Co. L'derry, Ireland, and the John MOODY family who owned a Bleach Green who had family in Newton-Limavady. John was married twice and had sons by each wife making them half brothers. These half brothers William and Robert MOODY came to PA in c1816 with nice mens linen shirts to sell and moved in with a relative in PA (poss. Philly area). There were already MOODY's living in this area and one of them is another confirmed Ydna Moody family to us (Samuel Moody who was a linen weaver and wife Martha), whether or not this was the relative that Wm. and Robert moved in with we have no way of knowing, but its possible.
Robert Moody died while in his 20's but his half brother William Moody removed to the Pittsburgh, PA area and was quite successful as were some of his children and descendants. I would love to be able to find a family connection to these Newton/Newtown-Limavady MOODY's and our Ydna Moody's. Perhaps our earliest known ydna ancestor Thomas MOODY b.c1710 in/of Aghadowey, Co. Londonderry, Ireland was giving us clues to the links in his Moody family back in Ireland by way of the repeated use of the name of "NEWTON" in his descendants.
Anyway, If the name of this town is NEWTON, please let me know as I have seen it used both ways over and over and have wondered which one is correct.
Thank You.

Skaggs & Mary Thear MYTH!

Just received this and it's proof WITHOUT A SHADOW of a doubt that MARY THEAR was NOT married to a Skaggs... please read the following AND PASS IT ON so that this poor woman can be removed from the SKAGGS GENEALOGY pages as she should be!

The Lyman Draper Manuscript Collection archived at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin, tells us that "Henry, Charles, and Richard Skaggs and three other brothers were grandsons of an Irishman who fled from Ireland of Londonderry in 1688-'89, when so many of the hardy Scotch-Irish race emigrated to the shores of the New World. We find his adventurous descendants, natives of Maryland, living on the frontiers of New River and sharing largely in the toils and hardships of the Long Hunters in 1770-'71." [note 23, p.277: "MS. statements of Capt. John Barbee, derived from Thomas and Moses Skaggs, son of Charles Skaggs; MS. notes of conversations with Morgan Vardeman of Kentucky."] --Lyman C. Draper, The Life of Daniel Boone, Ted Franklin Belue, ed. (Mechanicsburg, PA: Stackpole Books, 1998), 268.

Many years ago, perhaps several decades ago, a book was discovered that contained the names of Mary Thear, age 60, Richard Scaggs (Scago), age 29, and John Scaggs (Scago), age 25, identified together in a lease dated April 10, 1753, in Kent Co., MD. One entry on page 9 has the code, (M), in front of Mary Thear's name and a few researchers jumped to the conclusion that this meant she was Richard and John's mother.
However, page 2 of this book lists the abbreviation codes used on its pages:
(A) date of lease -- 1753, April 10; (B) to whom leased -- Mary Thear;
(D) tenant in possession -- Annas Glenn; (C) number of acres -- 15;
(E) annual rent -- 0.2 0; (L) now held -- Richard & John Scago (Scaggs) & Lessee;
(M) ages of the persons mentioned in the lease & other remarks --
Mary Thear 60; Richard 29, John 25.
William Boggs, 1630 - 1737, Londonderry, Ireland

I'm looking for my family line in Ireland. I'm looking for a line that descends from William Boggs born in 1630 in Londonderry, Ireland. He died in 1685 in Londonderry, Ireland. His father was James Boggs (no other information given.) He also had a son named James Boggs who was born around 1670 in Londonderry, Ireland. He died in 1737 in Whiteland, Chester County, Pennsylvania. James Boggs, son of William, was in the United States prior to 1724. We know this because his son, Joesph, was born in 1724 in Pennsylvania. If anyone has any information on this line or think that they have information on this line, but need further information on the lines continuous after it arrived in America, please email me at melissabreazeale@yahoo.com

My family has Scot-Irish roots and them came from N.Ireland (Belfast, Ahoghill, or Magherafelt) to Port Glasgow aka Pt.G (easier to write, lol)

Here is what I know, any more info or even confirmation of my info would be lovely.

The Mayes family came to Pt. G. sometime between 1860-1885, the head of my family was Isaac Mayes born abt 1831, likely in Belfast and his wife Mary Ann Tolland born abt. 1836 likely in Belfast.
Their children were Robert b. 1859, Maggie b. 1863 and maybe, not certain, Ellen, Charlotte, Sarah.
As mentioned they came to Pt. G. in 1860-1885 reasons unknown, I'd love to know or even have a speculation.

Son Robert Married Rose O'Kane born abt 1864 in Scotland or Ireland - would love to know! Certainly an Irish surname. she died in the 1930's in Pt.G.

Their son Thomas was born in Port G. He is my great grandpa and he immigrated to the USA in the 1950's and I think he died in England. Anyways, his wife, my great grandma is very close to me. I never met her as she died many years before me, but my dad and aunt were close to her and say I remind them soo much of her.
She was born Alice Ann Toal, in 1889 in Pt.G and her parents were James Toal born possibly 1854 in Scotland, wife Isabella Weir born abt 1860 place unknown. I'd love any info on the Weir's and Toal's.

So any info, even suspect, on the Toal/Mayes/Weir/O'Kane would be soo much appreciated as I am getting no where and I'm dying to trace my Scot-Irish roots since I "seem" to be so much like these relatives!

thank you!

Is your family from Knockan in Banagher Parish?

My Mc/Magilton ancestors came from this small community and I would like to find out more about Knockan. Joseph Magilton was a carpenter and raised a family there in the 1820s and 30s and his daughters continued with the farm untill about 1920. This family is linked with the names Gillespie, Nesbitt and McCaughey in Knockan. The largest property in Knockan, Ash Park was owned by the Stevensons. Do they have a family historian?
Wikipedia tells me that there was a large bleach-green at Knockan for bleaching Irish Linen, some of which was woven by local farmers.
I would like to hear from anyone with a knowledge of Knockan or access to local records, or even a decent map of the village.

Cheers,
Matthew Magilton,
Melbourne, Australia.
mbmagilton atmsn dotcom.

Hunter and Henry Families of Ireland

Seeking information and connections in Ireland for the Hunter family.

Thomas H. Hunter b. about 1804 Londonderry or Antrim, Ireland, d. 1880 Hamilton, Butler Co., OH. Thomas came to the US some time before 20 Apr. 1826 when he married Clarrissa Laughlin in Butler Co. OH.

Family tradition stories say he was married in Ireland and left a wife and children to come to the US.

His parents were Thomas and Martha (Richy) Hunter and they did not immigrate.
Thomas senior was a tailor by trade. Thomas and Martha had the following children that I know of:
(Not necessarily in birth order)
Thomas H.
Samuel
Robert
William
Betsey
Martha

Betsey did not immigrate and lived in Ireland.

I believe the brothers Samuel, Robert and William also immigrated to Ohio after Thomas H Hunter.

Martha b. about 1810, Derry Ireland, married William Henry who died some time between 1844 and 1848 in Ireland. The only children I know of are: (I believe there were others)
Thomas, b 4 Nov 1832, Ireland, d. 4 Mar 1911 Cass Co. IN, USA.
John F., b. about 1836, Ireland, d. USA
Matilda, b. 30 July 1844, Ireland, d. 6 Dec. 1911 Richmond, Wayne Co., IN, USA
