Looking for relatives that preceeded my Great Grandfather John Conboy born in 1866 Roosky, County Leitrim Ireland. The Conboy or Conaboy family were land owners and farmers on land donated by the Royalty of Spain back in the 1700s. 1901 census does list names but I am not sure to which Conboy.

John Conboy later emmigrated to Manhatten US where he started a warehousing and moving business called JB Conboy Trucking. He married Anne Hogan. John died at a young age and later my Grandfather George V Conboy took over at a young age a built a large business.

Family lore says the Conaboys, of the catholic faith would ride horses at night to fight the protestants.

Any Family connection is appreciated

Paul Twist
twist01@bellsouth.net

FEELEY SURNAME ---- KINLOUGH??

Elizabeth Feeley journeyed to Canada from County Donegal, Ireland, in 1830 with her young son Charles (who was born in 1828). We have no way of knowing what township they hailed from although there was reference to a place called Ballyshannon with regards to other relatives.

There is a story, however, that David Teed Sr. sent money to Ireland to bring out a bride. When she arrived, she had a young boy with her. The woman was Elizabeth Feeley (my GGG grandmother) and the boy, her son Charles (my GG grandfather). Why would a Protestant send for a Catholic bride? Such a marriage was almost unheard of in its day. It is not known where they were married.

Long have we suspected that the Feeley's originated in County Donegal. My aunt Helen travelled about the area in the fall of 2002. After talking with many of the locals, as well as visiting numerous centers and graveyards, she was told that the Feeley name, albeit not an overly common one, originated in County Leitrim - quite possibly in the township of Kinlough.

I am now hoping to make connections with other Feeley families in the area, be it through email or snail mail correspondence.

Hoping to finally make a break through!

Regards,
Ms. Michele Doucette
Stephenville, Newfoundland, Canada

Hi Tracey
I am a descendant of the Brannan's and Prior's from Thornaby.
They are usually misspelt on the Census's.
Bridget Prior was the wife of Thomas Prior. She i named as the Stepmother of your relative on one of the Census's, but I believe she is the Aunt or Great Aunt of them. I have the birth Certificate of one of her son's who was born in Thornaby and her Maiden name Stated as Degan, they could not write and so the name may be misspelt also.

Steven

Mulvanerty/Mulvanaghty and Burns in Leitrim mid-1800s

I'm trying to find information on my great-great grandparents from Leitrim. Their son was born in Largan townland, Drumshanbo District, so I'm guessing the parents were from around there too.

John Mulvanerty was born about 1841. I've got him in the 1901 census as a farmer. I also have Hugh Mulvanaghty in the 1796 Flax Growers list as the only name close to Mulvanerty in Co. Leitrim and I suspect they're related but can't find any proof. Perhaps Hugh is John's grandfather?

John's wife Catherine Burns was born about 1857. I have nothing firm on her (except from the birth records of their son William b 1875). A Catherine Burns does show up in the 1871 England census as a 14 year old servant, but I'm doubtful it's the same person.

Any suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

I am looking for the Irish connections for William Millet who was born in Wexford Ireland in 1841 and later emigrated to England and joined the Royal Navy as a carpenter. In England he put another 'T' on his name to make him more acceptable to the navel authorities. I believe he was related to a family called Deveraux in Ireland and lived in an area called 'The Faith' in Wexford, although I am not sure of the correct spelling of the area.

I have done some research on my paternal side of my family and my g.g. grandfather

Thomas CONNOR (B:Oct 11, 1842) was born in Ireland (U/K location)

to Thomas CONNOR (no further information known) and Mary STEWART(no further information known).

Thomas CONNOR (Jr.) applied for US Naturalization in Oct 22, 1866 in Houston County, Minnesoata, U.S.A. and became a U.S. citizen in 1871. His Application for U.S. Naturalization shows only that he was from Ireland and his parents names (as noted above) There is no indication of other siblings or location in Ireland as to where he came from. Only other U.S. records show he married one Mary E. CONNOR (maiden name u/k) who was from the State of Vermont, U.S.A and their children Robert Owen CONNOR (g. grandfather), Minnie Gertrude CONNOR, Ella
May CONNOR, Charles C. CONNOR, George H. CONNOR, John CONNOR, and Nora CONNOR. U.S.Federal Census confirms the above but does not indicate any information relative to Ireland, the Minnesota State Census in 1895 is the only record that uses the name O'CONNOR as it relates to all the above. I assume it was due to a clerical error?
I am attempting to locate the area in Ireland in which my ancestors hailed from in order that I can research them
through the appropriate records etc. Any suggestions or information that could help?

Thanks in Advance

Mike Connor

I am looking for any information that would help me identify when the Irwins first came to Carrickleitrim, Co. Leitrim.
The earlist record I have is a George Robert Irwin baptised (1767)
There is a strong possibility that they are descendants of the Irwins that came to Tanragoe (Co.Sligo) but as Carrickleitrim is not far from Roscommon they could be a branch from that Irwin family either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thomas Martin was my great great grandfather. He was born in Ireland 1810 and married Agnus Ross in Scotland. They
had two children born in Scotland, Thomas b. 1842 and John
b. 1850. There may have been another child between Thomas and John. They came to the United States in 1852 and lived in New York. The 1860 Census indicates they had four children - Thomas, John, David b. 1853 NY, Robert b. 1856 NY. They also had a daughter, Margaret b July 1860 NY.
I am trying to find a date of death and place of burial for
Thomas b. 1810. Thomas b. 1842 died in the Civil War. In the 1875 Kasas State Census Agnus is living in Bala, Riley County, Kansas with David, Robert and Maggie. It does not indicate she is a widow. John had gone on to Colorado (he is my great grandfather). The 1880 Federal Census indicates Agnes is widow, living with Robert and Maggie. They then went to Colorado City, El Paso County, Colorado. Maggie married Joe McConnell.
I also would like to know what happened to David and Robert.
In the 1900 Census Agnes is living with her son John, and it indicates she is mother of six childen -two living (John and Maggie)
I am trying to make some connections between these two families:

Francis Dobson m 22 Oct 1813 St Mary's Mohill Margaret Deane and they had at Gortfadda:
Margaret Mary b 1830 d 1900 m James Thompson
Edward
James b 1834
Rebecca m Robert Hood 22 May 1848 Mohill
George of Rosharry b abt 1820 d 1892 m1 Mary Thompson m2 Martha Cosgrove

Mary Dobson b 1794 d 1890 m Robert Geelan of Cloonageeher and they had:
Isabella b 1820 d 1890 m 1844 Thomas Cosgrove (parents of above Martha)
others

As these places were and are small, I am thinking that the Thompsons and Dobsons would be of the same family but I cannot make the connections. Can anyone help me?

Mohill seems to be unable to decide whether it is in Leitrim or Longford so have posted this on both counties!

Isabel Cosgrove

I am trying to track down my grandmother's family from Glenfarne, County Letrim. My research has come to a screeching halt.

Her name was Catherine Keany. Her parents were Bernard and May Keany. They emigrated to Newport Rhode Island in 1906. Catherine had a brother, Patrick and a sister, Margaret.
I have heard there are descedents of Patrick living now in Massachusetts.

Bernard's father's name was John Keany. He died in 1883, but I have no other information about him.

Mary's father was Dominick.

Name is alternatively spelled as Kenney, Keany, Keaney and Kenny.

If anyone has any information or ideas, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Hullo,

my name is Eugene Gilfedder. I am interested to confirm the origins of my surname. I have been told that it derives from "gil/kil..." meaning"servant/devotee" of Peter(viz St Peter).

My ancestors are from Co. Leitrim, and one member of the family has traced the line to a widow "Kilfeather" in the 18th cent.

I have also heard stories of Danish invaders being given this entitlement, i.e." Kil -", on their conversion to christianity. I wonder how old the name is? "Giolla-" I understand to be an old name, as in "Mac Giolla Phoil".

Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated

yours

Eugene (Qld, Australia)

William Moore married Jane Johnstone and had 2 children, Sarah (born 1813) and a son. William was a hospital surgeon. William and Jane died when Sarah was young and was raised by an aunt and her grandmother Johnstone. Both parents were descendents of the Black Douglasses of Scotland. Sarah's great grandfather supposedly fought at Culloden in 1748 and then fled to Ireland. It is said he lived to be 102. Sarah came to Canada at some point and married Henry Smith in 1832 in York, Canada. She died in 1849.
William had a brother, Charles who married Eleanor Douglas in Ireland and had one child (James?) in Ireland before coming to Canada via the US 1818-1820.
I am looking for any information on the family in Ireland (where they were from etc) and would like to find out when Sarah came to Canada and with whom.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Mark
in Surrey, BC

HANLEY relatives in areas surrounding Roscommon - advice appreciated please

My great grandmother was Agnes Hanley, born c.1862, somewhere in Roscommon. Her parents were Patrick Hanley and Mary Connor/Connolly. Agnes married an Englishman in Rhode Island in 1884 and then moved to Birmingham and then London to raise their 10 children. I know of one sister, Annie Maria born c.1868 and of one brother, William, born in 1866 in Salmons Lane, Ballyleague/Cloontuskert. There is a record for William's birth, naming parents as Patrick Hanley and Mary Connor. Unfortunately, living relatives in Rhode Island were unable to supply new information regarding the Hanleys in Roscommon. I would appreciate any help you are able to offer perhaps either as possible descendants of Patrick and Mary, with any knowledge of relevant cemetery transcriptions in the area or with any other ideas as to how to further the search. Thanks for taking the time to consider this request. Ljay

Hi! I'm looking for information on members of this McGovern family who did not emigrate to Ontario Canada in the mid-1800's. I am hoping to visit Ireland in a year or so and would love to be able to connect with family that remained. Philip McGovern was my great-great-great grandfather. He was born in 1808 and died in Ireland in 1857. He was married to Mary McTiernan who left Ireland after his death to live with son James (Annie) in Mara, Ontario Cananda. My great-great grandfather - another of Philip and Mary's sons - was named Felix (b. 1833) and also emigrated to Ontario Canada. He married Catherine Tracy - and was widowed according to the Roma, Ontario North 1881 census. Felix had 10 children - the youngest were twins (b. 1879) named Phillip and Alice - who was my great-grandmother. She married Joseph Jon Woods and they moved to northern Minnesota (Duluth/Virginia area). Joseph died in 1952 and Alice in 1967. Their children were Royal, Katherine, Lillian, and Michael (my paternal grandfather. There is also an interesting story about Joseph Woods that I would like to substantiate if anyone has heard anything about a hotel fire in Ontario Canada in approx. 1879-80. Would love to connect with USA family too! You can also reach me at woodstar1@aol.com

I am looking for the family of John Lowe and his wife Mary McCormick. John died in 1866, and Mary died in 1864. They left a family of children that included: William who married Meg Hutchinson in 1889. He owned a small shop in Ferbane. Thomas came to the United Sates and sent for his sisters. Elizabeth and Mary Ann married into our family of Dawsons in Illinois. Thomas was the first husband of my great grandmother, Bessie. Thomas died in a train accident around 1880 in Illinois. Bessie then married the brother of her 2 sisters husband. So Thomas' widow is married to Edward Dawson, Mary Ann is married to Michael Dawson, and Elizabeth is married to Henry Dawson. Any help with the Lowe family back in Ireland would be a great help. Contact me directly at:
joe.dawson@webmadeeasy.net

Thank you for your time.
Joe Dawson

My greatgrandfather CHARLES CAVANAUGH, as a 7 year old, came over from Leitrim to the US on the ship "Underwriter" in 1853, in the company of three other young Cavanaughs, named Lawrence, Daniel and Mary, all under the stewardship of a Robert David, age 25. Charles' parents were named BERNARD and ANNE MCMAHON Cavanaugh. Does anyone have a possible link to this family?

Thomas McMahon Clare to Australia

My great grandfather was Thomas McMahon, born in County Clare in 1846. He emigrated to Australia (unsure what year) and married Margaret Sullivan in 1872 at Coolac, NSW. He gave his occupation as miner. He left following the birth of two sons, my grandfather Otho Patrick (born 1873) and Michael Peter (born 1875). I am especially interested in Thomas' background (where born in Clare - any living relatives, or anyone who knows of the family) and perhaps his later movements.
I believe a Thomas McMahon came to Australia from Doonass around the mid 1860's but have no way of verifying his relevance.
Any ideas?
McMorrow Murray

My mother had 3 uncles who emigrated to the states around 1910, James, Owen and Patrick McMorrow. We know that Patrick definitely changed his name to Murray and I suspect the others did too. They were born in Greignafarna, Co. Leitrim, Ireland around the late 1880's to late 1890's. I have managed to make contact with some Murrays decended from Patrick who now live in Washington DC and we believe Owen went to Connecticut where he had a large family. It is possible Owen married a Flanagan as did Patrick as there was a story that they married two sisters from Leitrim by the name of Flanagan. Would love to know more if anyone can help.
