Just recently I've been able to confirm that an ancestor family came from Longford to Canada. I'd appreciate some advice about what resources to consult for more information. I think I've reached the end of what I can do from Canada.

The story:
Edward Rodgers, b 12 Apr 1811 to William Rodgers and Frances Morgan; ch 15 Apr 1811. (IGI)
Came to Canada at date unknown.
Married Margaret Curry (b 1818 Co. Down) on 23 Feb 1836 at St. Peter's Erindale (CoE) in Peel Co. Ontario. (Marriage record)
The had a raft of kids and settled in Garafraxa Tp, Wellington Co. Ontario. (1851 Census, Land Records)
Edward re-married after Margaret's death and the Marriage Record clearly notes the about parentage and Co. Longford as his place of birth.

There was also a brother William whose Death Certificate notes him born in Longford.

My personal interest is in sister Margaret whose IGI notes b 1 May 1817; ch 30 May 1817 and the same parents. She is my direct ancestor.

There is also word of brother James, but I haven't been able to connect him as securely.

Family legend suggests that the three brothers were working for, but not in, the British army stationed in the area. Could anyone expand on where to find information like that?

Any thoughts on tracking these Rodgers in Longford?

Judith

HANLEY relatives in areas surrounding Roscommon - advice appreciated please?

My great grandmother was Agnes Hanley, born c.1862, somewhere in Roscommon. Her parents were Patrick Hanley and Mary Connor/Connolly. Agnes married an Englishman in Rhode Island in 1884 and then moved to Birmingham and then London to raise their 10 children. I know of one sister, Annie Maria born c.1868 and of one brother, William, born in 1866 in Salmons Lane, Ballyleague/Cloontuskert. There is a record for William's birth, naming parents as Patrick Hanley and Mary Connor. Unfortunately, living relatives in Rhode Island were unable to supply new information regarding the Hanleys in Roscommon. I would appreciate any help you are able to offer perhaps either as possible descendants of Patrick and Mary, with any knowledge of relevant cemetery transcriptions in the area or with any other ideas as to how to further the search. Thanks for taking the time to consider this request. Ljay

Help - the Longford area

I am trying to gather information on my Grandmother's family and am having a hard time as Irish information seems a bit tricky to find especially when you know very little in the first place! I have found a memoriam card with Drumlish listed as the place of residence and my father thinks that his mother came from the actual town of Longford - now I understand that there is a town called Longford as well as the actual county? Now, if I am correct - does anyone know how close Longford and Drumlish are to each other?
Also, does anyone know of the famous greyhound, Mick the Miller? My father thinks she was from the area he was born. Does anyone know where that was? I've been looking on the internet and all I can see is 'Ireland'.
Thanks so much for your help!

Does anyone have any information on the Farrell's from Moate or Motte Farrell? My father is Michael Farrell his sister is Selina (she became a nun, sister Mary Oliver). The local church was in Clonbrony and they had a farm (small holding of about 16 acres). Bernard Farrell married a Mary Ann Dunigan (unsure of this spelling)they went to America in the late 20's early 30's but I beleive they returned to Ireland mid 1930's sadly they died in cica 1935 so Michael & Selina were raised by Bernard's brother Patrick & his sister Bridget, neither of whom married. I beleive their is another brother but I am unsure of his name.

They were related to the Feeleys or Fenney's (again unsure of spelling sorry).

Look forward to ay help or assistance anyone can provide.

Corry Family

I have two ancestors that I have traced back to Ireland in my family tree... their names are Cope Corry and Newcomen Corry. They were probably brothers and their father's name was Cope Corry as well. I have found a couple of references to them in County Longford. I have found a Cope Corry listed as a tenant on the lands of L.H. King Harman in 1855. I have found Newcomen Corry listed in the Longford Militia Muster in 1832. I have been unable to locate much else. I am interested in finding out anything on these individuals or these family lines. I also have reason to believe that the Corry's were in County Fermanagh as well, but this is the first connection I have found in Irish records thus far. The family settled in Michigan in bits and pieces between 1855 and 1870.

Thanks!!

Anybody with any Furey/Fury interest within the Longford region. My ggrandfather is a Patrick Fury who married a Mary Campbell and gave birth to at least 2 children Cornelius 14/8/1866 (in Bunlahy) and Catherine 11/9/1868. There is another Patrick Fury married to a Mary Caulfield around the same time in the same Granard area so it starts to get confusing. Any Longford Furey/Fury details would be greatly appreciated. I can find nothing about it on the web, except a football team, the Shroid Slashers. She also writes that her father, mother and two siblings were buried at Mothill (Mohill?). Her father was William Kane (Keane) and her mother Helen Greene. She was unsure what year she was born, but we believe it was around 1895/96.
Thanks!

I am looking for my roots in county Longford. My grandmother Rosanna came to New York in 1900 and her sister Annie came in the same year. Her sister Mary came over but I do not know what year. Her niece Marian O'Connor came over sometime in the 1920s. If you know of any place that I could trace them in Ireland please let me know.
Thanks
Bruce Murphy

Robert Moffett - Weaver circa 1820 County Longford- his family line
My great-great grandfather was William Moffett from County Longford. William’s father was Robert Moffett, a weaver, but the name of his mother is still unknown to us. It is her name that we seek. From an early document, William states he was from Longford but it is not clear whether that refers to County Longford or to the town land. Whenever William gave his age it changed his birth year. We estimate that he was born in 1818 (plus or minus 5 years) to Robert Moffett and the unknown mother. The earliest age we have on him is 28 in April of 1849 making his birth year about 1821. That MAY be the closest to accurate that we have. At maturity William was 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighed 130 pounds, with brown hair, and gray eyes. William would have left County Longford and Ireland a few years before 1849 and possibly never returned. We have no idea whether he left on his own or was accompanied but In 1849 William married a Mary Lester who was from Aghnagore, County Longford, Ireland. At the time of his birth, William’s last name could have been Moffet(t), Moffat(t), or Moffit(t). Descendants of William now spell it Moffett, probably because when William learned to write his name that is the way he spelled it. William’s wife Mary’s last name could have been spelled Lester, Leicester, and probably other ways that I have not realized yet.

Please contact me if you can be of any help, we have exhausted every avenue available and please consult your relatives.

Bob Moffett rcmick1@verizon.net

Longford marriage records? Burns-Healy marriage 1842.

Hi, just wondering what kind of information would be included in a Longford marriage record from this date? My ggg-grandparents John Burns and Ann Healy/Hailly were married in Longford on 29 April 1842 (don't know the exact location). I'm trying to find out who were John's parents.

John and Anne immigrated to Scotland between 1842-49 (I'm guessing because of the potato famine). I know from Anne Healy's death certificate that her parents were Bartholomew Healy, farmer, and Ann Beryn, but after searching Scotland's People I can't find John Burns's death record. So I thought my next move would be to try and obtain their marriage record. I live in Australia so any advice on how to apply for a marriage record in Longford would also be appreciated.

Thanks!
Anthea.

On 29 May 1885 James, John, Margaret and Peter Flood arrived on the Baltic from Ireland. Margaret married an Alfred Knowles about 1883 and lived in various places in Brooklyn until her death in 1953. Margaret was born 1871 Abbeyshrule, County Longford. Her father was James Flood, son of Thomas Flood, both of Rath, Co. Longford. Are these 4 Floods the same family? Does anyone have any info?

Hello, I'm trying to trace my Great Great Grandfather Peter Mulvey, who was born in "Longford, Ireland" around 1810-1815, and went to America in the 1830s.

He settled in central Pennsylvania first in Scranton-Wilkes-Barre area, then Danville, then became a farmer in Williamsport, PA.

He married Katherine Maloney, possibly in Ireland or in America.
He died in 1879 in Williamsport.
Anyone know any Mulveys in Longford, or know a good researcher I could contact. I plan to visit there this summer or next.

In baptismal records name was only spelled Finnan & only one record may be same people as Finnin marriage record. Does anyone know why a different spelling would come about? I found no records spelled Finnin other than the 2 marriages in any other church records there were several spelled Finnan? Carrie Finnin Hogue

Age 39yrs. 8 days died Feb 23 1893.I think that Michael Feeney born in Longford Ireland is my gggrandfather.I am hoping to get more Feeney males to get their DNA tested.Once we find our genetic cousins we can compare our family trees to see were we are connected.I had my DNA tested at familytreedna.com if you have tested somewhere else you can put DNA in a free server network to compare I am on three of them.
Thanks Michael J Feeney
Hello James,

Thank you so much for your note......as I am new to exploring County Longford, I really haven't a clue whereabouts Ballymahon is. I am more than interested in where your Catherine Keegan was born and possibly her birth year? I will now search about to see exactly where Ballymahon is. I do know there seems to be many Keegans in a general area.

Thank you so much....
Janet

I am looking for information on my ancestors James b.1677, George, b1719, Alexander, and William Thompson b 1695. The family were wealthy Landowners and cattle owners. James came to America in 1729 with the Clinton party on the George and Ann. They got off the ship at Cape Cod, Ma as the captain of the ship had tried to starve them to death so he could steal their money. After paying a large ransom the Thompson's and Clinton's got off the boat. They settled in Orange Co. Ny.

Can someone tell me how to get info from Ireland on them?
I would love to know about their lives in Ireland.

Thanks
Kathy in Iowa

John LEAVY/Jane BYRNE, Longford to Ontario, 1830s

John Leavy, son of Patrick Leavy and Mary Bambrick (or Bamick), was born in Co. Longford in 1801. He married Jane Byrne, born circa 1811. They had three children in Ireland, before emigrating (mid 1830s) to the Pakenham area of Lanark Co., Ontario, Canada, where they had another 6 or 7 children. John Leavy died in 1881 and is buried at Indian Hill Cemetery at Pakenham, where his headstone reads “native of Longford Ireland.”

John Leavy and Jane Byrne had the following children:

Patrick, born c. 1830 (in Ire.), married Elizabeth Barr
Mary, born c. 1832 (in Ire.), married Alexander Michael Moran
John, born c. 1833 (in Ire.) married: 1. Alice Farry; 2. Catherine Cavanagh
Thomas, born c. 1835
John, born 17 March 1837
Ellen, born 2 January 1841
Michael, born c. 1845
Jane, born 2 May 1846, married Patrick McGonigal
Elizabeth, born 22 March 1850, married Henry McGarry
William?

John Leavy had a brother Peter, born circa 1795, who also emigrated to Canada.

In the family records that I have seen, the surname is variously recorded as Leavy, Leavey, Levi, Levy, and Lavey.

I’m trying to figure out from where in Longford this family originated. Any hints or suggestions would be much appreciated.

She is listed as the mother of Bridget McDonald.
I am trying to see if she is also related to Mary Herbert who emigrated to America and had a daughter Mildred in America in 1863. I wonder if Hubert got mispelt to Herbert ?
Is there anywhere I can find a record of Rose in Longford at the time of her birth and later ?

Well after almost three years of posting requests on the internet I finally made a connection and truly found our family in Ballymahon, Longford County, Ireland, what a wonderful day
that was.

Malichy Mulledy (Mulleady/Mullady) was born February 21, 1864 in Ballymahon to Daniel Mulleady and Catherine Horsey Mulledy who had eight other children. Daniel's father was named Patrick Mulleady (est b 1815 to 1822). My new found cousin is helping me with the information from the Parish Priest and I wanted to thank all of you who post. It will help people find those they have lost through time and history. I am so happy to have been reconnected with mine.

Sincerely,

Susan Mulledy

Looking for Lawrences of Longford County - Ireland 1800's
I am planning to visit Longford County. I am from Canada and especially would like to find if there are any relatives of Samuel and Margaret Lawrence from Longford County. (I know Samuel’s brother was Robert Lawrence, married to Anne). Samuel’s son, William (born in1862), joined the force (Royal Irish Constabulary), on April 6th, 1880 at the age of 18 for a very short time, his number was 45302 . He settled in Langley, B.C., Canada, in 1883, joining his sister (Margaret) who was already there with her husband.

I have some baptismal records from the Parish Church of Kilcormmick, in diocese of Ardagh in the County of Longford. All ceremonies were performed by T.Henry.

March 5th 1849 Susan Lawrence – daughter of Samuel & Margaret Lawrence

July 2nd 1854 – Margaret Lawrence (daughter of Samuel & Margaret.

Aug 1852 - Sarah Annie Lawrence (daughter of Samuel & Margaret)

March 5 1854 Susan – daughter of Robert and Anne Lawrence

Oct 7 185? Isaac – son of Robert and Anne

I do not have the baptismal record for William (born 1862), son of Margaret and Samuel Lawrence, brother of Susan and Margaret, from Longford County from whom I was descended.

He had a son, Glover Samuel Lawrence (born in 1897), settled in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada and went back to visit relatives in Ireland after serving in the 1st world war in France (which is why I think we must still have relatives in your area). His son is my father, William Lawrence (born in 1931) of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada.

My father wrote to the Rev. B.W. Kingston, the rectory Tashinny, Ballymahon , Co. Longford, in 1988 and was told that there appeared in regististry three or more Lawrence families in the Kenagh area (Kilcommick) and that marriage and burial records do exist. He mentioned the Enniskillen registers (1666-1871) from the R.C.B. Library, Braemor Park, Rathgar, Dublin 6. He said that there was no doubt that present day people living in Cartrons, Clough and the Island, etc., would be able to tell us where the Lawrence homesteads were, as such details are usually passed on in local lore.

If you are able to help me research, I would appreciate knowing costs, time, etc. Basically, all I want to know is if there are any relatives there of Samuel and Margaret, (or Robert & Anne), so we can correspond with them and possibly meet them and also to have someone tell us the area where our ancestors lived so we can visit the land. I would also love to know if you can find any other info tracing Samuel and Margaret's birth and death info, parents, family tree. (I do have the basic Lawrence family tree with hits roots in England and how the name came to Longford)

Any help or contacts you could give at all would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Cathy Cole

(nee Lawrence)

Am looking for a Mathew Doris that was born in Longfod county. Good chance that the spelling of the name has been changed. On the US census records I have see all 3 surnames on the records. I know where he was born and that he was a R.C preist before coming to America. He had a wife named Ann. One family memeber has her name listed as McGuire but nothing to follow up on. If anyone can help with where to find a listing that would show him in the church or a record that would show marraige or birth for either of them would be great. Even if a hint as to where to look. Thanks in advance

I believe Rosaline was born in Mar 1859 and Ella in May 1852 (but she changes her age on the records I've found.) The were both in the 1890 Philadelphia City Directory as hairdressers. It is possible that they also made wigs. Ella was my Great-great grandmother.

Bernard Farrell

I'm looking for any information about my ggg-grandfather, Bernard Farrell(also listed as Bryan/Brine on a few census documents, born around 1828 in County Longford). He was married to Catherine Keegan - born around 1837(also possibly in County Longford), & had 1 son(name is illegible on census info), born around 1850 in Ireland before emigrating to the US and eventually settling in Rensselaer County, New York. Once in NY he had 7 more children(2 of which i believe are with his second wife Sarah, born in Scotland):

-James b. 1854
-Catherine b. 1856
-Bernard b. 1859
-John b. 1862
-Mary b. 1862
-Bridget b. 1864
-Patrick b. 1871

I believe when they came to North America, they came through Nova Scotia & then came down into New York.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

John Walsh and Letitia Hewitt

Hello,

I am looking for information about my great x4 grandparents, John Walsh and Letitia Hewitt. They lived in the village of Canaan Airdes, near the town of Moat, County of Longford, Ireland. They raised ten children there.

I do not know the birthdate or deathdate of John Walsh, only that he died in Ireland. After his death, his surviving children (eight) emigrated to Canada, perhaps together, perhaps seperately. Letitia, his wife, came to Canada in 1847, at age 64, so she would have been born @ 1783. She traveled with her son Robert, his wife Mary Tanner, and their daughter Alice. She lived with Robert in Bearbrook, Ontario, Canada, until her death in 1863.

The children of John Walsh and Letitia Hewitt were John, William, Richard, George, Robert, Letitia, Mary Ann, Joseph, Alice and Eliza. Here is the only information I have on the children...

Three children were married in Ireland- William to Hannah Gardiner, George to Elizabeth Quirn Martin, and Robert to Mary Tanner. Alice died in Ireland the night the battle of Waterloo was won, which as I figure it was June 18, 1815.

John and Letitia's son Richard was my ancestor- he was born in 1813, in Ireland.

If anyone can provide any information or leads on this family, I would be immensely grateful.

Thank you,

Dave Irving perfessordave@hotmail.com
