Upon arriving in the US, he found work with the railroad and the family eventually settled in Iowa.

Thomas was the son of James Halpin.
Would love to hear from anyone related to, or with information concerning the Kieran family of Coole Townland, Ardee, circa 1850-1930 and perhaps later than that (Principally, Matthew Kieran, his wife Ellen (Fey, Fegan, Fagen or Hagen) and family).

Newly acquired information after visiting Ardee and environs:
Matthew Kieran - probably Matthew Kieran born 1831 at Dundalk. parents: Patrick Kieran and Catherine Hoey. Died between 1901 and 1911 Censuses, although a Matt Kieran born at Drogheda 1832 is also a candidate (still awaiting death certificate info which should confirm either or).

Wife: Ellen (Fegan?) died between 1896 and 1901.
Both of above buried at Ballapousta cemetery, near Ardee, with sons: James, Joe and Matthew.

The family nickname was "Gull Kierans", presumably to distiguish them from other Kieran families in the Ardee area.

I'm trying to piece together a puzzle about when my Gt. Grandparent(s) crossed the water to live in Hebburn, Co. Durham. EDWARD SCANLAN married ELIZABETH REILY - don't know when, don't know where! They had four children that I know of, all Baptised in Drogheda - MARY (1928), JUDITH (1930), PATT/Patrick (1835), then a big gap to
CHRISTOPHER (1848). There may have been other children in the meantime.
I would love to find out if Edward died before Elizabeth, with only Patrick & Christopher (as far as I know) moved to England. Elizabeth died in Hebburn, aged 77, in 1882. Her death certificate states Widow of Edward Scanlan, Brickmaker!.
Any help or guidance on where to look next, gratefully received.
Thanks

Ralph was born at Drogheda, Ireland. I have traced his ancestors and part of his path through the 1891 England Census and an Obituary in The Irish Times: following his death in 1902 he was buried at Beaulieu Cemetery. However, I can't find if he married, had children, or where he lived before his death - I cannot access the 1901 Irish Census.

Ralph was the son of George Charles Smyth and Ada Louise Mary Lyons-Montgomery, of Newtownstalaban, Drogheda. He had three brothers and seven sisters, none of the sisters married. I have traced one of the brothers, Saville Lambert Smyth to Birmingham where he died in 1956.

Any help is appreciated.

I am looking for the decedents of Charles and Mary Ann (nee Donnelly) Dearden of Drogheda Ireland in County Louth. Their children were John Hugh-born 1864, Mary Jane - 1868, James Joseph - 1869 and Joseph -1876. We know that Joseph later came to live in Liverpool. I am trying to trace the other siblings and the origins of the parents Charles and Mary Ann. The names of these children and parents are completely common and makes the search more difficult but hopefully the fact they came from Drogheda will be a good clue.

They came to America sometime in the 1850's. I know that there was a daughter Margaret who married Bernard Kirk. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Karen E. Ford

I'm looking to find out what parish or parishes incorporated Milltown, District of Dromishen, Union of Dundalk, Co. Louth. I have a death record from 1870 that may be my great great grandfather, however the record does not contain his wife's name or any other data to verify it. I am hoping if I can find the parish, there will be a record of the death with names of wife, children, burial location, etc.
Thank you for your help.
Marie

Is anyone researching CAMPBELL's in County Louth? I'm still searching for family of my GG-Grandmother ANN CAMPBELL who married Patrick KINLAN/KINDELAN. They were born about 1796-98. They lived in town of Kilsaran, County Louth, just down the road south of Dundalk. Their babies were baptized in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kilsaran. I know many records were lost early on. She was listed as being "born Protestant" on her daughter Mary Ann's marriage record of 1865 in New Albany, Indiana, USA. It stated Patrick was deceased. I assume Ann Campbell's parents were Protestant. Ann died sometime after 1870 and before 1880 in Louisville, Kentucky, USA.
Jane

Louth County Guide and Directory

Per article in 1999 issue of "Irish Roots," genealogy periodical, Bassett's "Louth Guide and Directory" was first published in 1886. Its title page describes it as "a book for manufacturers, merchants, traders, landowners, farmers, tourists, anglers and sportsmen generally." It is, of course, much more than that. Today, it is used to research into genealogy, the history of local businesses, the professions, etc.

A look through its 418 pages will show that very few businessess have survived from 1886 to the present day. A major feature of the book was the advertisements (over 250 of them). As well as being of considerable interest in themselves, they tell us a good deal about shopping in the days of our grandparents and great-grandparents.

Most directories confine themselves to the larger centers of population, but Bassett takes in all the villages as well. He even went outside the county boundaries to include Inniskeen in Co. Monaghan and Forkhill and Ballsmill in Co. Armagh.

Since copies of the original edition are extremely scarce, the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society has issued a facsimile reprint printed on 100 gram, off-white, acid-free paper and bound in green cloth with the front cover and spine blocked in gold. The dust jacket carries a reproducion of the title page and spine. Per "Irish Roots," launched last October, the quality of the reprint has been the subject of much favorable comment and at 18 pounds it represents an excellent value. Copies are available from the Society at:

County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society
5 Oliver Plunkett Park, Dundalk, IR.

Add three pounds for postage to Ireland and UK, five pounds abroad.

Parish of Kilinory

Could someone tell me where this Parish "Kilinory" might be located? I realize it could be misspelled. There was a burial record in Louisville, Kentucky, USA for the following person from Ireland:

St. John's Catholic Cemetery
"Patrick Clendon"
10/8/1865
Age 51
Parish of Kilinory, Ireland

I'm wondering too if the last name isn't "Kinlan" and was written like it sounded to someone, or was misread. I'm still looking for where my GG-Grandfather Patrick Kinlan is buried. (He had lived in Kilsaran, County Louth, Ireland.) His daughter Mary Ann Kinlan Clements is buried in that same cemetery is why I thought it could be her father. Her father was listed as dead on her marriage certificate dated 17 Aug 1865. I am not sure if the date of death, as written above, for this Patrick Clendon was October 8, 1865 or August 10, 1865.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Jane

Monasterboice Cemetery Inscription

Recently on a trip to Ireland, my wife and I were in the Monasterboice Cemetery as tourists. I saw an inscription that intriqued me and wrote down the details; unfortunately, I lost the note and can't remember the name. Does anyone have information about Monasterboice that might help me?

The inscription was on a modern gravestone, probably less than 6 rows from the front wall and roughly in the middle, going side to side. It had a man's name and birth/death dates and off to the right side had a combination of numbers and letters, something like RTK132. There was nothing that suggested what the numbers and letters might refer to. It is the numbers and letters that intrigue me; what do they mean?

Thanks for assistance.

John McCrory, Raleigh, NC

Lookups Offered for Tombstone Inscriptions in Fochart Graveyard

I have a CD that has tombstone inscriptions in the Focart Graveyard and will be glad to do lookups for you. Please note the inscriptions on this CD are only for Fochart and no other cemetery in County Louth.

The following information appears on the CD regarding the cemetery:

Louth: Fochart - Tombstone Inscriptions

Tombstone Inscriptions in Fochart Graveyard, Co.Louth

Transcribed by Reverend Diarmuid Mac Iomhair

"The following list shows inscriptions as they appear on 31 Oct 1967 , including some of a temporary nature intended to mark a grave pending the crection of a permanent monument."

"A few inscriptions are partly through damage to the stones. Others are hard to decipher because of weathering or, in the case of certain eighteenth-century granite stones, of a granulation of the surface which seriously blurs the outline of the letters. In the present transcription, the indecipherable elements are indicated by a dash or dashes, without however intending these to be commensurate with the amount of text missing; and in the case of inscriptions difficult to read, the several lines are distinguished by downward strokes."

"The number shown after each inscription is identical with the number painted on the stone itself. Numbering commences at the east end of the graveyard, where most of the older stones are to be found. Among these old stones are several instances of the small, stubby, "penal" type of cross, as well as of the incised cross with splayed ends that is usually reckoned to be medieval or even earlier."

"This list does not claim to be anything more than an accurate transcription of surviving inscriptions. Other than that it affords no evidence of proprietorship or identification of particular graves."

"Fochart Sub-committee of the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society are deeply grateful to Mr. Cormac G. McGahon, of Messrs. John F. McGahon & Sons, Architects, Dundalk, who drew the plan of the graveyard for this publication."

Hello everyone! I cannot remember how I found this link but it has been extremely helpful. Downside, if there is one, is that search is free, but you have to pay to access the record. Fee is based on the Euro which with the US dollar down it is kind of expensive, but was worth it for me.

Here is the Link:

http://louth.brsgenealogy.com/index.php?&set=yes

Now, I need your help please. I found my Great Grandfather Joseph Sweeney's Baptism and my Great Great Grandparent's wedding in Parish/District Mellifont, Co. Louth. Residence is listed as Lugboy. Is anyone familiar with this residence? Is that a village?

Where would I write to obtain more information on this family?

Thanks,

Karen
Baton Rouge, La.

WALTER DUNSMUIR, OF DUNDALK

According to his death cert. my G-Grandfather Walter DUNSMUIR was born in Dundalk, Co. Louth 21 Nov 1883. His parents were Charles and Elisabeth (nee Watson) DUNSMUIR. He came to New Zealand at about the age of 5 and died in Christchurch in 1965. I confess to knowing almost nothing about genealogy research in Ireland and would appreciate any help to locate records for this family.
Thanks in advance,
Lisa in New Zealand.

I believe my gggrandfather James Johnston died in or near Co. Monaghan between 1900 and 1906, when he would have been in his 80s. I can't find him in the civil death index, but I have found an entry in the wills index for a James Johnston, 26 Bridge Street, Dundalk, died Feb. 18. 1906. Can anyone suggest a way I could find a 1901 census entry or an obituary for this person?

Diane
