We have a new member in the Corrigan yDNA Project.

Our new member can trace back to Co Mayo, here is his direct male line;
Kit A00001
James Corrigan, b 1828, Burris, Manulla, Mayo, Ireland, marr Mary Mitchell
Michael Corrigan, b 1852, Mayo, Ireland, marr Mary McDermott
Joseph F Corrigan, Sr b 1895 Pittsburgh, Pa, marr Helen Kirchner

He has no close matches in the group as yet, and his results indicate he is part of the R1b subgroup "R - North West Irish Type".
(R1b is the main genetic haplogroup for Ireland, reaching up to over 90% in some areas.)
Our new member has been placed in the "Unmatched R1b NW Irish Type Group" until he has a close match.

We have 6 Corrigan members who appear to be in this R1b - subgroup, with 3 from Co Mayo and 1 from Co Roscommon.
Three of these members are in a tighter group indicating they shared a common ancestor within the last few hundred years.

You can see all results and lineages for the group on our new website;
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/corrigan/results

Regards
Frances
Looking for information (parents? siblings?) about Patrick and Margaret MULLARKEY MCHALE. I have baptismal records for three of their children: James, 14 December 1828; Patrick, 26 March 1831; Edward, 29 November 1835. At that time they lived in Parish Kilfian in Tonroe and then Springhill. They were also the parents of: William b.c.1822; Michael b.c.1827; Hannah b.c.1836; John b.c.1841. They emigrated before 1850 and family tradition says that Patrick died at sea. Margaret and her children came to Oneida County and then Lewis County, New York. Margaret died 8 May 1857 at Highmarket, Lewis County. Her tombstone tells that she was a native of Parish Kilfian, County Mayo, Ireland.

I'm looking for descendants of Michael Hogan from County Mayo who immigrated to Chicago, IL around the late 1890s.
According to his 1928 death certificate, Michael was born November 15, 1871 in Mayo and his parents were Thomas Hogan and Mary Brown.

Michael married Catherine Gallagher (b. 1876, parents were John Gallagher and mother, Bridget Kelly. d. 1926) before 1910. There is the possibility that Catherine was a widow when she married Michael. On the 1910 US census, under the personal description for marital status, M1 is noted by Michael's name and M2 is noted by Catherine's name. There is a son Thomas who is not listed with them in the 1910 census but is listed with them in the 1920.

Thomas married Elizabeth Fahey in 1926. They had a son John Michael Hogan who was born April 1928.

Nora Hopkins FitzGerald

My ancestors from Co. Mayo included a Donovan family from Belderg, Doonfeeny Parish, Tirawley.

This family was the only one of the name to appear in Griffith's survey. My great-grandmother, Mary, was the daughter of Timothy Donovan and Margaret Neal.

They lived on the tract which was used for the National schoolhouse, built in 1870. That site is now the home of the Caulfield family; of whom Dr. James (Shamus) is member. He headed Mayo 5000 and located the famous pre-historic fields of that area.

Any information on the Donovan/Neal families would be helpful.

My g/grandfather Patrick Daly bc 1837 was in the London Metropolitan Police Force 1865-1881. His joining papers show he was born in Kilmore Moy, Ballina, Co. Sligo - however maps show Ballina to be in Co Mayo. Patrick married (no marriage found), Jane Osmond of Brighthelmston (now Brighton) Sussex U.K. They had six known children - Mary L. b 1878, Ernest P. b 1872, Maud b. 1874, William Osmond b. 1875 (my grandfather) Henry James b 1879 John Francis b. 1880. On 1881 census they were living in Chelsea London. I know Henry was living in London in 1914. Daly does not appear to be a common name in Mayo or Sligo. Does this ring any bells for any one?

My greatgrandmother, Mary McAndrew, was born in County Mayo, Ireland and immigrated to the US around 1865 (according to the census).

Back in the 1970s, I'd found that she came over with several siblings (mostly brothers as I remember) ... and I'd traced the brothers to Pittsburgh, PA.
In fact, I even managed a meeting with one of the descendant's families.

Can't find any of that info now.

I have some old letters between Mary and the Mother Superior of a Convent in Bellmullet, Ireland re a brother who'd remained behind ... and, at the time of the correspondence, was ill (and later died) in the convent. Letters to the convent in 1959 (when I was a child) revealed that this brother left 27 children upon his death!!!

I'd like to make contact with McAndrew descendants from County Mayo ... as well as descendants of the brothers who migrated to Pittsburgh!

You can contact me at:
mcowan @ erols.com

DALYs in Mayo

Hi,
Just putting info out here in hopes that it strikes a chord with someone. My DALYs who migrated to the US were: John (ca. 1795-1843), James (ca. 1800-1843) and Lawrence (ca. 1803-1905). John and James seem to arrive in Ohio, USA ca. 1833 according to a land purchase. They did not arrive on the same ship, but they connected somewhere after arrival, and were naturalized in Ohio at the same time. John may have been here longer because he files "fist papers" in Ohio.

Lawrence shows on the 1900 US Census that he came to the US in 1830. There are no records of him in Ohio until about 1845, when he is naturalized. He probably arrived in Ohio abt. 1844, after James died, as he married James' widow.

I believe the 3 were brothers, and I've been told that their father's name may have been Michael, as this was the "adopted" middle-name used by Lawrence on my Grandfather's Wedding Certificate.

In 1859, a Michael DALY arrives in Boston, marries Catherine ROURKE(O'Rourke), who arrived in 1861 and by 1863 their first child is born in Ohio. They lived on farmland owned by Lawrence. It's very possible that Michael, born ca. 1830 is also a brother to the other 3 DALYs. His birthdate rules him out as father of the other 3.

John and James could sign their names, but Lawrence could not read or wrtie, and signed documents with an 'X'. Michael could read and write, and may have sent a letter or 2 home to Ireland.

A curious thing that has always "bothered" me is that while James is the younger of the John/James team, he is the one who purchases the land in Ohio, sells some of it to John, and then moves to another "town" across the road from John. I would think that the older of the two would have been the one to invest in land and sell it. If anyone has any insight as to why this might have happened, I appreciate your comments.

Also, If any of this sounds even vaguely familiar, please let me know.

Many thanks,
Trish

I know that she married John Knox who is also from Ireland, but not sure if this took place before migration to the states. They had 4 children Ellen, Ann, John and James. I think her father was Patrick Reddy and her mother was Ellen. I do not know this for certain, just information received from another individual. Any information you may have will greatly assist in my searches as I am at a stand still. Oh, and I have information from Anna & John down the line, just nothing further back. Thanks to anyone who can help. Amanda

I am trying to trace my family tree and I have gotten as far back as my great great grandfather. His name is Thomas O'Toole and I believe he was married in Wesport Parish in 1850 to Sarah O'Donel. According to a copy of an 1880 Census of the town of Clinton, Massachusetts, I have learned they came to America between 1859-1864 and arrived in New York with their 5 daughters. They had a son while in NY and then 2 more sons when they moved to Clinton, MA. I am looking to see if I can find out exactly where they came from Ireland and when. Any info or links would be appreciated.

Daly: James, John, Lawrence and Michael

I've recently been told that our DALYs may be from Mayo. James and John came to the US ca. 1830, and by 1833 bought land in Ohio. John was born ca. 1795-1798. James was born ca. 1800. James, although the younger brother bought the land, then sold it to John. John had a wife named Almira. In 1843, both men died. By 1846, Lawrence appears in Ohio and marries James' widow, Ann Marie Moran. I believe these 3 to be brothers. Lawrence lives to be 98-102 years old depending on his birth year, which ranges from 1803-1812. The 1900 US Census says he came here in 1830. I can't find the men arriving together, and they may have travelled between 1827-1830. Ann Marie was born in New York or Massachusets ca. 1815, and she dies in 1860. My great-gm, Mary Egan marries Lawrence, 1862. Mary Egan came to the US in 1851. She settled in Illinois, but then moved to Ohio after marrying my Lawrence. Her father's name was Pat, and she had a brother, John.

In 1860, a Michael Daly arrives in Boston, marries a Catherine O'Rourke who arrived in 1861, and then they migrate to Ohio by 1862. They live on Lawrence's land for about 10 years, then move to another area of the town...seems that he did not like farming. They eventually moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Michael may be a half brother to Lawrence, as they probably shared a father. Michael was born in 1835 and died in 1900. Lawrence used the name Michael for a middle name on my grandfather's wedding certificate, and I've been told that in this period of time, there weren't "middle names".

All this leads me to believe that these 4 boys had a father named Michael Daly. He might have also been named James or John. Other names that were used in our family was Francis and Frances, Patrick and Patricia. There was a Patrick Daly, Jr. mentioned in James' will in 1842, but I haven't been able to track him on any Census.

If any of this sounds familiar, please let me know.

McEvaddy/Mulroy Family Swinford/Bohola

I am looking for any information on the family of Mary McEvaddy, b. abt 1862. She married Thomas Mulroy also from that area. They had a farm in Laughtmacdurkan/Laughterdurkan. By 1911, according to the census, she was widowed. Their children were Thomas Mulroy, Bridget (Della)Conlon, Mary Ellen Hartnett, Catherine, Sarah Agnes and Patrick Mulroy, my grandfather, b. Jan 1897. Thomas Jr. and Catherine stayed in Ireland. Mary Ellen and Della emigrated to NY. I believe Sarah Agnes may have died young. I have already made a connection with the Thomas Jr. side of the family but have no information regarding the McEvaddy side. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Co. Mayo members,

Looking for family surname of CARLON, in particular Michael CARLON's family in or somewhere around Kiltimaugh or Knock.
The family might have left during famine times of shortly thereafter for the UK, Newcastle-under-Lyme in the mid-1800s (1850-1880s??).

My GM was born to him and his wife in 1901 and at that point it was listed on her Birth Cert the father and mother were from Ireland but no place certain (but family lore says the areas I have noted is where Michael's family left from --- possibly leaving some relatives behind....if any Carlon families are known in Co. Mayo it would be appreciated if someone would inform me !

Thanks so much,

Murph_

Mayo geography question - Ruane

Any Mayo geography experts out there? According to her birth certificate, my great grandmother Margaret Kearns' place of birth in 1872 is [hand]written as "Ruane". The modern top portion of the certificate says it was in the "superintendent registrar's district" of Claremorris and birth registered in the district of Ballyhaunis. Someone in the family told me it was in or near the town of Knock, close to the Marian shrine but I can't find any references to a placename of Ruane.

Thanks!
Joe

Currently researching the descendants of Bernard Kilbane and Margaret Mc Hugh, probably from the Ballycroy area. Bernard is believed to have died in Co. Mayo about 1855. Margaret Mc Hugh Kilbane may have immigrated along with her children, but no proof yet. Their children were: Catherine (born 1819-1821, m. Michael Mc Laughlin/Mc Loughlin), Anthony (born 1821-1823, m. Cecilia "Sibby" Mc Bain/Mc Bane), Margaret (born 1824, m. Patrick Baines/Bains), Dennis (born 1826, m. Bridget Gallagher), John (born 1830, m. Mary Mc Ginty). Most of the children immigrated between 1855-1865 and settled in Wonewoc Twp., Juneau Co., WI and Dellona Twp., Sauk Co., WI areas.

Would love to connect with other researchers in Co. Mayo who may be studying these same surnames. Others include: Grimes, Sheridan, Sweeney, Corrigan, Kerrigan, Conway, Mc Cann.

Many thanks!

Joni Leffler

The Times, Trenton, New Jersey, Wednesday, August 9, 2006

YARDLEY, PA -- John P. (Sean) Coyle, 79, passed on from this world Monday with all his family at his side.

Born in Inver, Co. Mayo, Ireland, Sean immigrated to the Bronx, NY in the late 1950s. In 1974 the family moved to the Delaware Valley region and have resided in Yardley since 1979. He retired from General Motors and was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Mayo Men and the Knights of Columbus. He attended St. John the Evangelist Church where he served as an usher.

Later in life his remarkable strength and perseverance were evident as he faced health challenges. While others might have given up, he never did, and continued to be independent at home until his death. His family and friends marveled at his tenacity.

Son of the late James and Bridget Coyle, he was married for 46 years. He was father to three sons and three daughters. Sean was blessed with nine grandchildren. Sean is also survived by his five as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown, PA.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Church.

Rite of Committal will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.

Patrick Joseph NOONAN b.1906, Search

Searching for further information on my great grandfather PATRICK JOSEPH NOONAN (b. Jan 26, 1906 - d. Oct 1970). I am not sure of his place of birth but do know that his last place of residence was Hartford CT. This was confirmed by the Social Security Death Index.

Patrick married Maureen RUSSELL (b. Dec 23, 1909) , to the best of my knowledge, around 1930. Patrick's parents were James and Julia Noonan from County Mayo. I do not know Julia's maiden name.

I am looking to find out where my great grandfather Patrick Joseph Noonan was born (if it was in County Mayo) and more information on his parents (date of birth, place of birth, and Julia's maiden name). I am hoping that you may be able to help.

Samantha Noonan

Researching: Noonan, Russell, O'Mahoney

McLaughlins Mayo>Western New York>Iowa

I am hoping to connect with others having Mayo McLaughlin roots. I recently learned that my Moygawnagh (sp) McLaughlins were from Crossmolina/Crossmalina. Hugh McLaughlin was married to Mary Unknown. Their children included William, John, Ann/Anna/Alice, Bridget and perhaps Catherine, Patrick and others.

William's first wife was Honor/a Gavin/Garvin, whom he married in 1848, the same year they emigrated to the U.S. They spent the first few years in Chatauqua Co., NY, finally settling in Allamakee Co., Iowa, where Honor died in 1864. Their children included Mary (m. Wholahan), Agnes/Bridget(m. McGuire), Patrick and Hugh. Hugh died in 1866. Mary, Agnes and Patrick may have lived in Minneapolis when their father died in 1883. William had remarried Margaret Danaher and had seven more children, all in Allamakee Co., Iowa, near Dorchester and Waukon.

John married a Catherine, perhaps from Carrowkeel, Co. Mayo, Ire. John, his wife, and five children drowned on April 1, 1866, in Allamakee Co., Iowa.

Ann/Anna/Alice married a Dunlevy and lived for some time in Allamakee Co., Iowa.

Bridget married a McKenna (also saw it as McAnaw)

Sarah (may/not be a sister) married a Regan.

A cousin of William's and John's (thus nephew to Hugh)was Patrick McLaughlin, who married a Catherin O'Dea, of Kilrush, Co. Clare (m. 1858). The Catherine, wife of John McLaughlin, of Carrowkeel, Co. Mayo, mentioned above, may instead have been Patrick's mother. Either way, that Catherine McLaughlin is buried in Dorchester Catholic Cemetery in Allamakee Co., IA. In 1895/6 Patrick wrote letters to Mrs. Bridget Morrison in Bath, Steuben Co., NY, whom he addresses as his sister. He refers to another sister, Catherine, who married a John Groby; and to a brother John (wife nee Morrison) and family who live in Oelwein, Fayette Co., Iowa. In a letter dated Jan 1896, Patrick's daughter mentions a cousin May Miles, daughter of William Miles.

Hoping to make connections here.

Kathy

Researching NASH family on the Mullet. English/Protestant "colonists" who rented land from Sir Arthur Shaen in the Barony of Erris. First located in Bangor, Erris, later moved to a home near LEAM(e) Lough on the Mullet. One branch married into the Bingham family -- Elizabeth. Her brother Anthony became Catholic, was disinherited, died in 1843, at which time his home/ land near LEAM was given to his other sister, Isabella Nash Short. Anthony's widow & family moved to a small farm on the property of Bingham Castle/ Estate. Eventually, all but 1 child (Edward) and the mother emigrated to USA in 1861. Any and all info is greatly appreciated!

Hegarty Crossmolina Co. Mayo

A friend is working on her Crossmolina families and is looking for the Hegartys in Crossmolina who would be connected through marriage and the Hegartys in the US who would be cousins. Her great uncle, Patrick Moylett (b. 1878)Crossmolina, Co. Mayo wrote a letter on Feb 23, 1959 laying out the family genealogy. We believe/know that Patrick's sister was Maria or Mary Moylett Hegarty and that she was the mother of a John Hegarty who went to the US in the 1930's and became very successful in the grocery business in White Plains New York in the 1950's and 60's. John Hegarty's first wife died young. He remarried twice. The third wife was named Ruby and was from Ireland. They had homes in Florida and Ireland. This John Hegarty had two brothers. His older brother whose first name is unknown to us left Ireland but died on the trip crossing the Atlantic. John's younger brother was known as "Brodie". He lived in New York, married and had several children. The Hegartys also had cousins named O'Boyle and Doyle who lived in New Your State.

Since this Hegarty family shares the history of their mother's Moylett family here is some of what Patrick Moylett said in his letter written in 1959.

Thomas Moylett died in 1868 at age 88. Thomas was married to Mary Naughton who died 1878 at age 83.
Thomas and Mary Naughton Moylett were the parents of
John Moylett was born in 1830 in Crossmolina.
John married Ellen O'Boyle who also was born in 1830 in Crossmolina.
Ellen's parents were Solomon O'Boyle who died in 1888 at age 88 and
Mary Judge who died in 1911 at age 101.

We also know that John and Ellen Moylett were the parents of
Michael b. Jan 15, 1881 (visited John Hegarty in NY per Ancestry.com's ships' records)
Thomas Patrick b. 1872 who emigrated from Crossmolina to New York
Patrick b 1878 the writer of the letter, a grocer and an IRB member
Maria/Mary who married a Hegarty.

Patrick Moylett provided more history on the O'Boyles, the Judges, the Moyletts, the Naughtons and the Lynskeys, but it is too much to summarize here.

My friend, a descendant of Thomas Patrick Moylett b 1872, would like to make connections and share information with anyone researching this Hegarty family or the other names mentioned above. Just reply to this query to make contact.

Mary
I am trying to find information about a Michael Joseph Garvey who disappeared from England in around 1925, I understand that he originated from County Mayo somewhere near Ballina. He is my wife's grandfather.Michael Joseph Garvey married Eleanor mary Huntsman in South Shields County Durham, England in 1921, he was born about 1897, his father's name was Michael Joseph Garvey, occupation farmer.
There has never been any explanation for his disappearance.
My wife's grandmother Eleanor Mary visited Michael Joseph Garvey's extended family near Ballina in 1936 and again in 1939 and there may have been other occasions. The only clue I have is that Eleanor Mary Garvey recieved a letter from a Mrs John Moran dated 7th January 1946, the address of the Moran family was Baralty, Glenamoy,Ballina,Co Mayo.
If anybody has any information about the Moran family at the above address I would be grateful.
Thankyou.

Matilda TIGHE, farmer’s widow, of Rathlacken, Co. Mayo, Ireland died 15 June 1871 and is buried in Rathfran Cemetery, near Killala, Co. Mayo. Her headstone was “erected by her grandson, Atkinson Tighe, Esqr. of Newcastle Australia”.

I would like to make contact with any of Atkinson Tighe’s descendents to see if we have a connection with our TIGHE family who emigrated to Quebec Canada from Killala, Co. Mayo in May 1824.

Family lore indicates that Matilda Tighe was married to Henry Tighe and that Henry was buried at Rathfran, although the cemetery does not have any records of his burial.

If anyone has any info wrt Atkinson Tighe’s connection to Matilda Tighe & Ireland, I would like to hear from you.

Bill Clayton,
Surrey, BC, Canada
billclayton@telus.net
