Hello All,
Could someone look up the full entry for the following household or institution on the 1871 census please?
George Frost
age: 25yrs
born: England
Occ: Private 5th Fusiliers
Place: Harbour Street
Parish: Ayr.
The above info. was a reply that I received on Rootschat but I haven't had a follow up answer with the further details & so I am now wondering if this is 'my' man. The last info. that I have on him prior to this, is that he was in barracks in Colchester, England but there was no regiment entered. So if someone could fill in these missing details for me I would be over the moon as it may help me to locate him in earlier years too.
Thank You & Regards;
Derek

Hi Nicky,
Thanks for that. Someone else sent me this info. too.
Is the commanding officer listed anywhere in the barracks or in a house nearby? The reason that I'm asking is that there were various regiments with 5th Fusiliers in their title, over the years & the usual way of keeping track of their movements is by the CO's name. They might for example be refered to as Grays Fenceables or something like that. Which, in turn becomes shortened, in some cases to e.g. Gray's. So having this info. can be very, very useful.
Thank You Again:
Regards;
Derek

Hi Derek,

I'm a little fuzzy on the hierarchy in the military. I'm guessing a sargeant trumps a lieutenant and a corporal since there's a few lieutenants and corporals listed?

Name: Robert Bradley
Occupation: Sergeant 5th Fusiliers

None of them are actually listed as commanding officer. Also none listed as Grays [Fenceables] or anything close to that. I'm not sure how to search the census record for nearby houses.

Sorry I couldn't help more.
Nicky

Hi Nicky,
Thanks for that. The army officers ranks start from the bottom with a lance corporal, corporal, sergeant, sergeant major,lieutenant, captain, major, general & field marshall. The Commanding Officer of a unit at a barracks would probably be either a lieutenant or a captain unless they were involved in some type of war or battle when he would be higher up the ladder; usually a general. Other houses in the censuses will just be on either the preceding or following pages after those that you've already found. If you haven't got time it doesn't matter. I'm very grateful for what you have already found for me. Thank You!
Regards;
Derek

Hi Derek,

There were at least 2 or 3 lieutenants listed on this particular census record so I'd have to guess there was a captain in one of the other households. I found this record on ancestry.ca, which doesn't seem to allow me to check the previous or next page on the census record. I'll see if maybe I can search by addresses.

I don't know if you are interested, but you can find those records at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/. The only thing is this is a pay-per-view site so could start getting costly trying to find the record you need.

Cheers!
Nicky

Hi Nicky,
Thankyou for trying. I'll have a go on the Scotland website to see what I can find.

This is the exact same list that I have...but it doesn't help me much. My ancestor is on this list (Dillon), but what I want to know is more about the 5th Fusiliers and I can't seem to correctly identify exactly who they were in 1871. Not knowing this makes it difficult to track my ancestor.
If anyone has any info (that's easy to understand) I'd surely appreciate being pointed in the right direction. What I'm finding online are mixed facts and overlapping dates...lots of non-solid facts.

Thank you!
