My gggrandfather John Dickson shows on his death certificate in 1870 location as Menslow House and also there is a record of him asking for poor relief and his location if Meadowhouse. Does anyone know if these places are poorhouses or hospitals or were they street names?

Thank you, Jonn - I found a later application in 1866 which showed his residence as Meadowhouse. Does that mean just John or his entire family would be living there?

Hello Lynn,

It seems that after John, died 1870, Agnes, had several more poor applications.

You will no doubt know that John Dixon/Dickson's, wife Agnes Tyre, was christened, 01/March/1835. Lochwinnoch,Renfrew,Scotland, her parents were John Tyre, and Elizabeth Walker.

On the poor applications Agnes, will come up under Dixon, and Dickson.

She made applications, at age, 35 years, 60 years, and age 62 years.

These poor relief records are reasonable easy to obtain, but sometimes they dont contain lots of information, others can be very useful, i guess its a bit of take your chance, its a long time since i purchased one, and i cannot remember the cost.

I notice that you have a email address on your file here i will send you a web address for a site where you can register at no cost and peruse the contents at your leisure, if thats ok by you, let me know.

Regards,
Jonn.

Jonn, thank you again. I have been going over the poor applications recently at the local and they are very hard to read. At the end where it says how disposed of by inspecter is that word Relieved? I'm not sure. I also got a film of poor records. I just started looking at it the other day but it's all alphabetical and I'm not sure what that is. Is it monies that the general population had to pay into the poor relief? So many questions. Thanks for your help. Lynn

Over a year old, but so glad I found this thread...

I have worked my history back to the John Dixon / Agnes Tyre family. Specifically through their daughter Mary Stewart (Dixon). If anyone is still looking at this thread, I'd be interested in sharing any information.

John and Agnes were my gggrandparents. How do you tie into the line?

John and Agnes were also my great-great-grandparents. The line connects through their daughter Mary, when she married George Stewart.

I believe, from information gained from trawling these forums, that Agnes lived with Mary and George and their family in her final years.

I guess we're cousins! My thread is through their son Willian Nelson Dickson. I believe I've seen the census showing your Mary and George. I have a bit of information on John (his parents and siblings) but not his birthplace though he was born in Ireland. Also have some info on Agnes. If you want to contact me off this forum let me know or if there's something specific I can help with. Do you have anything on John's birth or prior? This is exciting!
