I have run across three connections between one Ross family and Dreghorne: (1).--David Fullerton married Grissell Ross; (2) John Fullerton, Laird of Dreghorne, married Christian Wallace, relict of James Ross of Quhytrigis; (3) John Ross of Dreghorne.

1. From Volume 23 of the publications by the Scottish Record Office, entitled "Indexes" (to sasines dated from 1599 to 1609, in County Ayr), the following four sons of John Fullerton of Dreghorne are listed:

A.--David Fullerton (has sasines dated from 1602 to 1609), the spouse of Grissell Ross. (Records of the Privy Council refer to him as the "brother of the Laird of Dreghorne". In August 1599, these records show that David Fullerton, brother of the Laird of Dreghorne; and Thomas Ross, son of the late John Ross of Hanyng--that they are not to harm Matthew Ross of Hanyng: THIS IS THE ONLY CLUE AS TO WHICH FAMILY HIS SPOUSE--GRISSELL ROSS--MIGHT BELONG.)
---Volume 29 (with sasines dated from 1617 to 1634) of the same series shows Grissell Ross in 1626 as the spouse of David Fullerton, brother of John Fullerton of Dreghorne.
---Volume 31 (with sasines dated from 1635 to 1660) has no entries for David Fullerton and spouse Grissell Ross....We need to ask why they disappear from the records: Remember, that IF they had moved to another country, Scotland considered them to have no more rights in that country than did a dead person. When Andrew, Lord Ochiltree, was about to move to Ireland, he asked the Privy Council to consider granting Ochiltree to another member of the Stewart family, but knowing that once he moved his rights would be only those of a dead person! Too, the heirs of a person convicted of rebellion, as well as that person himself, could be declared "as if dead".

B.--John Fullerton (has sasines dated from 1602 to 1608), spouse of Jean Mure.
---Volume 29 of the same series shows Christian Wallace beginning in 1624, as the relict of John Crawford, and of James Ross of Quhytriggis. (During this time period, "The Register of the Great Seal of Scotland", Vol. 10, covering 1652 - 1659, shows that John Fullerton of Dreghorne and his spouse Christian Wallace, on June 20, 1632 had granted a charter which had the consent of John Ross, lawful son of the deceased Master James Ross of Quhytrigs!)
---Volume 31 of the same series shows John Fullerton of Dreghorne and his spouse Christina Wallace in sasines ranging in dates from 1636 to 1655....One sasine dated Jan. 1, 1649, lists him as a "SON" of John Fullerton of Dreghorne! (The "Register of the Privy Council of Scotland", Volume V, dated 1572 to 1599, shows that the father John Fullerton was alive in May 1595 but was called "the late Laird of Fullerton" in March 1599.)

C.--Robert Fullerton (has sasines dated 1605).
---Volume 29 of the same series shows him as the "SON" of John Fullerton of Dreghorne in 1626.

D.--William Fullerton (has sasines dated 1605).
---Volume 29 of the same series shows him either as a brother of John Fullerton, or, as a son of John Fullerton--with dates of 1626 and 1627.

2. There is little doubt that John Ross of Dreghorne was the son of James Ross of Quhytrigs, and, the grandson of John Ross and his spouse Marion Hamilton of Hanyng--NOT THEIR SON AS SHOWN IN "Family of John Ross and Marion Hamilton: the male heirs", a posting dated 2 Oct. 2002 here on Rootsweb....."The Register of the Great Seal of Scotland", Vol. 10, (1652 - 1659), page 38, dated January 17, 1653 tells us that John Ross of Dreghorne is deceased; that his wife was the eldest daughter of Henry Osburne, alderman of Londonderry, Ireland; that his relict was granted (lands) "comprehending" the said lands of Dreghorne with the manor place, tower, fortalice and mills thereof , all in the parish of Dundonald, Kyle Stewart. QUESTION: Did Henry Osburne move to Ireland after his eldest daughter was married to John Ross of Dreghorne?--or--did John Ross marry her in Londonderry?

3. On the basis of the above, Grissell Ross, spouse of David Fullerton, brother of John Fullerton, Laird of Dreghorne, needs to be added to the family of John Ross and Marion Hamilton, as a daughter.

Additional information is desired.

In the above posting, "B", Volume V of the "Register of the Privy Council of Scotland", reads that the father of John Fullerton was alive in May 1595 but was called the "late Laird of Dreghorne"--NOT-- "Fullerton".--Walter Farwell
