Trying to locate info on my 11th GGrandfather, JOHN CALDWELL, b. June 06, 1603 in Prestwick, Ayreshire, died February 19, 1638/9 in Dublin, Ennis Killan, Co. Fermanagh, Ireland. Married to Mary Swetenham, b. June 1604 in Col. Donegal, Ireland, d. between 1639-1699 in Co. Donegal,Ireland. They had 11 children. The Caldwells eventually emigrated to America; first, Lunenberg Co.,Virginia, then finally to Hawkins Co., Tennessee. Any suggestions on finding documentation? Are the Caldwells part of any particular clan? Any and all help most gratefully appreciated.

William Bowie

My wife's maternal grandparents were William Bowie born 1862 in Dalry and Agnes Thompson Barnes born 1865 in Kilmarnock. They had at least 4 children; Alfred 1891-1917; Flora Richmond (my wife's mother) 1893-1930; William Arthur 1896-1916; and John William about whom nothing more is known.

William Bowie's father was also a William who died before 1881. He was a weaver in a cotton mill. He was married to Ann about whom nothing more is known.

Agnes Barnes' father was John Barnes born 1839 in Riccarton. His wife's name is not known. She seems to have died before 1881. John Barnes' father was Robert Barnes born 1806 in Kilmarnock and was a weaver. He was married to Agnes born 1807 in Riccarton. No other children are known.

Most of the above information came from the 1881 census. I wonder if there is any connection ?

MURDOCH

George M. Murdoch Moore  (View posts) Posted: 21 Dec 2000 12:00PM GMT

Surnames: Murdoch, Moore, MacMillan
I am trying to trace the link between my grandmother, Jeannie Murdoch born 1865 - 66 in Auchinleck to Elizabeth Murdoch (later MacMillan), Father unknown, and William Murdoch the inventor of Bello Mill Ayrshire. I had a birth date of 28 February 1867 but the 1891 census records her as 25 and her wedding certificate to George Moore on 12 April 1887 records her as 21 years old.

I'm still researching this part of my family but am becoming more and more convinced that your Barneses and mine are connected.
My 3xgreat-grandparents were Samuel Barnes and Margaret Sloan.(Samuel's father was John Barnes, mother Elizabeth Candlish.) Their youngest son, Matthew, was born in 1862 in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and on his birth certificate next to that of Margaret Sloan, appeared that of Agnes Gemmell. This lady was the wife of your Robert Barnes, and the grandmother of Agnes Thomson Barnes. There are other Barnes/Gemmell connections in my family tree.
I have e-mailed you with further info.
