Hi,
I have a Janet Murdoch on my tree and I believe she may be the Janet Campbell who married Hugh Murdoch in your note. If so she had children who included Alexander and Mary. Mary is my ancestor born 1847, married Alexander McClelland 1866 and died around 1928 in Glasgow.
Can you confirm or refute my links?
Mike

I noticed you have a Caldwell listed that you were researching. My Family lists a Quinten Caldwel married to Mary O'Hara, one Daughter Annie b.1896? d.Jan 9 1943, Annie married William Robertson (d. Jan 1 1936). They were in the Maybole/Ayr area of Ayshire that I know of. Have you come across any of these names in your research?
Anything you could offer would be appreciated.

I saw your question on the message board and thought I would reply, My grandmother was born Hannah Murdoch to Annie Rowan and William Murdoch of Bello Mill, Lugar, Cumnock. In the 1901 census she is listed as being seven years old, Sometime after 1901 this section of the Murdoch family moved to Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, to work in the newly opened coalfield.
There is a connection with William Murdoch of coal gas inventor, but of as yet not got very far with my search, hope you may be able to help

There are dozens of Murdochs in Ayrshire, all with some sort of mechanical bent (eg wrights, smiths). One family myth connected my Murdoch branch to William Murdoch, inventor of gas lighting (and a lot more), but I have done enough research to know my branch is not directly descended. William Murdoch (who was born in 1754 at Bello Mill, Auchinleck) was the son of John Murdoch (wright) and Anna Bruce. He left Scotland around 1780 and from then on all his descendants were born in England.

My branch are descended from John Murdoch and Margaret Pollock, and ended up as blacksmiths in Crosshouse (parish of Kilmaurs) from around 1810 onwards - they may have come from Sorn. I've been unable to find out who this John Murdoch's parents were - he died before 1855. The names Thomas, John, Hugh and David crop up (but then they weren't exactly uncommon names). Any connection?

Hi Keith,
My own research has moved on, I know now that my Janet was Janet McAlpine, and she married Mungo Murdoch.
I dont think I have links to your Janet and Hugh any longer!
Thanks anyhow.
One learns how to do this as you go along!

Hi elenor,
I have proved a link to William's brother Robert. I dont understand why Robert did not inherit the mill and I have been wondering who did! Sounds like you and/ your tree will provide the answer!
Can we chat off board too?
