Hello,

I believe that my great great grandfather, Hernando Cornelius Gonzales, was born in Martinique in October 1866. He emigrated to New York, USA in 1870, per the records I have been able to locate. Can anyone tell me how to research records in Martinique and if Latin/Spanish names are common of the island. Any information would be appreciated! The photo is of Hernando C. Gonzales, Jr. and I am hoping for some help. :)

Thank you

According to my records, Ernest Gregrorie Augustin came to New York through Ellis Island on January 7, 1911, he would have been 29 years old. My grandfather (Ernest) had to register for the draft in 1918 and stated that he had a wife named Josephine Augustin living in Martinque. Mty father, his son, was never aware of this wife. However, it could be very possible. Ernest eventually married my gradmother, who was St Martin, in new york. My father was the first child born in this union in 1921, followed by two sisters. My grandmother died with my father was 6years old. Ernest was not very forth coming with a lot of family history to his children except for the few facts that I've shared.

Hello Dinke,

I started a family tree based on the civil registry of the city of St-Pierre since 1880.

Except the official civil status documents, the information I have is based on oral history of the family, which may justify deviations from the oral history you have on your side. Therefore, if there's disturbing similarities there will probably some differences.

By cons, but whether Gregory (Ernest for you) could read and write, it is common in this type of research phonetic elements happen to be tracks not to neglect the one hand, given the time when most people could not read or write documents to control the registrars of right was what seemed to be good. On the other hand, it is put in the context of the complexity of the French language where you can write in a multitude of ways a name that is pronounced the same way. For example, the translation could be written Blake: Blec, Bleck, Blecque, Blaique, Bleique, Bliecque, Bleick, Blêque ... not to mention other more specific but still have the same pronunciation.

Also give you other items I have:
1. There is no Blake Martinique while Blec name is widespread.
2. According to my great aunt, Alice was in Paris, but I know not how long or exactly when. I will try to ask him when I go to meet year-end.
3. May 28, 1882, there is no birth of Gregory in the records of St. Peter by Gregory against one finds a born May 25 and June 6, 1882 said. A nearly three days, it could be that it is the same person.
4. Gregory was in Martinique during the eruption of 1902, he worked at the St. James home (house in the cane sugar industry). He lived in Fort-de-France and Martinique probably left after 1902.

I remain at your disposal for any questions.
Do you have an email, or I can send you the acts of civil status

Best regards.

Karine
Karine,
I continue to be confused. Do you know what ernest's father's name was? Do you know when he was suppose to have left Martinique and sailed to the united states? Ernest documented that his mother's last name was blake, not blec. I would think that he would know how to spell his mother's last name. It was also past on to us that Ernest has a sister in Paris? Who might this individual be?

Hello,

Unfortunately, I have given you all the information I had.
Alice spoke one brother.

After discussion with my great aunt, she would have kept some records of his mother, I'll see when I would visit her at the end of the year.
However, it must be remembered that the family history was held in a particular context, that of the eruption of Mount pelé from 1902, according to the writings left no survivor of the town of St-Pierre so a priori erased an entire history of this city.
After the 8th of May 1902, there was nothing left of this town.

However, I will continue my investigations with difficulty because of my living place and past time.

But you, what are your sources? Are oral or written? Ernest did you? What did he say?

Have a nice day.

Alice and Ernest are children Ursul "Blake" or "Blec" and Blec Ignacine their grandmother by deduction because of his age, 87 years old.

Blake and Blec have the same pronunciation in French.

Hello,

Do not be confused.
I must admit that I was surprised to find all your research, you read my answer
I'll just explain the facts as they were told to me by my great aunt (Alice's daughter):

Alice is the younger sister of Ernest.

http://www.stpierre1902.org/database/fiche.php3?id=3500: http://www.stpierre1902.org/index.html

However, at this time, families are poor, it was given to a lady or friend of his mother who lived in Guadeloupe.
She has lived in Guadeloupe very small at the age of 5 years.
It is probably at this point has been reached about the marital status and name. You should know that this time the people know not read or write it is likely that the officer wrote Alice ERNEST-AUGUSTIN. We arrived at the conclusion that the name Ernest was added to the original name for Ernest was responsible for her sister and it is probable that the officer has made the name of its sole right. Also know, and this is even more disturbing that there is nowhere else in the world-AUGUSTIN ERNEST family except my direct ancestors.

Here is where we lead our name.

To continue the story of my great aunt, his mother told him that his brother had gone to the United States and that therefore she would not have heard from him. Where reconciliation with your family history.
To know that at this time, candidates for departures do not jostled because of the cost of the crossing.

Finally with regard to my family, Alice had two children out of wedlock, which explains the name of continuity ROGER (my grandfather) and Ginette (my great aunt).

Those are the things that I can give you now. Hoping to have some answers to your questions.
I tried to gather as much information as possible, to question my great-aunt also. However, the latter being sick, I do not know if it will answer all the questions. But I know she has a photo of his mother.
Perhaps Ernest would have some pictures also allowing us to cross-reference to appear and who knows maybe a relationship.

That is, what is the story of Ernest?

Hoping you read, I wish you a nice day.

Karine ERNEST-AUGUSTIN

I've actually found a great online resource for records from Martinique. Take a look at http://www.patrimoines-martinique.org/ to see if they have anything you might be looking for. I made one of my most exciting finds there, so I hope it can do the same for you.

I found my ancestors in records called actes d'individualite, which were issued a little after timeframe your interested in, in 1848 and 1849. While this was exciting I wasn't sure what the records really meant, so I had to do some research. You can take a look at my genealogy blog entry for a summary of what I pieced together: http://iamthediaspora.wordpress.com/2011/07/12/actes-dindivi....

The website has other records that I am less familiar with, so there are more possibilities for you to explore there besides the actes d'individualite. Good luck!

I'm interested to hear what other suggestions people may have for researching Martinique.

Elvyn and his wife Gloria did not have their one child (William A.) until they were in their 30's. In 1941 Elvyn would have been married already and much older than he appears in this photo.

I am working on creating a family tree for my grandchildren and am enjoying the history.

~Vilma

Re: de Chabert

Hi Richard,
You probably don't remember me. I am Shirley de Chabert-Highfield, sister of Rita Schuster. Would you happen to have Nancy Carmichael's address in Nevada and telephone number? Rita, somehow, misplaced it. Some of the de Chabert's from Denmark are arriving on March 26th on St. Croix, and I think they are descendants of Charles Textier and directly linked to her. The Christian de Chabert-Rode's of Germany will be visiting with us for the fourth time in November. They are also direct lineage from Charles Textier. I'm sure Nancy Carmichael would be happy to gather some more information. She mentioned you to me. It is for that reason I address my letter to you. Will write more later. Right now I am in Vermont, and will be here with my husband for a few more weeks after which time I return to St. Croix.

Peter de Chabert-Rastrup and his wife Karen of Denmark, will be coming to St. Croix where he has been invited to give a speech on the de Chabert family. I think his grandfather was a plantation manager on the La Grange Plantation site in Frederiksted.

Best regards,
Shirley (de Chabert-Highfield)

I am researching the family of Constance LeBrun and her husband Francis A. "Frank" Prevost of Baltimore. He was the son of Prof. Amie Prevost and Chief Clerk of the Superior Court in Baltimore. I show her as a daughter of Alphonse LeBrun. I would appreciate corresponding with anyone who has information about this family. I recently uploaded a tree which has what I know.
