Hello,
I found a Jose
Marti, Comandante en el Regimiento de
Valladolid, stationed in Puerto Rico in 1860. This could be Jose
Marti Navarro. The name, year and the fact that he was a
Spanish official are good clues to believe that he is Jose Julian's uncle. This must be the Jose that remained in Puerto Rico after he finished his miltary service. He married and died in P.R.
I found him listed in my great-grandfather's military records. They both served in the same Regiment. If you want to trace Jose Julian back to Spain, you could send for this Jose's military records. You could state that you think this is Jose
Marti Navarro. Send a letter asking to let you know how much will be the charges. They only charge per photocopied page ( really a pittance ).
You may write to : Archivo General Militar de

If this Jose
Marti is
Navarro on his mother's side, then you may send for
Mariano Marti Navarro's records if he was a
Spanish soldier also. If he was not, you will still get the name of his parents and where was his brother born. Military records have a lot of information.
Don't forget to give the information that this Jose
Marti served in P.R. in 1860, etc.
