WORCESTER - Modesto Colon Ruiz, 41, of 109 Constitution Ave., a free-lance poet and former public administrator, died Thursday in the University of Massachusetts Hospital after a long illness.

He leaves three sons, Omar Colon in Puerto Rico, Carlos O. Colon of Springfield and Giovanni Colon of Worcester; his father, Luis Perez of Worcester; three brothers, Santos Torres, Jason Perez and Heriberto A. Ruiz, all of Worcester; two sisters, Betsy Perez of Worcester and Iris Sylva of Hollywood, Fla.; nephews and nieces.

He was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, son of Haydee Ruiz Perez, and lived here since 1970. He also spent several years in Puerto Rico. His mother died Sept. 20.

Mr. Colon Ruiz was a free-lance writer, and had some of his poems published. He was also assistant director of the Civil Defense program in Puerto Rico from 1980 to 1982. He was then regional director of the drug-treatment program in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, for several years.

During the 1970s, he was an amateur boxer.

Funeral services and burial will be private. Calling hours are private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to La Clave, care of WCUW Community Radio, 910 Main St., Worcester 01610. Graham, Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors, 838 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Good day. I am reasearching my Sylva lineage, and came across your post. My great-grand mother, and great-great grandmother were Sylva's living in Inagua Bahamas, during the mid to late 1800's. They were known to frequent Cuba(Nuevitas), during this time. I am trying to find connections, and if possible orgins. Thaking in advance,awaiting your response.
