John MARSHALL, miner from Bristol

A question was forwarded on a mailing list that I receive. I have asked whether I can post the question in a few family history message boards.
A FRIEND of mine wrote from Mexico: "A British miner resting at our San Julian silver-gold project near Guadalupe y Calvo in the Sierra Madre of Chihuahua, was called John Marshall."

John, who came from Bristol, lived from 1852 to 1902.

His workers wrote on his gravestone that they greatly appreciated him.

Any help in identifying this miner would be much appreciated.

Terry

Further to my query reagarding miner John Marshall I have attached pictures of his headstone and grave location. From the FreeBMD site it shows that a John Marshall was born in Bedminster (registration district of south Bristol) during the first quarter of 1850. This search has now created quite a bit of interest in the Mexico mining fraternity and I have also attached a transcription on the headstone below.

The mining company where my friend works are drilling on the hill near John Marshall's grave as it contains a number of rich gold and silver veins. The San Julian exploration property and the John Marshall vein discovery are mentioned on the company's website www.fresnillopic.com My friend David Giles works for Penoles and its subsidiary Fresnillo plc.

"Sacred
To The Memory of
John Augustus Marshall
Borm in Bristol, England
March 12, 1850
Died in San Julian, Mexico
September 18, 1902
They Rest from their
Labours And Their
Works Do Follow Them

"Como Un
Testimonio
DE Carino
Este
Recuerdo
Los Empleados De El"

The Spanish part can be translated as follows:

"As a testimony of Affection We, His Employess
Consecrate This Memory"

This Spanish bit suggests that maybe he was a fairly significant member of the mining team.

Best Wishes

Terry
I have a couple of pictures of the grave but awaiting permission to post.

I will pass on any information that is found on him

Charles Verner Vaughan Born 1876 in Kansas

Looking for information on my gggrandfather Charles Verner Vaughan, born July 3, 1876 in Garnette, Kansas. After his father, Nathaniel J. Vaughan born 1843 in Indiana, died when Charles was 5, he and his mother Nancy, born 1840 in Illinois, moved to Philadelphia where they lived until his mother died sometime around 1895. Charles then went to Central America as a missionary. Specifically he was in Nicaragua from 1896 – 1899 and then Costa Rica from 1904 – 1909. It is in Costa Rica he meet and married Regina Brown Benson, a widow with 2 daughters. Together, Charles and Regina had a daughter Jeannette and a son Charles Jr. He then lived in Panama from 1909 – 1918 and then in Columbia from 1922 through at least 1924. His wife and two children died in the 1930’s. It is believed he remarried.

In 1918 he was a navigation instructor for the Seamans Institute in New York and in 1924 he was a Master Mariner for Choco Pacifico Mining Co. (Pacific Metals Co.). He was also an Ensign in the Navy at some point and then a reservist.

Charles’s mother Nancy had two sisters, Sarah Talbot of Oklahoma and Mary Downer of Colorado. Sarah had two daughters, Mary and Nellie and two sons Samuel and a son Edwin B. Talbot who wrote a letter on Charles behalf, which is where I got much of the above information.

I would appreciate any info that could fill some of the blanks.
Our forefathers come from the family in Naples. We left Naples to come to New York City around the beginning of the nineteenth century (1804).

I am interested in learning more about the entire roots and history of the Caraccioli Family history. It would be greatly appreciated that anyone with the least little bit of knowledge or information on the subject please contact me by email at Caraccioli@aol.com.
Plane Crash, Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Horace CAREY, a Pharmacist, flew to Honduras in 1935 with a group from Oneida Co., New York, USA, to do Yellow Fever research in Honduras. The plane crased upon landing in Tegucigalpa. He survived the crash but it is said that he had severer head trauma and possibly amnesia. His wife, Lucy flew there to be with him and then both disappeared, abandoning 3 young children. Is it possible to learn more of this couple; to locate newspaper accounts of this accident; the names of passengers on the plane? It was learned that Lucy returned to the United States at some point before 1968 as she died that year in Texas.
Can anyone help to piece this information together?

I have managed to find the family ancestors back to the year 1737, when by royal grant, a laud (land grant) from the King of Spain was granted to Andres del Valle who was married to Ana Mancilla. The grant was known as Santa Rosa del Pilon, Sitio de San Jose de Arrancabarbas, Departamento de Leon, Nicaragua. I am trying to make the connection back to Spain. I have looked in the Catalog of Passsengers to Indies XVI, XVII and XVIII and got no results. Andres del Valle, appears to have been born to Francisco Del Valle and Ana Lopez, c 1662 in Sanguesa, Navarra, Spain. Can anyone advise me what my next step should be. And if you have any information please send to the e-mail address. Thanks!
Cayetano Cardenas - Jalisco, MX

Hello. I am the daughter of Margarita Cardenas and we are searching for any information pertaining to Margarita Cardenas' father (Cayetano Cardenas)'s side of the family. Here is the information we have (It is not much but we are just getting started)...

Cayetano Cardenas died in 1958, just a few months after my mother - Margarita Cardenas - was born. One person told us that he was 40 years old while another person told us that he was around 50 years old at the time of his death; so we believe that he was born around 1908-1918. Margarita Cardenas' birth certificate from TIZAPAN EL ALTO, JALISCO shows that Cayetano Cardenas' father was PRIMITIVO CARDENAS and his mother was RAFAELA RIVAS. We were told that Cayetano Cardenas was an only child.

We also found that Cayetano Cardenas had 2 sons and 2 daughters besides my Mother, their names are Cayetano, Ruben (or Reuben), Amelia (or Emelia), and the other daughter's name is unknown at the moment. The 4 people I just mentioned above are half-brothers and half-sisters of my Mother that she has never met.

Please help us find our lost relatives, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My GGG Uncle James Stanislaus BELL arrived on the Mosquito Coast in the 1840s, and left again in about 1857 - I have a great deal of information on him and his descendants. It is said that he was accompanied by his brother George BELL (b.1804), who was married to Fanny DADE and had five children. Another report has George BELL dying in "Acozapa, Central America" in 1841 (I'm pretty sure this date is too early).
Where is Acozapa? Any ideas how I might track down what happened to George & his family? I HAVE traced his eldest and youngest sons, but . . .

Rizzatti Name found in Miramar

This town is just over 100 years old and has a defunct gold mine. It has people with rare names and faces of the Conquistadores. Its name is Miramar, Costa Rica and it is close to Monteverde in the mountains overlooking Puntarenas Port and City, and is a lovely place. A lot more Americans should retire there to know the peace of the place. Found a family with the name of Rizzatti. Does anyone have a clue to the origins of this name?
