Those are all the Greek last names that I have documented in my family tree. Variations of Pantazopoulos include Pantages, Pantazis, Pandazes, and other like spellings. Also, I am unsure of the Georgoulos name. The only documented part of that name is the Georgoul part. Please contact me if you have one of those last names on your tree and we can see if we are distantly related. All of them are surnames of my direct ancestors. Theo

Theo, My greek ancestor is Mike Chirigotis, immigrated to US in 1910 from Calvinia(sp?), Papsiluitnika(sp?), Greece. Every time I run a soundex search for him the search results always list a bunch of "Christofilos". I wonder if the two names sound alike and if there's a connection.

Not sure about a Christofilos-Chirigotis connection...
Is that the way the name was spelled in Greece or did it change to that when he immigrated to the US?

Dear Theo, I remember a man, years ago, in New Orleans, His name was Spiro Babalis or Babilis. He was a close friend of my grandfather, William G. Helis and my father, Wiliam G. Helis,Jr. I don't know if this helps or not. Good luck. Cassandra

Was Chirigotis spelled that way in Greece as well? (Well, with Greek character equivalents...) Here's a website with information on pretty much all Greek villages. Maybe you can find that village you named on there. I couldn't find it under the spelling you gave, but maybe a few alternate spellings will do it. http://www.gtp.gr/map.asp

Do you by any chance know from which village/region Spiro came? I can't find him in the Ellis Island records. When would he have immigrated? My dad never mentioned any of his uncles on the Babilis side ever immigrating to the U.S., but I'm finding Babilis from near his village on Ellisisland.org, which leads me to believe that some probably did immigrate without his knowing. Maybe not uncles, but cousins.

I recently found out from my grandmother that the surname Marreas may have been Mavreas. It might have been a typo on my great-grandmother's California death record. Makes sense, since I couldn't find anyone with the last name Marreas in the Greek phone book.

Theo, My mother's family immigrated from Greece around 1912. They originally went by Pantazopoulos, but changed it to Pantages after immigrating. George Peter Pantazopoulos was my great-grandfather that supposedly came through Ellis Island. Let me know if this ties into what you are looking for and I can give you more info.

My husbands family came from Greece. Currently they go by Pantages. I've traced them to Pantazis. Louis G Pantazis was my husbands grandfather. .He came from Mylitsa Greece. Born in 1898. It looks like he had a brother Gus and Peter. If this links to you somehow, please let me know. We do not know much about his greek heritage and I am trying to track it down. Thanks, Angie
