It is not easy to get a death certificate if you do not know the DoD and where she lived (Athens Municipality area or elsewhere). Anyway, here is the correct spelling of the names. Irene/Eirini Kalogeropoulou/Ειρήνη Καλογεροπούλου, Anastasios Kalogeropoulos/Αναστάσιος Καλογερόπουλος. Steffens must be Stefanos.

Re: Otto Ives

I stumbled across this forum topic. Looks like you've posted your question nearly 9 years ago.

Otto Ives was born in 1801 to father Edward Otto Ives, born 1754 in Gosport, Hampshire and mother Arabella Rotten, born April 13, 1764 in Duffield, Derbyshire.

Otto Ives' childhood is not well known, but in 1815 he was commissioned as a Cornet in the 7th Light Dragoons. In 1819, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the 32nd Cornwall Regiment until 1824 when he married Magdalene Diamanti on March 26 of that year in Corfu Greece. By this time, he had become a full Colonel.

Addtionally in the year of 1824, Otto Ives' wife Magdalene gave birth to his first son, Edward Otto Ives in Corfu, Greece. His second son, William Henry Ives was born in 1832, in Corfu, Greece.

The following spring of 1833, Col. Otto Ives, his wife with child, her widowed sister and two sons moved to Upper Canada, settling in the woods of Ancaster, Ontario on the property known as The Hermitage. He purchased the property from Reverend George Sheed and his brother Robert Sheed.

Not long at all after having settled in Ancaster, Magdalene gave birth to Otto Ives' third son, Alfred Ives, on April 25, 1833. Alfred was baptized by Reverend John Miller on June 23, 1833, as baby Alfred passed away. Alfred Ives was buried on June 24, 1833 - just 2 months old.

The summer of 1834 arrived a fourth son, Frederick Ives, born June 25. Frederick was baptized August 31, 1834, by Reverend John Miller.

The death of Colonel Otto Ives came just more than one year after Frederick was born. On July 3, 1835, Otto Ives had passed away at the age of 34 and was buried in the Ancaster Churchyard, July 4, 1835, by Reverend John Miller.

Background regarding The Hermitage and its hauntings date back to the family's arrival to Ancaster in 1833. A lady by the name of Mary Rosebeury had hired a coachman, William Black, who had later fallen in love with Mrs. Ives' sister. It is said that Mr. Black asked Otto Ives for her hand in marriage, to which Otto Ives refused. The legend says that William Black had been so upset with the decision, he took his own life, having hanged himself in the barn.

Taking ones own life forbids their grave be buried in the churchyard. William Black's remains are said to have been buried in the woods in a shallow grave with no marker some 2 kilometers from the Sheed-built Hermitage mansion. The grave, which is south of the Hermitage farming field is said to be where Sulphur Springs meet Lover's Lane. In the woods between Lover's Lane and the barn, it has been said that William can be heard sobbing to this day.

Daniel
Hamilton, Ontario

HELP with a family mystery

An ancestor of mine was from Greece, but his father was a Scot.

My 3rd great-grandfather, Peter Watson, was born in Greece in 1843, and came to Brooklyn, NY around 1869. His 1927 death cert. says his father was Peter Watson, born in Scotland, and his mother was Mary "Granger" born in Greece. But the family story is that the name was Gangarous (or sounded close to Gangaroos). The story on that side of the family was that Peter Watson (senior) was the Scot ambassador to Greece and married a woman there, but nobody knows what happened after that. My 3rd great-grandfather was born in Greece but im not sure if he spent his life there until coming to New York.

I have no clue where to begin...

Thanks to anyone who can help

Hi
Nice to hear you are related. Elizabeth was my great x3 grandmother and with the help of people in Australia and NZ we have been following her for quite awhile. As I mentioned she married a few times. I am interested that you say Sottero was buried with her as we thought that Robert Nelson was orignally Sottero and he died in 1936. So would love to hear more also what do you know of her husband Nicholas as we know very little about him. I am happy to swap any information with you. She has been a fascinating woman! I look forward to your reply.

Michelle

According to a recently located naturalization paper, my great grandfather George Baltas was from Muzakeon, Greece. Unfortunately, the couple times he has written this on the form were badly fingerprinted, so I do not think I have the correct spelling - internet searches turn up no such place. Supposedly it was somewhere near Athens.

If anyone is aware of a location that might be correct, I would sure appreciate the help...

Hi

I belong to the ROUSSOS family from Isari, Greece. You mention the name means - the Russian. Did your family originate from Russia? My father left behind a Russian Hero Pin and we cannot figure out how it was in his possession. No one in the family can explain it. We know it wasn't his but I feel it belonged to either his father or grandfather.

Hope you can elaborate.
Thanks

Amalias/Amaliada is not such a small village! Pop about 18,000. It is however a relatively new town as the municipality was established in 1885. Most of the people who came to live in Amaliada originated from mountain villages of Arcadia and Achaia. You can contact the Municipality for birth certificates but first you must find the original Greek name ( certainly not Carlton!). It seems that Savas is your ggrandfather's first name and not the surname. http://www.amaliada.gr/Default.aspx?tabid=299&language=e...

I have been told that my grandfather was a stowaway from Greece who changed his name on arrival. Because he died 3 months before my mother was born I have limited information. His name was NICHOLAS SAVA CARLTON. His death certificate gives his date of birth as MAY 2, 1893 with his parents names as SAVA and TACCY (CARTHINY) CARLTON. His WWII draft registeration lists his place of birth as AMALIAS,GREECE. It seems he arrived in the Worcester,Massachusetts area around 1920. I have been told that Amilias is a small village south of Athans so in 1893 it must have been a very, very small villiage. How many boys names Nicholas Sava could there have been born on May 2, 1893???? Please, can anyone help me!

I am trying to find the father of Loius George, Gus and Peter Pantages. They all lived and worked in Akron, Ohio in 1030 per the census. they immigrated from greece prior to that. I understand they are from Kalamata originally, but have been unable to trace their father. Louis was born in 1898 and migrated in 1917. George Pantages of Cleveland, Ohio is Louis's son. I can't trace back past Louis though..
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the advice. The information I am looking for is for several men that served in the first World War and the subsequent war in Turkey. This would be for the 1917-22 period. They were draftees, not carreer soldiers. I understand that one can write to the Army in Greece to request information regarding former soldiers but I have never heard of anyone that has. This information in the FHL is mostly for the XIX century as far as I can tell.

Hi -

I assume you are looking for historical military records. The LDS Family History Library has a collection of microfilms which include some Greek military records. You can reference my website at http://HellenicGenealogyGeek.com where these records are highlighted with appropriate links.

You can order a copy of any of the microfilms listed through a local Family History Center - for locations reference http://www.familysearch.org -- or ask your local library if they can order for you or advise another library in the area that can help you.

I have personally used some of these - have patience - make sure you can identify the name in Greek.

Good luck with your Greek family genealogy research.

Georgia Keilman
http://HellenicGenealogyGeek.com
Check out my website for more resources on Greek genealogy research.

Hello Georgia, Thanks so very much for the reference to this article. It is quite interesting, and I hope to be able to verify that this in fact is the Kalithea that I am searching for. My dear mother in law visited about 5 years ago, and was welcomed by long lost cousins who remembered her grandfather. She passed away in 2008, but her companion who traveled with her to the village is still living and I hope to show him this article to see if he recognizes this village. Thank you again for giving me this link, I appreciate your help.
Carol Harbushka in Arizona
