Hi Kate, my grandmother was Annie Marie Helpert b. 1895 Little Harbour, married to Daniel Ryan. Raised their family (my Dad) in Great Paradise. Her father was Alexander Helpert married to Mary Murphy. My Dad Cletus Ryan had been quite interested in Alex and discovered he came from Sheet Harbour NS. I've been in contact with the NS Helperts and found a substantial amount of relatives with a best guess Alex's father was Richard Helpard (different spelling) whose father was Henry Philip Hilpert and his father was a Hessian soldier from Germany, Valtinus Johann Hilpert (who settled in Halifax area). How are you related to the Helperts?
My Grandmother Annie Ryan (nee Helpert) had a sisters Veronica (m. to Veo Voisey) and Fanny (no record of her being married) and a brother Alexander (1st wife Catherine Hepditch, 2nd wife Hannah Ryan, no children).
If you wish you can email me at egryan@nl.rogers.com

hi there

I came across this post today - I realize you might not even be on this website anymore, but I figured I would give it a shot. I'm looking for any information related to Helperts from Placentia Bay, specifically Little Harbour. The name is so uncommon that I am having trouble finding any information. Was Helpert your mother's maiden name? I can only find two families in the area with this last name, neither of which list an Annie in the 1921, 35, or 45 census reports. There are a number of male children listed, however.

Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Kate Baker

My name is Lauren Howard and I am the great grandaughter of David Griffiths 1882 and Jane Sparrow 1888, From Ship Harbour and Placentia

I've done a fair bit of researching but I've hit a brick wall on the Griffiths side and can't seen to go any further than Patrick Griffiths 1820 or Davvyd/David Griffiths 1795. One of these we believed immigrated from Wales/England or Ireland due to upsetting the royal family of England or so the legend goes, it was reported he was also a famous painter in the UK? Any history or knowledge would be fantastic. (Surnames so far on this side of the tree are; Fitzpatrick, Whelan, Whiffen)

On the sparrow side I know a little about Jane Sparrow and her family. As well a tragic accident in St John's which resulted in her Grandmother's death outside John the Baptist. (Surnames so far on this side of the tree are; Walsh and Martin)

Both sets of family seem to be from Ship Harbour, Bachens and Placentia.

Looking forward to finding any relatives or stories.

All the best,
Lauren Howard

My great grandfather, Martin Smith, moved from Chance Cove to Dildo when he was a young orphaned boy. I expect this was in the early to mid 1800's. That is where my family tree stalled. Recall my late father (Selby Smith) mentioning relatives in Hopeal as well??? Would appreciate any further leads from Chance Cove.

Hi Eric,
I have done a lot of research on our family tree and it doesn't make sense for Robert Senior to be our Great Grandfather. He may be our Great Great Grandfather. This Robert Senior you are refering to his will was probated in 1881 which means he would have to be dead before the will was probated because in order for a will to be read the person would have to have died already. Our Grandfather James Barrett wasn't born until 1887 so Robert Senior can't be our Great Grandfather because he was dead before Grandfather was born.I think our Great Grandfather was James Barrett Senior who's father would possibly be Robert Senior because he has son in will called James Barrett who could possibly be our Grandfather's James Barrett's Father. It was very common back then for families to name their kids after their parents. Inez seems to think also that James Barrett Senior was our Great Grandfather as well,She said she can remember her dad talking about him.She said he drowned at age 78 years. He is in Woody Island burial listShe said people seem to think it was Robin or Robert ,but she said she thinks Robin was George Barrett's son. This is just waht we think we could possibly be wrong. Thanks for the reply and let me know if you have something otherwise.Have a great day Eric.

Doug Sr. is the son of Patrick Flynn of Petit Forte + Mary Pearson.

I've been able to find information on Mary Kerrivan's family but information on the Flynn or Pearson side seems to be a lot more rare.

I would appreciate any help at all any one can offer.

Sincerely

Kay

PS.
Peter was actually a mistake. It should have been Edward Bennett.

Searly claims the Bennett's of Isle Valen were originally French Benoit's and alglosized their names. I've been looking for evidence of that but so far have not come up with anything.

The FB Isle Valen group I am part of. There is a fair bit of info in there too and lots of pictures.

I too have a Peter Bennett but he was married to a Martha Wadman. I cannot get any further on the Isle of Valen link. There is a facebook page of Isle Valen but that mainly has members who left the island when many of the outports were shutdown. Most likely, your Bennett was originally French for Benoit. Good Luck.

Hi Shawn....Your Southeast O'Keefes are related to me.....but I am curious ab out your Greenes. All,absolutely all, of the Greenes in Point Verde,Placentia, etc. are the same large family.....providing their ancestors have been here before,say,1940s.
In the 1960s and resettlement from the Bay,some Greenes presumably came in from Red Island,Isle aux Valen,etc.....and I have no idea if these Greenes(and Greens) aree related to me. My GF was born at Isle aux Valen, but he was Judge, not Greene.
Do you know if your Greenes are connected to Poin t Verde from way back, or from the other side of P.B. ? Or both?
The only Harbour Islands I could find on Google are well away from P.B.....so which Harbour Island do you mean?
Thanks,
Ward
I have been able to trace my ancestry back to the mid 1800's but can not seem to go any farther.

I understand that the church records of St. Kyran's is what I need but they don't appear to be online. I have been through the PANL records online, NLGB web site ect. From what I can gather, the church records for St. Kyran's were partially destroyed back in the 1940's due to a fire. Does anybody know what remains of these records and where they are?

On the Bennett side of my family I have a Peter and Johanna Bennett. Their eldest son Michael was born in the mid 1880's. They also have a son Thomas, Simon and daughter Cicely.

I do not know where to turn for further information. Johanna's maiden name, birth dates, ect.

On the other side, There is William and Elizabeth Green of Davis cove. I did find Elizabeth's maiden name from a marriage record from 1899. She was a Hapgood. My father thought she was from Tack's Beach. The marriage record states she is from Isle Valen. How to find out where they descended from would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for any information on the family of James and Mary Ann Giles, especially when/where they were married, what Mary Ann's maiden name was, and who their parents were. James and Mary Ann are thought to have been married either in England (possibly Dorset or Kent counties) or somewhere else in Newfoundland. Known children were Harriet b 1835; James C, b 1838; Mary Millie, b 1844; Sophia, b 1850; all born in Sound Island and baptised in Burin Methodist church. Harriet married John Rodway; Mary Millie married Thomas Beck; Sophia married William Eddy.

There were possibly three other children:
- Thomas Giles m. Elizabeth and had 8 children: Amander, Tryphena, Susannah, John Joseph, Amelia Jane, Tryphena Eliza, and two others whose names are not known. John Joseph married Harriet Ann Rodway in 1886 and had 6 children: Thomas, John Wilfred, Eli, Emily, James, and Eliza Lilian.

-Eliza Ann Giles who married Henry Beck in 1864; and

- Joseph Henry Giles who married Charlotte Brinston in 1865

I'd be grateful for any help on this family, and I'll gladly share what I do have about them.

I have been trying to research my grandmother's family from Newfoundland. They were Paige family of St. John's. Frederick Francis Paige and MaryAnn Wellman were her parents.
There were four daughters, Muriel Paige, Templeman, Dorothy Paige, Winifred Paige Lawrence and my grandmother, Irene Paige Parsons and a brother Allan. I am stuck when I try to find out anymore. My grandmother was only one of the girls to have children, Gerald, Gordon and Frank Parsons, and Dorothy Parsons Tankard. Allan had one son Ken Paige, who mainly lived with my Aunt Win when he was growing up. Any information regarding Paige or Page, please contact me. They were also members of the Anglican church.

Matthew was born 1811 and died 1881 in St. John's. Icannot find the birth of either Andrew or his father Matthew in St. John's and have started looking outside St. John's. I know there were mcgraths on Patrick Cove, Colliers, Holyrood and the French Shore on the Northern Pen....
Hi Joanna,
Sadly, I have almost nothing on the Millers. Indian ancestry was mostly kept hidden or denied in previous generations.
Please do contact me privately...wardgreene@hotmail.com....and perhaps we can start some connections somewhere.
By the way, almost everyone in Patrick's Cove is related to me in some way. And,re Indian....my GGF Patrick Judge(married to the Indian lady Mary Ellen Miller)....his brother married Anne McGrath of Gull Cove (SMB) and their family all later moved to Patrick's Cove. However, neither my GGF's brother nor Anne were Indian. Ward.

I'm interested in some of your family names also. My father was a Barron from Dunville (Herbert, born in 1905). My mother was an O'Reilly from Argentia (Monica, born in 1905). My maternal great-grandmother was Mary Power from Argentia who married John O'Reilly. I don't have much to help you, but I'm interested!
