Well, I've gotten about as far as I can go for now. I'm going back to Michigan in August and will try to get to the State of Michigan Library so I can access some more of the NY documents I can't get online. The next time I get to Kingston I'll try to see what I can get there. Until then, this will have to suffice.

Well, hi ,,,I thought you ran off with the milk man,, or something ! Yes it is hard to get fresh info. I'm in a small
town where the library doesn't have a genealogy dept. SO -
it is search and research,, old "stuff"..
I do know that there was a Cornelius Mastin (a rough bunch) who pioneered Michigan -- Penn Yan , I think.. He later turned out to be "the judge"
Guess there were not many takers , ha ha

I spent the last week, going over wills and whatever else I could download when I was in Michigan and had access to the full version of Ancestry.com. But still no answers.

Well some puzzle pieces like an Elizabeth Masten married to a Barent Viele and a Barent Masten in NY at the Caughnawaga Reformed Church. He was married to Hester McGraw. But there is little overlap between families so it seems like a deadend. Also found out that the Mastens in Pennsylvania are not related. There was a Peter Masten that immigrated in the 1800s from Ireland, moved to NY for a while and then to PA.

Then I got reading Ron Brown's book Deception Point. Great book and fun to read as a scientist.

So I guess, I'll just put things on hold a bit until I can get back to Michigan. I never expected the State of Michigan library to have so much of NY history - but they do. So now I can't wait to go back.

Cornelius Masten b. 1824 Canada d. 12/23/1902 Hallowell, PEC. Married #1 Elizabeth Unknown b. 1827 m. #2 Hannah Lowry on 10/25/1878, daughter of Wm Lowry and Mary Harley.

Parents of Cornelius: Peter Masten b. abt 1779 NY. Married Hannah Nelson. She died bef 1851. [see Hallowell Census 1851, Cornelius and Peter living one house apart]

Parents of Peter: Here's the big question. Aaron b.1740 NY and Rebecca Viele/Feeley Mastin [my line]

Well believe it or not... a year has gone by. Sorry I have not made any progress (too many things to deal with on the home and work fronts). To all who sent me things, thanks so much. I do have some things that I need to update, including the genealogy. I have pictures to add (thanks to various people) and hopefully, I'll get to that this summer. I am also going to try to find the latest edition of Beekman Patent when I am in Michigan next week.

So still remaining is who is Peter Minard Masten....Stands to reason that there is some connection to the Viele family (father Myndert Viele) but ....

Also doesn't seem possible that it was almost a year ago I met John Masten and his wife Bernice, who died in August 2006. We lost a great genealogist when Bernice past away, and John lost a loving wife.

I have Beekman Patent vol 8 in front of me....

I'll write more later but things are as confusing as we thought.

Aart Masten married Pieternelle Velie on Sept 9, 1704. He moved to Dutchess County in 1714 and was a slave owner.

There is another Aart (Cornelius4, Aart3, Cornelius2, John1) born 7 October 1740 in Poughkeepsie who married Rebecca Velie (daughter of Myndert and Rebecca Velie). They had a son Meindert born 10 Oct 1769, married Nancy Morgan 1793. Not found in NY in 1800. Thought to have a daughter Nancy (b. 1973, married Cyrus of Hallowell, Ontario
son Jonathan (b. 1805) married Mary Leavens from Beekman, settled in Hallowell, Ontario
Minard (married 1836 in Hallowell, ON)
Aart and Rebecca also had a daughter Rebecca who married Ichabod Bowerman Jr.

More later when I get some time....as there is more in the section on Mastens about the Loyalist clan. So there are are two Masten-Velie marriages.

I received some new information about Catherine Mastin MacDonald from a relative who recently was in Prince Edward Co., Ontario. He met a living MacDonald relative who give him the following that Catherine had written in 1879. She stated that she was 84 yrs old and Daniel (Husband) had been gone for 25 yrs. Daniel was 62 yrs and died May 31, 1854. The new information is:

"Daniel and his nine brothers and two sisters were born in New Brunswick (I knew this). Following the War of 1812, they along with their children all emigrated to Prince Edward Co. and settled in Hallowell and some in Hillier. They came up the St. Lawrence River by bateau boat to Picton Harbour. There the Indians directed them over to the Sand Ridge. They brought only a team of oxen and a few household items.They built a stockade of cedar posts and thatched it." This was compiled and written by Eleanor Lindsay MacDonald for "Amazing Loyalist Adventure in 2003" and presented at Bloomfield Town Hall on Settlement at West Point from 1818 to presnt Day. There were about six pages of which I list above.

I now need to find a Catherine Mastin who married Daniel MacDonald in New Brunswick, probably in Wickham parish, in the Grand Lake area, or Gagetown where Daniel and brothers were baptized in the Anglican Church. Do you know of a Mastin family who came to Queens Co., New Brunswick in the late 1700's?

I just got into this and have had lots of fun. Some stuff has been missed with the census of 1851 where a couple of the famlies are called Martin and with some other information such as Nancy that marries Cyrus Richmond. Nancy Mastin was the widow on Mynerdt who died in 1801 during a log cabin build.

Anyways this is what I have pieced together. Hoping Susan might have found some more details to share and fill in the pieces.

I really believe 4 brothers came up together along with some sisters in Rebecca and Eleanor. From the Bowerman records you get


There were several brothers of this family to come from Dutchess Co. but the names and relationship are not known to the writer. One brother, whose wife’s name was Rebecca, settled on the West Lake shore. He died in 1826, and was buried on “Bowerman’s Hill”. He was rather familiarly called “old-man” Mastin, and although buried in the Friend’s burial ground the funeral service was Methodist, and was held at the residence. This works with the 1808 census for Hallowell since Minard has died.

So my information kind of looks like this and hoping others verify my logic or fill in the pieces that I have missed. I have researched 1851 and 1881 census, marriage records for Ontario, this thread, Bowerman records and some other stuff to come up with this list

Jan Masten and Marytjen Van Keuren. They had from there will that was put up 6 boys and 3 girls and lived in New York

From this family it looks like alot of the Mastin's come to PEC. Sarah daughter of Johnannes and Madleen marries Evert Terwilliger.

Aaron had Rebecca who marries Ichabod Bowerman and have 6 children and a big line from there. Eleanor marries Issac Weeks and has 9 children and a big line in PEC also. Also have a son Myndert who married Nancy Morgan and 7 children end up in PEC with the following kids Johnathon G who married Mary Leavens, Betsy marries Benjamin Maybee, Harriet marries John Hicks, Peter Minard marries Anna Bowerman Mary Polly marries Joshua Hicks, and Minard who married Helen Van Vleck. Supp sedly Aaron and Rebecca also have Barued(Bernard) but the dates do not fit. A Catherine also in the mix for Aaron
