My husband's father was Manuel Carreon (wife, Sofia). His father was Tomas Carreon (supposedly disappeared with Pancho Villa, perhaps by force), and his father was Roman Carreon (?lost through Indians?). I think they were all from Chihuahua.

I have heard that this name may originate in France, with a spelling of Carrion. Do you know of this?

Martie,
I'm not familiar with the names you have listed, so I'll list the info I have maybe some of it will sound familiar to you. My Grandmother was Aurora Carreon, she was born 1911 in Columbus , New Mexico . She was the oldest of seven children; her brothers were Roberto, Francisco, and Raymundo. Her sisters were Petra, Josefina, and Mercedes. Her parents were Alejandro Carreon b.abt.1880 and Francisca Valenzuela b.abt.1880 . Alejandro and Francisca Carreon owned a ranch in Northern Chihuahua , near Parral and they also lived at times in and around Columbus and Deming, New Mexico. Alejandro was one of the youngest of 14 children that his father Juan Carreon had. I only know a few of the names of his siblings and they are: Jose, the oldest from Juan's first marraige,All the remainder of the 13 children are from Juan's 3rd marraige. The ones I know are a brother, Jesus and a sister, Maximiliana. I can find out more names next time I talk to my mother. Juan Carreon was born about 1850 or possibly earlier in Santa Rita, New Mexico . He was married 3 times , Don't know the names of his first 2 wifes but this 3rd wife's name was Andrea Ortiz b. abt. 1850 in Chihuahua, Mexico. Juan's mother's first name was Micaela , don't know here maiden name. My Grandmother always claimed that the Carreon were French and her side of the family looked it. They were very tall, with fair complexions. My greatgrandfather Alejandro Carreon was 6' 7" and my mother's brother is 6' 5" . A lot of us are 6 foot +
My grandmother also said that the family name was once spelled Carrion. I have found on records that Carreon and Carrion were used interchangeably. There use to be huge family reunions in New Mexico that my grandparents would go to , 300 people or more would attend. Sadly my family has lost touch with most of our relatives in New Mexico since my Grandparents passed away.I hope some of this rings a bell .

Victor,
I don't recognize any names. The info I have from my husband's family only goes back to my husband's grt-grandfather, Roman Carreon. I got this info from my father-in-law before he died. We may go to Chih., Chih this winter and I hope to learn more. I have asked my sis-in-law for certificates but says her dad was born north of Chih city. We pass it when we go to Chih from Juarez, to the left.

My husband also heard it was French. His father was light skinned and some of his relatives had light eyes. His paternal grandmother was supposedly tall and light but of the surname Legarreta.

His grt-grandfather was supposedly lost to the Indians. He (Roman Carreon) may have been born about 1870.

There is a musical band from Mexico (maybe Chih) that is called the Carrion Brothers. I have seen that spelling variation in France.

My husband is of fair height, taller than most average Mexicans, but he has reddish skin tones-have heard his mom may have Tarahumara Indian blood along with perhaps French, since I have heard that her surname, Sigala, may be French too (from internet). Her blood is very strong. Two of my children look like her side of the family.

I descend from Hispanic and Scottish and English blood, some of my ancestors having gone to Mexico from New Jersey after colonial times, in the 1800s.

Victor, I will need to save the valuable info you have here as I may later learn that my children and you are related.

thanks,
martie (southern Arizona

Im wondering if you may by chance you know the meaning of the name Carreon. I had a son in 86 out of wedlock and gave him my maiden name. However his biological father is a Carreon and after getting in touch with him recently I have decided that I would love for my son to have his name. My son after looking up the meaning in the dict.under carrion declined the offer.I understood , after all dead rotting flesh is not all that appealing. If there is another meaning please let me know. His dad is a wonderful person and I would be happy for my son to share that name with him. Sincerely, Laura

Laura,
I don't know what, if any, the translation may be. I know that the name appears in France, but it may be spelled with an 'i'. I have seen it spelled with an 'i' in Mexico.

I understand your son's hesitation, especially at his age. I know that Carreon anglocized sounds like carrion. My girls (one born in 86) have had no problems. My son is still young so it is hard to say. Most people pronounce it 'carry-on'.

Have you thought of a hyphenated name, e.g. Motley-Carreon? Then, as an adult, he could drop the Motley.

Most adults I come into contact with ask for the pronounciation and I pronounce it with the mexican pronounciation-rolling the r's and sounding out a short 'e' instead of a short 'i'.

I'm sure his father would be honored and delighted to have his son with his name, as is custom, but as I said, I understand your son's hesitation.

The Carreon family I have trace back in Chihuahua back to 1778. I know that they are Spanish & Portuguese, I know the oldest recorded Carrion is a General back in the 1650 in Hidalgo de Parral. I know that marry into the Sigala family in the Satevo & Guadalupe& Chihuahua, Chihuahua.

Patsy, I am interested in your information. Can you give me all the info you have, especially where Carreon and Sigala marry? In my husband's case the Carreon and Sigala married about 1935-40.

Can I e-mail you?
