Hello there !! I guess we have common interests. The research I have done has turned up very little, the largest population of Dorame's is in Hermosillo Sonora Mexico. My father was Rafael Dorame, son of Antonio Dorame and Celestina Soto. The surname "Dorame" has its roots in Europe, that is why it is difficult to trace in the U.S & Mexico. Best of luck to you !

Hello to all of you researching Dorame. It goes back a long way in Sonora, though the early records are often in poor condition and hard to read. It may be Opata or possibly Yaqui, but I am quite certain that this is not a European name. There were three Dorame soldiers in the Bavispe Opata company in 1818, and Juan Dorame was an Opata cacique, one of the leaders of the revolt of c. 1819. This is in Almada's Diccionario Sonorense. I have seen the name in records from the 1600's I am sure - perhaps in the Magdalena records or those of Arispe. Or both. The Do part of the name may have a meaning of its own because I also see names like Doaqui and Doaner. Just as the Ba in the many place names like Bavispe, Bacoachi, etc., refers to water.

Hello, I can tell that your research is much more extensive than any I have seen or have been able to do. Would you mind saying what led you to do the research on the Dorame name ? Was it history on the state of Sonora ? Or does the name have a connection to you ? Thanks in advance for your reply.

I have not done research specifically on the name Dorame. I began to notice it as I was looking through parish records and other sources trying to trace the surnames in my family. And I saw the messages posted earlier about it. While looking through presidial rosters I noticed the men in the Bavispe company. Once attention has been called to a name, you notice it if you see it again - or at least, that is the way it works for me. There is a Moraga family in Arizona that has a tradition of being of Opata origin and in trying to learn a little about that group, I looked them up in Almada's diccionario. There I saw the reference to Juan Dorame and his role in the Opata revolt. After posting my last message I looked at the earliest frames of the LDS film of parish records from the Magadalena/Cucurpe area and found one of the early references that I told you about: Juan Dorame was a godfather in 1685. All of the surnames at that time were indian and I don't doubt that Dorame is also. If I come across anything more specific about it, I will post the information.

I am the eldest daughter of Benjamin Romero Dorame'. My father is a brother of a seven others in his family. From the oldest to youngest, Mary, Molly, Bob, Benjamin (my father), Ernie, Larry, Michelle, and Sam. There fathers name is Robert Dorame'. He has three brothers named Alex, himself, and Eddie. I know their mothers name was Sostenes Dorame'. I believe she was married to Santiago Dorame'. I know as much as My great grandmother Sostenes lived and died in Globe as well as my grandfather lives there at the present. Our family has recently found out that my greandfather, Robert had a second family as well. I would like to be able to all the information about our entire family. And hopefully understand who I am. We believe we are Apache but some say we are Yache. I just begun becoming interested in my father's side of the family so I would like to begin with his father's family. If anyone thinks they might have some information please send me any emails. They would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Annaliese Dorame'

My grandmother was MARIA (ARBIZU) MORAGA, from Bisbee and Tempe, Arizona and Sonora Mexico. She married FRANCISCO MEDINA in 1900.
I have been trying to find any history as no one seems to know much.
Your mention of another name sparks something. I seem to recall, in my never ending search, seeing this name before.
I would be interested in any information we could share. I don't have much.
Thank you,
Theresa Romero Jones

I'm using my mother's maiden name. Her name is Maria Isela Dorame. She has 2 brothers, 5 sisters. They were born in San Miguelito, Sonora, Mex. San Miguelito is next door to Bavispe and is much smaller than Bavispe. My mother says Bavispe was like New York and San Miguelito was like Needles. Her father's name (my grandfather) was Antonio Dorame. Her mother's name was Maria Rascon. Rascon is another uncommon surname. Antonio died around 1951. Antonio was a farmer & a coal miner. I believe he was born in San Miguelito. Maria died 1988. Maria was from Tarachi Sonora & came w/her father, mother & many brothers & sisters to San Miguelito when she was a teenager. Antonio also had several brothers & sisters. All of my mother's brothers & sisters are still alive as are many Dorame cousins. Most of us live in So. Calif. & in Arizona -- Tucson mostly I believe. My mother's family moved to Mexicali,in search of a better life after her father passed away. Eventually, all came to the U.S. I have more info & would love to share & read more on the Dorame name, history, & family. Small note: around 1970 I remember listening to Spanish radio station in LAA. as a American Indian from Baja California, Mexico, was speaking about his tribe. His last name was Dorame. Unfortunately, I don't remember his first name nor his tribe. I thought this was interesting as many people assume Dorame is French. I have a feeling Dorame may be more Indian in roots than European & maybe that's why info is difficult to acquire.

Your information is very interesting. I agree that the name must have its roots in the tribes of the area rather than having European roots. My mother's father was Antonio Dorame from San Miguelito, Sonora. He had several brothers and sisters. San Miguelito is very close to Bavispe & Bacoachi. My grandfather married Maria Rascon & together they had 7 children. My grandmother moved to San Miguelito w/her parents & siblings when she was a teenager. My grandfather died in 1952. My grandmother & her children then moved to Mexicali, Baja California. All of them reside in So. Calif. now. We have always wondered about the origins of the last name. I would appreciate more info if possible.
