My Grandma Pearl
Hatchett (Farmer) Thomas gave me this information about our family.
After the war with Old Mexico James
Hatchett went to Chihuahua, Mexico and set up his medical practice. He also had a hardware store.
He married a Castillian lady of Chihuahua. His wife was
Spanish. Grandma didn't know her
Spanish name or lineage. Her oldest son,
Santiago Juan (James John)
Hatchett came and lived with his
Uncle William
Pickney Hatchett, M.D. in the
Hatchett settlement which is still on Rt. 3 Stephenville,
Texas or as it was then called Hatchettville, near Seldon, TX.
This is information is about Santiago's
Uncle William
Pickney Hatchett, M.D. who
Santiago Juan (James John)
Hatchett lived with.
William
Pinckney Hatchett was one of the very few really educated Physcians of his time. He was educated in Cinncinnati, Ohio or Philadelphia, PA. one or both. He possibly had his Pre Med education at Mercer University in
Georgia. I am sure you can find a record of his schooling or ancestry in one or all of these places. He was also a Baptist
Minister. William and his brothers James, Henry & John were young men when General Zachary
Taylor lead the U.S. Army in the war with Mexico. They were all soldiers in that war. After the war with Old Mexico the brothers went back to
Georgia. John was the youngest boy.
1850
Georgia Census found William as a Doctor age 26 & wife A. age 21. Then it listed Eliza Jarratti age 47, Eliza A. Hatchett age 28, Julia A. Hatchett age 16, John
Hatchett age 13 & Mary
Hatchett age 5 all living together.
In 1856 William
Pinckney Hatchett Sr. moved his family to Southern
Texas with which he became acquainted during the war with Old Mexico.
1860
Texas Census -
Lavaca County - Town-Halletsville, Line-122 found W. P. Hatchett living with wife Angelina & their children, Ella, Mary,
Augusta, William, ------ TWINS -----------John
Beasley Hatchett Jr and
Hampton Stevens Hatchett, they were farming.
In 1870 when his son
Hampton (My Grandma Pearl Hatchett's father) was 16 yrs. old William P. moved the family to Bosque County near Valley
Mills,
Texas. They stayed there for several years, farming the Bosque River Valley
Lands.
In 1873 William
Pinckney Hatchett Sr. came up to
Erath County and bought up enough of the Duffau
Prairie Lands for himself and all of his living children so they could have a good farm home.
William
Pinckney Hatchett " Jr." lived near Clyde,
Texas. The next oldest son Edward
Hatchett lived at Stephenville or near there and had large Banking Interests at Stephenville,
Texas.
William "Pinck Jr", Ed, Jesse, Claude & Roy all died at the beginning of World War I.
1900
Texas Census - Soundex Code H-323, Vol 36, E.D. 72, Sheet 3, Line 77
Erath County Precinct #4 found William P. Hatchett M.D. age 76 and his 2nd wife Narcissa age 58 and Grandson Henry A. Wyley Born in
Texas in June of 1876 age 23, they were all living together. Several years after William
Pinckney Hatchett Sr's wife Angelina died he moved back to
Georgia & married his wifes cousin Narcissa Emily
Stevens. They had been married 7 years in the 1900 Census record.
This information was taken word for word from my Grandma Pearl
Hatchett- Farmer-Thomas's own letter. She was writing to Bessie M. Hatchett who was doing the family tree.
I can go back to 1675 on the
Hatchett side.
