Thanks for the information. Please let me know about anything else you come across. I am still looking for information about my father side of the family, the Hinojosa's from La Palma.

My father was named Guadalupe Hinojosa-Yanez. His father was named Encarnacion Hinojosa-Garcia and his mother was named Isidra Yanez-Martinez.

My father was baptized under the name J. Guadalupe Hinojosa and his batismal record indicate (erroneously) that his father was named Concepcion Hinojosa.

Please let me know if you have any information about La Palma, Tamps., Mexico or the Hinojosa/Yanez of that area.

Dolores and Silverio Solis's father was Mateo Valdez Solis his father: Santiago Hinojosa Solis mother :Gertrudis Valdez.
Santiago's father: Juan Jose Solis mother: Maria Gertrudis Hinojosa.

Which would make him your 6th gen, not 5th. I wish I had more information for Juan Jose Solis, I just thought I should let you know about the missing generation.

The history of the San Jose Cemetary in Hidalgo Co, made a point to note that Juan Jose was a Spaniard, but because of the definition it's hard to tell if this means he was Peninsulares or Criollos.

San Jose Ranch was established in 1860s by Silverio Solis (1845-1921 and his wife Maria Ana Cavazos, and his brother Dolores (1844-1918). Brothers were grandsons of Juan Jose Solis, Spaniard, from Rancho Soliseno, Tamaulipas, across Rio Grande just south of Bluetown. Ranch was purchased by American Rio Grande Land & Irrigation Co. about 1912.

My father-in-law, Manuel Rios was married to Elia Perez. He was the son of Gorgonio Rios and Maria Guevara. He had several brothers. They were Jesus who was married to Mavis Anthony and Eduardo who was married to Juana Nunez. He also had several half brothers. Hesiquio (Dick) married to Carmen Zamora, Francisca (Paquita) married to Justo Guerra, Laurel married to Idolina Solis. Gorgonio was the son of Alvino Rios and Natividad Garcia. I know that many years ago we received an invitation to a family reunion in the Victoria/ Beeville area but we did not attend amd we lost touch with those people. I hope this helps you. If you have an information on any of these people please contact me.

I believe you have the wrong Gertrudis and Luis. My cousin, Emi, made the same mistake in her tree. There are two Luis and Gertrudis in south Texas, one in Hidalgo/Starr counties, and one in Cameron/Willacy counties. The one you are looking for is Gertrudis Moya which is what the M stands for. Trust me on this, they are different.

The first census that I'm aware of was 1749, widely available and published by Garmendia Leal. The second one I've seen was 1753 but it was much more limited in info compared to the 1749 version. I know there was an 1841 census because I've reviewed a paper copy and I think there was an 1824 version also but I'm not sure about the last one. Check the inventory of the UTPA historical collection.
Regards,
D. Cano

Hi Teresa:

My wife, Norma Bustinza, was so happy to hear from you. She asked her dad, Cecilio Bustinza, about Rodolfo Bustinza, and he knows exactly who he is. He told her that
Rodolfo Bustinza's father was named Pedro Bustinza, and Pedro was Policarpo's brother. Policarpo was Cecilio Bustinza's grandfather. He recalls Pedro having more children, which are Rodolfo's siblings. This is so interesting, especially since Norma, her brother and sister do not know any of her father's relatives. Here is my email address: trigarway @ verizon.net. Email us directly so we can discuss things more privately. Trini.

Re: Originator of Cadena Surname

Hello,

Regarding the Cadena's of Nuevo Leon, Mexico, and South Texas.

The Pedro de Alvarado link to the Cadena's is presumed to be illegitimate. Genealogical records only list Pedro's children from his European wife. It is said that Pedro was given a Tlascalan princess by Cortez as a reward for helping conquer the Aztecs. As you know Tlascalan's were subservient and bitter enemies of the Aztec. They helped the Spaniards defeat Montezuma. Her Christian name was Maria Luisa. It's said she and Pedro were happy together, and she traveled with him.

Regarding the Cadena crest:

A line of African slaves (a cadena) was protecting the Moor Mohammad ben Josef in the Battle of Navas de Tolosa in Summer of 1212. The Cadena ancestor (a Gonzalez) was the first to break the line of defense protecting the moorish king and was rewarded a new crest. The family became Gonzalez de la Cadena, then Cadena alone.

It's presumed that the family is descended from Fernan Gonzalez, Counts of Barcelona, thereafter Kings of Majorca. This needs confirmation.

Even before this, books state that the Cadenas were of the highest nobility in Burgos, Spain and resided Covarrubias, the outskirts of the city.

In the 1300s (or so), Garcia Martinez de Lerma was ambassador (and a Knight of Santiago?) to Venice (a city state) and Maria Cadena was his wife. The family assumed the surname Cadena, perhaps because was more prestigious, but the reason is unclear. One didn't necessarily have his father's surname in those days.
