I was wondering if you had any information regarding a General Robles of the Division del Norte during the Mexican Revolution of 1900? I have read stories of a General Robles from a war correspondent by the name of Juan Reed. Do you know of any Alcadia Robles

THe only general I know of is Vito Alessio Robles. He was from Saltillo, Coahuila. He was an enginner but I believe he did fight to oust Diaz from office. With the accession
of Madero becoming presidency he became part of Madero's cabinet even though he had supported Carranza. When Madero was murdered by Huerta, Alessio Robles was put in prison
for a year. When he got out he sought out Pancho Villa in
the north and joined up with him for a while. Then Carranza and Villa split and I think Robles changed his allegiance somewhere down the line. His brother Miguel was a lawyer and was secretary to Carranza. Both eventually became ambassadors to foreign countries and Vito served in the legislature representing Coahuila. These brothers were my grandfather's first cousins.

Generales ROBLES

There was a General Jose Isabel Robles fought in the 1910 Revolution, the same whom newspaperman John Reed should have known. Robles also knew General Vito Alessio Robles, in fact there are pictures of both in a picture taken in October of 1914 in Veracruz. Jose Isabel was not related to the Alessios.

I read somewhere that the Alessios' maternal grandfather (Robles) had been an officer in the Mexican Army before the Revolution and also a general.

Jose Isabel was from Zacatecas. I don't remember from where exactly but it may be either Nieves or El Vergel, Zacatecas.

There is another General Juvencio Robles about whom a corrido was written. I have a copy of the corrido. He died in 1920, POB unknown, but was from Juchitan, Oaxaca. this one was retired from the Forces because he was rather cruel. I think he was called "el Incendiario".

Yet another general is Manuel Natividad Robles Rosas, 1877-1939, b. Guanajuato.

Also General Serafin Maximiliano Robles Morales, 1883-1955, b. Jonatepec, 12 October. He died in Mexico City on 28 May and is buried in Cuautla, Morelos.

I think all of them sooner or later ended up with Villa at one time or another. There may be more. Jose Isabel was the only one I know for sure that was a Villista for a longer period of time.

Vito Alessio Robles maternal grandfather was Anselmo Robles Perales, my great great grandfather. He died about 1872 in Saltillo. I had not heard that he held any military rank and would be interested in your sources. As for the Robles generals being related I have trying to follow the Robles line back and prove that most of the Robles begin with the 4 brothers who had come with Cortez in 1519. Many setttled in Guanajuato and some in Zacatecas. I think our original ancestor in the north came in 1598 from Cuencame. Vito Alessio Robles had family diaries that are probably in the municipal archives in Saltillo that might prove this. I have been unable to get there myself.

If any one has related information then please email me.

Esther,

The public library in El Paso has quite a number of writings by the Alessio brothers. It also has the books written by John Reed, the war correspondant. You may borrow them through interlibrary loan.
I will contact you later with more information about the Alessios, the Robles and whatever I find about them. I need to go through my books. Alsos, I borrowed the Cronica Ilustrada Revolucion Mexicana - currently out of print - from a friend (looking for info on General Panfilo Natera) which has extensive information about most of the people in the Revolution. It has lots of pictures with the people identified most of the time. One volume is paintings of the notables done by the Zavala painter from Mexico City. It's five volumes and it will take me a while.

Now that you mention Cuencame, you may be right about the Robles. One of my grandfathers had a number of 'conocidos" by the name of Robles from Cuencame because several men from there had married into his Castruita and Barron families which settled in San Juan de Guadalupe, Durango, not too far from Cuencame. By the way, I have a number of relatives with the Robles surname also. Their families also hail from Zacatecas. Most live in Torreon and surrounding haciendas.

Elvira,

Thanks for the lead. I have some of Vito Alessio Robles' books but not all of them. I have been trying to purchase them but they are very expensive. Reed's stuff I don't have any of them. Alessio Robles' 2nd book in his 2 vol set on Coahuila speaks of the period after Mexico has independence from Spain. Any reference to Anselmo Robles has to be in there. I know that during the Mexican American War that Anselmo moved the family from Los Patos to Saltillo. I always thought it strange that he did during the war.

The Robles around Torreon seem to be related to the Robles around Teptenco(something like that) in Zacatecas. There are posts on this board related to a book on the Robles in Torreon AND Zacatecas. The book on those Robles starts after my Robles had already migrated to Los Patos so they don't seem to be closely related if at all.
