Davis Family

Surnames: DAVIS, GILBERT, YOUNG, HAYNES
Greetings Gene Seekers, I am researching my Davis family and would like to know if someone could help me identify these people and events?
I found this info in the cemetary rec's at Bradley Co, site.
Davis,Charles Willie b.8-1-1933 d. 5-16-1967
Davis,Willie B. 5-1-1887 d. 10-28-1967
Davis, Lucy M. 8-7-1900 d. 5-16-1967
Can anyone tell me what happened to them and is there a newspaper article about the deaths or events?
I believe these people are my ancestors and would like to know more about them.

Also does anyone have information about William Ricks, if my information is correct my grandfather was accused of assult with intent to kill against this man. I don't know all of the details but I understand that this incident would have taken place October 27, 1921 in Bradley Co., or at least that is where the papers were processed and served and he was apprehended after a warrant for his arrest was issued. The people listed below are listed as witnesses:
William Ricks, Vera Bohanan, Fred Young, and Dr.Reinhart. Was Dr. Reinhart a African American doctor?
Does anyone have a copy of the details of this and if so would you please share them and help clear up a family mystery?

I would also like to know about Sinkfield Davis and/or Sinkfield Gilbert both of whom I have located on census rec's. I am descended from both the Davis and Gilbert families. My dad was Will Davis Jr. of Ashley, Hamburg, AR; his dad would have been Will or Willie Davis (wife Lucile Davis) and his dad would have been Nate or Nathan Davis. We are told that my grandfather was born in "Kansas" whether Kansas or Kansas City, Missouri is unknown at this time.

Can anyone assist with a court case filed in March 1919 by Will Davis against Delmon Cogbill? Will Davis won his case in the amount of 143.50 and all of his cost's, he was represented by Nixon, Levine, and Nixon. The case was argued in the Jefferson Cicuit Court.

Any help in this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, J.Davis

Hello J. Davis, my name is Dena and I have a little information about Sinkfield Davis, but nothing on the newspaper articles that your are requesting information on. Sinkfield Davis was the son of Wesley Davis and Ollie Green, Ollie was the daughter of my GG Grand Uncle, Mike Green. Mike's sister was my GG Grandmother, Easter Green. I have Sinkfield being married to a Lula Mae Burns. As for Lucy Davis (b. 8-7-1900, d. 5-16-67, what was her maiden name? I also have Gilbert's in my family, but in order to help you, I would have to know where you start and end in this line. My main research is the Green and Calbert Family, but of course, Davis, Childs fit in also. Get back to me and let's see what we can put together.
Dena

Hi Dena, thanks for replying. I am the daughter of Will Davis Jr. and Elena Gibbs born AR. My dad's parents were Will or Willie Davis and Luclie Haynes- Davis, I don't know who Will Senior's parents were, I am told his dad's name was Nate or Nathan Davis. Lucile's parents were William Pierce Haynes (Ashley, Hamburg, AR) and Emily G.Young- Haynes (she had a son named Hunter Gilbert) I don't know who his dad was. That is where the Gilbert's come from in my family.
I found a Sinkfield Gilbert in the 1880 Census in the hh of Anthony and Jeney Rolfe- Gilbert (married on 12-29-1878). Anthony was last found in Ashley, Carter township (Hamburg), AR with two sons in 1900 Census. I have a Gilbert cousin living. As for Sinkfield Davis I found him on a 1900 Census in Wilmar Township, Drew Co., AR listed below.
Sinkfield Davis age 26 born Dec. 1873
Mollie Davis age 22 born Feb. 1878 wife
Vance Davis age 03 born Mar. 1887 son
Irene (Inez) Davis age 11/12 born June 1889

(see Mat Davis hh 1880 census) Sinquofield Davis, son age 7
Dena I don't know much about my Davis family because my dad was told his dad died in 1938 3 months after he was born and no one will talk about the senior Will Davis or his family. I would like to know more about Wesley Davis perhaps he will provide clues to who my grandfather was. As for Lucy Davis all I know is what I posted and that I found in cemetary records in Bradley county. I almost believe her maiden name was Conely or Connelly, I found Lucy age 30 and Will Davis age 29 on 1920 Drew Co. census living next door to Frank and Caroline Conley. I have a marriage certificate for these two people. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Peace, J
Also my dad's two sisters dad was a Green, they believe his name was Cleve Green. Since they didn't know him I don't have any other info on him that is all that I know. Except that he died in Hamburg, AR and he wasn't married to my Granny Lucile.
As for Calbert (Colbert) I found a lot of them on the 1900-1920 Census records for Ashley, Hamburg, AR (Carter Township) they are related by marriage I think.

Hi J.Davis and Dena:
Dena I think I might have tried to email you before but not sure.
J, I noticed that you brought up an 1880 Census that listed Sinquofield son of Mat Davis and Caroline Davis. Madison and Caroline Davis are my great great great grandparents. I am the decendent of Sallie Ann Davis, the older sister of Sinquofield. From what I've read of your posts, I'm not sure if we are related or not.
To answer your question regarding Sinquofield (estimated birth year: 1873), I have also seen his name as Saintfield and Sinkfield Davis and have yet to find anything on him despite my searches.
This is what I know of the family:
Caroline Davis was from Mississippi and her maiden name was Chavas. Madison Davis was originally from South Carolina and that is the extent I know of him. There are rumors that Caroline Davis might have been Cherokee but have yet to be proven.
The earliest I can place the family is in 1870 in Spring Hill, Drew County, Arkansas - Post Office: Monticello-.
The last census I have for the family is 1900 in Clear Creek, Drew County, Arkansas.
I took a look at Sinkfield 1900 census of of Drew County, Arkansas, and I think it was the same one listed in 1880 as the son of Madison and Caroline Davis.
I know that you posted your message in 2006 so I hope you get this message, if you have since found any information on your Davis side, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks,
T

Hi TJTGIRL,thank you for responding! I'm not quite sure if I am related to this Davis family...but I have a gut instinct that I am. I have hordes of FDavis info just not sure what to do with it as I'm not absolute about whom my Will (William?)Davis was. Your Sinquofield and the Sinkfield Davis that I have on 1880, 1900, 1920 and 1930's records are the same. I found Sinkfield married to Inez with two children in Drew County, AR if I am remembering the county correctly. Will and Martha were living with an assortment of people in some kind of camp.

I'm not exact on my info because I am in the process of moving and all of my research is packed up. But please keep in contact with me, I've waited a long time to connect with someone on this lineage.

Hi KineticEnergy,
Funny you mention his wife, I just found a census from 14 Jan 1920 in North Little Rock Ward 3,Hill Township,Pulaski, Arkansas. This might be the telltale sign if we are related or not.
This 1920 census lists Sinquofield as S.S. Davis aged 46 and he is listed as being Divorced.
He is head of household and apparently has roomers...however,
his mother, Caroline is living with him and she is 74 years old.
His Neice by his sister Mary, Althia Wood is living with him as well as his sister Mary Wood who also is listed as divorced. In this census she is listed as a roomer and not his sister, but I know with out any doubt that this is in fact his sister.
I'm anxious to know what you think of this census and to see if we are in fact related as I would LOVE to learn more about the Davis family.
Do you happen to have an idea of what your William Davis looked like?
I've been searching for a picture of my Sallie Davis and think I might have found one...will have to dig farther to know for sure but from what I know she was pretty light skinned, possibly mulatto.

Okay, here's what I've found w/o unpacking;

1900 Wilmar, Drew AR
DAVIS, SINKFIELD 26 Dec. 1873 AR
DAVIS, Mollie 22
DAVIS, Vance 3
DAVIS, Irene 11/12

1900 Bolivar, Jefferson AR
DAVIS, SINKFIELD 15 Dec. 1885 AR Grandson of Elmira Glover aged 52, several other people in household

WW1 Draft Registration Crd 1917-1918
DAVIS, SINKFIELD born Dec. 8, 1882

1910 Saline, Drew AR
DAVIS, Madison 76
DAVIS, Caroline 64
DAVIS, Mary 22

1920 North Little Rock Ward 3, Pulaski AR
I saw this census and was going to send it to you but wasn't sure if this was the same Caroline.

I'm not sure who my Will Davis was as my dad never knew him, he "died" when my dad was about 3 months old. My family is not very conversant about my Davis family. From what I've learned so far my Davis family were Mullato's and Native American. The only one I have any real info on is my grandfather, Will Davis, he's the one I found on the census with his sister Martha living w/a group of people.

Check out 1880 Carter, Ashley Co; AR Gilbert, Anthony's household with 8 year old son SINKFIELD. I know this is the same man as the Davis, Sinquofield.

I'm not sure of any Wood's in my family but have heard of Wofford's.

My dad was a very dark skinned man with blue eyes... from what I've been told his dad was a light brown skinned man with "different" eyes. He was educated, fearless, strong minded, very family oriented and respected, even with all of the troubles he encountered.
