A brief history of the Greenshade Cemetery, Fowlstown Community, Decatur County, GA, is found on pages 28-29 in Mayo Livingston, Jr.'s book, Cemeteries of Decatur County, published in 1996. Evidence of a cemetery at this location dates back to 1829 when John White made a deed to the lot of land and exempted one acre for an existing cemetery. The Greenshade Tabernacle (Baptist denomination) was located here from 1858 to 1896.

The above captioned surname list is not a complete listing of all the families buried at Greenshade. View the Decatur County cemetery listing for this cemetery which shows the 1954-56 survey compiled by Eustus Howard Hayes. No up-to-date listing has been completed at this time.

The Annual Greenshade Cemetery Cleaning Day is held the first Saturday in May. However, now days the cemetery is kept in a neat appearance throughout the year and the morning is mostly a time of fellowship with each other. At noon time, an old fashioned southern tradition is shared -- "Dinner on the Grounds".

For further information concerning the Cemetery and the fund for cemetery maintenance, contact J. B. Swicord, Bainbridge, GA, or fax (912) 248-1450.
